Abstract:The Huckel problem for carbon-240 involves finding the eigenvalues of a 240 x 240 matrix which is too large even for a modern computer. We show that by utilizing the icosahedral symmetry of the molecule the characteristic polynomial is factorized and the eigenvalues obtained.

Abstract:A simple approach to the group-theoretical factorizing of the Hamiltonian matrix of highly symmetrical molecules is presented. This approach, which is based on the Lanczos method, requires only a symmetry-adapted linear combination (SALC) for each category of irreducible representation (IR) of the molecular point-group, while it reduces the size of the problem by more than one order of magnitude. We demonstrate the treatment by applying it to the study of electronic structures of the Goldberg type-II fullerenes, C-80, C-180, C-320, C-500 and C-980 within the Huckel tight-binding framework. The results, in terms of the factor characteristic polynomial (or the subspectrum) for each category of irreducible representation, are presented for these giant molecules.

Abstract:Very large carbon fullerenes and tubes have almost everywhere the structure of a planar hexagonal lattice. The spectrum of such a Hückel Hamiltonian is obtained in closed form in the present paper, for the case where single and double bonds have the same Hückel couplings. For the case where single and double bonds have different Hückel couplings, the problem is treated for some specific bond arrangements.

Abstract:The eigenvalue problem of Mickel matrix including next nearest interaction has been dealt with using graphic method as well as difference equation method respe etively.In difference equation approach, a parametric form of equation (10) is obtained and both the coponents of the molecular orbitals Cn and energy levels x have been written formally out as formulas (11) and (13). With large n and small eta (|eta| < 1) the secular equation can be approximated by eq. (16) from which the Taylor expansion (18) of theta in terms of q can be derived. In graphic approach both the characteristic polynomial P-N (x, n) and the C-n(x) are expanded in powers of q by means of theorems[i] published previously.When |eta|<1 the secular equa tion is reasonably approximated by eq. (32) where terms higher than eta(3) have been neglected. Thus a Taylor expansion of x can be formulated as (34). It is easily seen that both approaches are conformed to each other.As an application of the present results, the role of the next nearest interac tion in linear polyene has been investigated in detail where a simple numerical analysis has been done,We see that the next nearest interaction changes the energe levels somewhat, however, the HOMO-LUMO gap Delta epsilon(F), the total energy of electrons E, and the bond orders are almost kept unchanged. Only the wavefunctions are influenced which in turn makes the charge density un-uniform, as a result, ter minal wave and a charge density wave (CDW) could be predicted.

Abstract:Utilizing the icosahedral symmetry of the C60 molecule by amalgamating two methods, we solve the vibrational eigenfrequency problem for carbon-60 to obtain exact algebraic expressions for the characteristic polynomials of the vibration. Abstract:The recursion method is applied to study the electronic structure of a neutral C 60 molecule by numerically computing the density of states (DOS). A tight-binding Hamiltonian which considers the s and p valence electrons of carbon is used, and the coupling between orbitals is described by Harrison’s hopping formula. We obtain the overall molecular energy spectrum. The sequence orders and the degeneracies of π state levels, obtained when considering a mixture of the orbitals, agree well with those from the analytical method. We find that the inclusion of a nonzero next-nearest-neighbor hopping and even the inclusion of a nonzero next-next-nearest-neighbor hopping do not destroy icosahedral symmetry.

Abstract:The discretized Bethe-Salpeter eigenvalue problem arises in the Green's function evaluation in many body physics and quantum chemistry. Discretization leads to a matrix eigenvalue problem for $H \in \mathbb{C}^{2n\times 2n}$ with a Hamiltonian-like structure. After an appropriate transformation of $H$ to a standard symplectic form, the structure-preserving doubling algorithm, originally for algebraic Riccati equations, is extended for the discretized Bethe-Salpeter eigenvalue problem. Potential breakdowns of the algorithm, due to the ill condition or singularity of certain matrices, can be avoided with a double-Cayley transform or a three-recursion remedy. A detailed convergence analysis is conducted for the proposed algorithm, especially on the benign effects of the double-Cayley transform. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the efficiency and structure-preserving nature of the algorithm.

Abstract:Hückel theory is an empirical quantum chemical method that allows students to solve the secular equations using pen-and-paper. Usually simple hydrocarbons are considered for this exercise, which might not be that inspiring to students. In this work, we present basic Python code to solve this eigenvalue problem and apply it successfully to molecular motors. It is demonstrated that Hückel theory can qualitatively predict the red-shifting of the excitation wavelength upon substituting the aromatic core of a molecular motor. The Hückel calculated frontier molecular orbitals agree well with density functional theory.

Abstract:The coset space treatment of the molecular electronic dynamics is demonstrated in which Huckel orbitals are merely special points in the complicated, multi-dimensional manifolds. The results for the propenyl and cyclo-propenyl systems with degenerate site energies show that for symmetric inter-site couplings, the dynamics is periodic while for asymmetric couplings, it can be irregular or chaotic. Other initial conditions besides the Huckel parameters are considered with results discussed. Though sample calculations are limited to systems of one and two electrons in three orbitals, the conclusions about the chaotic universality in molecular electronic dynamics are drawn.

Complex Ground-State and Excitation Energies in Coupled-Cluster Theory

Abstract:Since in coupled-cluster (CC) theory ground-state and excitation energies are eigenvalues of a non-Hermitian matrix, these energies can in principle take on complex values. In this paper we discuss the appearance of complex energy values in CC calculations from a mathematical perspective. We analyze the behaviour of the eigenvalues of Hermitian matrices that are perturbed (in a non-Hermitian manner) by a real parameter. Based on these results we show that for CC calculations with real-valued Hamiltonian matrices the ground-state energy generally takes a real value. Furthermore, we show that in the case of real-valued Hamiltonian matrices complex excitation energies only occur in the context of conical intersections. In such a case, unphysical consequences are encountered such as a wrong dimension of the intersection seam, large numerical deviations from full configuration-interaction (FCI) results, and the square-root-like behaviour of the potential surfaces near the conical intersection. In the case of CC calculations with complex-valued Hamiltonian matrix elements, it turns out that complex energy values are to be expected for ground and excited states when no symmetry is present. We confirm the occurrence of complex energies by sample calculations using a six-state model and by CC calculations for the H2O molecule in a strong magnetic field. We furthermore show that symmetry can prevent the occurrence of complex energy values. Lastly, we demonstrate that in most cases the real part of the complex energy values provides a very good approximation to the FCI energy.

Abstract:We report full-dimensional converged quantum mechanical calculations of highly excited vibrational (J=0) energy levels of acetylene (HCCH) up to 13,000 cm−1 above the zero-point-energy level. The calculations were carried out using the Lanczos algorithm and a mixed basis/grid representation for the six-dimensional wavefunction. Both the parity and diatomic exchange symmetry were adapted in the calculation. Results on two potential energy surfaces were obtained and compared with both experimental and previous theoretical results.

Eigenvalues and eigenvectors of complex Hadamard matrices

Abstract:Characterizing the $6\times 6$ complex Hadamard matrices (CHMs) is an open problem in linear algebra and quantum information. In this paper, we investigate the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of CHMs. We show that any $n\times n$ CHM with dephased form has two constant eigenvalues $\pm\sqrt{n}$ and has two constant eigenvectors. We obtain the maximum numbers of identical eigenvalues of $6\times 6$ CHMs with dephased form and we extend this result to arbitrary dimension. We also show that there is no $6\times 6$ CHM with four identical eigenvalues. We conjecture that the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of $6\times 6$ CHMs will lead to the complete classification of $6\times 6$ CHMs.

Computing the k-th Eigenvalue of Symmetric $H^2$-Matrices

Abstract:The numerical solution of eigenvalue problems is essential in various application areas of scientific and engineering domains. In many problem classes, the practical interest is only a small subset of eigenvalues so it is unnecessary to compute all of the eigenvalues. Notable examples are the electronic structure problems where the $k$-th smallest eigenvalue is closely related to the electronic properties of materials. In this paper, we consider the $k$-th eigenvalue problems of symmetric dense matrices with low-rank off-diagonal blocks. We present a linear time generalized LDL decomposition of $\mathcal{H}^2$ matrices and combine it with the bisection eigenvalue algorithm to compute the $k$-th eigenvalue with controllable accuracy. In addition, if more than one eigenvalue is required, some of the previous computations can be reused to compute the other eigenvalues in parallel. Numerical experiments show that our method is more efficient than the state-of-the-art dense eigenvalue solver in LAPACK/ScaLAPACK and ELPA. Furthermore, tests on electronic state calculations of carbon nanomaterials demonstrate that our method outperforms the existing HSS-based bisection eigenvalue algorithm on 3D problems.

Abstract:Working in a subspace with dimensionality much smaller than the dimension of the full Hilbert space, we deduce exact 4-particle ground states in 2D samples containing hexagonal repeat units and described by Hubbard type of models. The procedure identifies first a small subspace ${\cal{S}}$ in which the ground state $|\Psi_g\rangle$ is placed, than deduces $|\Psi_g\rangle$ by exact diagonalization in ${\cal{S}}$. The small subspace is obtained by the repeated application of the Hamiltonian $\hat H$ on a carefully chosen starting wave vector describing the most interacting particle configuration, and the wave vectors resulting from the application of $\hat H$, till the obtained system of equations closes in itself. The procedure which can be applied in principle at fixed but arbitrary system size and number of particles, is interesting by its own since provides exact information for the numerical approximation techniques which use a similar strategy, but apply non-complete basis for ${\cal{S}}$. The diagonalization inside ${\cal{S}}$ provides an incomplete image about the low lying part of the excitation spectrum, but provides the exact $|\Psi_g\rangle$. Once the exact ground state is obtained, its properties can be easily analyzed. The $|\Psi_g\rangle$ is found always as a singlet state whose energy, interestingly, saturates in the $U \to \infty$ limit. The unapproximated results show that the emergence probabilities of different particle configurations in the ground state present "Zittern" (trembling) characteristics which are absent in 2D square Hubbard systems. Consequently, the manifestation of the local Coulomb repulsion in 2D square and honeycomb types of systems presents differences, which can be a real source in the differences in the many-body behavior.

Abstract:New algorithms for iterative diagonalization procedures that solve for a small set of eigen-states of a large matrix are described. The performance of the algorithms is illustrated by calculations of low and high-lying ionized and electronically excited states using equation-of-motion coupled-cluster methods with single and double substitutions (EOM-IP-CCSD and EOM-EE-CCSD). We present two algorithms suitable for calculating excited states that are close to a specified energy shift (interior eigenvalues). One solver is based on the Davidson algorithm, a diagonalization procedure commonly used in quantum-chemical calculations. The second is a recently developed solver, called the Generalized Preconditioned Locally Harmonic Residual (GPLHR) method. We also present a modification of the Davidson procedure that allows one to solve for a specific transition. The details of the algorithms, their computational scaling, and memory requirements are described. The new algorithms are implemented within the EOM-CC suite of methods in the Q-Chem electronic structure program. (c) 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
