Abstract:Based on National Instruments LabVIEW 2009, a network-edition virtual laboratory for digital signal processing (DSP) has been developed. Which is composed of three functional modules, that is, virtual experiment table, information management, and network communication. Hereinto, virtual experiment table is composed of two sub-modules, i.e. resource & document and simulation experiment; information management module is composed of four sub-modules, i.e. database, user registration, security verification and system management; network communication module is implemented by LabVIEW Web Server. The DSP Virtual Laboratory is suit for experimental teaching of a range of subjects, such as Digital Signal Processing, Signals & Systems, etc. And the designed virtual laboratory can provide users with a remote virtual experimental platform without time and space constraints.

Abstract:In order to investigate the effect of deep brain stimulation on diseases such as epilepsy, we developed a closed-loop electrical stimulation system using LabVIEW virtual instrument environment and NI data acquisition card. The system was used to detect electrical signals of epileptic seizures automatically and to generate electrical stimuli. We designed a novel automatic detection algorithm of epileptic seizures by combining three features of field potentials: the amplitude, slope and coastline index. Experimental results of rat epileptic model in the hippocampal region showed that the system was able to detect epileptic seizures with an accuracy rate 91.3% and false rate 8.0%. Furthermore, the on-line high frequency electrical stimuli showed a suppression effect on seizures. In addition, the system was adaptive and flexible with multiple work modes, such as automatic and manual modes. Moreover, the simple time-domain algorithm of seizure detection guaranteed the real-time feature of the system and provided an easy-to-use equipment for the experiment researches of epilepsy control by electrical stimulation.

Abstract:This paper employed a DSP platform to create the real-time and portable image processing system, and introduced a series of commonly used algorithms for visual prostheses. The results of performance evaluation revealed that this platform could afford image processing algorithms to be executed in real time.

Abstract:Simulations of artificial vision suggest that thousands of electrodes may be required to restore vision for ones with diseases of the outer retina. With the development of MEMS fabrication process for the stimulation electrode array, extraocular image processing is becoming more and more important for the retinal prosthesis systems. A Digital Signal Processor (DSP) based extraocular image processing system (EIPS) for a retinal prosthesis has been developed in this paper. The system mainly consists of a CMOS image sensor and a DSP processing system, which provides the capability of implmenting the real-time image processing with low power consumption. Furthermore, this system offers the flexibility of realizing various image processing algorithms with different specification requirements on the DSP by programming, such as different frame rate, resolution and throughput data rate. The related image processing algorithms include the image resizing, color erasing, edge enhancement and edge detection. Finally, the speed of different DSPs in the market has been evaluated and compared for achieving better performance. © 2009 IEEE.

Abstract:Visual prostheses for extreme vision impairment have come closer to reality during these few years. The task of this research has been to design exoteric devices and study image processing algorithms and methods for different complexity images. We have developed a real-time system capable of image capture and processing to obtain most available and important image features for recognition and simulation experiment based on DSP (Digital Signal Processor). Beyond developing hardware system, we introduce algorithms such as resolution reduction, information extraction, dilation & erosion, square (circular) pixelization and Gaussian pixelization. And we classify images with different stages according to different complexity such as simple images, medium complex images, complex images. As a result, this paper will get the needed signal for transmitting to electrode array and images for simulation experiment. © 2009 SPIE.

Abstract:With the development of the computer technology and digital signal processing technology, virtual technology has become popular. Application of virtual technology in control domain is called virtual device. To verify the effect of the controller, on the basis of system model, the virtual device with approximate input-output characteristics is employed for the system's real-time simulation, achieving the aim of reducing on-spot debugging, enhancing controller's security and improving effect. This paper presents hardware and software designs of a virtual device using DSP chip-TMS320F240, TI Com. and verifies the simulation effect of virtual device through application example.

Abstract:Objective To design a portable electroencephalography(EEG) acquisition system to acquire and analysis steady-state visual potentials (SSVEP). Methods The microprocessor MSP432P401 series MCU was used to control the high-performance integrated analog front end ADS1299 to realize the acquisition, amplification and analog-to-digital (AD) conversion of EEG signals. The digital EEG signal is sent to the host computer for processing by WIFI. Spontaneous EEG signals and steady-state visually evoked EEG signals from 3 healthy subjects were collected to verify system performance. Results The collected signal had a clear α-wave rhythm of closed-eye spontaneous EEG signals. The power spectrum density shows that the steady-state visually induced EEG signal frequency and harmonic frequency peak at the corresponding stimulation frequency, indicating that the system works normally and the performance is good. Conclusions The designed portable EEG acquisition system can accurately collect the spontaneous and induced EEG signals of the human body, which provides technical support for the clinical application of SSVEP technology.

Abstract:This paper presents a multi-channel neural signal acquisition system based on PCI and DSP. The system utilizes CPLD to realize logical and timing control between DSP and multi-channel ADC. The interface between DSP's HPI and PCI bus is employed to achieve high-speed data transmission. This paper also introduces the technique of PCI device driver programming based on WDM using DriverStudio in Windows 2000. Finally, the experimental result of acquiring rat EEG signal using this system is given.

Abstract:A portable multi-channel telemetry system which can be used for brain stimulation and neuronal activity recording in freely behaving small animals is described here. This system consists of three major components of headstage, backpack and portable Personal Digital Assistant (PDA). The headstage contains high precision instrument amplifiers with high input impedance. The backpack is comprised of two parts: (1) a main board (size: 36 mm × 22 mm × 3.5 mm and weight: 40 g with batteries, 20 g without), with current/voltage stimulator and special circuit suitable for neuronal activity recording and (2) and a bluetooth transceiver, with a high data transmission rate up to 70 kb/s, suitable for downloading stimulation commands and uploading acquired data. We recorded neuronal activities of the primary motor area of a freely behaving rat with 12-bit resolution at 12 k samples/s. The recorded data and analysis results showed that the system was successful by comparing with the commercial equipment Cerebus™ 128-Channel Data Acquisition System (Cyberkinetics Inc.). Using the PDA, we can control stimulation and recording. It provides a flexible method to do some research work in the circumstances where other approaches would be difficult or impossible.

Abstract:This paper introduces an 16-lead digital EEG signal acquisition system, which applies MCU MSP430 as central control unit with high performance analog devices and high speed multi-channel, multi-bit analog-to-digital converter as peripheral to retrench analog circuit. Data is transferred to PC by USART interface. Software on PC based on virtual instrument technology realizes real-time detection, display and storage. The system has many advantages such as high precision, stable performance, small volume and low power dissipation, thus provides a new means for digital EEG signal acquisition.

Abstract:Background: Commercial electrophysiology systems for recording evoked potentials always connect patients to the acquisition unit via long wires. Wires guarantee timely transfer of signals for synchronization with the stimuli, but they are susceptible to electromagnetic and electrostatic interferences. Though wireless solutions are readily available (e.g. Bluetooth), they introduce high delay variability that will distort the evoked potential traces. We developed a complete wireless acquisition system with a fixed delay. Methods: The system supports up to 4 bipolar channels; each is amplified by 20,000× and digitized to 24 bits. The system incorporates the "driven-right-leg" circuit to lower the common noise. Data are continuously streamed using radio-frequency transmission operating at 915 MHz and then tagged with the stimulus SYNC signal at the receiver. The delay, noise level and transmission error rate were measured. Flash visual evoked potentials were recorded monocularly from both eyes of six adults with normal vision. The signals were acquired via wireless and wired transmissions simultaneously. The recording was repeated on some participants within 2 weeks. Results: The delay was constant at 20 ms. The system noise was white and Gaussian (2 microvolts RMS). The transmission error rate was about one per million packets. The VEPs recorded with wireless transmission were consistent with those with wired transmission. The VEP amplitudes and shapes showed good intra-session and inter-session reproducibility and were consistent across eyes. Conclusions: The wireless acquisition system can reliably record visual evoked potentials. It has a constant delay of 20 ms and very low error rate.

Abstract:Electrical stimulation of optic nerve with penetrating electrode array for visual prosthesis has been brought forward by our group recently. As a first step to study visual resolution with this visual prosthesis approach, several electrical stimulations of different spatial-temporal patterns were used to investigate the diversity of electrical evoked potentials (EEPs) recorded in the visual cortex. Different EEPs were recorded by different spatial-temporal stimulation patterns, which implies moderate resolution of this optic nerve visual prosthesis.

Abstract:Amblyopia is a common visual related eye disease in childhood. Although traditional treatment to amblyopia is effective, there are still some disadvantages, such as poor compliance, easily leading to the healthy eyesight problem, the poor recovery of binocular and stereoscopy vision, the lack of objective parameter guidance, etc. Therefore, a new personalized amblyopia treatment solution is put forward to solve these problems combined with Pattern Visual Evoked Potential (P_VEP). A complete software system is built, including diagnosis module, treatment module, data management module and expert module. The EEG data acquisition and synchronized trigger circuit are designed using ADS 1299 EEG Front-End and 10 data collecting card to collect the raw EEG signal. Digital filtering algorithm, average superposition algorithm and wavelet algorithm are used to extract P_VEP from the raw EEG data acquired by the hardware circuit. The latency and peak of P_VEP wave is measured. The best spatial frequency is searched and obtained from the treatment training curve. It is updated automatically as treatment continues.

Abstract:Retinal prosthesis provides a promising solution for retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and aged-related macular degeneration (AMD), which are the two major retinal degenerative diseases that cause a loss of vision. Clinical trials reported different irregular characteristics of phosphene map elicited by retinal prosthesis including irregular shaped phosphene, distorted phosphene array and dropout phenomenon. Psychological experiments under simulated prosthetic vision can be carried out to evaluate the ability of performing daily activities for prosthesis wearers. A prosthetic vision simulating system for retinal prosthesis is established based on a digital signal processor (DSP) TMS320DM642. In this system, external images captured by a microcamera are processed on the DSP and the simulation results are presented in a head-mounted display (HMD) after several image processing steps. Mathematic models are used to create phosphene maps with irregular characteristics including irregular shaped phosphene, distortion and dropout. This system can achieve a processing speed of 24 frames per second which can meet the requirement of the real-time processing. The portability and the real-time processing ability allow extensive psychological experiments to be conducted based on this system.
An improved multi-channel cortical recording and stimulation system

Abstract:Rolston et al. (2009) [1] designed an easy-to-use, modifiable, and inexpensive system for multi-electrode neural recording and closed-loop stimulation. The system can recover rapidly from stimulation artifacts and allow short-latency action potentials (<1 ms post-stimulus) to be detected. This system, however, uses a desktop computer to perform system control and data analysis. Thus, its channel capacity cannot be expanded, and there will be a relatively long delay in closed-loop stimulation due to data flowing in and out of the desktop computer CPU. To improve the performance of the system, we propose to implement a hardware realization for some of its software functions. Our implementation uses a digital signal processor (DSP) to deal with system control and data analysis, but utilizes the similar analog circuitry to perform signal amplification and filtering. A desktop computer is used only for data visualization and storage. Our implementation can be modularized with modular expandability. The estimated cost of a 16-channel module is less than US $ 1,500.

Abstract:Low-frequency steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs) are used as the input signal in the present SSVEP-based brain-computer interface (BCI). This prototype system has a high information transfer rate. On the other hand, it has some limitations including visual fatigue, false positive, and some possibility of causing a seizure. These drawbacks can be largely eliminated when using high-frequency stimulations. In this paper, we study the amplitude versus stimulation frequency response of SSVEPs. The signal-to-noise ratio versus frequency curve suggests that the high-frequency SSVEP (>20Hz) could help to construct a practical BCI system.

Abstract:The research of brain computer interface (BCI) has important theoretical significance and wide application prospect. The BCI system based on Steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEP) has the advantages of noninvasive signal recording, little training required for users, high information transfer rate(ITR), and ease of use. However, most of the applications based on SSVEP-based BCI are synchronous. One of the important factors is the limitation of visual stimulators. In this paper, a new low-cost stimulator flashing with accurate frequency output was designed. By this way, the computer monitor can be used as a feedback interface for the online system. The stimulator consists of LED stimulation panel derived by FPGA chip. Experiments with ten subjects were performed, and the results demonstrate that the stimulus frequency generated using the proposed scheme was accurate, and the developed SSVEP-based brain computer interface is feasible for use.
