Abstract:A successful algorithm for the recognition of partially distorted human face images is presented, The key to this approach is to combine both local and global information. The results are compared with traditional elastic matching algorithms and a decreased mismatch rate is reported.

Abstract:Global features-based methods and local features -based methods have been very successful in face recognition system, yet they can be combined together and jointly optimized so as to minimize the error of a nearest-neighbor classifier. We consider both descriptor for face images with Local Multiple Pattern, and discriminant learning techniques with Exponential Discriminant Analysis. A combination framework based on Local Multiple Pattern and Exponential Discriminant Analysis has been proposed in this paper. Firstly, our approach encodes the multi-scale face feature by Local Multiple Pattern, and then they have been extended to strengthen the discriminative ability by Exponential Discriminant Analysis; Secondly, we suggest to use the above feature on different layers independently so that a multiple classifier system can be attained. Using these techniques, we obtain the state-of-the-art performance on two public available databases. © 2013 IFSA.

Abstract:Presently, face recognition has two main barriers, which are the variation of illumination, expression, pose and the occlusion and disguise respectively. The problem of robust identification human faces with varying expression and illumination, as well as occlusion and disguise will be researched in this paper. Firstly, singular value decomposition will be used for the face image, casting the singular value vector of test face image as a linear combination of the singular value vectors of face database and used deformable model representation; then, match optimization deformable model for solving combinatorial coefficient; finally, according to the sparse nature of coefficients for classification, and use slice-weighted strategy to further improve the robustness. Experimental results on Extended Yale B Database and AR Database shows that this method is very effective for face recognition and can significantly improve the robustness and stability of disguise and occlusion.

Abstract:We propose an appearance-based face recognition method called the Laplacianface approach. By using Locality Preserving Projections (LPP), the face images are mapped into a face subspace for analysis. Different from Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) which effectively see only the Euclidean structure of face space, LPP finds an embedding that preserves local information, and obtains a face subspace that best detects the essential face manifold structure. The Laplacianfaces are the optimal linear approximations to the eigenfunctions of the Laplace Beltrami operator on the face manifold. In this way, the unwanted variations resulting from changes in lighting, facial expression, and pose may be eliminated or reduced. Theoretical analysis shows that PCA, LDA, and LPP can be obtained from different graph models. We compare the proposed Laplacianface approach with Eigenface and Fisherface methods on three different face data sets. Experimental results suggest that the proposed Laplacianface approach provides a better representation and achieves lower error rates in face recognition.

Abstract:This paper describes a face recognition algorithm based on both global and local information. The algorithm proposed here combines global and local information together. The paper applies PCA to the whole face image while applying PCA combining LDA to some local regions of the image. The algorithm is tested on ORL face database, which contains 400 face images. It achieves a recognition rate of 97%, and demonstrates an improvement compared with the standard algorithm based only on global information.

Abstract:We present a new face recognition algorithm using both component information and global information from human faces. We first obtained the positions of key points, such as eye iris and nose tip, in human face by locating face components, then used positions to limit the search area of elastic matching. Experimental results show that higher recognition speed is obtained while the recognition rate remains undercreased even increased.

Abstract:For Face Recognition (FR) task, local feature based approaches have proven to be more robust to variations than the holistic approaches. As one of the state-of-the-art local descriptors with excellent performance for matching different images of an object or a scene, Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) has sparingly been used in FR, and whether it is a good descriptor for face images needs to be analyzed more. In this paper we propose a face representation approach based on SIFT and Spatial Pyramid Representation (SPR), to enhance the recognition performance of SIFT based method. Firstly it employs SIFT to extract discriminative local features and then constructs Spatial Pyramid to form a local-holistic representation of a face image. Finally Classifiers such as Nearest Neighbor (NN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) could be performed on representation vectors of equal length. The comparative experimental results on ORL and Yale databases indicate that our approach achieves better performance than other SIFT based methods. In addition, it shows great robustness against environmental variations such as pose mismatches, imperfect face alignment, various facial expressions and accessory configuration variations, demonstrating a new alternative method for FR task.

Abstract:In this paper, a new face recognition algorithm based on a single frontal-view image for each face subject is proposed, which considers the effect of the face manifold structure. A human face is considered a combination of a sequence of local image blocks. Then an elastic local reconstruction (ELR) method is proposed to measure the similarities between the image block pairs in order to measure the difference between the two face images. Our algorithm not only benefits from the face manifold structure, in terms of being robust to various image variations, but also is computationally simple because there is no need to build the face manifold. We evaluate the performance of our proposed face recognition algorithm with the use of different databases and consistent and promising experimental results were obtained.

Abstract:An algorithm to improve the robustness of elastic matching in face recognition is proposed when it is strongly disturbed by the background. Automatic human face recognition has various applications. Elastic matching is an important face recognition algorithm, and it has higher robustness compared to other algorithms. But it also cannot deal with the disturbance from background effectively . The basic point of our algorithm is combining local information and global information together and using the local information undisturbed by the background to improve elastic matching algorithm. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method has improved the robustness of elastic matching.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new face recognition algorithm based on a single frontal-view image for each face subject, which considers the effect of the face manifold structure. Consistent and promising experimental results were obtained, which show that our algorithm can greatly improve the recognition rates under all the different conditions.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new feature extraction approach for face recognition based on Curvelet transform and local binary pattern operator. The motivation of this approach is based on two observations. One is that Curvelet transform is a new anisotropic multi-resolution analysis tool, which can effectively represent image edge discontinuities; the other is that local binary pattern operator is one of the best current texture descriptors for face images. As the curvelet features in different frequency bands represent different information of the original image, we extract such features using different methods for different frequency bands. Technically, the lowest frequency band component is processed using the local binary pattern method, and only the medium frequency band components are normalized. And then, we combine them to create a feature set, and use the local preservation projection to reduce its dimension. Finally, we classify the test samples using the nearest neighbor classifier in the reduced space. Extensive experiments on the Yale database, the extended Yale B database, the PIE pose 09 database, and the FRGC database illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
A Face Recognition Method Based on Local Feature Analysis

Abstract:Elastic Bunch Graph Matching has been proved effective for face recognition. But the recognition procedure needs large computation. Here we present an automatic face recognition method based on local feature analysis. The local features are firstly located by the face structure knowledge and gray level distribution information, rather than searching on the whole image as it does in Elastic Bunch Graph Matching. Thus the whole computation is greatly decreased. Then the features are adjusted using a data structure named Face Bunch Gra ph. The face is represented by Gabor jets of the features and their spatial distances. Several distance metrics are tested and the results are given.

Abstract:During the image acquisition process of face recognition, the obtained face images are affected inevitably by varied illumination and position in different environment. Local Binary Pattern (LBP) operator is used to decrease illumination effectiveness. Improved Pairwise-constrained Multiple Metric Learning method (IPMML) is proposed as a classification metric in our prior work, which solves the misalignment problem in a better way compared with PMML. To solve the high computation complexity of IPMML, Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) is performed before IPMML. Thus, a face recognition method based on LBP and IPMML is proposed, which can overcome the illumination and misalignment problems. LBP is selected to extract texture features of face images firstly. Second, LDA is applied to reduce the dimension. Then the fisher features are divided into sub-blocks according to the dimension of features and every block is a column vector. Fourth, a classification metric -- IPMML is used to obtain the optimum Mahalanobis matrix. Fifth, the Mahalanobis matrix is used to compute the final discriminative distance. Finally, the Nearest Neighborhood Classifier (NNC) is applied to classify face images. The experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve high recognition rates and is robust to illumination and facial expression variation, especially for misaligned face images.
Robust 3D Face Recognition by Local Shape Difference Boosting

Abstract:This paper proposes a new 3D face recognition approach, Collective Shape Difference Classifier (CSDC), to meet practical application requirements, i.e., high recognition performance, high computational efficiency, and easy implementation. We first present a fast posture alignment method which is self-dependent and avoids the registration between an input face against every face in the gallery. Then, a Signed Shape Difference Map (SSDM) is computed between two aligned 3D faces as a mediate representation for the shape comparison. Based on the SSDMs, three kinds of features are used to encode both the local similarity and the change characteristics between facial shapes. The most discriminative local features are selected optimally by boosting and trained as weak classifiers for assembling three collective strong classifiers, namely, CSDCs with respect to the three kinds of features. Different schemes are designed for verification and identification to pursue high performance in both recognition and computation. The experiments, carried out on FRGC v2 with the standard protocol, yield three verification rates all better than 97.9 percent with the FAR of 0.1 percent and rank-1 recognition rates above 98 percent. Each recognition against a gallery with 1,000 faces only takes about 3.6 seconds. These experimental results demonstrate that our algorithm is not only effective but also time efficient.

Abstract:In the paper, we propose a new method for face recognition. Firstly, we extract global features using Kernel Principal Component Analysis (KPCA)) technique and extract local features using Independent Component Analysis (ICA) technique. We select some of the local features and the global features and combine them. Then we performance classification using the combination features. For validation of our method, we have tested our method on the ORL face database by using linear Support Vector Machine. Meanwhile, we have compared performance of our method with that of PCA-based, KPCA-based and ICA-based methods. The experiment results show the performance of our method is superior to those of other methods.

Abstract:This paper proposes to combine the global and local facial features in both serial and parallel manner. Firstly, global features are used for coarse classification. Then, global and local features are integrated for fine classification. In the proposed method, global and local features are extracted by Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) and Gabor Wavelets Transform (GWT) respectively. Abstract:This paper proposes a score level fusion method using both global and local features for face recognition.The global features are constructed by applying several local descriptors to the whole face image.The local features are obtained directly from the subsets of the constructed global features with corresponding space locations.Two fusion strategies are proposed based on different practical preferences on the performance or computational time of the face recognition system.Experimental results on the large scale face database(FRVT v2.0) show that the proposed methods significantly improve system performance with small computational time increments.
Elastic shape-texture matching for human face recognition

Abstract:In this paper, a novel, elastic, shape-texture matching method, namely ESTM, for human face recognition is proposed. In our approach, both the shape and the texture information are used to compare two faces without establishing any precise pixel-wise correspondence. The edge map is used to represent the shape of an image, while the texture information is characterized by both the Gabor representations and the gradient direction of each pixel. Combining these features, a shape-texture Hausdorff distance is devised to compute the similarity of two face images. The elastic matching is robust to small, local distortions of the feature points such as those caused by facial expression variations. In addition, the use of the edge map, Gabor representations and the direction of the image gradient can all alleviate the effect of illumination to a certain extent. With different databases, experimental results show that our algorithm can always achieve a better performance than other face recognition algorithms under different conditions, except when an image is under poor and uneven illumination. Experiments based on the Yale database, AR database, ORL database and YaleB database show that our proposed method can achieve recognition rates of 88.7%, 97.7%, 78.3% and 89.5%, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, face recognition technology is studied and explored, and the classical local binary pattern (LBP) algorithm is studied and improved. An improved LBP algorithm is proposed to solve the deficiency of LBP: a “double circle” LBP algorithm is proposed, which improves the rotation invariability of LBP to a greater extent and has a good recognition effect on small-pose face images. On the basis of good recognition effect of LBP based on partitioning, the idea of “multiple partitioning + intermediate partitioning” is put forward, which effectively makes up for the shortage of incomplete extraction of peripheral information of original segmentation line. Facial features are the key features of face recognition. Different organs contribute differently to face image recognition. The idea of “key block” based on the original block is proposed. Finally, the application of an LBP algorithm for face recognition is taken as an example, and the experimental results verify the reliability of the face recognition method based on LBP for weak light and expression change images.

Abstract:Face Recognition using Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) for Local and Global Features involves recognizing the corresponding face image from the database. The face image obtained from the user is cropped such that only the frontal face image is extracted, eliminating the background. The image is restricted to a size of 128 x 128 pixels. All images in the database are gray level images. DCT is applied to the entire image. This gives DCT coefficients, which are global features. Local features such as eyes, nose and mouth are also extracted and DCT is applied to these features. Depending upon the recognition rate obtained for each feature, they are given weightage and then combined. Both local and global features are used for comparison. By comparing the ranks for global and local features, the false acceptance rate for DCT can be minimized.

Abstract:To overcome the drawbacks of the existing discriminant locality preserving projections algorithm for feature extraction,a discriminant local median preserving projections algorithm is proposed for face recognition.The algorithm obtains the optimal projection matrix by maximizing the between-class distances and minimizing the within-class distances simultaneously.It makes use of class medians to calculate the between-class distances to preserve the useful details in the images.Besides,it designs a different similarity weighting mechanism to be apt to preserve neighborhood structure of intra-class samples with little noise such that the robustness of recognition performance is further improved.Experiments on the ORL,Yale and AR face databases validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
