Abstract:In this paper natural immune system and artificial immune system are described. Natural immune system is an example of evolutionary learning mechanism which possesses a content addressable memory and the ability to forget little-used information, it is highly complicated and appears to be precisely turned to the problem of detecting and eliminating infection. A novel information processing system inspired by immune system of human and other animals, the artificial immune system is introduced in this paper, AIS is a computational system designed on the principles of natural immune system, which is highly distributed, adaptive and diverse system. AIS research, being interdisciplinary, demands significant knowledge of immunology and computational science. Due to the different in the nature of two fields, researchers in either field face difficulties in having mutual understanding and effectively contributing for AIS research. The paper reviews the mechanism of immune system, the basis of artificial immune system, its development history, content of research and Immune Engineering which is applied in processing control. And a major method of AIS is described, so that it explains to how to set up artificial immune network and system models. The AIS is an example of a system developed around the current understanding of the immune system. It has proved artificial immune system can capture the basic elements of the immune system and exhibit some of its chief characteristics. Through this paper, we know it is more suitable than simulated annealing and genetic algorithms for solving problem. At last, the disadvantage of AIS and the development tendency are discussed.

Abstract:The immune response was the main function of the immune system to protect the organism avoid the damage of antigens intrusion. An artificial immune algorithm, which based on the immune response mechanism, was proposed in this paper. It adopts the kernel function to compute the affinity between antibody and antigen. The knowledge was acquired by the process of antibody mutation. The learning process was unsupervised. The optimization results indicated that it has shown fascinating characteristic of self-learning, self-adaptive and self-stability.

Abstract:The human immune system has numerous properties that make it ripe for exploitation in the computational domain, such as robustness and fault tolerance, and many different algorithms, collectively termed Artificial Immune Systems (AIS), have been inspired by it. Two generations of AIS are currently in use, with the first generation relying on simplified immune models and the second generation utilising interdisciplinary collaboration to develop a deeper understanding of the immune system and hence produce more complex models. Both generations of algorithms have been successfully applied to a variety of problems, including anomaly detection, pattern recognition, optimisation and robotics. In this chapter an overview of AIS is presented, its evolution is discussed, and it is shown that the diversification of the field is linked to the diversity of the immune system itself, leading to a number of algorithms as opposed to one archetypal system. Two case studies are also presented to help provide insight into the mechanisms of AIS; these are the idiotypic network approach and the Dendritic Cell Algorithm.

Abstract:The biological immune system is a robust, complex, adaptive system that defends the body from foreign pathogens. It is able to categorize all cells (or molecules) within the body as self or non-self substances. It does this with the help of a distributed task force that has the intelligence to take action from a local and also a global perspective using its network of chemical messengers for communication. There are two major branches of the immune system. The innate immune system is an unchanging mechanism that detects and destroys certain invading organisms, whilst the adaptive immune system responds to previously unknown foreign cells and builds a response to them that can remain in the body over a long period of time. This remarkable information processing biological system has caught the attention of computer science in recent years. A novel computational intelligence technique, inspired by immunology, has emerged, called Artificial Immune Systems. Several concepts from the immune system have been extracted and applied for solution to real world science and engineering problems. In this tutorial, we briefly describe the immune system metaphors that are relevant to existing Artificial Immune Systems methods. We will then show illustrative real-world problems suitable for Artificial Immune Systems and give a step-by-step algorithm walkthrough for one such problem. A comparison of the Artificial Immune Systems to other well-known algorithms, areas for future work, tips & tricks and a list of resources will round this tutorial off. It should be noted that as Artificial Immune Systems is still a young and evolving field, there is not yet a fixed algorithm template and hence actual implementations might differ somewhat from time to time and from those examples given here.

Abstract:Artificial immune systems (AISs) to date have generally been inspired by naive biological metaphors. This has limited the effectiveness of these systems. In this position paper two ways in which AISs could be made more biologically realistic are discussed. We propose that AISs should draw their inspiration from organisms which possess only innate immune systems, and that AISs should employ systemic models of the immune system to structure their overall design. An outline of plant and invertebrate immune systems is presented, and a number of contemporary research that more biologically-realistic AISs could have is also discussed.

A Novel Immune Algorithm for Complex Optimization Problems

Abstract:A novel artificial immune algorithm using a self-pattern-recognition technique in vaccine extraction procedure is proposed for solving complex optimization problems. It takes objectives and constraints of an optimization problem as antigens, feasible solution of the problem as an antibody, and characteristic knowledge utilization as vaccine inoculation. By automatic recognition of the patterns in effective antibodies at each cultivation period, this algorithm boosts or restricts the generation of new antibodies in order to find the optimal solution more efficiently. Simulation study is conducted on the optimization of a series of benchmark problems in comparison with some other ecological algorithms- and colony algorithm and genetic algorithm. The statistical analysis results demonstrate that the algorithm proposed in this paper has better computation precision and searching efficiency in solving strong nonlinear optimization problems.

Abstract:A new artificial immune algorithm (AIA) simulating the biological immune network system with selfadjustment function is proposed in this paper. Computational amount and effect are a pair of contradictions. For this problem, a method regulating the parameters easily attains a compromise between them. The method can control the antibody diversity and their evolutionarysearch processes by utilizing the basic properties of the immune network in order to prevent premature convergence. Simulation illustrates that AIA is adapted to solve optimization problems, emphasizing multimodal optimization.

Abstract:Immune algorithm has become a hotspot in the area of computational intelligence. We proposed an immune algorithm based on immune recognition(IAIR) .The design of IAIR was inspired by the negative selection mechanism in the biological immune system and its idea was different with current optimization methods in that it got the good solution by excluding bad solutions. This paper introduced in detail the design of IAIR, analyzed its ability and time complexity. We also designed experiments to solve the TSP problem.The theoretical analysis and experimental results showed that IAIR had a good ability of problem solving.

Abstract:The use of artificial immune systems in intrusion detection is an appealing concept for two reasons. Firstly, the human immune system provides the human body with a high level of protection from invading pathogens, in a robust, self-organised and distributed manner. Secondly, current techniques used in computer security are not able to cope with the dynamic and increasingly complex nature of computer systems and their security. It is hoped that biologically inspired approaches in this area, including the use of immune-based systems will be able to meet this challenge. Here we collate the algorithms used, the development of the systems and the outcome of their implementation. It provides an introduction and review of the key developments within this field, in addition to making suggestions for future research.

Abstract:Artificial immune systems primarily mimic the adaptive nature of biological immune functions. Their ability to adapt to varying pathogens makes such systems a suitable choice for various robotic applications. Generally, AIS-based robotic applications map local instantaneous sensory information into either an antigen or a co-stimulatory signal, according to the choice of representation schema. Algorithms then use relevant immune functions to output either evolved antibodies or maturity of dendritic cells, in terms of actuation signals. It is observed that researchers, in an attempt to solve the problem in hand, do not try to replicate the biological immunity but select necessary immune functions instead, resulting in an ad-hoc manner these applications are reported. Authors, therefore, present a comprehensive review of immuno-inspired robotic applications in an attempt to categorize them according to underlying immune definitions. Implementation details are tabulated in terms of corresponding mathematical expressions and their representation schema that include binary, real or hybrid data. Limitations of reported applications are also identified in light of modern immunological interpretations. As a result of this study, authors suggest a renewed focus on innate immunity and also emphasize that immunological representations should benefit from robot embodiment and must be extended to include modern trends.

Within the recently years, a bio-inspired artificial immune system (AIS) has been widely investigated in many areas. Immunological approaches are currently used for computer security, virus protection, anomaly detection, process monitoring, robot control, and fault tolerance. This paper will discuss its potential applications in data acquisition system. Principles and applications of the state-of-the-art artificial immune system is reviewed. Then a multi-layered infrastructure of an network-attached data acquisition system is proposed and discussed in detail.

Abstract:A new artificial immune algorithm (AIA) simulating the biological immune network system with self-adjustment function is proposed in this paper. AIA is based on the modified immune network model in which two methods of affinity measure evaluated are used, controlling the antibody diversity and the speed of convergence separately. The model proposed focuses on a systemic view of the immune system and takes into account cell-cell interactions denoted by antibody affinity. The antibody concentration defined in the immune network model is responsible directly for its activity in the immune system. The model introduces not only a term describing the network dynamics, but also proposes an independent term to simulate the dynamics of the antigen population. The antibodies’ evolutionary processes are controlled in the algorithms by utilizing the basic properties of the immune network. Computational amount and effect is a pair of contradictions. In terms of this problem, the AIA regulating the parameters easily attains a compromise between them. At the same time, AIA can prevent premature convergence at the cost of a heavy computational amount (the iterative times). Simulation illustrates that AIA is adapted to solve optimization problems, emphasizing multimodal optimization.

Abstract:A novel artificial immune algorithm based on the clonal selection principle was proposed.This general search algorithm was based on the adaptive immune recognition mechanism,combining affinity maturation,negative selection,immune memory,gene library evolution and meta-dynamics and other key factors in the course of clonal selection.It can automatically extract and accumulate related knowledge of the search space,and regulate the population memory and gene-library memory,and efficiently solve the question with limited resource.The global convergence of the algorithm was analyzed,and experiments on STSP problems were conducted to test the performance of this algorithm.

Abstract:The immune system is a complex biological system with a highly distributed, adaptive and self-organising nature. This paper presents an artificial immune system (AIS) that exploits some of these characteristics and is applied to the task of film recommendation by collaborative filtering (CF). Natural evolution and in particular the immune system have not been designed for classical optimisation. However, for this problem, we are not interested in finding a single optimum. Rather we intend to identify a sub-set of good matches on which recommendations can be based. It is our hypothesis that an AIS built on two central aspects of the biological immune system will be an ideal candidate to achieve this: Antigen - antibody interaction for matching and antibody - antibody interaction for diversity. Computational results are presented in support of this conjecture and compared to those found by other CF techniques. Abstract:This paper puts forward a novel artificial immune response algorithm for optimal approximation of linear systems. A quaternion model of artificial immune response is proposed for engineering computing. The model abstracts four elements, namely, antigen, antibody, reaction rules among antibodies, and driving algorithm describing how the rules are applied to antibodies, to simulate the process of immune response. Some reaction rules including clonal selection rules, immunological memory rules and immune regulation rules are introduced. Using the theorem of Markov chain, it is proofed that the new model is convergent. The experimental study on the optimal approximation of a stable linear system and an unstable one show that the approximate models searched by the new model have better performance indices than those obtained by some existing algorithms including the differential evolution algorithm and the multi-agent genetic algorithm.

Abstract:Current network intrusion detection systems are of low intelligence level and have the main deficiency as being unable to detect new intrusive behaviors of unknown signatures.The protection mechanism of natural immune system has brought us inspirations to design a novel network intrusion detection system. The research on modeling a NIDS with natural immune system just started, including the negative selection algorithm proposed by S. Forrest and the basic system model proposed by J. Kim. Based on their works, this paper proposed a novel system structure including affinity mutation, which was used to improve the performance of anomaly detection, and established an basic system based on artificial immunology. This paper stressed on the novel construction and testing experiments. Result of the experiments proved that the application of the protection mechanism of natural immune system to network intrusion detection system has an exciting perspective.
