Abstract:We review and highlight some unexpected findings in our continuous effort to synthesize well defined polymer of very high molecular weight with reversible addition-fragmentation transfer (RAFT) emulsion polymerization. In the RAFT emulsion polymerization using extremely low initiator concentrations, it was found that the polymerization rate could remain fast. The reason is the higher particle nucleation efficiency at the lower initiator concentrations, which leads to an unexpected increase in the particle number with decrease of the initiator concentrations. At very low initiator concentrations, a pronounced particle activation/deactivation effect has been observed. When the average number of the particle activation/deactivation cycle per particle is less than 15 in the whole course of Stage II and III, both molecular weight and particle size distributions quickly broaden controlled by the increasing fluctuation in the number of the particle activation/deactivation cycle experienced by each particle. Well-defined polystyrene of over 550 kg/mol has been synthesized with livingness around 90%, molecular weight distribution dispersity (D) around 1.2, polymerization time for over 90% conversion about 780 minutes. The very high livingness at such a high molecular weight is ascribed to significantly lower transfer constant to monomer than well-documented values in conventional radical polymerization. It is very likely that RAFT reactions could significantly suppress the transfer reactions to monomer.

Abstract:It has been well documented that RAFT miniemulsion polymerization has broader molecular weight distribution, compared with its bulk polymerization counterpart. Interestingly, it was found that the PDI value of RAFT miniemulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) mediated by 2-cyranoprop-2-yl dithiobenzoate (CPDB) was still as low as its corresponding bulk polymerization did. PDI could be as low as 1.13 even with typical sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS, 1wt%, surfactant) and n-hexadecane (HD, 2wt%, costablizer) concentrations. When the polymerization was carried out at 60°C, a dramatic increase in PDI (>1.4) was observed after 80% monomer conversion since RAFT addition reaction became diffusion-controlled. Increasing the polymerization temperature to 80°C could reduce the PDI to 1.2 even at 100% monomer conversion. The compartmentalization effect of radicals was surprisingly absence before 30% monomer conversion but became pronounced afterwards in the miniemulsion polymerization. Thus, it still took less time to finish the miniemulsion polymerization with the increase of the surfactant levels.

Abstract:It was demonstrated that the fast RAFT polymerization of styrene with almost perfect polymerization performance could be achieved by using a carefully designed miniemulsion polymerization system. With much higher levels of surfactant (9 wt % based on monomer) and co-stabilizer (5 wt % based on monomer) than those in typical miniemulsion polymerization, the miniemulsion polymerization using 1-phenylethyl phenyl-dithioacetate as a RAFT agent showed a very fast polymerization rate,excellent performance of living radical polymerization during the entire polymerization process, and narrow particle size distributions. It was concluded that RAFT miniemulsion polymerization presented an excellent commercial process for a living radical polymerization system.

Abstract:The RAFT polymerization of styrene in miniemulsion using 1-phenylethyl phenyl-dithioacetate (PEPDTA) as a RAFT agent was investigated, in attempt to reveal the mechanism for the often observed inferior performance such as low polymerization rate, broad molecular weight distribution and particle size distribution in the RAFT miniemulsion polymerization with regular levels of surfactant and co-stabilizer (1wt% sodium dodecyl sulfate and 2wt% hexadecane). It is strongly evident that a few of large oligomer particles consisting of oligomer, RAFT agent (RAFT agent refers to the original RAFT agent), and monomer would be formed in the early stage of the polymerization due to the superswelling of the first nucleated droplets. With the regular levels of surfactant and co-stabilizer, the observed low polymerization rate, broadened molecular weight distribution, slow conversion of the RAFT agent, lower Np, and broadened particle size distribution could be well explained by the formation of these large oligomer particles and their prolonged existence. When the formation of the oligomer particles was suppressed by increasing surfactant and co-stabilizer levels and wise selection of types of RAFT agent, the molecular weight distribution could be narrowed to around 1.3 and particle size distribution could be close to that of the conventional non-living miniemulsion polymerization.
Batch-semi-batch Two-Stage RAFT Mini-Emulsion Polymerization of Styrene

Abstract:A batch-semi-batch two-stage reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer(RAFT)mini-emulsion polymerization of styrene was investigated.It was found that the starting point of the feeding stage(the semi-batch stage)and the solid content of the final latex were critical to reducing the amount of coagulum.The monomer feeding of the second stage should start after monomer conversion 40% of the first stage and the solid content of the final latex should remain below 40%.Under such conditions little coagulum was observed.It was concluded that the two-stage semi-batch RAFT mini-emulsion polymerization was effective to synthesize higher molecular weight polymer(～8×104 g·mol-1)with narrow molecular weight distribution(PDI=～1.3)and low residues of the surfactant and co-stabilizer(～1.5%,mass).

Abstract:This work reported branching studies in reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) miniemulsion copolymerization of styrene and triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA), and control of branching density distribution using a model‐based computer‐programed monomer feeding strategy. Highly branched polystyrenes (PS) were produced with small amount of TEGDMA. The branching density experienced drifting in a batch operation. A semi‐batch kinetic model by combining the kinetic model for RAFT miniemulsion copolymerization with a semi‐batch reactor model was used to design the monomer feeding rate profiles for targeted branching density distributions. A series of hyperbranched PSs with the designed branching density distributions were synthesized.

Abstract:Copolymer composition distribution (CCD) is an important parameter of chain microstructure that has significant impact on the material properties of polymer products. Controlled/living radical polymerization (CLRP) has provided a great opportunity in producing polymers with predesigned CCDs through a model-based monomer feeding policy (MMFP) in homogeneous systems. In this work, the MMFP has been expanded to heterogeneous systems. Reversible addition fragmentation transfer (RAFT) mini-emulsion polymerizations of styrene (St) and butyl acrylate (BA) were carried out with 3-benzyltrithiocarbonyl propionic acid (BCPA) used as a RAFT agent. A kinetic model was developed and correlated to the batch St/BA RAFT mini-emulsion experimental data for parameter estimation. The MMFP was then developed by combining the kinetic model with a semibatch reactor model and applied to the semibatch St/BA RAFT mini-emulsion copolymerization for the synthesis of targeted CCDs. The model agreed well with the polymerization kinetics. A series of St/BA copolymers with predesigned CCDs were successfully synthesized.
Ab Initio Emulsion and Miniemulsion Polymerization of Styrene Mediated by a Cyclohexenyl-Functionalized Amphiphilic RAFT Agent

Abstract:We designed and used a cyclohexenyl-functionalized amphiphilic macromolecular reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (macro-RAFT) agent as surfactant and polymerization mediator for (mini) emulsion polymerization of styrene (St), aiming at synthesizing nanoparticles with vinyl-enriched surface and well-defined polymer chains. Unexpectedly, the pendent cyclohexenyl units in the macro-RAFT agent were found to undergo significant copolymerization with St exclusively during the nucleation period in the ab initio emulsion polymerization, leading to the consumption of cyclohexenyl groups, positive deviation of molecular weights, and broad molecular weight distributions. By contrast, in miniemulsion polymerization, the radical polymerization exhibited superb selectivity toward St monomers relative to the pendent cyclohexene vinyl units just as in the solution polymerization. The obtained polymer chains retained designed molecular weights, low polydispersity indexes, and quantitative cyclohexenyl functionalities confined to the particle surface. Thus, PSt particles with vinyl-enriched surface were obtained via miniemulsion polymerization.

Abstract:Reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) ab initio emulsion polymerization of styrene mediated by 2-(((dodecylsulfanyl) carbonothioyl) sulfanyl) propanoic acid was investigated with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), poly(acrylic acid)(29)-b-polystyrene(5) trithiocarbonate macro-RAFT agent (PAA(29)-PSt(5)-RAFT), and poly(acrylic acid)(29)-b-polystyrene5 diblock co-oligomer (PAA(29)-PSt(5)) as the surfactant, respectively. Polystyrene latex having controlled molecular weight, relatively low PD and narrow particle size distribution was obtained by postneutralizing PAA(29)-PSt(5)-RAFT and PAA(29)-PSt(5). This result was in agreement with the superswelling hypothesis that superswollen oligomer-containing particles caused the colloidal instability in the early stage of RAFT emulsion polymerization with SDS as surfactant. The successes of PAA(29)-PSt(5)-RAFT and PAA(29)-PSt(5) were due to the high interfacial tensions of the styrene/water/surfactant systems that suppressed the superswelling and thus improved the colloidal instability. A majority of the initial RAFT molecules appeared to be converted at a low monomer conversion due to the inhibition period.

Abstract:We report an ab initio emulsion reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of styrene using poly(acrylic acid-b-styrene) trithiocarbonate as surfactant and RAFT agent. The system is characteristic or high polymerization rate, controlled polymer molecular weight, and free of coagulum. Design of the amphiphilic RAFT agent is found to be critical for the success. Poly(acrylic acid) neutralization increased the colloidal stability but led to uncontrolled molecular weight development and broad molecular weight distribution, attributed to small size and thus large number of micelles resulting in continuous particle nucleation. Polystyrene with molecular weight LIP to 120 kg/mol and block styrene-butylacrylate copolymer with well-controlled molecular weight were readily synthesized with this method.

Abstract:The tactics of targeting copolymer composition (CC) and molecular weight (MW) via semibatch controlled radical polymerization (CRP) have been extensively studied. However, little effort is made to target copolymer sequence length (CSL) and its triad sequence, which are among the key microstructures determining material properties of the copolymers. This work presents a method to design and synthesize targeted CSL and copolymer triads in a reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer radical mini-emulsion copolymerization system (RAFT) through a semibatch chain and sequence model coupled with Alfrey Mayo model. The kinetic model was first derived and correlated with experimental results of the batch St/BA copolymerizations. The semibatch RAFT model was then employed to calculate the feed-rate to target CSL and their triads. St/BA copolymers with different uniform CSLs and their triads are synthesized through the programmed semibatch RAFT mini-emulsion copolymerization processes.

Abstract:Few successes about butyl acrylate (BA) RAFT miniemulsion homopolymerization were reported, even though styrene, methyl methacrylate, and vinyl acetate had been successfully applied in reversible addition fragmentation transfer (RAFT) miniemulsion polymerization. In this article, four types of RAFT agent with various designed R and Z groups [benzyl dithioisobutyrate (BDIB), 1-phenylethyl phenyldithioacetate (PEPDTA), cumyl dithioisobutyrate (CDIB), benzyl dithiobenzoate] were used to mediate BA miniemulsion polymerization using the conditions (5 wt % hexadance and sodium dodecyl sulfate) effective for styrene and methyl methaerylate systems. All four types of the RAFT agents effectively control over the bulk polymerization. In contrast, only BDIB resulted in a rather narrow molecular weight distribution in the miniemulsion polymerization. A pronounced inhibition and rate retardation were observed in both bulk and miniemulsion polymerizations mediated by CDIB and benzyl dithiobenzoate. When compared with the bulk polymerization, a much longer inhibition period (over eight times) was observed in the CDIB-mediated. miniemulsion polymerization. It was concluded that only the RAFT agent with the primary R group and Z group with less stabilizing ability to the intermediate radicals is effective to mediate BA miniemulsion polymerization in terms of achieving a narrow molecular weight distribution and short inhibition period. Abstract:RAFT ab initio emulsion copolymerization of gamma-methyl-alpha-methylene-gamma-butyrolactone (MeMBL) and styrene with various monomer ratios was investigated with PAA(20)-PS5 trithiocarbonate being mediator and surfactant at 70 degrees C. The polymerization was fully controlled as evidenced by stable latexes, well predicted molecular weights and low PDIs about 1.2 when [MeMBL]:[St] <= 1:2. However, in the case of [MeMBL]:[St] = 1:1, the molecular weight became out of control due to gel effect of RAFT reactions. The relatively water-soluble MeMBL was found to dramatically influence the polymerization kinetics and copolymer properties, as evidenced by (I) No inhibition period was observed; (2) The copolymer compositions in the early stage of polymerization were much higher than those predicted by the Mayo-Lewis equation in the case of [MeMBL]:[St] = 1:2, leading to the formation of linear gradient copolymer. (3) T(g)s of the copolymers from emulsion copolymerization were higher than those from bulk copolymerization. It was concluded that we could synthesize the gradient copolymer with preset molecular weight and low PDI in RAFT emulsion polymerization, T-g of which should be much higher than 100 degrees C. The Synthesis of High Molecular Weight Block Copolymers by Raft Polymerization

Abstract:RAFT polymerization is a type of psudo-living radical polymerization. In order to synthesize high pure block copolymers by RAFT polymerization, it is desirable to suppress the irreversible termination which may result in the formation of dead chains. For polymers less than 5 x 10(4) g/mol, the dead chain fraction could remain to be lower than 0.1 by reducing the initiator concentration. In the synthesis of block copolymers, the dead chains formed in the first stage are actually contaminant. Targeting to the synthesis of high pure block copolymers with high molecular weight using RAFT polymerization, we studied the copolymerization of butyl acrylate and styrene mediated by 1-phenylethyl phenyl-dithioacetate (PEPDTA) as a RAFT agent. The influences of the type of initiators (AIBN (2-2'-azobis ( isobutyronitrile)), ACC ( 1-1'-azobis ( cyclohexane-carbonitrile)), the concentrations of initiator and polymerization temperature on the copolymerization kinetics and molecular weight and its distribution were investigated. When AIBN was used, the polymerization would stop at middle monomer conversion, which limited the increase of molecular weight of the copolymer if we reduced the initiator concentration. It was found that only with the initiator (ACC) with small decomposition rate constant and high polymerization temperature, the block copolymer with high molecular weight and small fraction of dead chains ( < 0.1) could be synthesized. The reason for these quite strict requirements is that the initiator concentration should remain far below that of the conventional radical polymerization, which is limited by the very low RAFT concentration.
Significantly Suppressed Chain Transfer to Monomer Reactions in RAFT Emulsion Polymerization of Styrene

Abstract:The highest accessible molecular weight of the living product in controlled/living radical polymerizations (CLRPs) is determined by the constant of chain transfer to monomer reaction. Thus, the highest molecular weight of living polystyrene had been believed around 100 kg/mol in CLRPs. In our previous report (Yan, K; Gao, X.; Luo, Y. Well-Defined High Molecular Weight Polystyrene with High Rates and High Livingness Synthesized via Two-Stage RAFT Emulsion Polymerization. Macromol. Rapid Commun. 2015, 36 (13), 1277-1282), we surprisingly found that the livingness of polystyrene of 550 kg/mol could be up to 90% in RAFT emulsion polymerization. Herein, we experimentally measure the constant of chain transfer to monomer reaction in RAFT emulsion polymerization of styrene at various temperatures from 60-80 degrees C. Very interestingly, it is found that the constant of chain transfer to monomer reaction should be only about one-third of that of the corresponding conventional radical polymerization. From the derived Arrhenius equation, it is supported that the fast competitive RAFT reactions might significantly decrease the collision frequency for chain transfer to monomer reactions.
Reversible Addition–fragmentation Transfer (RAFT) Copolymerization of Methyl Methacrylate and Styrene in Miniemulsion

Abstract:In the reversible addition-fragmentation transfer (RAFT) copolymerization of two monomers, even with the simple terminal model, there are two kinds of macroradical and two kinds of polymeric RAFT agent with different R groups. Because the structure of the R group could exert a significant influence on the RAFT process, RAFT copolymerization may behave differently from RAFT homopolymerization. The RAFT copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and styrene (St) in miniemulsion was investigated. The performance of the RAFT copolymerization of MMA/St in miniemulsion was found to be dependent on the feed monomer compositions. When St is dominant in the feed monomer composition, RAFT copolymerization is well controlled in the whole range of monomer conversion. However, when MMA is dominant, RAFT copolymerization may be, in some cases, out of control in the late stage of copolymerization, and characterized by a fast increase in the polydispersity index (PDI). The RAFT process was found to have little influence on composition evolution during copolymerization. The synthesis of the well-defined gradient copolymers and poly[St-b-(St-co-MMA)] block copolymer by RAFT miniemulsion copolymerization was also demonstrated. (C) 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
Reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization of methyl methacrylate in emulsion

Abstract:Theoretical simulations showed that for controlled/living radical polymerization in an emulsion system, some of the earliest born particles could be superswollen to a size close to 1 mu m. We hypothesized that the superswelling of these particles would lead to colloidal instability. Under the guidance of the simulation results, reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) emulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was carried out. Experimental results showed that increasing the initiation rate, surfactant level, and targeted molecular weight could improve the colloidal stability of the RAFT polymerization of MMA in an emulsion. The experimental results were in full accord with the theoretical predictions. The poor control of the molecular weight and polydispersity index was found to have a close relationship with the colloidal instability. For the first time, we demonstrated that RAFT polymerization could successfully be implemented with little coagulum, good control of the molecular weight, and a low polydispersity index with the same process used for traditional emulsion polymerization but with higher surfactant levels and initiation rates. Abstract:ABSTRACTReversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) emulsion polymerization is becoming an important technique to synthesize the latex of block copolymers. A previous study showed that in the synthesis of polystyrene‐b‐poly(butyl acrylate)‐b‐polystyrene triblock copolymer via RAFT emulsion polymerization using amphiphilic oligo(acrylic acid‐styrene) macroRAFT as surfactant and mediator, the molecular weight distribution could be much broadened to PDI higher than 2. In this study, an in‐depth investigation was performed to decrease PDI. It was found that long‐chain branches could be formed in the synthesis of triblock block copolymer, leading to the appearance of a higher molecular weight shoulder in the GPC curve of the final product. The lower neutralization degree of acrylic acid (AA) units on the macroRAFT and shorter AA chains would help to suppress the formation the long‐chain branches, leading to PDI around 1.5. It is evidenced that the successful suppression is due to the promotion of radical entry as a result of decreased interfacial transport impedance. It is also evidenced that the presence of styrene during the polymerization of butyl acrylate could promote the formation of long chain branches. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. The Influence of Surfactant Coverage of the Minidroplets on Raft Miniemulsion Polymerization

Abstract:The surfactant coverage of minidroplets was tuned by postaddition of more surfactants after preparation of the miniemulsion of styrene. The influence of surfactant coverage on reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) miniemulsion polymerization of styrene was investigated. When the surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate; SDS) coverage was as low as 40%, two kinds of particles, denoted as polymer and oligomer particles, were formed in the early stage of the polymerization. Polymer chains within two kinds of particles grew in a parallel way during the rest period of the polymerization. The oligomer particles contributed less than 10% to the final monomer conversion but consumed over one in third the original RAFT agent molecules. Oligomer particles were larger in size but much lower in molecular weight. Both the particle size and molecular weight distributions were bimodal. With increase of SDS coverage, the formation of oligomer particles was suppressed. As a result, the nucleation efficiency of the minidroplets was greatly enhanced and the molecular weight and particle size distributions were dramatically narrowed. The formation of the oligomer particles was ascribed to the superswelling occurring in the beginning stage of the polymerization. The experimental observations are in excellent accord to the superswelling theory. Abstract:Ab initio reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) emulsion polymerization of butadiene was investigated by using the amphiphilic poly(acrylic acid(n)-b-styrene(5)) trithiocarbonate as both surfactant and mediator. The neutralization on acrylic acid (AA) units played significant influence on the gelation. When half of the AA units were neutralized, the gelation occurred in the early stage of the polymerization so that the highest accessible molecular weight of polybutadiene was as low as 5 kg mol (1). In the non-neutralized conditions, the gelation was much retarded so that the highest accessible molecular weight was increased up to 23 kg mol(-1). In the non-neutralized conditions, potassium persulfate could not initiate the polymerization. When azobisisobutyronitrile was used as initiator, the polymerization mediated by poly(acrylic acid(27)-b-styrene(5)) trithiocarbonate could proceed much faster than the solution polymerization did. The latex was stable. Before the gel point, molecular weight agreed well with the theoretical prediction while PDI was relatively high due to the branching reaction. The poly(butadiene-b-styrene) core/shell particles could obtained by extending polybutadiene. When the n value in poly (acrylic acid(n)-b-styrene(5)) trithiocarbonate was lower than 20, the coalescence would occur, leading to the formation of some coagulum.
