Abstract:Photocatalysis is applied increasingly in addressing and solving environmental and energy-related problems. Especially the TiO₂-derived catalysts attract attention because of their catalytic efficiency, wide range of applications, ease in use, and low cost (it costs about 150 Yuan a kilogram in China). This review first describes the principles of photocatalytic destruction by semiconductors and then focuses on degradation rates and reaction mechanisms in a variety of photocatalytic uses of modified TiO(2). Finally, these concepts are illustrated by selected examples relating to the photocatalytic degradation of organic persistent pollutants, such as polychlorinated benzenes (PCBz), biphenyls (PCB) and dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). And some approaches towards industrial application are analyzed.

Abstract:New and efficient heterogeneous photocatalytic materials, H3PW12O40/TiO2 and H6P2W18O62/TiO2, with anatase crystalline phase, dual-pore structures (micro- and meso-porosity), and nanometer sizes (average particle size of 6nm) were prepared by combination of the methods of sol–gel and hydrothermal treatment at a lower temperature (200°C, 2°C/min). Compositions, structures, physicochemical properties, and surface morphology of the composites were characterized by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrum (ICP-AES), X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, UV diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV/DRS), 31P magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR, Raman scattering spectra, nitrogen adsorption/desorption determination, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. It indicated that the primary Keggin or Dawson structure remained intact after immobilization of the unit into TiO2 network, and hydrogen bonding and chemical interactions between the unit and the anatase network existed in the composites. Both of the composites exhibited visible-light photocatalytic activity to degradation of an aqueous organophosphorus pesticide, parathion-methyl, and the deactivation of the catalysts was hardly observed after five times catalytic cycling.

Photocatalytic Degradation of 2,4-Dichlorophenol by TiO2 Intercalated Talc Nanocomposite

Abstract:Novel nanocomposites have been prepared by intercalating TiO2 nanoparticles into talc. The nanocomposites have been verified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) from the appearance of a characteristic diffraction peak of TiO2. Thermal behavior of the prepared samples is examined by thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), which have shown no TiO2 particles on the surface of the talc. The TiO2 particles are found in the layers of talc by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method, which have shown the increase of specific surface areas and total pore volumes and the decline of average pore diameters. As the strong adsorption ability of talc can intensify the power of photon absorption and capture-recombination carriers, more than 99.5% of 2,4-dichlorophenol can be degraded in 1h by the nanocomposite under an ultraviolet lamp in neutral solution and room temperature after reaching adsorption equilibrium, and the result of adsorbance is in accord with the first-order kinetic. The degradation rate was maintained at about 99% after 20 times. Therefore, the prepared talc/TiO2 nanocomposite is an efficient, stable, and recyclable material for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The degradation of methyl parathion (O,O-dimethyl-O-(4-nitrophenyl)-phosphorothioate) using anatase titanium dioxide (TiO2) powder as heterogeneous sonocatalysts is reported. The influences of reaction parameters such as the species of TiO2 sonocatalysts, methyl parathion concentrations, TiO2 adding amount, pH, ultrasonic intensity, ultrasonic frequency and temperature have been investigated and the optimal conditions for eliminating methyl parathion have been identified. The efficiencies of sonocatalytic degradation in both nanometer and ordinary anatase systems are compared and the results indicate that the sonocatalytic activity of nanometer anatase TiO2 powder is better than that of ordinary anatase TiO2 powder. The primary degradation and the total mineralization of methyl parathion have been monitored by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and UV–vis spectra, respectively. Methyl parathion got destroyed to some extent in both nanometer and ordinary anatase systems under ultrasonic irradiation. The kinetics for the degradation process of methyl parathion follows the first-order reaction. The degradation ratio of methyl parathion surpassed 90% within 50min in the optimal experiment conditions.
Efficient and Stable Degradation of Triazophos Pesticide by TiO2/WO3 Nanocomposites with S-Scheme Heterojunctions and Oxygen Defects

Abstract:The prevalent utilization of organophosphorus pesticides presents a profound risk to the global environment, necessitating the immediate development of a secure and reliable methodology to mitigate this hazard. Photocatalytic technology, through the generation of robust oxidizing free radicals by suitable catalysts, offers a viable solution by effectively oxidizing organophosphorus pesticides, thus preserving environmental well-being. In this study, we successfully synthesized TiO2/WO3 (TO/WO) nanocomposites characterized by oxygen defects and S-scheme heterojunctions, demonstrating superior photocatalytic activity in the degradation of triazophos. Notably, the 60-TO/WO nanocomposite, wherein the proportion of WO comprises 60% of the total, exhibited optimal photocatalytic degradation activity, achieving a degradation rate of 78% within 120 min, and demonstrating exceptional stability, maintaining impressive degradation activity across four cycles. This performance was notably superior to that of standalone TO and WO. The presence of oxygen defects in WO was corroborated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The mechanism at the heterojunction of the 60-TO/WO nanocomposite, identified as an S-scheme, was also confirmed by EPR and theoretical computations. Oxygen defects expedite charge transfer and effectively enhance the photocatalytic reaction, while the S-scheme effectively segregates photogenerated electrons and holes, thereby optimizing the photocatalytic oxidation of triazophos. This study introduces a novel nanocomposite material, characterized by oxygen defects and the S-scheme heterojunction, capable of effectively degrading triazophos and promoting environmental health.

Abstract:A new photocatalyst, Nafion-coated photocatalyst, was prepared to improve the decomposition of the low-content pesticide in agricultural wastewater. The Nafion-coated P25 photocatalyst improved adsorption of TiO2 photocatalyst to ipconazole. The ipconazole can be decomposed 50% in 21 h, while the other organics do not be composed by Nafion-coated P25. XPS spectra suggested that the sulfonic acid group of Nafion located on the top of Nafion-coated layer. The Nafion improved the adsorption of P25 to ipconazole.

Abstract:ABSTRACT This paper demonstrates the successful synthesis of TiO2 with (001) crystal plane; its morphology and structure were characterized using XRD, TEM and Raman spectrometer. The results showed that TiO2 nanosheets were bounded by (001) facets on both the top and bottom. TiO2-001/UV photocatalytic process was proved to be a powerful method for degrading tri(chloro-propyl) phosphate (TCPP) in aqueous solution. Under the given parameters, 95% of TCPP was removed in 360 min. The photodegradation followed the pseudo-first-order kinetic reaction. The reactive species during photocatalytic oxidation of TiO2-001 was mainly hydroxyl radical. TCPP was decomposed into small molecule organics by hydroxyl radicals, along with the release of and Cl−, and most of these intermediates were eventually degraded into carbon dioxide and water. Abstract:Based on preparation of SnO_2 sol by sol-gel method,nano-meter photocatalytic compound of TiO_2/SnO_2 was prepared and the atom ratio of titanium to tin on the surface is 85∶15(by XPS analysis).The photocatalytic compound was used to degrade the pesticide waste of parathion and the experimental results indicated that the photocatalytic activity of photocatalytic compound is higher than that of TiO_2.Probably the reason is that the SnO_2 in TiO_2/SnO_2 photocatalytic compound formed the transferring place for electron,decreased the composition of electron-cavity,then enhanced the photocatalytic properties of the photocatalytic compound.
Degradation of pesticides chlorpyrifos, cypermethrin and chlorothalonil in aqueous solution by TiO2 photocatalysis

Abstract:Degradation of pesticides chlorpyrifos, cypermethrin and chlorothalonil in aqueous solution by TiO2 photocatalysis under UVA (365 nm) irradiation was examined. Enhancement of degradation and improvement in biodegradability index (BOD5/COD ratio) by H2O2 addition were also evaluated. UVA irradiation per se produced insignificant degradation of the pesticides. In UV/TiO2 photocatalysis (TiO2 1.5 g L(-1), pH 6 and 300 min irradiation), COD and TOC removal were 25.95 and 8.45%, respectively. In UV/TiO2/H2O2 photocatalysis (TiO2 1.5 g L(-1), H2O2 100 mg L(-1), pH 6 and 300 min irradiation), COD and TOC removal were 53.62 and 21.54%, respectively and biodegradability index improved to 0.26. Ammonia-nitrogen (NH3-N) decreased from 22 to 7.8 mg L(-1) and nitrate-nitrogen (NO3(-)-N) increased from 0.7 to 13.8 mg L(-1) in 300 min, indicating mineralization. Photocatalytic degradation followed pseudo-first order kinetics with rate constant (k) of 0.0025 and 0.0008 min(-1) for COD and TOC removal, respectively. FTIR spectra indicated degradation of the organic bonds of the pesticides. UV/TiO2/H2O2 photocatalysis is effective in degradation of pesticides chlorpyrifos, cypermethrin and chlorothalonil in aqueous solution. UV/TiO2/H2O2 photocatalysis may be applied as pretreatment of a chlorpyrifos, cypermethrin and chlorothalonil pesticide wastewater at pH 6, for biological treatment.

Abstract:Dimethoate, a systemic insecticide, has been used extensively in vegetable production. Insecticide residues in treated vegetables, however, pose a potential risk to consumers. Photocatalytic degradation is a new alternative to managing pesticide residues. In this study, the degradation of dimethoate in Bok choy was investigated under the field conditions using cerium-doped nano titanium dioxide (TiO2/Ce) hydrosol as a photocatalyst. The results show that TiO2/Ce hydrosol can accelerate the degradation of dimethoate in Bok choy. Specifically, the application of TiO2/Ce hydrosol significantly increased the reactive oxygen species (ROS) contents in the treated Bok choy, which speeds up the degradation of dimethoate. Ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS) analysis detected three major degradation products, including omethoate, O,O,S-trimethyl thiophosphorothioate, and 1,2-Bis (acetyl-N-methyl-) methane disulfide. Two potential photodegradation pathways have been proposed based on the intermediate products. To understand the relationship between photodegradation and the molecular structure of target insecticides, we investigated the bond length, Mulliken atomic charge and frontier electron density of dimethoate using ab initio quantum analysis. These results suggest the P = S, P-S and S-C of dimethoate are the initiation sites for the photocatalytic reaction in Bok choy, which is consistent with our empirical data.

Abstract:The widespread use of organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) in foods, poses a serious threat to human and environmental health, it is crucial to develop methods that can efficiently degrade residual OPPs. Herein, a chiral TiO 2 photocatalyst was developed by modification TiO 2 with D-cys/Au NPs (DAT) for the simultaneous degradation of four OPPs (chlorpyrifos, chlorpyrifos-methyl, malathion, and parathion) by natural light. The influence of D-Au NPs concentration on the degradation process was optimized, along with the initial pesticide concentration. Under optimal conditions, the photocatalytic degradation efficiencies of DAT for four OPPs were 96.7 %, 56.9 %, 42.6 %, and 49.2 %, respectively, after 12 h of natural light exposure. 12 degradation products of OPPs were identified, among which three products were identified for the first time. The degradation pathway revealed that the degradation of OPPs by DAT involves the oxidation of the P═S bond and the cleavage of the P-O bond and C-O bond. This study establishes a theoretical foundation for applying chiral TiO 2 nanomaterials for the photocatalytic degradation of OPPs in foods.

Abstract:Organic compounds, generated from different industries, produce a range of the problematic pollutants in wastewater. TiO2 based photocatalysts are novel materials that exhibit excellent absorption behavior toward organic compounds in wastewater due to their outstanding properties including nontoxicity, high photocatalytic degradation ability, and excellent thermal and chemical stabilities. However, several challenges exist regarding TiO2 applications for organic effluents such as particle aggregation, mass transfer limitation, poor affinity, high band energy, scattering conditions, and difficulty of recovery. Therefore, more design and optimization testing need to be conducted on the treatment conditions in order to reach higher removal efficiencies with lower costs. A variety of parameters of TiO2 based photocatalysts need to be studied: substrate, light intensity, dopant, particle size, structure. These parameters, which affect TiO2 photocatalytic activity on organic pollutants, are discussed in the current review. Thus, making the photocatalyst more anticipated and conducive to further research and development.

The Catalytic Role of Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles as a Support Material for TiO2 and ZnO on Chlorpyrifos Photodegradation in an Aqueous Solution

Abstract:Chlorpyrifos (CP) is a globally used pesticide with acute toxicity. This work studied the photocatalytic degradation of CP using TiO2, ZnO nanoparticles, and nanocomposites of TiO2 and ZnO supported on SPIONs (SPION@SiO2@TiO2 and SPION@SiO2@ZnO). The nanocomposites were synthesized by multi-step incipient wetness impregnation. The effects of the initial pH, catalyst type, and dose were evaluated. The nanocomposites of SPION@SiO2@TiO2 and SPION@SiO2@ZnO showed higher CP photodegradation levels than free nanoparticles, reaching 95.6% and 82.3%, respectively, at pH 7. The findings indicate that iron oxide, as a support material for TiO2 and ZnO, extended absorption edges and delayed the electron–hole recombination of the nanocomposites, improving their photocatalytic efficiency. At the same time, these nanocomposites, especially SPION@SiO2@TiO2, showed efficient degradation of 3,5,6-trichloropyridinol (TCP), one of the final metabolites of CP. The stability and reuse of this nanocomposite were also evaluated, with 74.6% efficiency found after six cycles. Therefore, this nanomaterial represents an eco-friendly, reusable, and effective alternative for the degradation of chlorpyrifos in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:TiO2/SiO2 (Ti:Si=10:1) nanoparticles were first prepared by ultrasound-assisted hydrolysis and then treated by 10M NaOH at 110°C for 20h to form titania nanotubes. The formed samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N2-adsorption, UV–vis absorption spectra and ESR spectrometer. Result indicates that the samples prepared are nanotubular structure with opened ends. The diameter of nanotubes is about 10nm and their length is about 100nm. The surface area of TiO2 nanotubes is 286m2/g. The ESR signals show that there are more OH on the surface of TiO2 nanotubes than that on the surface of TiO2/SiO2 nanoparticles. The photocatalytic degradation of PCP on TiO2 nanotubes assisted by microwave in aqueous solution was investigated. The result indicates that the degradation rate in the microwave assisted photocatalysis process (MPC) is faster than that in other processes including microwave assisted photolytic (MDP), microwave alone process (MP) and dark process (DP). The photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanotubes is higher than that of P25 and TiO2/SiO2 nanoparticles. It may be contributed to the capacity of absorption to the UV–vis irradiation and specific surface area among the photocatalysts. PCP is effectively degraded in the MPC on TiO2 nanotubes. The removal of 40mg/L PCP is 93.5% and the CODcr decrease is 51.8% in 20min. Along with the degradation of PCP, pH of solution decreases from 10.32 to 7.5 and the dechlorination is completed in 12min. The major intermediates of PCP in MPC on TiO2 nanotubes were identified by GC/MS, including tetrachlorophenols, trichlorophenols, tetrachlorocatechol, tetrachlorohydroquinone. Based on the results, the possible photocatalytic degradation pathways of PCP on TiO2 in MPC were proposed.

Abstract:The present research studies the photocatalytic degradation of a pesticide using TiO2 and Fe3O4 nanoparticles supported on ZnO mesoporous (mZnO) substrate. Chlorpyrifos is an organophosphate pesticide with a C9H11Cl3NO3PS chemical formula. It is broadly utilized in agricultural fields to control product pests. The chlorpyrifos toxicity is acute and still dangerous to any aquatic organisms. The mZnO/TiO2-Fe3O4 material was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and N2 adsorption and desorption (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller; BET). In order to optimize three important operating parameters, i.e., chlorpyrifos concentration, mZnO/TiO2-Fe3O4 nanocomposite amount, and pH, for photocatalytic degradation of chlorpyrifos, response surface methodology (RSM) was applied. The central composite design (CCD) including 20 experiments was used to conduct experiments. The highest photodegradation performance of about 94.8% was obtained for a chlorpyrifos concentration of 8 ppm, a pH of 10, and an amount of mZnO/TiO2-Fe3O4 nanocomposite of 60 mg. The degradation of chlorpyrifos using mZnO/TiO2-Fe3O4 presented good performance (more than 94%). The photocatalytic reaction followed pseudo-first-order kinetics with a rate constant of 0.058 min−1 for chlorpyrifos degradation. The results propose that mZnO/TiO2-Fe3O4 nanocomposite is a suitable alternative for the degradation of chlorpyrifos in aqueous solution. The improved photocatalytic efficiency could be attributed to the effective separation of electron-hole pairs via a Z-scheme mechanism.
