On Characteristics of Ancient Chinese Religion

Abstract:Ancient Chinese religion is characterized by its formation under the circumstances of China's special natural and social environment,as well as unique cultural tradition.Polytheistic worship and polytheism in mutual tolerance constitute the first characteristic of ancient Chinese religion —— multi-faceted interdependence.The official religion advocated the unity between religious and political powers,which religious authorities followed the principle of political dominance over religious subordination,which constitutes the second characteristic of ancient Chinese religion —— political and religious interconnection.The secular concerns and morality-based oneness between Heaven(God) and Earth constitute the third characteristic of ancient Chinese religion —— secular pursuit and advocating of morality.These characteristics of ancient Chinese religion have exerted major and far-reaching impact on traditional Chinese politics,culture,ethics,ideology,and profound national psychological structure.
