Abstract:Objective To investigate the technique and clinical result of the application of expandable intramedullary nail system combined with elastic nail in treatment of fractures of tibia and fibula.Methods Fifteen patients with tibia and fibula fractures including 10 with closed fracture and 5 with open fracture(Gustilo gradeⅠ),were treated with expandable intramedullary nail system combined with elastic nail between March 2005 and August 2005.The series included 11 males and 4 females,with a mean age of 33.4 years old(range 19 to 43 years old).Tibia fracture in all the patients was treated with closed reduction and internal fixation.Results The surgical time ranged from 45 to 80 minutes(average 55minutes).The time of follow-up ranged from 10 to 12 months(mean 11 months).The average time of clinical and radiological union was 3 months.There were no postoperative complications.Conclusion The unreamed and no interlocking design significantly reduces the surgical time.Minimally invasive insertion of elastic nail may reduce the time of bone healing compared with conventional plate fixation.The application of expandable intramedullary nail system combined with elastic nail is effective to treat fractures of tibia and fibula and provides many advantages to conventional interlocking intramedullary nail.
