Abstract:Objective To assess the prevalence and associated risk factors for retinopathy in newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes populations. We wanted to know whether it is necessary to screen for diabetic retinopathy in newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes populations. Methods Non-mydriatic digital photograph was taken of each eye in 400 people. And we surveyed patients to obtain information about glucose condition. Results There was 16 cases with nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy. The prevalence of diabetic retinopathy was 5.4% in newly diagnosed diabetes, 3.7% in IGT, 6.9% in IFG, and no retinopathy in people with normal glucose tolerance. Conclusion The prevalence of diabetic retinopathy in newly diagnosed diabetes and pre-diabetes populations is relatively low. It is unknown whether it has clinical and economic benefit or not for newly diagnosed diabetes and pre-diabetes populations to routinely screen retinopathy in early phase.
