Abstract:We present a robust method, based only on measurements, to produce superconducting cluster states. The measurement of the current of a few parallel Josephson-junction qubits realizes a novel type of quantum-state selector. Using this selector, one can produce various quantum entangled states and also realize a controlled-NOT gate without requiring an exact control of the interqubit interactions. In particular, cluster states for quantum computation could be produced with only single-qubit measurements.

Abstract:The paradigm of measurement-based quantum computation opens new experimental avenues to realizing a quantum computer, and also deepens our understanding of quantum physics. Measurement-based quantum computation originates with a highly entangled universal resource state. For years, clusters states have been the only known universal resources. Surprisingly, a novel framework, namely quantum computation in correlation space, has opened a new route to implementing measurement-based quantum computation based on quantum states having entanglement properties, which differ from cluster states. Here, we report an experimental demonstration of every building block of such a model. With four-qubit and six-qubit states, which are not in the cluster-state category, we have realized a universal set of single-qubit rotations, two-qubit entangling gates and also Deutsch's algorithm. As well as being of fundamental interest, our experiment proves, in principle, the feasibility of universal measurement-based quantum computation without the use of cluster states, which represents a new approach towards the realization of a quantum computer.

Abstract:The universal quantum computation provides a new paradigm for information processing. One feasible approach is measurement-based one-way quantum computation utilizing cluster states. Generally, the generation of cluster states with different structures for implementing on-demand quantum computation needs different experimental setup, which limits its scalability. Here, the reconfigurable hexapartite cluster states created by postprocessing the quadrature information of hexapartite entangled state are demonstrated. Without altering the experimental layout, nine quantum correlated states with different structures, especially three cluster states, are implemented. In particular, such method can effectively reduce the excess noise introduced by creating cluster states under limited squeezing resources. This approach provides an avenue for realizing large-scale reconfigurable cluster states without changing the experimental architecture. The cluster states are important for implementing measurement based one-way quantum computation. Generally, its generation needs different experimental setup, which limits its scalability. In this article, the reconfigurable hexapartite cluster states created by postprocessing the quadrature information of hexapartite entangled state are demonstrated. This approach provides an avenue for realizing large-scale reconfigurable cluster states without changing the experimental architecture.image

Abstract:A quantum computer promises efficient processing of certain computational tasks that are intractable with classical computer technology. While basic principles of a quantum computer have been demonstrated in the laboratory, scalability of these systems to a large number of qubits, essential for practical applications such as the Shor algorithm, represents a formidable challenge. Most of the current experiments are designed to implement sequences of highly controlled interactions between selected particles (qubits), thereby following models of a quantum computer as a (sequential) network of quantum logic gates. Here we propose a different model of a scalable quantum computer. In our model, the entire resource for the quantum computation is provided initially in form of a specific entangled state (a so-called cluster state) of a large number of qubits. Information is then written onto the cluster, processed, and read out form the cluster by one-particle measurements only. The entangled state of the cluster thus serves as a universal substrate for any quantum computation. Cluster states can be created efficiently in any system with a quantum Ising-type interaction (at very low temperatures) between two-state particles in a lattice configuration.

Abstract:Highly entangled states called cluster states are a universal resource for measurement-based quantum computing (QC). Here we propose an efficient method for producing large cluster states using superconducting quantum circuits. We show that a large cluster state can be efficiently generated in just one step by turning on the interqubit coupling for a short time. Because the interqubit coupling is only switched on during the time interval for generating the cluster state, our approach is also convenient for preparing the initial state for each qubit and for implementing one-way QC via single-qubit measurements. Moreover, the cluster state is robust against parameter variations.

Abstract:This article is a short introduction to and review of the cluster-state model of quantum computation, in which coherent quantum information processing is accomplished via a sequence of single-qubit measurements applied to a fixed quantum state known as a cluster state. We also discuss a few novel properties of the model, including a proof that the cluster state cannot occur as the exact ground state of any naturally occurring physical system, and a proof that measurements on any quantum state which is linearly prepared in one dimension can be efficiently simulated on a classical computer, and thus are not candidates for use as a substrate for quantum computation.

Classically efficient regimes in measurement based quantum computation performed using diagonal two qubit gates and cluster measurements

Abstract:In a recent work <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2201.07655v2" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2201.07655v2">arXiv:2201.07655v2</a> we showed that there is a constant $\lambda >0$ such that it is possible to efficiently classically simulate a quantum system in which (i) qudits are placed on the nodes of a graph, (ii) each qudit undergoes at most $D$ diagonal gates, (iii) each qudit is destructively measured in the computational basis or bases unbiased to it, and (iv) each qudit is initialised within $\lambda^{-D}$ of a diagonal state according to a particular distance measure. In this work we explicitly compute $\lambda$ for any two qubit diagonal gate, thereby extending the computation of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2201.07655v2" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2201.07655v2">arXiv:2201.07655v2</a> beyond CZ gates. For any finite degree graph this allows us to describe a two parameter family of pure entangled quantum states (or three parameter family of thermal states) which have a non-trivial classically efficiently simulatable "phase" for the permitted measurements, even though other values of the parameters may enable ideal cluster state quantum computation. The main the technical tool involves considering separability in terms of "cylindrical" sets of operators. We also consider whether a different choice of set can strengthen the algorithm, and prove that they are optimal among a broad class of sets, but also show numerically that outside this class there are choices that can increase the size of the classically efficient regime.

Abstract:Measurement based quantum computation, which requires only single particle measurements on a universal resource state to achieve the full power of quantum computing, has been recognized as one of the most promising models for the physical realization of quantum computers. Despite considerable progress in the past decade, it remains a great challenge to search for new universal resource states with naturally occurring Hamiltonians and to better understand the entanglement structure of these kinds of states. Here we show that most of the resource states currently known can be reduced to the cluster state, the first known universal resource state, via adaptive local measurements at a constant cost. This new quantum state reduction scheme provides simpler proofs of universality of resource states and opens up plenty of space to the search of new resource states.

Abstract:Harnessing quantum mechanics properties, quantum computers have the potential to outperform classical computers in many applications and are envisioned to affect various aspects of our society. Different approaches are being explored for building such computers. One of such potential approaches is Measurement based quantum computation (MBQC), introduced by Raussendorf and Briegel in 2001. In MBQC a large number of qubits are prepared in a highly entangled clusters, called cluster states. The required quantum computation is then performed by a sequence of measurements. Cluster states are being physically realized using continuous variables (CV) and discrete variables (DV) approaches. CV-based approaches can be further categorized as Frequency domain multiplexing (FDM), Time domain multiplexing (TDM), Spatial domain multiplexing (SDM) and hybrid. We discuss and compare these approaches in detail. We also discuss cluster states generation in DV and report some recent results where photons and superconducting qubits are used.

Abstract:Randomized benchmarking is routinely used as an efficient method for characterizing the performance of sets of elementary logic gates in small quantum devices. In the measurement-based model of quantum computation, logic gates are implemented via single-site measurements on a fixed universal resource state. Here we adapt the randomized benchmarking protocol for a single qubit to a linear cluster state computation, which provides partial, yet efficient characterization of the noise associated with the target gate set. Applying randomized benchmarking to measurement-based quantum computation exhibits an interesting interplay between the inherent randomness associated with logic gates in the measurement-based model and the random gate sequences used in benchmarking. We consider two different approaches: the first makes use of the standard single-qubit Clifford group, while the second uses recently introduced (non-Clifford) measurement-based 2-designs, which harness inherent randomness to implement gate sequences.

Abstract:We propose two deterministic secure quantum communication (DSQC) protocols employing three-qubit GHZ-like states and five-qubit Brown states as quantum channels for secure transmission of information in units of two bits and three bits using multipartite teleportation schemes developed here. In these schemes, the sender's capability in selecting quantum channels and the measuring bases leads to improved qubit efficiency of the protocols.

Abstract:We present a new framework for assessing the power of measurement-based quantum computation (MBQC) on short-range entangled symmetric resource states, in spatial dimension one. It requires fewer assumptions than previously known. The formalism can handle finitely extended systems (as opposed to the thermodynamic limit), and does not require translation-invariance. Further, we strengthen the connection between MBQC computational power and string order. Namely, we establish that whenever a suitable set of string order parameters is non-zero, a corresponding set of unitary gates can be realized with fidelity arbitrarily close to unity.

Abstract:The Measurement Based Quantum Computation (MBQC) model achieves universal quantum computation by employing projective single qubit measurements with classical feedforward on a highly entangled multipartite cluster state. Rapid advances in improving scalability of quantum computing systems have enabled the generation of large cluster states for implementing MBQC on various platforms. This review focuses on three such efforts, each utilizing a different quantum computing technology viz., superconducting qubits, trapped ion qubits and squeezed photon states. MBQC is being increasingly employed on optical platforms which can generate large entangled resource states but lack the ability to perform deterministic entangling gates.
Resource-efficient photonic quantum computation with high-dimensional cluster states

Abstract:Quantum computers can revolutionize science and technology, but their realization remains challenging across all platforms. A promising route to scalability is photonic measurement-based quantum computation, where single-qubit measurements on large cluster states, together with feedforward, enable fault-tolerant quantum computation. However, generating large cluster states at high rates is notoriously difficult, as detection probabilities drop exponentially with the number of photons comprising the state. We tackle this challenge by encoding multiple qubits on each photon through high-dimensional spatial encoding, generating cluster states with over nine qubits at a rate of 100Hz. Additionally, we demonstrate that high-dimensional encoding substantially reduces the computation duration by enabling instantaneous feedforward between qubits encoded in the same photon. Our findings pave the way for resource-efficient measurement-based quantum computation using high-dimensional entanglement.

Abstract:Obtaining the density matrix that fully describes a quantum system is central to quantum science. Recently, the technique of "direct measurement" has been proposed to characterize a quantum state in situ; however, all the existing schemes require sequential weak and strong measurements, which strongly limits their practical application. Here, we present an efficient scheme for directly measuring arbitrary quantum matrix elements with only one strong measurement or weak measurement on each qudit. Our scheme is experimentally feasible for the direct measurement of arbitrary quantum states; in particular, multiparticle quantum entangled states. This scheme has applications in the characterization of large-scale quantum systems.

Abstract:Fermions, as a major class of quantum particles, provide platforms for quantum information processing beyond the possibilities of spins or bosons which have been studied more extensively. One particularly interesting model to study, in view of recent progress in manipulating ultracold fermion gases, is the fermionic version of measurement-based quantum computation (MBQC), which implements full quantum computation with only single site measurements on a proper fermionic many-body resource state. However, it is not known which fermionic states can be used as the resource states for MBQC and how to find them. In this paper, we generalize the framework of spin MBQC to fermions. In particular, we provide a general formalism to construct many-body entangled fermion resource states for MBQC based on the fermionic projected entangled pair state representation. We give a specific fermionic state which enables universal MBQC and demonstrate that the non-locality inherent in fermion systems can be properly taken care of with suitable measurement schemes. Such a framework opens up possibilities of finding MBQC resource states which can be more readily realized in the lab.

Abstract:We introduce a general scheme for sequential one-way quantum computation where static systems with long-living quantum coherence (memories) interact with moving systems that may possess very short coherence times. Both the generation of the cluster state needed for the computation and its consumption by measurements are carried out simultaneously. As a consequence, effective clusters of one spatial dimension fewer than in the standard approach are sufficient for computation. In particular, universal computation requires only a one-dimensional array of memories. The scheme applies to discrete-variable systems of any dimension as well as to continuous-variable ones, and both are treated equivalently under the light of local complementation of graphs. In this way our formalism introduces a general framework that encompasses and generalizes in a unified manner some previous system-dependent proposals. The procedure is intrinsically well suited for implementations with atom-photon interfaces.

Surprisingly, a novel framework namely quantum computation in correlation space has opened new routes to construct quantum states possessing entanglement properties different from cluster states while still retaining the universality for measurement-based quantum computing. The scheme not only offers more flexibility to prepare universal resources for quantum computation, but also provides a different perspective to study the fundamental problem regarding what are the essential features responsible for the speedup of quantum computers over classical devices. Here we report an experimental realization of every building block of the model of measurement-based quantum computation in correlation space. In the experiment, we prepare a four-qubit and a six-qubit state, which are proved different from cluster states through two-point correlation functions and the single site entropy of the qubits. With such resources, we have demonstrated a universal set of single-qubit rotations, two-qubit entangling gates and further Deutsch's algorithm. Besides being of fundamental interest, our experiment proves in-principle the feasibility of universal measurement-based quantum computation without cluster states, which represents a new approach towards the realization of a quantum computer.
Efficient classical simulation of cluster state quantum circuits with alternative inputs

Abstract:We provide new examples of pure entangled systems related to cluster state quantum computation that can be efficiently simulated classically. In cluster state quantum computation input qubits are initialised in the `equator' of the Bloch sphere, C Z gates are applied, and finally the qubits are measured adaptively using Z measurements or measurements of cos ⁡ ( θ ) X + sin ⁡ ( θ ) Y operators. We consider what happens when the initialisation step is modified, and show that for lattices of finite degree D , there is a constant λ ≈ 2.06 such that if the qubits are prepared in a state that is within λ − D in trace distance of a state that is diagonal in the computational basis, then the system can be efficiently simulated classically in the sense of sampling from the output distribution within a desired total variation distance. In the square lattice with D = 4 for instance, λ − D ≈ 0.056 . We develop a coarse grained version of the argument which increases the size of the classically efficient region. In the case of the square lattice of qubits, the size of the classically simulatable region increases in size to at least around ≈ 0.070 , and in fact probably increases to around ≈ 0.1 . The results generalise to a broader family of systems, including qudit systems where the interaction is diagonal in the computational basis and the measurements are either in the computational basis or unbiased to it. Potential readers who only want the short version can get much of the intuition from figures 1 to 3.
