Abstract:We study a one-dimensional lattice of anharmonic oscillators with only quartic nearest-neighbor interactions, in which discrete breathers (DB's) can be explicitly constructed by an exact separation of their time and space dependence. Introducing parametric periodic driving, we first show how a variety of such DB's can be obtained by selecting spatial profiles from the homoclinic orbits of an invertible map and combining them with initial conditions chosen from the Poincaré surface of section of a simple Duffing's equation. Placing then our initial conditions at the center of the islands of a major resonance, we demonstrate how the corresponding DB can be stabilized by varying the amplitude of the driving. We thus discover around elliptic points a large region of quasiperiodic breathers, which are stable for very long times. Starting with initial conditions close to the elliptic point at the origin, we find that as we approach the main chaotic layer, a quasiperiodic breather either destabilizes by delocalization or turns into a chaotic breather, with an evidently broadbanded Fourier spectrum before it collapses. For some breather profiles stable quasiperiodic breathers exist all the way to the separatrix of the Duffing equation, indicating the presence of large regions of tori around the DB solution in the multidimensional phase space. We argue that these strong localization phenomena are due to the absence of phonon resonances, as there are no linear dispersion terms in our lattices. We also show, however, that these phenomena persist in more realistic physical models, in which weak linear dispersion is included in the equations of motion, with a sufficiently small coefficient.

Abstract:: By developing a KAM theorem which involves an infinitely multiple normal frequency, it is shown that there are plenty of breathers, quasi-periodic in time and super-exponentially localized in space, for the networks of weakly coupled oscillators. Abstract:We prove the existence of a class of time-localized and space-periodic breathers (called q-gap breathers) in nonlinear lattices with time-periodic coefficients. These q-gap breathers are the counterparts to the classical space-localized and time-periodic breathers found in space-periodic systems. Using normal form transformations, we establish rigorously the existence of such solutions with oscillating tails (in the time domain) that can be made arbitrarily small, but finite. Due to the presence of the oscillating tails, these solutions are coined generalized q-gap breathers. Using a multiple-scale analysis, we also derive a tractable amplitude equation that describes the dynamics of breathers in the limit of small amplitude. In the presence of damping, we demonstrate the existence of transition fronts that connect the trivial state to the time-periodic ones. The analytical results are corroborated by systematic numerical simulations.

Abstract:We prove the most general theorem about spectral stability of multi-site breathers in the discrete Klein-Gordon equation with a small coupling constant. In the anti-continuum limit, multi-site breathers represent excited oscillations at different sites of the lattice separated by a number of "holes" (sites at rest). The theorem describes how the stability or instability of a multi-site breather depends on the phase difference and distance between the excited oscillators. Previously, only multi-site breathers with adjacent excited sites were considered within the first-order perturbation theory. We show that the stability of multi-site breathers with one-site holes change for large-amplitude oscillations in soft nonlinear potentials. We also discover and study a symmetry-breaking (pitchfork) bifurcation of one-site and multi-site breathers in soft quartic potentials near the points of 1:3 resonance.

Stability of Breathers for a Periodic Klein-Gordon Equation

Abstract:The existence of breather type solutions, i.e., periodic in time, exponentially localized in space solutions, is a very unusual feature for continuum, nonlinear wave type equations. Following an earlier work [Comm. Math. Phys. {\bf 302}, 815-841 (2011)], establishing a theorem for the existence of such structures, we bring to bear a combination of analysis-inspired numerical tools that permit the construction of such wave forms to a desired numerical accuracy. In addition, this enables us to explore their numerical stability. Our computations show that for the spatially heterogeneous form of the $\phi^4$ model considered herein, the breather solutions are generically found to be unstable. Their instability seems to generically favor the motion of the relevant structures. We expect that these results may inspire further studies towards the identification of stable continuous breathers in spatially-heterogeneous, continuum nonlinear wave equation models.

Abstract:A quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate loaded into a quasi-periodic potential created by two sub-lattices of comparable amplitudes and incommensurate periods is considered. Although the conventional tight-binding approximation is not applicable in this setting, the description can still be reduced to a discrete model that accounts for the modes below the mobility edge. In the respective discrete lattice, where no linear hopping exists, solutions and their dynamics are governed solely by nonlinear interactions. Families of nonlinear modes, including those with no linear limit, are described with a special focus on dimers, which correspond to breather solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a quasi-periodic potential. The breathers are found to be stable for negative scattering lengths. Localization and stable propagation of breathers are also observed for positive scattering lengths at relatively weak and moderate nonlinearities.

Abstract:We consider damped and forced discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations on the lattice Z . First we establish the existence of a global uniform attractor for the dissipative dynamics of the system. For strong dissipation we prove that the global uniform attractor has a finite fractal dimension and consists of a unique bounded trajectory that is confined to a finite-dimensional subspace of the infinite dimensional phase space, attracting any bounded set in phase space exponentially fast. Afterwards, we establish that for periodic, respectively, quasiperiodic forcing the unique solution is represented by a periodic, respectively, quasiperiodic breather. Notably, quasiperiodic breathers cannot exist in the system without damping and driving. Furthermore, the unique periodic (quasiperiodic) breather solution possesses a finite number of modes and is exponentially stable.

Abstract:Oscillons are localized field configurations oscillating in time with lifetimes orders of magnitude longer than their oscillation period. In this paper, we simulate non-travelling oscillons produced by deforming the breather solutions of the sine-Gordon model. Such a deformation treats the dimensionality of the model as a real parameter to produce spherically symmetric oscillons. After considering the post-transient oscillation frequency as a control parameter, we probe the initial parameter space to continuously connect breathers and oscillons at various dimensionalities. For sufficiently small dimensional deformations, we find that oscillons can be treated as perturbatively deformed breathers. In $D\gtrsim 2$ spatial dimensions, we observe solutions undergoing intermittent phases of contraction and expansion in their cores. Knowing that stable and unstable configurations can be mapped to disjoint regions of the breather parameter space, we find that amplitude modulated solutions are located in the middle of both stability regimes. These solutions display the dynamics of critical behavior around the stability limit.

Here we study an attractive fermionic Hubbard model with two kind of particles of opposite spin. Abstract:In this paper we consider a discrete Klein-Gordon (dKG) equation on $\ZZ^d$ in the limit of the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger (dNLS) equation, for which small-amplitude breathers have precise scaling with respect to the small coupling strength $\eps$. By using the classical Lyapunov-Schmidt method, we show existence and linear stability of the KG breather from existence and linear stability of the corresponding dNLS soliton. Nonlinear stability, for an exponentially long time scale of the order $\mathcal{O}(\exp(\eps^{-1}))$, is also obtained via the normal form technique, together with higher order approximations of the KG breather through perturbations of the corresponding dNLS soliton.

Abstract:We present analytical and numerical studies of the phase-coherent dynamics of intrinsically localized excitations (breathers) in a system of two weakly coupled nonlinear oscillator chains. We show that there are two qualitatively different dynamical regimes of the coupled breathers, either immovable or slowly moving: the periodic transverse translation (wandering) of the low-amplitude breather between the chains and the one-chain-localization of the high-amplitude breather. These two modes of coupled nonlinear excitations, which involve a large number of anharmonic oscillators, can be mapped onto two solutions of a single pendulum equation, detached by a separatrix mode. We also show that these two regimes of coupled phase-coherent breathers are similar and are described by a similar pair of equations to the two regimes in the nonlinear tunneling dynamics of two weakly linked interacting (nonideal) Bose-Einstein condensates. On the basis of this profound analogy, we predict a tunneling mode of two weakly coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in which their relative phase oscillates around pi/2 mod pi. We also show that the magnitude of the static displacements of the coupled chains with nonlinear localized excitation, induced by the cubic term in the intrachain anharmonic potential, scales approximately as the total vibrational energy of the excitation, either a one- or two-chain one, and does not depend on the interchain coupling. This feature is also valid for a narrow stripe of several parallel-coupled nonlinear chains. We also study two-chain breathers which can be considered as bound states of discrete breathers, with different symmetry and center locations in the coupled chains, and bifurcation of the antiphase two-chain breather into the one-chain one. Bound states of two breathers with different commensurate frequencies are found in the two-chain system. Merging of two breathers with different frequencies into one breather in two coupled chains is observed. Wandering of the low-amplitude breather in a system of several, up to five, coupled nonlinear chains is studied, and the dependence of the wandering period on the number of chains is analytically estimated and compared with numerical results. The delocalizing transition of a one-dimensional (1D) breather in the 2D system of a large number of parallel-coupled nonlinear oscillator chains is described, in which the breather, initially excited in a given chain, abruptly spreads its vibrational energy in the whole 2D system upon decreasing the breather frequency or amplitude below the threshold one. The threshold breather frequency is above the cutoff phonon frequency in the 2D system, and the threshold breather amplitude scales as the square root of the interchain coupling constant. The delocalizing transition of the discrete vibrational breather in 2D and 3D systems of parallel-coupled nonlinear oscillator chains has an analogy with the delocalizing transition for Bose-Einstein condensates in 2D and 3D optical lattices.

Abstract:We study collision processes of moving breathers with the same frequency, traveling with opposite directions within a Klein-Gordon chain of oscillators. Two types of collisions have been analyzed: symmetric and non-symmetric, head-on collisions. For low enough frequency the outcome is strongly dependent of the dynamical states of the two colliding breathers just before the collision. For symmetric collisions, several results can be observed: breather generation, with the formation of a trapped breather and two new moving breathers; breather reflection; generation of two new moving breathers; and breather fusion bringing about a trapped breather. For non-symmetric collisions the possible results are: breather generation, with the formation of three new moving breathers; breather fusion, originating a new moving breather; breather trapping with also breather reflection; generation of two new moving breathers; and two new moving breathers traveling as a ligand state. Breather annihilation has never been observed.

Abstract:In the present chapter, we explore the possibility of a Frenkel-Kontorova (discrete sine-Gordon) model to bear interactions that decay algebraically with space, inspired by the continuum limit of the corresponding fractional derivative. In such a setting, we revisit the realm of discrete breathers including onsite, intersite and out-of-phase ones and identify their power-law spatial decay, as well as explore their corresponding stability analysis, by means of Floquet multipliers. The relevant stability is also explored parametrically as a function of the frequency and connected to stability criteria for breather dependence of energy vs. frequency. Finally, by suitably perturbing the breathers, we also generate moving waveforms and explore their radiation and potential robustness.

Abstract:<p>We revisit the problem of transverse instability of a 2D breather stripe of the sine-Gordon (sG) equation. A numerically computed Floquet spectrum of the stripe is compared to analytical predictions developed by means of multiple-scale perturbation theory showing good agreement in the long-wavelength limit. By means of direct simulations, it is found that the instability leads to a breakup of the quasi-1D breather in a chain of interacting 2D radial breathers that appear to be fairly robust in the dynamics. The stability and dynamics of radial breathers in a finite domain are studied in detail by means of numerical methods. Different families of such solutions are identified. They develop small-amplitude spatially oscillating tails ("nanoptera") through a resonance of higher-order breather's harmonics with linear modes ("phonons") belonging to the continuous spectrum. These results demonstrate the ability of the 2D sG model within our finite domain computations to localize energy in long-lived, self-trapped breathing excitations.</p>

Abstract:We consider the discrete p-Schrödinger (DpS) equation, which approximates small amplitude oscillations in chains of oscillators with fully-nonlinear nearest-neighbors interactions of order $$\alpha = p - 1> 1$$. Using a mapping approach, we prove the existence of breather solutions of the DpS equation with even- or odd-parity reflectional symmetries. We derive in addition analytical approximations for the breather profiles and the corresponding intersecting stable and unstable manifolds, valid on a whole range of nonlinearity orders α. In the limit of weak nonlinearity (α → 1+), we introduce a continuum limit connecting the stationary DpS and logarithmic nonlinear Schrödinger equations. In this limit, breathers correspond asymptotically to Gaussian homoclinic solutions. We numerically analyze the stability properties of breather solutions depending on their even- or odd-parity symmetry. A perturbation of an unstable breather generally results in a translational motion (traveling breather) when α is close to unity, whereas pinning becomes predominant for larger values of α.

Abstract:Inspired by the experimental results of Cuevas et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 224101 (2009)], we consider theoretically the behavior of a chain of planar rigid pendulums suspended in a uniform gravitational field and subjected to a horizontal periodic driving force applied to the pendulum pivots. We characterize the motion of a single pendulum, finding bistability near the fundamental resonance and near the period-3 subharmonic resonance. We examine the development of modulational instability in a driven pendulum chain and find both a critical chain length and a critical frequency for the appearance of the instability. We study the breather solutions and show their connection to the single-pendulum dynamics and extend our analysis to consider multifrequency breathers connected to the period-3 periodic solution, showing also the possibility of stability in these breather states. Finally we examine the problem of breather generation and demonstrate a robust scheme for generation of on-site and off-site breathers.

Abstract:$q$-Breathers (QBs) represent a quintessential phenomenon of energy localization, manifesting as stable periodic orbits exponentially localized in normal mode space. Their existence can hinder the thermalization process in nonlinear lattices. In this study, we employ the Newton's method to identify QB solutions in the diatomic Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou chains and perform a comprehensive analysis of their linear stability. We derive an analytical expression for the instability thresholds of low-frequency QBs, which converges to the known results of monoatomic chains as the bandgap approaches zero. The expression reveals an inverse square relationship between instability thresholds and system size, as well as a quadratic dependence on the mass difference, both of which have been corroborated through extensive numerical simulations. Our results demonstrate that the presence of a bandgap can markedly enhance QB stability, providing a novel theoretical foundation and practical framework for controlling energy transport between modes in complex lattice systems. These results not only expand the applicability of QBs but also offer significant implications for understanding the thermalization dynamics in complex lattice structures, with wide potential applications in related low-dimensional materials.

Bifurcations of discrete breathers in a diatomic Fermi-Pasta-Ulam chain

Abstract:Discrete breathers are time-periodic, spatially localized solutions of the equations of motion for a system of classical degrees of freedom interacting on a lattice. Such solutions are investigated for a diatomic Fermi-Pasta-Ulam chain, i. e., a chain of alternate heavy and light masses coupled by anharmonic forces. For hard interaction potentials, discrete breathers in this model are known to exist either as ``optic breathers'' with frequencies above the optic band, or as ``acoustic breathers'' with frequencies in the gap between the acoustic and the optic band. In this paper, bifurcations between different types of discrete breathers are found numerically, with the mass ratio m and the breather frequency omega as bifurcation parameters. We identify a period tripling bifurcation around optic breathers, which leads to new breather solutions with frequencies in the gap, and a second local bifurcation around acoustic breathers. These results provide new breather solutions of the FPU system which interpolate between the classical acoustic and optic modes. The two bifurcation lines originate from a particular ``corner'' in parameter space (omega,m). As parameters lie near this corner, we prove by means of a center manifold reduction that small amplitude solutions can be described by a four-dimensional reversible map. This allows us to derive formally a continuum limit differential equation which characterizes at leading order the numerically observed bifurcations.

Abstract:We study time-periodic and spatially localised solutions (breathers) in general infinite conservative and dissipative nonlinear Klein–Gordon lattices. First, in the time-reversible (conservative) case, we give a concise proof of the existence of breathers not using the concept of the anticontinuous limit. The existence problem is converted into an operator equation for time-reversal initial conditions generating breather solutions. A nontrivial solution of this operator equation is established facilitating Schauder's fixed point theorem. Afterwards, we prove the existence and uniqueness of breather solutions in damped and forced infinite nonlinear Klein–Gordon lattice systems utilising the contraction mapping principle.
