Abstract:In the art museum, lighting plays a crucial role in visitors' understanding and appreciation of exhibits. This paper mainly explores the influence of different lighting mode (general lighting, accent lighting, and mixed lighting) and correlated color temperature (CCTs) (4000 K and 2700 K) changes on the observers' psychology to find the best lighting environment. Based on the simulation carried out at the National Museum of Western Art in Japan, we made six diverse lighting designs. 31 observers were invited to evaluate each scheme, and the results of subjective evaluation were analyzed by means of one-way analysis of variance and the paired sample T-test. According to the results of data analysis, suggestions can be given for art gallery lighting design. It is not recommended to use general lighting alone in art museums, and it is better to use mixed lighting. When the CCT is 4000 K, only accent lighting can be used. When the CCT is 2700 K, the mixed lighting effect is better.

Abstract:As to fine art museum that exhibits big wall works primarily,it is usually difficult to distinguish between gallery lighting and exhibit lighting.The surface material's spectrum information taken by reflected light will influence the artwork's colour perception.This article takes this as cut-in,uses spectrophotometer to measure material's spectral reflectance and calculates the reflected light spectrum according to measured data.This article does the comparation analysis between reflected light's colour temperature and colour rendering of gallery's regular surface materials eg.56 kinds of stone,10 kinds of wood and 4 kinds of fiberglas fabric.The conclusions reached by this article have the guidance meaning to the choice of the gallery's surface materials.

Abstract:This study is based on the survey data of Zhongshan Art Museum in Dalian. To investigate changes in the emotional response of visitors to various lighting conditions. The museum is divided into two areas: display space and non-display space. The optical parameters of each space and space are measured. Data analysis was used to evaluate the impact of museum interior lighting on visitors’ mood in different lighting environments. It is pointed out that the light intensity and the contrast of CCT, environment are the main viewpoints of the evaluation index. The degree of comfort of visitors in each space was discussed according to the scores of 11 emotional indicators. At the same time, the influence of illumination parameters on the mood of visitors was analyzed by investigating the illumination and color temperature in different scene modes, visual psychology of observer evaluation and so on. The range of illumination and color temperature that is most suitable for visitors is obtained.

Abstract:Recent years the subject of colour quality of LED lighting in museum was extensively studied. It was found that different experimental results can be effectively described as Comfort Zone in terms of illuminance and colour temperature of the museum illuminations. Work of updating colour rendering index for LED lighting can also be used for museum lighting applications. Recent studies on museum lighting and some related work are reviewed in this paper. Important recommendations about how to achieve high colour quality museum lighting are also given.

How Colour Qualities of LED Lightings in A Museum Affect the Visual Impacts of Paintings

Abstract:Colorful paintings were widely used to study the colour quality of museum LED lightings.Several psychophysical experiments were conducted in recent years, to study the colour appearance and the observer preference on paintings under LED lightings with various illuminance levels, colour temperatures, colour fidelity levels, and sizes and shapes of colour gamut.The results were compared with other researchers'' worldwide.The optimal colour temperature for museum lightings was found to be very culture dependent.In Asia, it was found between 3 000 K and 4 000 K.The colour fidelity and the colour gamut of LED lightings have significant effect on the visual perception on painting.It all points toward a spectrum tunable lighting system for illuminating fine art paintings.

Abstract:With respect to the light environment of the exhibition halls for Chinese calligraphy and painting works in the museums, the daylighting design in these display spaces have been studied, the key design factors, such as daylighting pattern, and arrangement of exhibits are examined and explored by field trips. Then, the display spaces are divided into diverse categories whose sky light environments are predicted by the demands of exhibits. Under changed daylighting situations, the daylight parameters, i.e., daylight factor (DF) and DF uniformity, discomfort glare index (DGI) and luminance distribution are calculated. Thus, the proper daylighting pattern and elements in the exhibition halls will be decided. The optimization strategies that optimize the parameters of daylighting patterns and elements are presented. The studies have shown that the daylighting quality will improved by the implement of optimal design, and good luminance environment in the calligraphy and painting exhibition halls are obtained.

Abstract:Lighting design for art exhibitions has a significant impact on the enjoyment and understanding of the displayed artworks. In particular, the selection of the light sources and the design of the museum space affect the visitors’ visual perceptions of the artworks and their color appearance. This project investigated some of the potential factors—the correlated color temperature (CCT) of the illumination, the overall color content of the painting and the lightness of its background—affecting a painting’s color appearance and appreciation in a museum setting. The study involved a survey conducted in the laboratory with both naïve observers and lighting experts. The CCT of the lighting was found to be the main factor affecting the painting’s appearance and the observers’ overall preference for the lighting arrangements, whereas the overall hue content of the painting and the background lightness had a minor influence. Furthermore, it has been found that the perceived brightness increases along with the CCT.

Abstract:In order to study the current situation and problems of cinema projection halls, through the survey questionnaire and practical measurement, it is concluded that: (1) there are many types of cinemas, and the light environment of cinema projection halls lacks relevant national norms and regulations; (2) Most of the screening halls are mainly direct lighting and warm light to meet the functional lighting, and only emergency lighting is reserved during the viewing process; (3) The brightness and brightness contrast of the cinema affect the visual comfort of the audience. In the light environment design of cinema projection hall, it is necessary to improve the environmental illumination, flexibly adjust the brightness of the screen, and improve the light environment of the cinema hall.

Abstract:The combination of Feng shui and lighting can create a yin and yang balanced light space, which will become the trend of lighting design in the new era. The suitable lighting environment is beneficial to the physical and mental health of the occupants. By collating and analyzing the theoretical system of Feng Shui, this paper maps the 1931 chromaticity diagram and the five elements, and then selects the appropriate light source to adjust the energy of the human body and the surrounding environment. The combination of traditional Chinese martial arts and modern lighting is a new kind of interdisciplinary research, which is of great significance for the harmonious between human and light.

Abstract:The quality of the indoor lighting environment in the reading space of the university library is essential for students' visual perception, emotional evaluation, and cognitive efficiency. The design of the lighting environment considering the change of natural light is one of the important development directions to improve the light environment quality of the reading room and meet the health requirements of students. This paper from the perspective of reading vision, emotion, and cognitive probes into the natural light environment lighting design, builds a reading lighting environment laboratory, using subjective evaluation, task performance, and physiological indicators of the measurement method, first analyses the weight of different indicators under different time, establish lighting environment comprehensive evaluation index I and artificial illumination and desktop illumination prediction model. The experimental results show that experimental results show that visual discomfort and clarity are the key factors in the early and later stages. In the transition phase, emotional indicators become particularly important. The model of dynamic lighting design scheme during 17:30-20:30 is: y = 227753.1746-900120.63492x+ 1179428.57142x2-512000x3, R2 = 0.99702; the fitting formula of desktop illumination in 17:30-20:30 period is: y = 566.666667-197.08995x + 158.73016x2-37.03704x3, R2 = 0.95238. The results aim to provide a theoretical basis for the design and optimization of dynamic lighting under natural light in the library reading room.

Abstract:Colour in a Chinese painting not only conveys cultural, historical, and philosophical concepts but also carries specific symbolic meanings and emotions, possessing a high level of artistic value. However, the sensitivity of Chinese paintings to light results in exhibition environments being characterised by low illuminance and low colour temperature. Therefore, accurately assessing colour preferences in Chinese paintings under such conditions is an issue that needs to be addressed. This study conducted simulated experiments in real museum exhibition halls, with 36 participants providing subjective evaluations of Chinese paintings, to explore the effects of various lighting parameters on colour preferences. Through statistical analysis and multiple linear regression, the relationship between lighting parameters and colour preferences in a Chinese painting was determined, and an evaluation model was established. This research outcome provides important mathematical tools for selecting appropriate lighting and developing dedicated lighting for Chinese paintings, ensuring the artistic inheritance of Chinese painting colours.

Abstract:This study investigated the main visual perceptions and the optimal LED lighting parameters for viewing museum paintings. Oil and gouache paintings seen under different LED illuminants were assessed using the categorical judgement method. It was found that visibility' and warmth' are the main perceptions for viewing paintings. The results showed that a correlated colour temperature around 3500K, a negative deviation of the target from the blackbody locus and a high colour rendering index can achieve satisfactory results. The difference between colour fidelity-based colour rendering indices and colour preference-based colour rendering indices for a museum application was also explored.

Abstract:To evaluate the lighting color preference on traditional Chinese paintings based on the spectral power distributions (SPDs) of light sources, an experiment to examine the color preference of 40 representative SPDs illuminating two typical traditional Chinese paintings was performed in a 1:1 simulated exhibition hall. By decomposing the data, the influence trend from the different narrowband spectra on the color preference was obtained, and two key spectra with a significant influence on the color preference were determined (WLP = 425 nm with FWHM = 20 nm and WLP = 525 nm with FWHM = 30 nm). With an evaluation model using the relative spectral areas of S425 and S525, the calculation of the lighting color preference for traditional Chinese painting illumination based on SPD was achieved. Our results could provide a mathematical tool for the comparison and selection of light sources for the illumination of traditional Chinese paintings and the development and design of specific light sources.
