Abstract:We consider a class of minimal extensions of the Standard Model with an extra massive neutral gauge boson Z'. They include both family-universal models, where the extra U(1) is associated with (B-L), and non-universal models where the Z' is coupled to a non-trivial linear combination of B and the lepton flavours. After giving an estimate of the range of parameters compatible with a Grand Unified Theory, we present the current experimental bounds, discussing the interplay between electroweak precision tests and direct searches at the Tevatron. Finally, we assess the discovery potential of the early LHC.

A Model of Fermion Masses and Mixings Triggered by Family Problem in Warped Extra Dimensions

Abstract:We suggest a model which addresses both the fermion mass hierarchy problem and the family problem in two-layer warped extra dimensions. In this model, 3 family fermions in 4 dimensions (4D) generate from 1 family in two-layer warped 6D by two step Kluza-Klein decompositions. The mass hierarchies are produced by the exponential behavior of 4D fermion zero mode profiles. The mixings and masses of fermions are closely related to the family problem. By adjusting parameters in this model, the numerical results can be very close to the experimental data both in the quark sector and in the lepton sector. In the lepton sector, we suppose neutrinos to be Dirac ones. The neutrino masses of sub-eV scale are obtained, and also CP violation emerges in the lepton sector.

Abstract:In extra dimensions, the quark and lepton mass hierarchy can be reproduced from the same order bulk mass parameters, and standard model fermion families can be generated from one generation in the high dimensional space. We try to explain the origin of the same order bulk mass parameters and address the family replication puzzle simultaneously. We show that they correlate with each other. We construct models that families are generated from extra dimensional space, and in the meantime the bulk mass parameters of same order emerge naturally. The interesting point is that the bulk mass parameters, which are in same order, correspond to the eigenvalues of a Schrödinger-like equation. We also discuss the problem existing in this approach.

Abstract:We consider a gauge symmetry extension of the standard model given by $SU(3)_C\otimes SU(2)_L\otimes U(1)_X\otimes U(1)_N\otimes Z_2$ with minimal particle content, where $X$ and $N$ are family dependent but determining the hypercharge as $Y=X+N$, while $Z_2$ is an exact discrete symmetry. In our scenario, $X$ (while $N$ is followed by $X-Y$) and $Z_2$ charge assignments are inspired by the number of fermion families and the stability of dark matter, as observed, respectively. We examine the mass spectra of fermions, scalars, and gauge bosons, as well as their interactions, in presence of a kinetic mixing term between $U(1)_{X,N}$ gauge fields. We discuss in detail the phenomenology of the new gauge boson and the right-handed neutrino dark matter stabilized by $Z_2$ conservation. We obtain parameter spaces simultaneously satisfying the recent CDF $W$-boson mass, electroweak precision measurements, particle colliders, as well as dark matter observables, if the kinetic mixing parameter is not necessarily small.

Abstract:Based on the general description for Z'-Z-γmixing as derived from theelectroweak chiral Lagrangian, we characterize and classify the various newphysics models involving the Z' boson that have appeared in the literature intofive classes: 1. Models with minimal Z'-Z mass mixing; 2. Models with minimalZ'-Z kinetic mixing; 3. Models with general Z'-Z mixing; 4. Models withZ'-γkinetic and Z'-Z mixing; and 5. Models with Stueckelberg-type mixing.The corresponding mixing matrices are explicitly evaluated for each of theseclasses. We constrain and classify the Z' boson charges with respect toquark-leptons by anomaly cancellation conditions.

Abstract:We propose an extra-dimension framework on the orbifold $S^1/Z_2$ for understanding the origin of the fermion mass and mixing hierarchies. Introducing the flavor symmetry $G_F(=${\it non-Abelian}$\times${\it Abelian}) as well as the extra gauged $U(1)$ symmetries through the bulk, we regard the $SU(2)$ singlet and doublet fermions in the Standard Model (SM) to be localized at the separate 3-branes and let the extra $SU(2)$ singlet flavored fermions in the bulk couple to the SM fermions at the 3-branes. The extra $U(1)$ symmetries satisfy the $U(1)$ gravitational anomaly-free condition, playing a crucial role in achieving the desirable fermion mass and mixing hierarchies and making the flavored axion naturally light. The singlet scalar fields, the flavon fields, are responsible for the spontaneous breaking of $G_F$ on the two 3-branes, while the $SU(2)$ singlet flavored fermions are integrated out to give rise to the effective Yukawa couplings for the SM fermions, endowed with the information of $G_F$ breaking in the two sectors. The flavored axion from the PQ symmetry is also proposed for solving the strong CP problem and being a dark matter candidate in our model.

Abstract:We review minimal realistic grand unified models based on $SU(5)$ and $SO(10)$ gauge groups. The models with small Higgs representations and higher dimensional operators - under the assumption of no cancellations in proton decay amplitudes - predict nearby oases with new light particles. Two of them stand out: real fermion and scalar weak triplets. The former generates dynamically neutrino Majorana mass through the so-called type III seesaw mechanism, while the latter naturally gets a small vacuum expectation value and thus generically modifies $W$-boson mass. On the contrary, the renormalisable versions of these theories fail to determine the particle spectra. In particular, in the renormalisable version of the $SO(10)$ theory the mass of the right-handed gauge boson - normally assumed (and allowed) to lie far in the desert - could be even accessible at the LHC. Last but not least, we show that in the minimal supersymmetric $SU(5)$ theory all the superpartners can lie orders of magnitude above the weak scale, unless one requires strict naturalness. Thus, the so-called split supersymmetry does not imply any light states.

Abstract:We consider extension of the standard model $SU(2{)}_{l}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}SU(2{)}_{h}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}U(1)$ where the first two families of quarks and leptons transform according to the $SU(2{)}_{l}$ group and the third family according to the $SU(2{)}_{h}$ group. In this approach, the largeness of top-quark mass is associated with the large vacuum expectation value of the corresponding Higgs field. The model predicts almost degenerate heavy ${W}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ and ${Z}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ bosons with nonuniversal couplings, and extra Higgs bosons. We present in detail the symmetry breaking mechanism, and carry out the subsequent phenomenology of the gauge sector. We compare the model with electroweak precision data, and conclude that the extra gauge bosons and the Higgs bosons whose masses lie in the TeV range, can be discovered at the LHC.

Abstract:We study a class of non-exotic minimal $U(1) '$ extensions of the Standard Model, which includes all scenarios that are anomaly-free with the ordinary fermion content augmented by one Right-Handed neutrino per generation, wherein the new Abelian gauge group is spontaneously broken by the non-zero Vacuum Expectation Value of an additional Higgs singlet field, in turn providing mass to a $Z'$ state. By adopting the $B-L$ example, whose results can be recast into those pertaining to the whole aforementioned class, and allowing for both scalar and gauge mixing, we first extract the surviving parameter space in presence of up-to-date theoretical and experimental constraints. Over the corresponding parameter configurations, we then delineate the high energy behaviour of such constructs in terms of their stability and perturbativity. Finally, we highlight key production and decay channels of the new states entering the spectra of this class of models, i.e., heavy neutrinos, a second Higgs state and the $Z'$, which are amenable to experimental investigation at the Large Hadron Collider. We therefore set the stage to establish a direct link between measurements obtainable at the Electro-Weak scale and the dynamics of the underlying model up to those where a Grand Unification Theory embedding a $U(1)'$ can be realised.

Electroweak symmetry breaking and fermion masses from extra dimensions

Abstract:We study higher-dimensional non-supersymmetric orbifold models where the Higgs field is identified with some internal component of a gauge field. We address two important and related issues that constitute severe obstacles towards model building within this type of constructions: the possibilities of achieving satisfactory Yukawa couplings and Higgs potentials. We consider models where matter fermions are localized at the orbifold fixed-points and couple to additional heavy fermions in the bulk. When integrated out, the latter induce tree-level non-local Yukawa interactions and a quantum contribution to the Higgs potential that we explicitly evaluate and analyse. The general features of these highly constrained models are illustrated through a minimal but potentially realistic five-dimensional example. Finally, we discuss possible cures for the persisting difficulties in achieving acceptable top and Higgs masses. In particular, we consider in some detail the effects induced in these models by adding localized kinetic terms for gauge fields.

Fermion masses in emergent electroweak symmetry breaking

Abstract:We consider the generation of fermion masses in an emergent model of electroweak symmetry breaking with composite W,Z gauge bosons. A universal bulk fermion profile in a warped extra dimension is used for all fermion flavors. Electroweak symmetry is broken at the UV (or Planck) scale where boundary mass terms are added to generate the fermion flavor structure. This leads to flavor-dependent nonuniversality in the gauge couplings. The effects are suppressed for the light fermion generations but are enhanced for the top quark where the $$ Zt\bar{t} $$ and $$ Wt\bar{b} $$ couplings can deviate at the 10–20% level in the minimal setup. By the AdS/CFT correspondence our model implies that electroweak symmetry is not a fundamental gauge symmetry. Instead the Standard Model with massive fermions and W,Z gauge bosons is an effective chiral Lagrangian for some underlying confining strong dynamics at the TeV scale, where mass is generated without a Higgs mechanism.

Abstract:Abstract An update is provided on theoretical and experimental aspects of a simple extension of the standard model featuring right-handed neutrinos and a second neutral gauge boson ( Z ′). We identify an ambiguity which a priori exists in the definition of electric charge in this model, and show spontaneous symmetry breaking can resolve it. We then re-analyse the experimental bounds on the mass of Z ′ in the light of recent measurements of the standard Z boson mass and width at LEP and SLC. We find that the lower bound at 90% confidence level for the Z ′ mass is 460 GeV.

Abstract:A novel grand unification model based on SO(14) is presented. Spontaneous symmetry breakings at the grand unification scale give $\mathrm{SO}(14)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{SU}(7)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{SU}{(4)}_{m}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\mathrm{SU}{(3)}_{c}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\mathrm{U}{(1)}_{e}$ where $\mathrm{U}{(1)}_{e}$ is the electromagnetic gauge field and $\mathrm{SU}{(4)}_{m}$ is the metacolor interaction which binds preons into quarks, leptons, and composite ${W}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$ and ${Z}^{0}$ bosons. All the light chiral fermions come from one spinor representation (64) of SO(14). The model predicts exactly four families of quarks and leptons, an extremely long proton lifetime, and a number of other properties in good agreement with experiments. If one of the charged leptons is substantially lighter than the others (as is the case of the electron), the following mass relation emerges quite naturally: ${(\frac{{m}_{d}}{{m}_{e}})}^{\frac{1}{3}}\ensuremath{\simeq}\frac{{m}_{s}}{{m}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}}\ensuremath{\simeq}\frac{{m}_{b}}{{m}_{\ensuremath{\tau}}}\ensuremath{\simeq}\frac{{m}_{{b}^{\ensuremath{'}}}}{{m}_{{\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{'}}}}\ensuremath{\simeq}3$, where ${b}^{\ensuremath{'}}$, ${\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ are the corresponding members of the fourth family.

Abstract:We discuss a toy model in six dimensions that predicts two fermion generations, natural mass hierarchy and intergenerational mixing. Matter is described by vector-like six dimensional fermions, one per each irreducible standard model representation. Two fermion generations arise from the compactification mechanism, through orbifold projection. They are localized in different regions of the compact space by a six dimensional mass term. Flavour symmetry is broken via Yukawa couplings, with a Higgs vacuum expectation value not constant in the extra space. A hierarchical spectrum is obtained from order one dimensionless parameters of the six dimensional theory. The Cabibbo angle arises from the soft breaking of six dimensional parity symmetry. We also briefly discuss how the present model could be extended to cover the realistic case.

Simplest Z' Model

Abstract:The differences in family-lepton numbers are anomaly-free in the minimal standard model (MSM), and can therefore be gauged. For three generations of quarks and leptons, three models emerge depending on whether (i) ${L}_{e}\ensuremath{-}{L}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}$, (ii) ${L}_{e}\ensuremath{-}{L}_{\ensuremath{\tau}}$, or (iii) ${L}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}\ensuremath{-}{L}_{\ensuremath{\tau}}$ are gauged. These are the simplest models to feature a ${Z}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ boson because no fermions beyond those already present in the MSM are required to cancel gauge anomalies. We analyze the phenomenology of models (i) and (ii) in detail, and present constraints derived from low-energy neutral-current data and CERN LEP data. We find that these ${Z}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ bosons may have a relatively low mass yet still evade present experimental bounds, while remaining detectable in current accelerators. The introduction of neutrino masses into the models is then considered. We discuss how one may incorporate both the reported 17-keV neutrino, and the Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein effect solution of the solar-neutrino problem. We then describe how to embed the extra U(1) gauge group into a horizontal SU(2)-symmetry group acting on leptons.
Simple Non-Abelian Extensions of the Standard Model Gauge Group and the Diboson Excesses at the Lhc

Abstract:The ATLAS collaboration reported excesses at around 2 TeV in the diboson production decaying into hadronic final states. We consider the possibility of explaining the excesses with extra gauge bosons in two simple non-Abelian extensions of the standard model. One is the so-called G(221) models with a symmetry structure of SU(2)(1) circle times SU(2)(2) circle times U(1)(X) and the other is the G(331) models with an extended symmetry of SU(3)(C) circle times SU(3)(L) circle times Ud(1)(X). The W' and Z' bosons emerge after the electroweak symmetry is spontaneously broken. Two patterns of symmetry breaking in the G(221) models are considered in this work: one is SU(2)(L) circle times SU(2)(2) circle times U(1)(X) circle times SU(2)(L) circle times U(1)(Y), the other is SU(2)(1) circle times SU(2)(2) circle times U(1)(Y) circle times SU(2)(L) circle times U(1)(Y). The symmetry breaking of the G(331) model is SU(3)(L) circle times U(1)(X) circle times SU(2)(L) circle times U(1)(Y). We perform a global analysis of W' and Z' phenomenology in ten new physics models, including all the channels of W'/Z' decay. Our study shows that the leptonic mode and the dijet mode of W'/Z' decays impose a very stringent bound on the parameter space in several new physics models. Such tight bounds provide a useful guide for building new physics models to address on the diboson anomalies. We also note that the left-right and leptophobic models can explain the 3.4 sigma WZ excess if the 2.6 sigma deviation in the W+W- pair around 2 TeV were confirmed to be a fluctuation of the SM backgrounds.
Maximal flavor violating $U(1)_{L_μ-L_τ}$ model with singly-charged scalar

Abstract:The $U(1)_{L_\mu-L_\tau}$ $Z'$ model has emerged as a promising candidate to address the longstanding muon $(g-2)_\mu$ anomaly. Flavor-conserving $Z'$ interactions are subject to stringent constraints from the neutrino trident process and NA64$\mu$ experiments, which limit the $Z'$ mass to $m_{Z'}<40$ MeV. To circumvent these constraints, flavor-conserving $Z'$ interactions can be converted into maximal flavor-violating interactions through a discrete exchange symmetry. Maximal flavor-violating $Z'$ interactions contribute to $\tau\to\mu\nu\bar\nu$ via the neutral current, yet the parameter space for this process conflicts with the $(g-2)_\mu$ allowed regions. To resolve this conflict, we propose introducing a singly-charged scalar that mediates via charged current interactions. This scalar is anticipated to produce a negative contribution to the lepton $(g-2)_l$ while concurrently inducing the tau decay $\tau\to\mu\nu\bar\nu$. Three distinct scenarios arise from the introduction of singly-charged scalars: the $\mathcal{O}_{LL}$ operator, driven by weak singlet and triplet, and the $\mathcal{O}_{LR}$ operator, driven by weak doublet. Our analysis of the phenomenology in these three cases reveals that the tension between the muon $(g-2)_\mu$ anomaly and $\tau\to\mu\nu\bar\nu$ for large $Z'$ masses can be effectively alleviated only by the singly-charged scalars from the weak triplet, whereas the singlet and doublet scenarios fall short. Furthermore, the singly-charged scalars from the weak triplet offer an additional explanation for the electron $(g-2)_e$ anomaly. Our findings indicate that weak triplets could play a crucial role in $Z'$ models, potentially providing valuable insights for future research into $U(1)$ frameworks.

Abstract:For understanding the hierarchies of fermion masses and mixing, we extend the standard model gauge group with $U(1)_X$ and $Z_2$ symmetry. The field content of the Standard model is augmented by three heavy right-handed neutrinos and two new scalar singlets. $U(1)_X$ charges of different fields are considered after satisfying anomaly cancellation conditions. In this scenario, the fermion masses are generated through higher dimensional effective operators. The small neutrino masses are obtained through type-1 seesaw mechanism using the heavy right handed neutrino fields. We discuss the flavor-changing neutral current processes which is originated due to the sequential nature of $U(1)_X$ symmetry. We have written effective higher dimensional operators in terms of renormalizable dimension four operators by introducing vector like fermions.

Abstract:Is there more to Dirac's gamma matrices than meets the eye? It turns out that gamma zero can be factorized into a product of three operators. This revelation facilitates the expansion of Dirac's space-time algebra to Clifford algebra Cl(0,6). The resultant rich geometric structure can be leveraged to establish a combined framework of the standard model and gravity, wherein a gravi-weak interaction between the extended vierbein field and the extended weak gauge field is allowed. Inspired by the composite Higgs model, we examine the vierbein field as an effective description of the fermion-antifermion condensation. The compositeness of space-time manifests itself at an energy scale which is different from the Planck scale. We propose that all the regular classical Lagrangian terms are of quantum condensation origin, thus possibly addressing the cosmological constant problem provided that we adopt an unconventional multi-scale renormalization procedure for quantum condensations that entail multiplications of divergent integrals. The Clifford algebra approach also permits a weaker form of charge conjugation without particle-antiparticle interchange, which leads to a Majorana-type mass that conserves lepton number. Additionally, in the context of spontaneous breaking of two global U(1) symmetries, we explore a three-Higgs-doublet model with Higgs VEVs 246 GeV, 41 GeV and 2.5 GeV which could explain the fermion mass hierarchies.
