Abstract:The author examines in detail the reception of Arbuzov's play "My Poor Marat" on the Chinese stage since 2000, analyzes the opinions of critics and audience reactions, as well as other types of responses to this dramatic text in modern Chinese culture. The problem of perception of the Russian dramaturgy of the twentieth century in China is raised on the material of the modern Chinese artistic and critical reception of Alexey Arbuzov's play "My Poor Marat" (1964). The work of Alexey Arbuzov, one of the most sought-after Soviet playwrights on the world stage, is the main subject of research. The play of this playwright "My Poor Marat" has been repeatedly staged in Chinese theaters, and in 2021 it again proved to be in demand by theatrical figures and the audience, which indicates the relevance of this study. The scientific novelty of the research consists in the fact that the work has studied the most popular performances of "My Poor Marat" in China since 2000, as well as an art exhibition based on the play. The practical significance of the results obtained is that their analysis reflects the dynamics of the development of Chinese society, changes in mentality, dominant themes of the time, dialogue with other cultures and various aesthetic systems, the specifics of theatrical life and the theatrical market in the country. The conclusion is made that the stage reception of Russian drama in China is closely connected with the socio-political aspect of the country's life and national mentality, affects the official ideology and individual consciousness, reflects the dialogue of foreign cultural factors and traditional forms of national culture.

Abstract:The influence of Russian literature on contemporary Chinese writing is a fact.As is also known,the influence is both positive and negative.This essay argues that contemporary Chinese writers have imitated Russian literature and grafted its elements on to their own literary tradition,without sighting what the Russian writers respect as free will.By exploring how they have misread Russian literature,the essay further maintains that so many negative effects of the influence are partially due to their biased interpretations and distorted portrayals of Russian literature.

Abstract:Lyudmila Petrushevskaya is one of the most famous dramatists of modern Russia. Her writing styles are deeply influenced by Chekhov's drama tradition. These influences are not just seen in her way of representing the scenes of ordinary life in order to weaken the theatrical tensions of dramatic conflicts,or in her way of using the blockade of dialogues to weaken the antagonistic relations between her characters. In short,they are not just the outside forms,but a kind of aesthetic position based on her tragi-comical understanding of the tragic nature of everyday life. This tragi-comical idea greatly deepen Lyudmila Petrushevskaya's understanding of the absurdity of modern Russian society and the condition of people's lives,and it follow the tradition of Chekhov's profound spirit of comedy.

Abstract:Based on an examination survey of A. P. Chekhov's play The Cherry Orchard,this study systematically examines and analyzes,using "value alteration" as a reference frame,the discourse mode of the main characters' "value discourses" and the ways and means of dispelling these discourses. The author concludes that text effect of these factors——the inconsistency between expressed value and expected value——is prerequisite to comic composition. That is Chekhov' s discourse strategy to construct a comedy.

Abstract:Chekhov achieves the maturity of his plays by making them static, an artistic expression unique of Chekhov. The static quality of his plays is exhibited in his characters' incapability of taking action, the ineffective verbal communication and the staging set off by a lyrical atmosphere. By making the play static, Chekhov emphasizes less the external conflict between the characters, but more the conflict between man and his environment or that between man and time, which are taken as the essence of Chekhov's static play. The static play indicates Chekhov's deep concern over man's absurd living condition, under which man can not find the meaning of his action with the passage of time. Consequently waiting becomes the theme of the play. As a matter of fact, the static play has become the trend of drama since the end of the 19th century, and Chekhov goes with the trend and therefore exerts his influence over the 20th century drama. The Theatre of the Absurd has succeeded the static quality of Chekhov's drama by taking it to extremes. Similarly, Chinese playwrights also learn from Chekhov's unique achievement in their own exploration of artistic expression. Chekhov thus deserves the respect of the world for his contribution to the 20th century.

Abstract:With Chinese literature once being put in its wake,Russian-Soviet literature has no longer been well recepted among Chinese readers since 1980s,thus being without any further influence on Chinese literature.Social changes account to a greater extent for this situation,and yet it is quite unfortunate for today’s writers to lose a valuable spiritual legacy.It is clear that Russian-Soviet literature was irrationally recepted as the best in the world among most Chinese readers in 1950sand 1960s.With this enthusiastic misread and blindly adoration,a distorted tradition of Rusian-Soviet literature was presented to the readers in this country.The cold shoulder given to the Russian-Soviet literature now in China must result from all the crazziness in the past.To present RussianSoviet literature,as it is,with its true artistic value is prerequired to bring Russian-Soviet literature back to the Chinese readers.

Abstract:The article examines the influence of images, in particular, of a fox, from the works Liao Zhai’s Stories about the Extraordinary by Pu Songlin and Notes on the Search for Spirits by Gan Bao on modern Russian prose. The research material was the collections of Pu Songlin Liao Zhai’s Stories about the Extraordinary and Gan Bao Notes on the Search for Spirits in Russian translations. The study uses an interpretation technique involving reliance on contexts, methods of comparative and comparative analysis, and a phenomenological approach. The article presents an overview of the century-old history of translations of Pu Songlin’s novellas and Gan Bao’s stories into Russian. Based on the works by V. Pelevin, A. Nikolashina, M. Uspensky, the degree of influence of images from Chinese classical literature on Russian prose is determined. Most often, the image of werewolf foxes is borrowed, which is endowed in the recipient texts with recognizable qualities from the source – beauty, wisdom, passion, devotion, independence. At the same time, such heroines undergo personal changes during the development of the plot, as, for example, in the novel by V. Pelevin, without remaining in the static canonical framework. The poor monk in the story by M. Uspensky also possesses "magical" abilities and knowledge in Eastern philosophy. The very atmosphere of the "magical", "strange" as a special technique allows writers to highlight topical issues of our time in a special language. The results of this study reflect the process of adaptation of Chinese "strange stories" in Russian literature, first as original works in translation, then as donor texts for Russian writers. The methodological approach used in the work can be applied to further study the reception of Pu Songlin’s and Gan Bao’s creativity in Russian literature, as well as the influence and adaptation of other works of Chinese classics.

Abstract:The article is based on the material of the first major prose work of A. P. Chekhov — his “newspaper” detective novel “Drama on the Hunt” (1884–1885). The novel is a parody stylization not only for Western European and Russian detective literature of that time, but also for Russian literary classics. One of the objects of this stylization is the dramaturgic works of A. N. Ostrovsky. The article contains an analysis of specific textual representations of Chekhov’s stylization of Ostrovsky’s most famous plays, such as “Without a Dowry” and partly “The Thunderstorm.” The main character of the “Drama on the Hunt,” Sergei Kamyshev, can be discerned as a hybrid based on the features, on the one hand, of the hero of Dostoevsky’s novel “Demons” by Nikolai Stavrogin (and partly Rodion Raskolnikov from “Crime and Punishment”), and on the other hand, the character of “Without a Dowry” — Sergei Paratov. The main heroine of Chekhov’s novel, Olga, is primarily correlated with the heroine of “Without a Dowry” Larisa. Thus, the article examines the correlation of elements of parody and stylization in these images and in Chekhov’s novel in general, as well as the place held by Ostrovsky’s plays and some other works of Russian classical literature in the intertextual sphere of “Drama on the Hunt.”
Russian literary criticism of the 20th century on Moliere’s comedy “The Misanthrope”

Abstract:The article addresses the reception of J.-B. Moliere’s comedy “The Misanthrope” (1666) by the Russian literary critics of the 20th century, reflected in monographs, academic publications, textbook, articles and the scientific apparatus to the complete works of the great French playwright. The reason of this persistent interest to this play is determined by two essential factors: its ambiguity and its influence on A. S. Griboyedov’s comedy “Woe from Wit”. The author of the article traces the transformation of the researchers’ evaluations, ranging from the pre-revolutionary period and up to the latest reviews. It is stated that the reception of “The Misanthrope” can be generally traced back to the ideas of A. N. Veselovsky, the founder of the Russian studies of Moliere. Having been perceived controversially by the closest followers of the scientist, they became ideological in the works of the Soviet researchers of the 1930–1940s, then they were in the focus of attention of the literary critics of the middle of the century and were further developed in the studies of the turn of the 20th – 21st centuries. Addressing “The Misanthrope”, the Russian researchers of the French literature of the 17th century focus on the distinguishing features of the comic, on the biographical basis of the play, on the system of images, prototypes of the main character and the essence of his conflict with the society. They invariably concentrate on the issue of the author’s viewpoint, and on the question of who Moliere sides with – Alceste or Philinte. The carried-out analysis shows that the research thought has changed from the biographical, social and political interpretation of the comedy “The Misanthrope” to refocusing on ethical issues. It appears that, despite the importance of all of these aspects, clearly significant for the comprehension of the play, a cultural studies approach, characteristic for the French literary studies and based on the most recent studies of the gallant epoch, will facilitate a more sensible perception of the play.

Abstract:This article tells about the influence of the poetics of Ivan Turgenev's works on the features of early Anton Chekhov’s drama – the student play “Platonov” (1880–1881), “Ivanov” (edited in 1888–1889) and “The Wood Demon” (1888–1889). The author studies in detail the degree of Chekhov's familiarity with the body of Turgenev's dramatic texts. The author reveals the unity of the chronotope of the noble nest, distant plot similarities (self-serving motivations of actions), and the thematic motif of self-condemnation of the characters. It is shown that in Chekhov's plays there are characters typologically close to Turgenev (Superfluous Man, Hamlet, Don Quixote, “Turgenev's girl”, sponger), and there are also such elements of the poetics of Turgenev's drama as monologue, the reception of interruptions, micro-plots. The article draws attention to the fact that Chekhov was the successor of the dramatic tradition established in Turgenev's work, and developed, rather than making direct borrowings. Thus was the nature of Chekhov's creative work, focused on a dialogue with the Turgenev heritage.

На примере анализа пьесы Цао Юя «Гроза» доказаны особые функции побочного текста драматического произведения: расширенные авторские характеристики, предваряющие появление героев, призваны создать глубокие психологические портреты действующих лиц. The article examines the problem of genre transformation in Chinese drama of the first half of the XX century, identifies the features of the remarks and auxiliary author’s speech in creating a new conversational drama in China. On the example of the analysis of Cao Yu’s play «The Thunderstorm», the special functions of the dramatic work side text are proved: the expanded author’s descriptions, preceding the appearance of the heroes, are designed to create deeper psychological portraits of the characters.

Abstract:The writer-reader relationship in drama, with stage directions as part of the dramatic language, is much more complicated than that in other types of literature. The complication mainly comes from the fact that 'the reader' is a kind of collective term covering various types of individuals with different pragmatic roles, including the director, the stage producer, the setting designer, actors/actresses, the audience outside the theatre and ordinary readers. Thus, instead of a one-to-one process of communication between the writer and the reader, there are multiple parallel processes between the writer and various types of readers, with the same play text conveying different pragmatic meanings to different addressees. For instance, a play text is utilitarian in the theatrical circle but fictional in the literary circle, and what is imperative for one type of reader is purely descriptive and narrative for another. For various reasons, this area has so far received little critical attention. This article, from a pragmatic-stylistic perspective and with special reference to Eugène Ionesco's The Lesson, attempts to examine how the playwright's discourse strategies produce different effects on different types of readers.

Abstract:Chekhov’s literary career began with humorous short stories and vaudevilles. In his early creation, humor is evident. Explicit humor became a significant symbol of Chekhov’s early works. After entering the mature period of creation, the humor in Chekhov’s creation changed from the explicit humor to the introverted humor. This reflects the deepening and sublimation of Chekhov’s comic spirit. The restrained humor reflects Chekhov’s grim comic spirit. Chekhov realized a cold and solemn observation of the reality of life by virtue of this internal comic spirit. This cold comedy spirit has become the most essential aspect of Chekhov’s influence on modern novels and dramas in the 20 th century.
