Understanding Scientific Inquiry in Education

Abstract:Scientific has become the focus of science education internationally.In order to engage students with authentic inquiry,teachers are required to gain a deep understanding of the nature of authentic inquiry,to be aware of its educational values and to know various strategies of its implementation.Authentic is the processes of generating,arguing and accumulating knowledge via investigating open-ended problems,which is mediated by knowledge of science,knowledge about science,intuition,imagination,creativity as well as other personal characteristics of the students.There is no such a thing as the general and correct way of inquiry.The goal of scientific in education is not to generate knowledge that is new to humankind,but rather to understand how knowledge is constructed,to learn process skills and thinking,and to appreciate the nature and value of science per se.Strategies for successfully implementing scientific in education involve creating inquiry situations with various degrees of scaffolding,allowing free exploration before questioning,encouraging students reflecting from failures,as well as facilitating thinking via dialogic discourse strategy.
