Abstract:In this paper, a mathematical model has been developed by simplifying assumptions typical for natural convective heat transfer from a downward-facing horizontal round plate in confined space. By discretizing the differential equations and setting up the relationship between temporal and spatial nodes, the solution of the resulting differential equation is presented in the form of a correlation between the dimensionless Nusselt and Rayleigh numbers. The numerical result is compared with the experimental measurements of heat transfer from a heated round horizontal plate of 0.3m and 0.1m in diameter performed in water. The numerical and experimental results are in excellent agreement.

Abstract:In this paper, a two-temperature nonlinear coupled constitutive Relations (NCCR) model is utilized to simulate the flows over a flat plate. The two-temperature NCCR model is implemented by involving the rotational relaxation term for the rotational energy equation. Thus, the rotational temperature and translation temperature in the flow field could be obtained simultaneously. The flow contours and temperature profiles over the flat plate are compared with those of multiple-temperature Navier-Stokes (NS) solver. The final results show that the two-temperature NCCR model would reproduce the solutions of NS solver at Ma=2. However, it behaves quite differently from the NS solver at Ma=5. It is also noted that the rotational temperature and translational temperature are close to each other at Ma=2. In contrast, the rotational temperature and translational temperature are totally different at Ma=5.

Numerical Heat Transfer Part A Applications

Abstract:Numerical studies were conducted to investigate the simultaneous natural-convection heat transfer above and below an isothermal thin plate in an infinite space. The full two-dimensional conservation equations for laminar flows were solved. The numerical approach was based on the finite-volume technique with a nonstaggered grid arrangement. The SIMPLE algorithm was used for handling the pressure-velocity coupling. Plate width and temperature were used to vary the Rayleigh number over the range 1.0 2 10 5 to 1.7 2 10 7 . The expressions for numerical local and average Nusselt number were correlated, and horizontal velocity and temperature profiles were provided. It was found that the upper-surface Nusselt numbers are smaller than the corresponding lower-surface Nusselt numbers. Numerical results for upward- and downward-facing isothermal horizontal plates (single-sided heat transfer) were also shown for comparison. For these cases, Nusselt numbers on the upward-facing surface are larger than those on the downward-facing surface.

Abstract:Numerical studies were conducted to investigate the natural convection heat transfer around a uniformly heated thin plate with arbitrary inclination in an infinite space. The numerical approach was based on the finite volume technique with a nonstaggered grid arrangement. For handling the pressure–velocity coupling the SIMPLE-algorithm was used. QUICK scheme and first order upwind scheme were employed for discretization of the momentum and energy convective terms respectively. Plate width and heating rate were used to vary the modified Rayleigh number over the range of 4.8×10 6 to 1.87×10 8 . Local and average heat transfer characteristics were compared with regarding to the inclination angle. The empirical expressions for local and average Nusselt number were correlated. It has been found that for inclination angle less than 10 ∘ , the flow and heat transfer characteristics are complicated and the average Nusselt number can not be correlated by one equation while for inclination angle larger than 10 ∘ , the average Nusselt number can be correlated into an elegant correlation.

Abstract:A numerical simulation was conducted to investigate the steady laminar natural convective heat transfer for air within the horizontal annulus between a heated triangular cylinder and its circular cylindrical enclosure. The Boussinesq approximation was applied to model the buoyancy-driven effect and the governing equations were solved using the finite volume method. Four different Rayleigh numbers and four different radius ratios were considered, and four different inclination angles for the inner triangular cylinder were investigated as well. The computed flow and temperature fields were demonstrated in the form of streamlines and isotherms. Variations of the maximum stream function and the local and average Nusselt numbers were displayed as functions of the above-mentioned parameters. Correlations of the average Nusselt number were proposed based on curve fitting. At constant radius ratio, inclination angles of the inner triangular cylinder are found to have negligible effects on the average Nusselt number.

Abstract:Numerical simulations based on the MARS (Multi-interface Advection and Reconstruction Solver) developed by one of the authors have been performed in order to understand the heat transfer mechanism of falling film flows along a vertical wall. In the present study, we focused on an internal structure, i.e. velocity profile and heat transfer. In this study, the velocity profiles in a failing film are categorized into three regions: substrate film region, solitary wave region, and capillary wave region with each characteristic. Moreover, small vortices can be found in the capillary wave region. Additionally, numerical results indicate that heat transfer mechanism is different for these three regions. We proposed new heat transfer evaluation manner as a function of the Prandtl number for these regions. This manner could contribute to a design work of failing film flow device.

Abstract:A numerical study ir presented for natural convection flow and heat transfer in a rectangular enclosure cooled from above with Jive discrete protruding heaters mounted on one vertical wall. The governing equations for natural convection and conjugate conduction within protruding heaters were solved using a finite volume method over a range of Rayleigh numbers from 5.0 x 10(5) to 1.0 x 10(7). Results showed the flow pattern and temperature profile within the entire enclosure for various power inputs. The correction of local Nusselt number versus modified Rayleigh number was presented Comparison of the numerical results with experimental data showed good agreement.

Abstract:In this paper, the natural convection in an enclosure with an internal isolated horizontal plate was numerically investigated. The fluid filled in the enclosure was air. It has been found that for a fixed plate position, the plate average Nusselt number increases with increase in Rayleigh number, and at a fixed Rayleigh number, there is a certain plate position for which the plate Nusselt number reaches its maximum. The flow pattern was also revealed by smoking technique and the agreement between the predicted streamlines and the flow visualization results is very good.

Abstract:Natural convection heat transfer to air from an array of five vertical parallel plane plates has been studied experimentally. Measurements of plate surface temperature and velocity between the plates are made under the condition of uniform surface heat flux. The local Nusselt numbers along the central line of the plates are obtained. The induced flow rate between the plates is estimated from the measured velocity profiles. The experimental results are compared with the numerical solution obtained by Miyatake and Fujii for two vertical parallel plane plates.

Abstract:Heat sinks appearing as one vertical cylinder with longitudinal fins are widely used in heat dissipation of LED bulbs and other electric devices. Numerical models of natural convection heat transfer are built based on CFD method. Thermal boundary layers are discussed along with the air flow patterns. Numerical results disclose that the edge of thermal boundary layer can be fitted into a sinusoidal function in 2D polar coordinate system. The local Nu distributions on both cylinder and fin surfaces are presented and analyzed. It is found that average Nusselt number along the fin length is approximately proportional to an exponential function of z. A new correlation is proposed by introducing finned ratio, achieving a deviation within ±10%.

Abstract:The conjugated convection-conduction heat transfer from a vertical steel plate with discrete heat sources simulating the heating pipes of the wrapped-type heat exchanger is investigated experimentally and numerically. The temperature of the plate distributes wavily along the height direction and the wave amplitudes increase with the widening heating space under both heat flux and temperature conditions. The expressions of the average Nusselt number and Rayleigh number computed by the average heater temperature remain as Num being equal to cRan, where c and n are the functions of heating space respectively. The correlations are obtained via fitting the experimental data with error ±5% within range of Ra from 5 × 108 to 5 × 109. The numerical results show that the uneven temperature distributions of the plate lead to increase of the velocity boundary layer thickness and fluctuation of the local Nusselt number along vertical direction.

Abstract:Three-dimensional elliptic simulations were carried out to study mixed-convection heat transfer in a horizontal square channel with heated and cooled side walls. Governing equations were solved for Re=100, Pγ=0.72 and Gγ/Re2=0∼50 by the SMIPLE method. Three-dimensional spiral flows were observed along the longitudinal direction of the channel. Secondary flow caused by buoyancy force gave rise to flow reversal at the thermally developing region. The flow reversal regions generated by secondary flow near the upper and lower walls partially prevented the main flow. This flow situation could be considered a fundamental phenomenon for mixed convection at the thermally developing region of the horizontal square channel. The effects of Gγ/Re2 on the local heat transfer and the intensity of secondary flow were also discussed.

Abstract:Numerical and experimental studies are carried out on natural convection heat transfer to air from an array of vertical parallel plates with protruding and discrete heat sources, such as IC packages. Two-dimensional (2-D) Navier-Stokes and energy equations including heat conduction through the plates and heat sources are numerically solved under the conditions of modified Grashof number Gr∗ = 2.3 × 103 ∼ 8.8 × 105 and plate height to spacing ratio L = lh = 8 ∼ 30. The numerical solutions agree well with the experimental values except for the large aspect ratio L = 30, where the three-dimensional (3-D) effects become significant. A correlation expression for the local Nusselt number is proposed; it can predict the protrusion surface temperature within ±20% error. A method for estimating the maximum inner temperature of the heat source is proposed, and the thermally optimum spacing of the parallel plates is discussed.

Abstract:Natural convection in a cubic enclosure with an internal isolated heated vertical plate was investigated both experimentally and numerically. The internal plate was suspended under the lower surface of the enclosure top wall and electrically heated. The six enclosure walls were at a lower constant temperature. The plate average Nusselt number and the air temperature in the enclosure symmetry plane were experimentally determined in the range of Ra = 8 × 104 to 5 × 107. Numerical simulations of laminar natural convection in the same configuration were performed. The agreement between the test data and the numerically predicted values is reasonably good, with a maximum deviation in plate average Nusselt number of 12.3 percent and that in air temperature of 9.4 percent. Detailed temperature and velocity distributions in four cross sections were presented for the case of Ra = 6.57 × 105.

Abstract:A new boundary condition treatment at the pseudo-outer boundary is proposed to numerically simulate the laminar natural convection heat transfer around a horizontal finned tube. It may be implemented easily while largely reducing the computational domain size. Numerical tests indicate that by using this boundary condition, the relative errors of the average Nusselt number of the laminar natural convection around a horizontal isothermal cylinder are less than 0.5% when compared with the benchmark solutions. The heat transfer of the laminar natural convection around a horizontal compound tube with different fin heights and a different number of fins are calculated using the conjugated computational method with primitive variables. The key findings are as follows: (1) for a fixed fin number, there exists an optimum relative fin height at which the total heat transfer rate of the finned tube approaches the maximum; (2) for a fixed relative fin height, there exists an optimum fin number at which the total heat transfer rate of the finned tube reaches its maximum; and (3) the tube fin positioning also has some effect on the heat transfer. Positioning a pair of fins in the vertical symmetric plane will deteriorate the overall heat transfer to some extent.

Abstract:Three dimensional N-S equations were solved by control volume method to investigate the unsteady natural convection in an enclosure with two hot circular parts at the bottom. The enclosure is H high, 2H wide and 2H long with the diameter of the hot part D = 2H/3. The Rayleigh number varied from 105 to 106. The results indicate the average Nusselt numbers of the two hot parts tend to be constant as time increases Ra<;5×105. When Ra ≥ 5×105, average Nusselt numbers began to oscillate with time. The oscillation frequency and amplitude increase with Rayleigh number increasing.

Abstract:Natural circulation, which is employed in the design of a small modular reactor, influences the removal of decay heat from the upper header of a pressure vessel under severe accident conditions. This phenomenon has been emphasized for a better understanding of passive safety systems. In this paper, a Reynolds-averaged turbulence model is used to simulate turbulent natural convection in a rectangular enclosure with a curved surface heated from below. The simulation results are first compared with the Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) of a differential heated cavity obtained from the literature. A good agreement demonstrated the ability of the employed computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach to predict turbulent natural convection flow and its induced heat transfer. Consequently, the turbulent natural convection formed in a rectangular enclosure heated by a curved surface was investigated. The ensemble average was employed to evaluate the local Nusselt number distribution quantitatively as well as the velocity and temperature distributions. Their dependency was also evaluated based on a systematic CFD simulation that covers a wide range of Rayleigh numbers. Least square regression analysis was employed to propose a correlation to predict the averaged Nusselt number as a function of the Rayleigh number. The influence of the thermal boundary conditions and the discrete heater was also determined.

Abstract:Transient natural convective heat transfer of liquid gallium, which has a Prandtl number of 0.023 at 310K, from a heated horizontal circular cylinder to its coaxial triangular enclosure is studied numerically by employing the control volume method. Two orientations of the triangular cylinder are investigated and the Grashof number is varied from 104 to 107. Development of natural convection is presented by means of the evolutions of the average Nusselt number over the outer triangular wall. Temporal stages during the course of development are identified and demonstrated through representative snapshots of streamlines and isotherms. The time-averaged Nusselt number is scaled with Grashof number for both conduction- and convection-dominated regimes. It is found that by placing horizontally the top side of the triangular cylinder, the convective flow becomes more stable and the overall heat transfer is enhanced. In addition, pitchfork bifurcation is explored quantitatively and its onset times are predicted as well.

Abstract:Numerical computations are performed for the natural convection in circular enclosures with inner polygonal cylinders. The polygon surface and the outer envelope are at constant but different temperatures. A body-fitted coordinate system is used. The coordinate system is generated via simple algebraic equations. The transformed governing equations are discretized on a control volume basis with power-law finite difference scheme. The SIMPLE-like algorithm is used to deal with the linkage between pressure and velocities. The numerical results are compared with the experimental data available in the literature, and the agreement between the numerical and experimental results are very good.
