Abstract:Uniform platinum nanoparticles with average diameter of about 3.0nm and good dispersion on carbon nanotubes were prepared by microwave heated polyol process and characterized by EDX, XRD, TEM and XPS. TEM observations showed that microwave synthesized Pt nanoparticles had a sharp size distribution and highly dispersed on the surface of carbon nanotubes. Cyclic voltammetry demonstrated that the microwave synthesized Pt/carbon nanotubes catalysts exhibited higher catalytic activity for methanol electrooxidation at room temperature than a commercial Pt/C catalyst. The significant improvement in electrocatalytic activity was due to that the microwave synthesized Pt nanoparticles was uniform in size and well dispersed on the surface of carbon nanotubes.

Abstract:As a rapid uniform and efficient heating method, microwave irradiation has been widely used in chemical reaction and preparing nanomaterials. Here Pt/carbon nanotube(CNT) catalysts with w(Pt) = 18.1% and 9.4% were rapidly synthesized by microwave irradiation heating polyol process and employing the ethylene glycol solution of H2PtCl6 as the precursors in the presence of CNT support. TEM imaging showed that microwave-prepared Pt nanoparticles were very uniform in size, with an average size of 3,1 nm, and uniformly dispersed on the CNT surface. Electrochemical experiments demonstrated that microwave-synthesized Pt/CNT. catalysts exhibited a higher catalytic activity, for electrooxidation of liquid methanol than E-TEK Pt/C. The significant improvement in catalyst. performance derives from that microwave-synthesized Pt nanoparticles have a uniform small particle size and uniforml dispersion on the CNT surface.

Abstract:XC-72 carbon and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) supported PtRu alloy nanoparticles with Pt:Ru of 1:1 were rapidly prepared by microwave assisted heating polyol process. The PtRu loading was 20%. TEM observations showed that the microwave-synthesized PtRu nanoparticles had very small diameters and a sharp particle size distribution. These nanoparticles were highly dispersed on the surface of XC-72 carbon and CNTs with average diameter of 3.30 nm and 2.81 nm, respectively. Electrochemical measurements showed that the microwave-prepared PtRu/XC-72 and PtRu/CNTs nanocatalysts exhibited higher electrocatalytic activity for methanol oxidation at room temperature than PtRu/XC-72 catalyst prepared using KBH4 as the reducing agent by wet chemical method.
Carbon-Supported Pt and Ptru Nanoparticles As Catalysts for A Direct Methanol Fuel Cell

Abstract:Nanosized Pt and PtRu colloids were prepared by a microwave-assisted polyol process and transferred to a toluene solution of decanthiol. Vulcan XC-72 was then added to the toluene solution to adsorb the thiolated Pt and PtRu colloids. TEM examinations showed nearly spherical particles and narrow size distributions for both supported and unsupported metals. The carbon-supported Pt and PtRu nanoparticles were activated by thermal treatment to remove the thiol stabilizing shell. All Pt and PtRu catalysts (except Pt23Ru77) showed the X-ray diffraction pattern of a face-centered cubic (fcc) crystal structure, whereas the Pt23Ru77 alloy was more typical of the hexagonal close-packed (hcp) structure. The electro-oxidation of liquid methanol on these catalysts was investigated at room temperature by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. Abstract:Pt nanoparticles were incorporated on carbon black (Vulcan XC-72R) and an activated carbon (F400) using a fast and efficient microwave method. For the preparation, a Pt solution was contacted with the corresponding carbon sample and heated up to 110°C in a microwave oven using an optimised heating rate. TEM images revealed that the carbon-supported Pt nanoparticles had a small average particle size and high dispersion. These Pt-based electrocatalysts showed both high electrocatalytic activity and selectivity towards the 4-electron pathway for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in acid and alkaline media. In addition, they presented excellent stability and resistance to CO poisoning. Moreover, the as-prepared electrocatalysts exhibited outstanding electrocatalytic behaviour for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). It should be highlighted that, even though our Pt-based electrocatalysts have much lower loadings than that of the commercial Pt/C sample (used as reference), the electroactive surface areas of as-prepared electrocatalysts were higher compared to the reference electrocatalyst. Such small and well-dispersed Pt NPs with an enhanced electroactive surface area and strong interaction with the carbon support, led to an improvement of the current density normalised by Pt loading (A g Pt −1 ).

Abstract:A one-pot microwave-assisted synthesis method was developed to produce carbon nanofiber (CNF) supported platinum (Pt) catalyst nanoparticles as potential electrode materials for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). CNF-supported Pt (Pt/CNF) hybrid structures were prepared through electrospinning of poly(acrylonitrile-co-N-vinylpyrrolidone) (P(AN-co-nVP)) copolymer containing PtCl2 as a precursor and subsequent microwave-assisted chemical reduction in hydrazine hydrate solution and carbonization. First, the effect of carbonization temperatures (600 to 1000 °C) on the growth of Pt nanoparticles and their electrochemical activity was studied. Uniform particle distribution with an average particle size of 4.25 nm and the highest electrochemical surface area (ECSA) (47.4 m2 g–1) were observed for the sample carbonized at 800 °C. Then microwave-assisted chemical reduction of PtCl2 in the nanofibers prior to carbonization was investigated, which resulted in better control of particle size and distribution and higher electrochemical activity. After carbonization at 800 °C of those treated with microwave-assisted chemical reduction with irradiation time of 15 and 30 s, CNF-supported Pt nanoparticles with a particle size of 1.75 and 2.85 nm and catalytic activity of 71.2 m2 g–1 and 74.6 m2 g–1, respectively, were obtained. Finally, the addition of highly conductive SWCNTs into Pt/CNF hybrids was investigated in terms of its effect on Pt particle size and distribution and electrochemical activity of hybrid materials. SWCNT-containing Pt/CNF, obtained by chemical reduction with 15 s microwave irradiation followed by carbonization at 800 °C, had nanoparticles with an average particle size of 0.86 nm and showed high electrochemical active surface area of 90.0 m2 g–1.

Abstract:Carbon supported PtNi nanoparticles were prepared by hydrazine reduction of Pt and Ni precursor salts under different conditions, namely by conventional heating (PtNi-1), by prolonged reaction at room temperature (PtNi-2) and by microwave assisted reduction (PtNi-3). The nanocomposites were characterized by XRD, EDX, XPS and TEM and used as electrocatalysts in direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) reactions. Investigations into the mechanism of PtNi nanoparticle formation revealed that platinum nanoparticle seeding was essential for the formation of the bimetallic nanoparticles. The average particle size of PtNi prepared by microwave irradiation was the lowest, in the range of 2.9–5.8 nm. The relative rates of electrooxidation of methanol at room temperature as measured by cyclic voltammetry showed an inverse relationship between catalytic activity and particle size in the following order PtNi-1 < PtNi-2 < PtNi-3.

Abstract:Acetate-stabilized Pt nanoparticles supported on carbon were prepared by a microwave heating polyol method, in which a small amount of sodium acetate solution was added as a stabilizing agent in the synthesis solution. The Pt/C catalysts were characterized by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). It was found that the Pt nanoparticles were small and uniform in size, and highly dispersed on XC-72 carbon supports. The mean size of the Pt particles was 5.1, 4.3, 3.5 and 2.8nm, respectively, correspondingly for adding 0, 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5mL of 1.0M sodium acetate solution in 50mL of the synthesis solution. The effects of the amount of acetate solution added on the Pt particle size and size distribution were investigated. The electrochemical measurements demonstrated that the Pt/C catalysts prepared in this way exhibited a much higher electrocatalytic activity for methanol electro-oxidation than a comparative Pt/C catalyst prepared without adding acetate.

Abstract:Reducing the amount of precious metal Pt in proton exchange membrane fuel cells while improving its electrocatalytic activity is one of the core problems in this field. The formation of stable ultrafine Pt nanoparticles is one of the effective methods for improving the utilization rate of Pt and indirectly reducing the amount of Pt. The traditional carbon support has carbon corrosion phenomenon, and the exploration of suitable catalyst support can also improve the utilization rate of the Pt unit and indirectly reduce its consumption. In this paper, ultrafine Pt nanoparticles (2 nm) have been loaded on white carbon black (WCB) in situ by a simple hydrothermal reaction. When the Pt mass load is 40%, the Pt particles are highly dispersed on the WCB, but when the load is increased to 60%, the Pt particles will agglomerate significantly. Due to its high dispersion and ultrafine particle size, 40%Pt/SiO 2 catalyst shows enhanced methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) performance in acidic electrolyte. The maximum oxidation peak current density (163.3mA mg −1 Pt ) of the MOR is superior to that of the commercial carbon-supported Pt catalyst. This study not only describes the design of a highly dispersed, ultrafine particle size of Pt-based catalyst, but also provides a new choice for a new catalyst carrier.

Abstract:PtRu nanoparticles supported on Vulcan XC-72 carbon and carbon nanotubes were prepared by a microwave-assisted polyol process. The catalysts were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The PtRu nanoparticles, which were uniformly dispersed on carbon, were 2-6 nm in diameter. All PtRu/C catalysts prepared as such displayed the characteristic diffraction peaks of a Pt face-centered cubic structure, excepting that the 2theta values were shifted to slightly higher values. XPS analysis revealed that the catalysts contained mostly Pt(0) and Ru(0), with traces of Pt(II), Pt(IV), and Ru(IV). The electro-oxidation of methanol was studied by cyclic voltammetry, linear sweep voltammetry, and chronoamperometry. It was found that both PtRu/C catalysts had high and more durable electrocatalytic activities for methanol oxidation than a comparative Pt/C catalyst. Preliminary data from a direct methanol fuel cell single stack test cell using the Vulcan-carbon-supported PtRu alloy as the anode catalyst showed high power density.
Preparation of Pt-Catalyst by Poly(p-phenylenediamine) Nanocomposites Assisted by Microwave Radiation for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell

Abstract:The Pt elements are prepared via the redox reaction with microwave (MW) irradiation in the presence of poly(p-phenylenediamine) (PpPD) which is polymerized on XC72 carbon matrix (PpPD/XC72), behaving as reducing agent. The free primary amines of PpPD are actually converted (oxidized) to secondary ones (5,10-dihydrophenazine) after MW irradiation. Transmission electronic microscopy (TEM) micrographs reveal the prepared Pt nanoparticles are well-dispersed on the carbon matrix like commercial Pt-implanted carbon nanocomposite (Pt/C). From the residue weights of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) thermograms of Pt-loaded PpPD/XC72 (PpPD/XC72-Pt-MW), more Pt (18.49 wt %) nanoparticles are implanted on PpPD/XC72 composite. The Pt-implanted wt % on PpPD/XC72 matrix is just slightly lower than that of commercial Pt/C (22.30 wt %). The Pt-catalyst supports of PpPD/XC72-Pt-MW illustrate typical cyclic voltammograms (C-V) of Pt-catalyst, including significant Pt–H oxidation and Pt–O reduction peaks. The electrochemical active surface area of PpPD/XC72-Pt-MW is found to be as high as 60.1 m2 g-1. Max. number of electron transfer during oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) approaches 3.83 for PpPD/XC72-Pt-MW, higher than that of commercial Pt/C (3.62). Single cell based on PpPD/XC72-Pt-MW demonstrates much higher specific max. power density to be 34.6 mW cm-2 Pt, higher than that single cell prepared with commercial Pt/C electrode (30.6 mW cm-2 Pt).

Abstract:Special structure formation and rational component modulation are common strategies to obtain superior catalytic properties for fuel cell applications. Here, we propose a facile method to synthesize high-quality PdPt porous nanowires (PNWs) with a greatly expanded active area through galvanic replacement and NaClO etching, on the basic of well-distributed Te nanowires. Such PdPt alloy nanowires with a distinct porous structure definitely possess an influential morphology accompanied with various compositions. A subsequent electrocatalytic test has demonstrated the higher electrochemical surface area (ECSA) of PNW as compared to Pt/C, and superior properties toward direct methanol fuels cells (DMFCs). Moreover, Pd(21)Pt(79)( )shows the best methanol oxidation efficiency, 1.45 times that of Pt/C. In addition, the stability was good, and mass activity was maintained at 74.1% of the initial value after 2000 cycles. The enhancement of properties attributed to the balance of the synergetic effect between proper heterogeneous composition, absorbed OHads energy, and Pt active sites contributed to the enhancement of properties. The facile method with high productivity can shine light on a new way for catalysis design for future fuel cell applications.

Abstract:The use of simple, fast, and inexpensive methods to synthesize nanocomposites is essential for large-scale production and applications. Microwave heating has been recognized as a promising method to attain higher reaction rates; this approach allows to complete new reactions in a short period of time. Therefore, carbon-supported platinum-copper nanoparticles (Pt-Cu NPs/C) were synthesized by microwave-assisted heating within few minutes. Detailed electrochemical studies showed that Pt-Cu NPs/C exhibited higher performance for ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) and methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) than Pt/C. After 1000 sweeping cycles, the highest retention mass activity of EOR and MOR of Pt3Cu NPs/C showed that catalysts had good stability. In this study, a new approach for boosting the efficiency of industrial production of nanomaterial catalysts by rapid microwave heating was developed.

Abstract:Pt/C catalysts with different mean size of Pt particles were prepared by a microwave-assisted polyol process and characterized by TEM and XRD. The effects of the synthesis solution pH on Pt particles size and distribution, and their activity for methanol electrooxidation were investigated. Pt nanoparticles were small and uniform with mean size of 2.7 nm under the pH of 9.5. Pt/C catalyst showed high activity for methanol electrooxidation.

Abstract:Carbon nanotube-supported platinum nanoparticles (Pt-CNTs) were synthesized using glycol as a reducer and H2PtCl6 as an oxidant under microwave radiation. The CNTs was first hydroxylated in refluxing concentrated HNO3. Transmission electron microscopy was used to investigate the influence of the hydroxylation time on the amount of supported platinum on the carbon nanotubes and the effect of the amount of platinum on the morphology of Pt-CNTs. Selected area electron diffraction, X-ray diffraction, and UV-visible spectroscopy were employed to characterize the structure of the Pt-CNTs and the results showed that Pt was of polycrystal nanoparticles. Cyclic voltarnmetric study indicated that the CNTs surface was covered by a compact layer of Pt when the loadings of platinum to CNTs was as high as 0.1875 mmol . g(-1). The result, on one hand, showed that cyclic voltammetry could be used to study the surface structure and properties of CNTs supported platinum nanoparticles, and on the other hand, indicated that it was possible to obtain novel electrode materials with good catalytic activity and stability by optimizing the synthesizing method for CNTs supported platinum nanoparticles.
