Abstract:Within the framework of generalized factorization of higher-twist contributions, including modification to splitting functions of both quark and gluon, we get and numerically resolve the medium-modified DGLAP (mDGLAP) evolution equations. With Woods-Saxon nuclear geometry and Hirano 3D ideal hydrodynamic simulations of hot medium, we study the medium modified fragmentation functions (mFF) in DIS and Au+Au collisions in RHIC. Our calculation imply that the parton density in hot medium produced in RHIC is about 30 times larger than cold nucleon.

Abstract:Based on a multiphase transport model, medium modifications of prompt photon-tagged jet fragmentation function are investigated by comparing prompt photon-tagged hadron azimuthal correlation in Au + Au collisions (0%-40%) with that in p + p collisions at root(NN)-N-S = 200 GeV. The measured modification factor I-AA increases with the increasing integration range of the away side, which reveals a medium-modified jet shape in which the medium enhancement of soft particles is preferentially located far away from the jet axis. I-AA largely results from strong interactions between jets and partonic matter. However, both hadronization of coalescence and hadronic rescatterings play certain roles to modify the I-AA. These behaviors reflect a dynamical evolution of modifications of the prompt photon-tagged jet fragmentation function in high-energy heavy-ion collisions.

Abstract:Within the framework of the constituent quark model, it is shown that the single-hadron fragmentation function of a parton can be expressed as a convolution of a shower diquark or triquark distribution function and quark recombination probability if the interference between amplitudes of quark recombination with different momenta is neglected. The recombination probability is determined by the hadron's wave function in the constituent quark model. The shower diquark or triquark distribution functions of a fragmenting jet are defined in terms of overlapping matrices of constituent quarks and parton field operators. They are similar in form to dihadron or trihadron fragmentation functions in terms of parton operator and hadron states. Extending the formalism to the field theory at finite temperature, we automatically derive contributions to the effective single-hadron fragmentation function from the recombination of shower and thermal constituent quarks. Such contributions involve single-quark or diquark distribution functions that in turn can be related to diquark or triquark distribution functions by means of sum rules. We also derive QCD evolution equations for quark distribution functions that in turn determine the evolution of the effective jet fragmentation functions in a thermal medium.

Abstract:Quark-quark double scattering in eA DIS and its contribution to quark and anti-quark fragmentation functions are investigated with the generalized factorization of the relevant twist-four processes in pQCD. It is shown that the resulting modifications to quark and anti-quark fragmentation functions are different. While the numerical size of these effects cannot be determined from pQCD, the structure of our result leads to a number of qualitative predictions for the relative size of the effect for different hadrons. These qualitative predictions agree with the multiplicity ratios for positive and negative hadrons as observed by HERMES.

Abstract:Recent progress in the study of jet modification in hot medium and its consequences in high-energy heavy-ion collisions is reviewed. In particular, I will discuss energy loss for propagating heavy quarks and the resulting modified fragmentation function. Medium modification of the parton fragmentation function due to quark recombination is formulated within finite temperature field theory and the implication for the search for a deconfined quark-gluon plasma is also discussed.

Abstract:Initial conditions are required to solve medium modified Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi (mDGLAP) evolution equations for modified fragmentation functions due to multiple scatterings and parton energy loss. Such initial conditions should in principle include energy loss for partons at scale Q(0) above which mDGLAP evolution equations can be applied. Several models for the initial condition motivated by induced gluon bremsstrahlung in perturbative QCD are used to calculate the modified fragmentation functions in nuclear medium and to extract the jet transport parameter (q) over cap from fits to experimental data in deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) off nuclei. The model with a Poisson convolution of multiple gluon emissions is found to provide the overall best chi(2)/d.o.f. fit to the HERMES data and gives a value of (q) over cap (0) approximate to 0.020 +/- 0.005 GeV2/fm at the center of a large nucleus.

Abstract:Within the framework of generalized factorization of higher-twist contributions to semi-inclusive cross sections of deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) off a large nucleus, multiple parton scattering leads to an effective medium-modified fragmentation function and the corresponding medium-modified DGLAP evolution equations. We extend the study to include gluon multiple scattering and induced quark-antiquark production via gluon fusion. We numerically solve these medium-modified DGLAP (mDGLAP) evolution equations and study the scale (Q(2)), energy (E), length (L), and jet transport parameter ((q) over cap) dependence of the modified fragmentation functions for a jet propagating in a uniform medium with finite length (a "brick" problem). We also discuss the concept of parton energy loss within such mDGLAP evolution equations and its connection to the modified fragmentation functions. With a realistic Wood-Saxon nuclear geometry, we calculate the modified fragmentation functions and compare them to experimental data on DIS off large nuclei. The extracted jet transport parameter at the center of a large nucleus is found to be (q) over cap (0) = 0.024 +/- 0.008 GeV2/fm.

Abstract:To investigate the influence of nuclear finite-size effects on the fragmentation in heavy-ion collisions, the fragment charge distributions of ${}^{40}$Ca+${}^{40}$Ca, ${}^{197}$Au+${}^{197}$Au, ${}^{120}$Xe+${}^{129}$Sn, and ${}^{58}$Ni+${}^{48}$Ca at intermediate incident energies are studied by using the improved quantum molecular dynamics model. Both the width of the wave packet at the coordinate space and the surface energy term strongly affect the formation and stability of fragments at intermediate-low energies. The wave-packet width influences the stability and the central densities of the initial nuclei. With increase of incident energies, the influence of the detail in description of individual nucleons and of their interaction via mean field on the fragment distributions weakens gradually.

Abstract:The medium modification of dihadron fragmentation functions in the deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) off a large nucleus is studied within the framework of the higher-twist expansion in the collinear factorization formalism. It is demonstrated that the modification due to multiple parton scattering in the nuclear medium is similar to that of the single hadron fragmentation function. However, the conditional distribution of the associated hadron given by the ratio of dihadron to single hadron fragmentation function shows only slight modification. The final results depend modestly on the nuclear density distribution. Comparisons with the experimental results on two hadron correlations as obtained by the HERMES collaboration at DESY are presented.
Heavy quark fragmentation function in 't Hooft Model

Abstract:We carry out a comprehensive study of the quark-to-meson fragmentation function in the 't Hooft model, i.e., the two-dimensional Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) in $N_c\to \infty$ limit, following the operator definition pioneered by Collins and Soper. We apply the Hamiltonian approach as well as the diagrammatic approach to construct the functional form of the quark-to-meson fragmentation function in terms of the meson's light-cone wave function. For the sake of comparison, we also investigate the heavy quark fragmentation into quarkonium in two-dimensional QCD within the framework of the nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization, at the lowest order in quark velocity. In the heavy quark limit, the quark fragmentation function obtained from the {\it ab initio} method agrees well, both analytically and numerically, with that obtained from the NRQCD approach. This agreement might be regarded as a nontrivial justification for the validity of both field-theoretical approaches to compute the heavy quark fragmentation function.

Abstract:Exploiting the concept of the dinuclear system, the interaction potential energy of two fragments that are quite close to each other is analyzed. A semi-classical method is used to calculate fission fragment yields using a simplified two-dimensional scission-point model. By considering the tip-to-tip orientation at the scission point of the fission process, we investigate the mass, charge, and kinetic-energy distributions of the fission fragments, for excitation energies in the 0-20 MeV range. Our results show that the fission fragment distributions are reproduced quite well, including the recent experimental results for the isotone chain [D Ramos et al. Phys. Rev. C 97, 054612 (2018)]. Thus, the simplified model is useful for multi-parameter global measurements of fission products.

Abstract:The hadronization of a high-energy parton is described by fragmentation functions which are introduced through QCD factorizations. While the hadronization mechanism per se remains uknown, fragmentation functions can still be investigated qualitatively and quantitatively. The qualitative study mainly concentrates on extracting genuine features based on the operator definition in quantum field theory. The quantitative research focuses on describing a variety of experimental data employing the fragmentation function given by the parameterizations or model calculations. With the foundation of the transverse-momentum-dependent factorization, the QCD evolution of leading twist transverse-momentum-dependent fragmentation functions has also been established. In addition, the universality of fragmentation functions has been proven, albeit model-dependently, so that it is possible to perform a global analysis of experimental data in different high-energy reactions. The collective efforts may eventually reveal important information hidden in the shadow of nonperturbative physics. This review covers the following topics: transverse-momentum-dependent factorization and the corresponding QCD evolution, spin-dependent fragmentation functions at leading and higher twists, several experimental measurements and corresponding phenomenological studies, and some model calculations.

Abstract:Based on a multiphase transport model, the measured jet fragmentation function ratio of Pb + Pb collisions to p + p collisions in CERN Large Hadron Collider experiments is decomposed into two parts, corresponding to the two contributions of jet hadronization from fragmentation and coalescence. The results suggest an existence of distinct competitions between two jet hadronization mechanisms for different xi = ln(1/z) ranges in different centrality bins. The jet fragmentation functions for different types of hadrons (mesons and baryons) are proposed as a good probe to study the competition between fragmentation and coalescence for the jet hardonization in high-energy heavy-ion collisions.

Abstract:Medium modification of dihadron fragmentation functions due to gluon bremsstrahlung induced by multiple partonic scattering is studied in both deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) off large nuclei and high-energy heavy-ion collisions within the same framework of twist expansion. The modification for dihadrons is found to closely follow that for single hadrons, leading to a weak nuclear suppression of their ratios in DIS experiments. A mild enhancement of the near-side correlation of two high transverse momentum hadrons with increasing centrality is found in heavy-ion collisions due to trigger bias and the rise in parton energy loss with centrality. Successful comparisons between theory and experiment for multihadron observables in both confining and deconfined media offer comprehensive evidence for partonic energy loss as the mechanism of jet modification in dense matter.
