Abstract:AIM: Isolation and structural elucidation of the chemical constituents of the rhizomes of Chinese medicinal plant Phlomis umbrosa Turcz. METHODS: The rhizomes were extracted with 95% EtOH by percolation and the crude extracts were purified by using silica gel chromatography. IR, UV, MS, 1H and 13CNMR spectra were employed for structural identification. RESULTS: Three compounds named umbroside (1) 4-hydroxymethyl-2-furaldehyde (2) and sculponeatin A (3) were isolated. CONCLUSION: Umbroside (1) and 4-hydroxymethyl-2-furaldehyde (2) were new compounds, and sculponeatin A (3) was a known B-seco-kaurene type compound unreported previously from this plant. The total 1H and 13CNMR data of sculponeatin A were assigned for first time.

Abstract:Two new xanthone glycosides and six known compounds were isolated from the roots of Pteris multifida. Based on spectroscopic and chemical methods, the structures of the new compounds were elucidated as 1-hydroxy-4,7-dimethoxy-S-(3-methyl-2-butenyl)-6-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2)-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->3)]-beta-D-glucopyranosylxanthone (1), and 1,3-dihydroxy-7-methoxy-8-(3-methyl-2-butenyl)-6-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2)-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->3)]-beta-D-glucopyranosylxanthone (2), respectively.

Abstract:Two new diastereoisomeric phenolic compounds ( 1 , 2 ) have been isolated from the methanol extract of Polygonatum cyrtonema Hua leaves. Their structures were elucidated as (1S,2R) and (1S,2S)-1-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-1-ethoxypropan-2-ols by spectroscopic data ( 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, HSQC, HMBC, HR-ESI-MS, and ORD). In addition, compounds 1 and 2 displayed potential aldose reductase inhibitory activities with IC 50 values of 29.05 and 22.38 μM, respectively.

Abstract:Two new phenolic glycoside, 2-methoxy-4-hydroxylphenyl-1-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1" -> 6')-beta-D-glucopyranoside. (1) and threo-3methoxy-5-hydroxy-phenylpropanetriol-8-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (2), were isolated from the stems of Zanthoxylum armatum. The compounds 1 and 2 showed weak scavenging activity in DPPH free radical assay with IC50 values of 323 and 114 mM, respectively.[GRAPHICS].

Abstract:Two new biphenylpropanoids ( 1 and 2 ) were isolated from the rhizomes of Acorus tatarinowii Schott. The structures of compounds 1 and 2 were determined by means of extensive spectroscopic methods. Their structures were identified as ( R )-3-[1-hydroxy-3-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)propan-2-yl]-4,5-dimethoxy methyl benzoate ( 1 ) and ( R )-3-[1-hydroxy-3-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)propan-2-yl]-4,5-dimethoxy ethyl benzoate ( 2 ). In addition, the xanthine oxidase (XOD) inhibitory activity of the isolated compounds was reported. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibited weak XOD inhibitory activity in the test.

Abstract:Two new triterpenoids were isolated from the dried carpophore of Xanthoceras sorbifolia Bunge (Sapindaceae). By means of spectroscopic data (1 D and 2D NMR, ESI-MS) and chemical evidence, their structures were established as 16-O-acetyl-21-O-(3',4'-di-O-angeloyl)-beta-D-fucopyranosyl theasapogenol B (1) and 3 beta,23-dihyroxy-lup-20(29)en-28-oic acid -23-caffeate (2).

Abstract:From the 95% EtOH extract of the cortexes of Polygala tenuifolia, four new phenones and three known xanthones were isolated. The structures of the four new phenones were identified as 4-O-[alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl(1 -> 2)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl]-2-hydroxyl-6-methoxybenzophenone (tenuiphenone A, 1), 3,5-di-C-beta-glueopyranosyl-2,4,6,3'-tetrahydroxybenzophenone (tenuiphenone B, 2), 21,41,6'-trihydroxyphenyl-(24Z)-triacontene-1-one (tenuiphenone C, 3), 2',4',6'-trihydroxyphenyl-(26Z)-dotriacontene-1-one (tenuiphenone D, 4) respectively, on the basis of spectroscopic analyses. The isolation of I and 2 supplied an evidence for the hypothesis that xanthone was biosynthesized from benzophenone in the plants.

Abstract:Two polyketides, stemonones A (1) and B (2) with new skeletons, were isolated from the roots of Stemona tuberosa. Their absolute structures were fully characterized by comprehensive spectroscopic analyses and comparison of experimental electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra with calculated ones. The plausible biosynthetic pathways for 1 and 2 were also proposed. Anti-inflammatory assay confirmed that the two compounds showed moderate inhibitory effects on β-glucuronidase release in rat polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) induced by platelet-activating factor.

Abstract:A phytochemical investigation on the constituents from Euphorbia humifusa Willd. has resulted in the isolation of three new alpha-pyrrolidinonoidal compounds, 5beta-methoxy-4beta-hydroxy-3-methylene-alpha-pyrrolidinone (1), 5beta-methoxy-4alpha-hydroxy-3-methylene-alpha-pyrrolidinone (2), and 5beta-butoxy-4alpha-hydroxy-3-methylene-alpha-pyrrolidinone (3), and three new glycosides including an indole glycoside, 3-(2-hydroxyethyl)-5-(1-O-beta-glucopyranosyloxy)-indole (4), an ionone glycoside, 3-oxo-7,8-dihydro-alpha-ionone-11-O-beta-glucoside (5), and a hemiterpene glycoside, 1-(4-hydroxy-2-methyl-2-buten-1-yl)-6- (3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoyl)-beta-d-glucose (6), along with 10 known compounds. Their structures were elucidated by analysis of 1D and 2D NMR spectral data. The structure of 1 was further confirmed by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

Abstract:Two new phenolic glycosides, Diplostephioside D ( 1 ) and Diplostephioside E ( 2 ) together with ten known phenols ( 3 – 12 ) were isolated from the dried roots of Iris domestica (L.) Goldblatt & Mabb. Among them, compounds 4 – 9 have not been reported previously from the family Iridaceae. The chemical structures were elucidated based on extensive spectroscopic experiments, including 1D and 2D NMR as well as HR-ESI-MS, and comparison with those reported in the literature. All of the isolated compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxic activity against HeLa cells. Compounds 1 , 2 , 4 , 8 and 12 showed cytotoxic activities with IC 50 values ranging from 13.52 ± 1.52 to 53.33 ± 1.40 μM.

Abstract:Two new triterpenoids, namely 24-methylene-5,24-dien-19(10→9)- abeo -8 α ,9 β ,10 α -eupha-3 β -ol ( 1 ) and 24-methyl-5,23-dien-19(10→9)- abeo -8 α ,9 β ,10 α -eupha-3 β -ol ( 2 ) were isolated from the stems of Euphorbia royleana , together with three known analogs. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated by extensive 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, HSQC, HMBC, 1 H- 1 H COSY, ROESY and HR-MS spectroscopic analyses.

Abstract:The corneal ulcers and perforations which inevitably occur with severe alkali burns have been prevented in six of eight eyes by the use of collagenase inhibitors. This indicates that collagenase is the cause of the ulcers and suggests an effective treatment for alkali burns and other ulcered states of the cornea where collagenase has been isolated.

Abstract:Three new phenolic compounds (1–3), together with 16 known compounds (4–19), were isolated from the roots of Glycyrrhiza yunnanensis Cheng f. et L. K. Dai. On the basis of 1D and 2D NMR, HR-ESI-MS, and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopic analysis, structures of the new compounds were elucidated as 2-(2′-methoxy-4′-hydroxy)-aryl-3-methy-6-hydroxy-benzofuran (1), (2S)-6,7-(2,2-dimethyldihydropyrano)-8-prenyl-4′-hydroxyflavanone (2), and 6-prenyl-7,3′,4′-trihydroxyflavone (3). Compounds 1, 3, 5, 12, 14, 15 and 16 showed antioxidant activity by an ABTS-based assay.

Abstract:Phytochemical investigation on the rhizomes of Paris yunnanensis led to the isolation of two undescribed phenolic glycosides ( 1 and 2 ), and three known analogues ( 3 - 5 ). Their structures were determined by extensive spectroscopic analysis, including 1D and 2D NMR, MS, and UV. Among them, compounds 1 and 2 have a rare 4- O - β -D-apiofuranosyl group. The DPPH radical scavenging activities of the isolated compounds were evaluated and compound 3 exhibited moderate DPPH radical scavenging activity with an EC 50 value of 72.6 μM, while Vitamin C was used as the positive control (EC 50 = 24.6 μM).

Abstract:Aim To study the chemical constituents of Cypripedium tibeticum. Methods Compounds were isolated by repeated silica gel chromatography and purified on Sephadex LH-20 and structures were determined by spectral analysis. Results Cypritibetquinones A and B were isolated from the ethyl acetate residue and their structures were determined as 7-hydroxy-2-methoxy-1, 4-phenanthraquinone ( 1 ) and 7-hydroxy-2,10-dimethoxy-1,4-phenanthraquinone ( 2 ), respectively, by extensive spectral analyses. Conclusion Cypritibetquinones A and B are two new phenanthraquinones.
