Abstract:In this paper, we have implemented a secure communication platform based on a new stream cipher called Gemstone which stems from coupled map lattices (CML), a nonlinear system of coupled chaotic maps. On the platform, we have realized duplex text, image and voice transmission. We have also analyzed the randomness of the keystream generated by the platform based on the statistical tests suggested by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The test results are compared with other four stream ciphers'. Moreover, a series of experiments of duplex text, image and voice transmissions were made through university local network. Both the statistical test and the transmission experiments have shown that the platform is highly secure with fast encryption speed, which confirms that the Gemstone platform is promising for cryptographic applications.

Abstract:The validity of the provable security of counter with cipher block chaining message authentication code (CCM) mode and cipher-based message authentication code (CMAC) mode was studied and proved. The illustrations of different communications' encryption have been developed. The security of the novel authentication operation mode is demonstrated with flowing chart. The standardized operation modes of block cipher are proved to be safe in various environments. The proposed procedure is also applicable to Galois/counter mode (GCM) operation mode published in July, 2007. The provable security is a necessary process for a new mode of block cipher.

Abstract:This paper re-examines the security of three related block cipher modes of operation designed to provide authenticated encryption. These modes, known as PES-PCBC, IOBC and EPBC, were all proposed in the mid-1990s. However, analyses of security of the latter two modes were published more recently. In each case one or more papers describing security issues with the schemes were eventually published, although a flaw in one of these analyses (of EPBC) was subsequently discovered - this means that until now EPBC had no known major issues. This paper establishes that, despite this, all three schemes possess defects which should prevent their use - especially as there are a number of efficient alternative schemes possessing proofs of security.

Abstract:White-box block cipher (WBC) aims at protecting the secret key of a block cipher even if an adversary has full control over the implementations. At CHES 2016, Bos et al. proved that WBC are also threatened by side-channel analysis (SCA), e.g., differential fault analysis (DFA) and differential computation analysis (DCA). Therefore, advanced countermeasures have been proposed by Lee et al. for resisting DFA and DCA, such as table redundancy and improved masking methods, respectively. In this paper, we introduce a new adaptive side-channel analysis model which assumes that an adversary adaptively collects the intermediate values of a specific function and can mount the DFA/DCA attack with chosen inputs. In the adaptive SCA model, both theoretical analysis and experimental results show that Lee et al.’s proposed methods are vulnerable to DFA and DCA attacks. Moreover, a negative proposition is also demonstrated on the corresponding high-order countermeasures under our new model.

Abstract:The security of EPCBC,a lightweight block cipher proposed in CANS 2011,against the side-channel cube attack is evaluated by combining cube cryptanalysis with side-channel attack under the 8-bit Hamming weight leakage model.Under the black-box attack scenario,the adversary firstly generates random cube and superpoly.Then the cube is used to generate chosen plaintexts.The adversary deduces one bit of the intermediate state from the side-channel attack for each chosen plaintext and computes the high order differences of these one bit values to verify the relations between the cube and superpoly.Simulation experiments are launched on two variants of EPCBC with different block lengths.The results demonstrate that the unprotected implementation of EPCBC is vulnerable to side-channel cube attacks.If the adversary can accurately deduce the Hamming weight of the intermediate states from the side-channel leakages,many cubes and superpolys can be extracted and used for key recovery.372 chosen plaintexts can recover 48-bit of the master key for EPCBC(48,96) and reduce the key search space to 248.610 chosen plaintexts can recover full 96-bit of the master key for EPCBC(96,96) directly.The techniques of this paper can provide certain references to black-box side-channel cube attacks on other block ciphers.

This paper gives a complete definition of timing attacks and studies the vulnerability of operations and modules on timing attack. We present a method to transfer the security of the algorithm to that of secure operations by reduction. As a result, we modern croptography with real-world implementations of block ciphers.

Abstract:A new secret-key block cipher is proposed as a candidate for a new encryption standard. In the proposed cipher, the plaintext and the ciphertext are 64 bit blocks, while the secret key is 128 bit long. The cipher is based on the design concept of "mixing operations from different algebraic groups". The cipher structure was chosen to provide confusion and diffusion and to facilitate both hardware and software implementations.

Abstract:In this paper we propose an encoding-encryption approach to take advantage of intentional noise introduced in ciphertexts for a block cipher working in CFB or CBC mode. First of all, we provide a rigorous analysis of the impacts of channel degradation on block ciphered systems. We show that the overall channel can be modeled as a Finite State Markov Chain (FSMC) with symmetric channels associated in each state, whose underlying non-coherent Shannon capacity is derived and computed. Despite Eve's efforts in modifying her linear crytanalysis given the intercepted noisy ciphertexts, there is still a non-negligible probability of having possible failures in her attack. We essentially create a wiretap channel in application layer that is a degraded version of the main channel and measure security of the system in terms of secrecy capacity and show that it depends on the deliberately introduced bit error rate. In addition, Alice can accordingly adjust cross over probability of the channel to maximize secrecy rate. This secrecy rate can be achieved by wiretap channel coding over multiple frames in application layer if the delay in system is bearable.

Abstract:Traditional secure communication systems separate the channel coding and cryptography so security is not affected by channel errors. This paper presents a design method based on physical-layer encryption to further improve system security by introducing channel errors into the cryptography. This paper also presents a method to quantitatively evaluate this system secrecy by calculating the impact of channel errors and correlations in codewords as a new technical evaluation method for similar systems. Theoretical and simulation results show that when the bit error rate for the binary systemetric channel （BSC） is larger than a threshold, the system in this paper is more secure than traditional systems.

Abstract:Information security is a necessary safeguard for mobile e-commerce and a secure communication system to obtain high quality secure communication in wireless environment is introduced, which is integrating three kinds of encryption algorithms including AES, RSA and CPRS chaos encryption. Secure communication framework based on three-layer encryption model is proposed: (1) AES layer of system code decrypt, system boot and the system self-destruct; (2) RSA layer of authentication, key negotiation and key management functions; (3) CPRS layer of communication data stream encryption and decryption. The implementation and optimization of the above-mentioned three kinds of algorithms are discussed. The experiments show the three kinds of encryption algorithms are safe and reliable to achieve a high degree of secure communication.

Authenticated encryption modes based on block ciphers provide both privacy and authenticity of users’ information. As they have many good properties: high-speed, easy standardization, high-efficiency in hardware and software implementation, they have been widely used in the field of information security. In this paper, we give a survey on authenticated encryption modes based on block ciphers, and discuss further research trend in the future.

Abstract:A key delay design on block cipher is proposed and is demonstrated based on provable security with information theory. Furthermore, we evaluate the result of key delay module. For the published block cipher, the key delay technology can enforce the cryptography system and decrease the information leak from key distribution through internet. Abstract:In this paper, we perform neural cryptanalysis on five block ciphers: Data Encryption Standard (DES), Simplified DES (SDES), Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), Simplified AES (SAES), and SPECK. The block ciphers are investigated on three different deep learning-based attacks, Encryption Emulation (EE), Plaintext Recovery (PR), Key Recovery (KR), and Ciphertext Classification (CC) attacks. The attacks attempt to break the block ciphers in various cases, such as different types of plaintexts (i.e., block-sized bit arrays and texts), different numbers of round functions and quantity of training data, different text encryption methods (i.e., Word-based Text Encryption (WTE) and Sentence-based Text Encryption (STE)), and different deep learning model architectures. As a result, the block ciphers can be vulnerable to EE and PR attacks using a large amount of training data, and STE can improve the strength of the block ciphers, unlike WTE, which shows almost the same classification accuracy as the plaintexts, especially in a CC attack. Moreover, especially in the KR attack, the Recurrent Neural Network (RNN)-based deep learning model shows higher average Bit Accuracy Probability than the fully connected-based deep learning model. Furthermore, the RNN-based deep learning model is more suitable than the transformer-based deep learning model in the CC attack. Besides, when the keys are the same as the plaintexts, the KR attack can perfectly break the block ciphers, even if the plaintexts are randomly generated. Additionally, we identify that DES and SPECK32/64 applying two round functions are more vulnerable than those applying the single round function by performing the KR attack with randomly generated keys and randomly generated single plaintext.

Abstract:Security notions for block ciphers have been defined in a concrete security framework. Yet, a cryptosystem against side channel attacks has no appropriate secure goals and adversary models for some reason currently. This paper presents some security notions for block ciphers against side channel attack. Based on these definitions, we establish the relationship between them by reduction on the success of adversaries as a function of their resources. It provides a general theoretical method for block ciphers against side channel attacks.

Abstract:The most important tool to protect data integrity is Message Authentication Code(MAC),which is widely used in many kinds of secure systems.With the development of the theory of provable security,the MACs,which have security proof,are the first choice of many people.Based on the constructions of XOR MAC and PMAC,we define a deterministic fully parallelizable block-cipher mode of operation for message authentication-DXOR MAC(Deterministic XOR MAC).We prove its security,quantifying an adversary's forgery probability in terms of the quality of the block cipher as a pseudo-random permutation.

Abstract:With the maturation of quantum computing technology, many cryptographic methods are gradually facing threats from quantum computing. Although the Grover algorithm can accelerate search speeds, current research indicates that the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) method can still enhance security by increasing the length of the secret key. However, the AES method involves multiple modes in implementation, and not all modes are secure. Therefore, this study proposes a normalized Gini impurity (NGI) to verify the security of each mode, using encrypted images as a case study for empirical analysis. Furthermore, this study primarily compares the Electronic Codebook (ECB) mode, Cipher Block Chaining (CBC) mode, Counter (CTR) mode, Counter with CBC-Message Authentication Code (MAC) (CCM) mode, and Galois Counter Mode (GCM).

Abstract:In order to improve the security and efficiency of image encryption systems comprehensively, a novel chaotic S-box based image encryption scheme is proposed. Firstly, a new compound chaotic system, Sine-Tent map, is proposed to widen the chaotic range and improve the chaotic performance of 1D discrete chaotic maps. As a result, the new compound chaotic system is more suitable for cryptosystem. Secondly, an efficient and simple method for generating S-boxes is proposed, which can greatly improve the efficiency of S-box production. Thirdly, a novel double S-box based image encryption algorithm is proposed. By introducing equivalent key sequences {r, t} related with image ciphertext, the proposed cryptosystem can resist the four classical types of attacks, which is an advantage over other S-box based encryption schemes. Furthermore, it enhanced the resistance of the system to differential analysis attack by two rounds of forward and backward confusion-diffusion operation with double S-boxes. The simulation results and security analysis verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. The new scheme has obvious efficiency advantages, which means that it has better application potential in real-time image encryption.
