'Openness' and 'Open Education' in the Global Digital Economy: An Emerging Paradigm of Social Production

Abstract:This paper provides an overall synoptic view of the changing liberal political economy of an aspect of the global digital economy focusing on theorizing Open Education as movement and digital 'knowledge culture' that builds upon developments of the overlapping convergences of open source, open access, open publishing, and open science movements. The paper relates this synoptic view back to the complex history of 'open education,' to the concept of 'openness,' and its underlying political values, as well as forward in terms of analysis of the present utopian moment of the emerging paradigm of 'social production.'
