The discovery provides valid means to predict and diagnose the rotor crack's faults. The conclusion is that the EMD-based method is very useful in the field of rotor crack detection.

Abstract:An index was developed based on energy for evaluating the end effect of LMD.The end effects of LMD and EMD（empirical mode decomposition） were compared.Because the envelop definition was different,in LMD the undefined envelop near border was shorter than that in EMD.LMD end effect is not as seriously as EMD.A mirror extension method was developed to reduce the end effect.The simulation results are quite good.LMD is applied in cracked rotor diagnosis,and the experimental results are also quite good.

Abstract:Multi-fault diagnosis of rotor systems is a topical issue in the research of rotor dynamics. Empirical mode decomposition (EMD) has been introduced in fault diagnosis of rotor systems, which has proved to be usable and efficient in single fault diagnosis of a rotor system. However, in multi-fault diagnosis of a rotor system, because of the existence of a high-frequency fault signal, EMD is not as powerful as the diagnosis of a single fault in dealing with the decomposition of multi-faults. In this paper, differential-based empirical mode decomposition (DEMD) is introduced into multi-fault diagnosis of a rotor system. The analysis consequences show that the combination of any two faults among crack, rub-impact and pedestal looseness in multi-fault diagnosis can be decomposed successfully and efficiently under the application of the DEMD method, which is also more accurate and precise than the traditional EMD method.
Detecting a Cracked Rotor with HHT-based Time-Frequency Representation

Abstract:During the Hilbert-Huang transformation (HHT), time-series data are firstly decomposed into several components with different time scale (i.e. intrinsic mode function, IMF), using the empirical mode decomposition (EMD). Then, the Hilbert transformation is applied to every IMF. As a result, the HHT spectrum of the data is constructed. In this paper, the HHT-based time-frequency representation was used for fault detection of rotor crack. On the basis of explaining the HHT-based representation in details, a simulated deep crack in a rotor was researched using this method. Experimental results showed that the HHT-based method can correctly represent the phase-modulation phenomenon excited by the torsional vibration from the deep crack, and effectively detect the crack fault, which implies great potential of the HHT-based time-frequency method in fault diagnosis of rotor system.

Abstract:Empirical mode decomposition (EMD) is a self-adaptive analysis method for nonlinear and non-stationary signals. It may decompose a complicated signal into a collection of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) based on the local characteristic time scale of the signal. The EMD method has attracted considerable attention and been widely applied to fault diagnosis of rotating machinery recently. However, it cannot reveal the signal characteristic information accurately because of the problem of mode mixing. To alleviate the mode mixing problem occurring in EMD, ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) is presented. With EEMD, the components with truly physical meaning can be extracted from the signal. Utilizing the advantage of EEMD, this paper proposes a new EEMD-based method for fault diagnosis of rotating machinery. First, a simulation signal is used to test the performance of the method based on EEMD. Then, the proposed method is applied to rub-impact fault diagnosis of a power generator and early rub-impact fault diagnosis of a heavy oil catalytic cracking machine set. Finally, by comparing its application results with those of the EMD method, the superiority of the proposed method based on EEMD is demonstrated in extracting fault characteristic information of rotating machinery.

Abstract:Empirical mode decomposition (EMD) has been widely used in the fault detection of rotating machineries. However, the deviation of the local extrema can decline the decomposition performance of the conventional EMD. This paper proposes a fault detection strategy based on the doubly iterative empirical mode decomposition (DIEMD), where the local extrema are fixed during the sifting process. This strategy combines the DIEMD to obtain decomposed intrinsic mode functions (IMFs), correlation analysis to select the representative IMF and envelope spectrum analysis to extract the fault feature frequency. The decomposition performance of the DIEMD was validated through the dual signal analysis. A numerical simulation and experimental investigations on four fault cases (the bearing with the inner race and outer race fault, the gear with broken teeth and the piston pump with cylinder block fault) of rotating machineries were carried out. The amplitude enhancement index (AEI) was defined as an indicator of the performance improvement. Results showed that the proposed strategy is applicable and effective for the fault detection of rotating machineries with AEI being 17.8%, 8.6%, 23.0%, 19.0% and 4.1%, respectively. Improved High Resolution Estimation Approach for Rotor Fault Diagnosis

Abstract:An improved high resolution fault diagnostic approach is presented, which contains two parts. First, a new time-frequency analysis named self-commissioning short time zoom matrix pencil method has been proposed. The analysis has high computing efficiency and maintains high spectral resolution, and it is completely free of human maneuver in dealing with nonstationary and quasi-stationary operating conditions. Vast estimates can be generated from a very finite length of measured data. Second, a feature extraction analysis is presented to settle the common problem of high resolution spectral approaches in quasi-stationary operating condition, where noise, fluctuations of loads and rotor speed contribute to judgement discrepancy or failure in diagnosis results. The feature extraction analysis provides approximately unbiased fault-related frequencies and sideband amplitudes by introducing Monte Carlo method and specific distribution fitting. The entire approach has been validated on interior permanent magnet motors with different degrees of rotor eccentricity in experiments.
Fault Diagnosis of Demountable Disk-Drum Aero-Engine Rotor Using Customized Multiwavelet Method

Abstract:The demountable disk-drum aero-engine rotor is an important piece of equipment that greatly impacts the safe operation of aircraft. However, assembly looseness or crack fault has led to several unscheduled breakdowns and serious accidents. Thus, condition monitoring and fault diagnosis technique are required for identifying abnormal conditions. Customized ensemble multiwavelet method for aero-engine rotor condition identification, using measured vibration data, is developed in this paper. First, customized multiwavelet basis function with strong adaptivity is constructed via symmetric multiwavelet lifting scheme. Then vibration signal is processed by customized ensemble multiwavelet transform. Next, normalized information entropy of multiwavelet decomposition coefficients is computed to directly reflect and evaluate the condition. The proposed approach is first applied to fault detection of an experimental aero-engine rotor. Finally, the proposed approach is used in an engineering application, where it successfully identified the crack fault of a demountable disk-drum aero-engine rotor. The results show that the proposed method possesses excellent performance in fault detection of aero-engine rotor. Moreover, the robustness of the multiwavelet method against noise is also tested and verified by simulation and field experiments.
Adaptive Matrix Pencil Method for Mixed Rotor Faults Diagnosis

Abstract:In this paper, matrix pencil (MP) algorithm is comprehensively treated for the diagnosis of IM rotor faults. It requires a short length of current data and has a strong ability to eliminate noise. However, the main defect of MP is that the threshold in its singular value truncation needs trial and error and is subjected to operating conditions. To solve the problem, an adaptive threshold auto-tuning method based on information entropy is presented. Then an adaptive MP methodology is developed for detecting mixed rotor faults, including bar breakages and rotor eccentricities without frequency leakage. Experimental results have validated the effectiveness under different operating speeds and load conditions. The auto-adjusted truncation threshold is well adapted to different operating conditions and the frequency accuracy of the identified fault characteristics is high at most points of interest. Clear features of IM mixed rotor faults can be revealed by the proposed technique.
EMD Boundary Processing Method and Its Application to Friction Fault Diagnosis of Rotor System

Abstract:In order to solve the boundary distortion problem in the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) method, a novel boundary processing method using a cosine window is proposed. The cosine window is firstly defined that its values equal to 1 in middle of the window and reduce according to the laws of cosine/sine functions in both ends. Secondly, the analyzed signal is preprocessed by multiplying with the defined window, so that the amplitudes of the signal remain in middle and reduce in both ends. Lastly, EMD method is used to analyze the preprocessed signal. With the proposed method, the boundary distortion can be controlled in ends of the signal and the middle component can be correctly decomposed. The results show that the proposed method can effectively decrease the boundary distortion of EMD and is useful in friction fault diagnosis of rotor system.

Abstract:For vibration signal generated by rubbing fault in rotary machinery including the single-point rubbing and the partial rubbing, multi-component harmonic frequencies are presented.An ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) method was introduced to resolve the difficulty of multi-component fault feature extraction of rubbing fault.The rubbing fault signals created by simulation were decomposed clearly into different single frequency data by using EEMD method.The vibration signals from experiment rig of rub-impact rotor were then analyzed under different directions rubbing, which include in horizontal, in vertical, in horizontal and vertical at the same time.The vibration strength belonged to different fault frequency in the frequency spectrum was obtained from the intrinsic mode function (IMF) based on EEMD respectively.The analysis results of the rubbing signals indicate that the multiple features can be better extracted with the EEMD, and is effective in analysis and recognition of rubbing fault.

Abstract:Demodulation is an available method for mechanical diagnoses, and a demodulation technique based on improved local mean decomposition (LMD) is proposed in this paper. A method of boundary process and a strategy for determining the step size of moving average are presented to improve the LMD algorithm. Instantaneous amplitude (IA) and instantaneous frequency (IF) of the signal can be computed independently of Hilbert transform using the improved LMD method. A well-constructed description of the derived IA and IF is given in the form of instantaneous time-frequency spectrum (ITFS) which preserves both the time and frequency information simultaneously. Results of three synthetic signals indicate that this proposed method is the best demodulation approach to extracting the all-round carrier and modulated components as well as the accurate IF, compared with Hilbert-Huang transform and stationary wavelet transform. The validity of the technique is then demonstrated on a real rotor system of a gas turbine with rub-impact fault. Due to the opposite friction during operation, the transient fluctuations of the IF of the fundamental harmonic component are successfully identified in the ITFS. In addition, we find that the proposed technique is more effective and sensitive than other methods in detecting sub-harmonics and FM components contained in the rub-impact signals. Thus the present method is powerful in the analysis of modulated signals and is an effective tool for the detection of rub-impact faults.

Abstract:An improved EEMD approach is introduced in this paper based on automatically obtaining the adding white noise amplitude and the ensemble number according to different analyzing signal characteristics. The adding white noise affects decomposition effect is researched in detail, a criterion of adding white noise in EEMD is established, and the improved EEMD algorithm is described. Simulated signals demonstrate the effectiveness of the improved EEMD in diagnosing the faults of rotating machinery. The improved EEMD is successfully applied to an early rub-impact fault detection of machine unit for catalytic cracking of heavy oil, with the fault reason being analyzed in detail. A gear fault detection of hot strip finishing mills is also analyzed utilizing the improved EEMD method. The results show that the improved EEMD can obtain more precise diagnosis results than the original EMD and FFT spectrum.

Abstract:Induction machines (IMs) are commonly used in various industrial sectors. It is essential to recognize IM defects at their earliest stage so as to prevent machine performance degradation and improve production quality and safety. This work will focus on IM broken rotor bar (BRB) fault detection, as BRB fault could generate extra heating, vibration, acoustic noise, or even sparks in IMs. In this paper, a modified empirical mode decomposition (EMD) technique, or MEMD, is proposed for BRB fault detection using motor current signature analysis. A smart sensor-based data acquisition (DAQ) system is developed by our research team and is used to collect current signals wirelessly. The MEMD takes several processing steps. Firstly, correlation-based EMD analysis is undertaken to select the most representative intrinsic mode function (IMF). Secondly, an adaptive window function is suggested for spectral operation and analysis to detect the BRB fault. Thirdly, a new reference function is proposed to generate the fault index for fault severity diagnosis analytically. The effectiveness of the proposed MEMD technique is verified experimentally.

Abstract:The fault of broken rotor bars in a three-phase induction motor is diagnosed by using the wavelet multi-resolution analysis in this paper. Daubechies wavelet is selected as the wavelet base, and the wavelet coefficient is obtained from the wavelet transform of the current signal of the faulty induction motor. The wavelet reconstruction of a single branch is then processed. This is the signal in each frequency branch as a function of time. A rotor fault in the induction motor is clearly identified from the distinguishing current characteristics on the high frequency branch, compared with the no fault condition.

Abstract:Early crack faults will introduce subtle local changes in the whole rotor system, which may bring difficulties to the fault detection process due to external disturbing factors. Meanwhile, judging the damaged position of rotor systems might be tough only through displacement or velocity. To overcome these issues, the harmonic balance-energy power flow analysis (HB-EPFA) is presented to investigate the rotor system with a transverse crack. Besides, a novel indicator (Time-averaged power flow) is proposed to evaluate the crack faults. For the energy characteristic analysis, the cracked rotor appears a special amplitude-jumping phenomenon, even in the case of shallow crack depth. The influence of crack depth on power flow values under different rotating speeds is obtained. Furthermore, the existence of cracks will lead to the rotation shaft presenting an abrupt energy-changing zone, which can be used to detect crack position. Relevant experiments are applied to validate the proposed detection method, and the experimental results agree with the theoretical analysis. The conclusions achieved in this paper can provide a reference for fault diagnosis of rotor systems in engineering practice.

Abstract:A Blind Source Separation (BSS) based new method for multi-fault diagnosis of rotors is presented. The statistic variable based decorrelation approach is employed to analyze the signals of the rotors with crack and rub-impact, crack and oil-whirl multi-faults, the typical features of the frequency spectrum of each fault of the rotor are separated out. The separated results show that (1) the BSS technique is helpful to the multi-fault diagnosis of a rotor system. (2) Due to the signals in the same direction at different locations of a rotor is correlative in some extent, if the observed points are not chosen properly, the separated accuracy will be affected greatly. The analysis shows that: for a one shaft rotor, choosing the signals in x, y direction at a same point of a rotor will lead to a better separated result. (3) If want to applying the BSS to practical diagnosis of rotor system, some efforts and works still need to be done.

Abstract:An energy analyzing method called the Impact Energy Model (IEM) is introduced to assess and diagnose the rub–impact fault of a rotor system. The main purpose of the model is to indicate the probability of rub–impact or the severity level of the fault. Utilizing the nonlinear predictive energy, an effective quantitative evaluation index IEM is obtained from the model. Some work has been done elsewhere to partly demonstrate the IEM through experiments. In this paper we mainly discuss the variation of the IEM index with the speed ratio Ω at different levels of damping ratio ξ. The stagnation point is discussed in detail which is important to the assessment for the probability or severity of a rub–impact fault. The influence of dynamic stiffness is discussed which may affect the assessment result of the IEM. Furthermore, a sensitive area of the rotor operating system is presented. The result shows that this sensitive area provides a reference for the operation and design of a rotor system.

Abstract:The diagnosis and prediction of rotor fault is a key problem of rotor dynamics. In this investigation, a Multiple Model Estimator (MME) based method for typical rotor fault diagnosis is proposed. On a test rotor, crack and misalignment faults are produced respectively. Aiming at the test rotor, the normal, crack and misalignment rotor models are built accordingly. Based on these rotor models, a MME built with Kalman filters is setup with considering different crack and misalignment parameters. Via the estimation of the measured responses of the test rotor by MME, the rotor faults are identified successfully. It is proved that this proposed method is effective in the fault diagnosis, especially in the early stage of rotor faults.
