Contemporary significance of urban-rural relations theory of Marx and Engels

Abstract:According to the urban-rural relations theory advocated by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels,human societies tend to undergo a transitional development period during which the opposing urban-rural relations would eventually be replaced by an integrating tendency.To facilitate a smooth transition,the foundational position of agriculture and the central leading position of the cities should be equally stressed.In addition,eliminating private ownership,enhancing productivity and improving production mode would certainly contribute to a successful urban-rural integration.Presently as China is evolving from an urban-rural dual system to an urban-rural integration stage,coordinating the urban and rural development would be an essential task for building a whole-scale well-off society.The urban and rural relations theory proposed by Marx and Engels may act as a guideline that we can draw upon in our practice to coordinate the urban and rural development as it is inspiring and clearly set.
