Abstract:The paper studies optimal control problem described by higher order evolution differential inclusions (DFIs) with endpoint and state constraints. In the term of Euler-Lagrange type inclusion is derived sufficient condition of optimality for higher order DFIs. It is shown that the adjoint inclusion for the first order DFIs, defined in terms of locally adjoint mapping, coincides with the classical Euler-Lagrange inclusion. Then a duality theorem is proved, which shows that Euler-Lagrange inclusions are "duality relations" for both problems. At the end of the paper duality problems for third order linear and fourth order polyhedral DFIs are considered.

Abstract:Optimal control problem with incomplete and different integral time domains is a class of very common practical engineering problems. In traditional way, the integral items are transformed to the transient items and treated as artificial states to reduce the complexity of programming. However, its main disadvantage is time wasting for the considered problems. In this paper, an efficient computational method is therefore proposed for this type of problem, where the integral time domains can be either fixed or variable. By employing the control vector parameterization and a timescaling transformation, the original problem is converted to an approximate optimal parameter selection problem. Moreover, new gradient formulae for the cost and constraint functions are derived. With these gradient formulae, standard gradient-based optimization methods can be easily applied to solve the generated approximate problem. For illustration, three classical numerical examples are tested. The research results, which save 10–22 % of time, show the effectivity of the proposed approach.

There are three different forms of adjoint inclusions that appear in the most advanced necessary optimality conditions for optimal control problems involving differential inclusions: Euler–Lagrange inclusion (with partial convexification) [A. D. Ioffe, J. Optim. Theory Appl., 182 (2019), pp. 285–309], fully convexified Hamiltonian inclusion [F. H. Clarke, Mem. Amer. Math. Soc., 173 (2005), 816], and partially convexified Hamiltonian inclusion [P. D. Loewen and R. T. Rockafellar, SIAM J. Control Optim., 34 (1996), pp. 1496–1511], [A. D. Ioffe, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., 349 (1997), pp. 2871–2900], [R. B. Vinter, SIAM J. Control Optim., 52 (2014), pp. 1237–1250] (for convex-valued differential inclusions in the first two references). This paper addresses all three types of necessary conditions for problems with (in general) nonconvex-valued differential inclusions. The first of the two main theorems, with the Euler–Lagrange inclusion, is equivalent to the main result of [A. D. Ioffe, J. Optim. Theory Appl., 182 (2019), pp. 285–309] but proved in a substantially different and much more direct way. The second theorem contains conditions that guarantee necessity of both types of Hamiltonian conditions. It seems to be the first result of such a sort that covers differential inclusions with possibly unbounded values and contains the most recent results of [F. H. Clarke, Mem. Amer. Math. Soc., 173 (2005), 816] and [R. B. Vinter, SIAM J. Control Optim., 52 (2014), pp. 1237–1250] as particular cases. And again, the proof of the theorem is based on a substantially different approach.

Abstract:The stabilization of differential inclusions with Markovian jumping is discussed. A kind of uncertain Markovian jumping systems are modeled as differential inclusions with Markovian jumping. Based on the convex hull Lyapunov function, a kind of stochastical Lyapunov function is presented. The feedback control law is obtained to make the closed-loop system exponentially stable in the mean square. Finally, a simulation is given to show the effectiveness of this control design.

Abstract:Finite-time linear-quadratic control of partial differential-algebraic equations (PDAEs) is considered. The discussion is restricted to those that are radial with index $0$; this corresponds to a nilpotency degree of 1. We establish the existence of a unique minimizing optimal control. A projection is used to derive a system of differential Riccati-like equation coupled with an algebraic equation, yielding the solution of the optimization problem in a feedback form. This generalizes the well-known result for PDEs to this class of PDAEs. These equations and hence the optimal control can be calculated without construction of the projected PDAE. Finally, we provide numerical simulations to illustrate application of the theoretical results.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the optimization of the Mayer problem with hyperbolic differential inclusions of the Darboux type and duality. We use the discrete approximation method to get sufficient conditions of optimality for the convex problem given by Darboux differential inclusions and the polyhedral problem for a hyperbolic differential inclusion with state constraint. We formulate the adjoint inclusions in the Euler-Lagrange inclusion and Hamiltonian forms. Then, we construct the dual problem to optimal control problem given by Darboux differential inclusions with state constraint and prove so-called duality results. Moreover, we show that each pair of primal and dual problem solutions satisfy duality relations and that the optimal values in the primal convex and dual concave problems are equal. Finally, we establish the dual problem to the polyhedral Darboux problem and provide an example to demonstrate the main constructions of our approach.

Abstract:This paper studies (single-time and multitime) optimal control problems on a nonholonomic manifold (described either by the kernel of a Gibbs-Pfaff form or by the span of appropriate vector fields). For both descriptions we analyse: infinitesimal deformations and adjointness, single-time optimal control problems, multitime optimal control problem of maximizing a multiple integral functional, multitime optimal control problem of maximizing a curvilinear integral functional, Curvilinear functionals depending on curves, optimization of mechanical work on Riemannian manifolds. Also we prove that a nonholonomic system can be always controlled by uni-temporal or bi-temporal bang-bang controls.

Discrete approximations and optimality conditions for integro-differential inclusions

Abstract:This paper addresses a new class of generalized Bolza problems governed by nonconvex integro-differential inclusions with endpoint constraints on trajectories, where the integral terms are given in the general (with time-dependent integrands in the dynamics) Volterra form. We pursue here a threefold goal. First we construct well-posed approximations of continuous-time integro-differential systems by their discrete-time counterparts with showing that any feasible solution to the original system can be strongly approximated in the $W^{1,2}$-norm topology by piecewise-linear extensions of feasible discrete trajectories. This allows us to verify in turn the strong convergence of discrete optimal solutions to a prescribed local minimizer for the original problem. Facing intrinsic nonsmoothness of original integro-differential problem and its discrete approximations, we employ appropriate tools of generalized differentiation in variational analysis to derive necessary optimality conditions for discrete-time problems (which is our second goal) and finally accomplish our third goal to obtain necessary conditions for the original continuous-time problems by passing to the limit from discrete approximations. In this way we establish, in particular, a novel necessary optimality condition of the Volterra type, which is the crucial result for dynamic optimization of integro-differential inclusions.

Infeasible and Critically Feasible Optimal Control

Abstract:We consider optimal control problems involving two constraint sets: one comprised of linear ordinary differential equations with the initial and terminal states specified and the other defined by the control variables constrained by simple bounds. When the intersection of these two sets is empty, typically because the bounds on the control variables are too tight, the problem becomes infeasible. In this paper, we prove that, under a controllability assumption, the ``best approximation'' optimal control minimizing the distance (and thus finding the ``gap'') between the two sets is of bang--bang type, with the ``gap function'' playing the role of a switching function. The critically feasible control solution (the case when one has the smallest control bound for which the problem is feasible) is also shown to be of bang--bang type. We present the full analytical solution for the critically feasible problem involving the (simple but rich enough) double integrator. We illustrate the overall results numerically on various challenging example problems.

Abstract:An optimal control problem with a time-parameter is considered. The functional to be optimized includes the maximum over time-horizon reached by a function of the state variable, and so an $L^\infty$-term. In addition to the classical control function, the time at which this maximum is reached is considered as a free parameter. The problem couples the behavior of the state and the control, with this time-parameter. A change of variable is introduced to derive first and second-order optimality conditions. This allows the implementation of a Newton method. Numerical simulations are developed, for selected ordinary differential equations and a partial differential equation, which illustrate the influence of the additional parameter and the original motivation.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a new class of differential quasivariational-hemivariational inequalities of the elliptic type. The problem consists of a system coupling the Cauchy problem for an ordinary differential equation with the variational-hemivariational inequalities, unilateral constraints, and history-dependent operators. First, based on the Minty formulation and the continuity of the solution map of a parametrized quasivariational-hemivariational inequality, and a fixed point theorem for a history-dependent operator, we prove a result on the well-posedness. Next, we examine optimal control problems for differential quasivariational-hemivariational inequalities, including a time-optimal control problem and a maximum stay control problem, for which we show the existence of solutions. In all the optimal control problems, the system is controlled through a distributed and boundary control, a control in initial conditions, and a control that appears in history-dependent operators. Finally, we illustrate the results by considering a nonlinear controlled system for a time-dependent elliptic equation with unilateral constraints.

Abstract:In optimal control,sensitivity relations are usually understood as inclusions that identify the pair formed by the dual arc and the Hamiltonian, evaluated along the associated minimizing trajectory, as a suitable generalized gradient of the value function. In this paper, sensitivity relations are obtained for the Mayer problem associated with the differential inclusion $\dot x\in F(x)$ and applied to derive optimality conditions. Our first application concerns the maximum principle and consists in showing that a dual arc can be constructed for every element of the superdifferential of the final cost. As our second application, with every nonzero limiting gradient of the value function at some point $(t,x)$ we associate a family of optimal trajectories at $(t,x)$ with the property that families corresponding to distinct limiting gradients have empty intersection.

Topological Methods in Nonlinear Analysis

Abstract:In this paper, we are concerned with a generalized evolution dynamical system, called fractional differential variational-hemivariational inequality (FDVHVI, for short), which is composed of a nonlinear fractional evolution inclusion and a time-dependent mixed variational-hemivariational inequality in the framework of Banach spaces. The objective of this paper is four fold. The first one is to investigate the nonemptiness as well as the compactness of the mild solutions set to the FDVHVI. The second aim is to study the optimal control problems described by the FDVHVI. The third goal is to establish the well-posedness results of the FDVHVI, including the existence, uniqueness, and stability. Furthermore, the sensitivity analysis of a perturbed problem associated to the FDVHVI with respect to the initial state and the two parameters is also obtained. Finally, a comprehensive fractional model is given to illustrate the validity of our main results.

Abstract:We consider $H_{\infty}$-optimal state-feedback control of the class of linear Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) class, which admit a Partial Integral Equation (PIE) representation. While linear matrix inequalities are commonly used for optimal control of Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs), the absence of a universal state-space representation and suitable dual form prevents such methods from being applied to optimal control of PDEs. Specifically, for ODEs, the controller synthesis problem is defined in state-space, and duality is used to resolve the bilinearity of that synthesis problem. Recently, the PIE representation was proposed as a universal state-space representation for linear PDE systems. In this paper, we show that any PDE system represented by a PIE admits a dual PIE with identical stability and I/O properties. This result allows us to reformulate the stabilizing and optimal state-feedback control problems as convex optimization over the cone of positive Partial Integral (PI) operators. Operator inversion formulae then allow us to construct feedback gains for the original PDE system. The results are verified through application to several canonical problems in optimal control of PDEs.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider continuous dependence and optimal control of a dynamic elastic-viscoplastic contact model with Clarke subdifferential boundary conditions. Since the constitutive law of elastic-viscoplastic materials has an implicit expression of the stress field, the weak form of the model is an evolutionary hemivariational inequality coupled with an integral equation. By providing some equivalent weak formulations, we prove the continuous dependence of the solution on external forces and initial conditions in the weak topologies. Finally, the existence of optimal solutions to a boundary optimal control problem is established.

Abstract:Differential inclusions-based dynamic feedback neural network models are introduced to solve in real time nonsmooth convex optimization problems restricted on a closed convex subset of Rn. First,a differential inclusion-based dynamic feedback neural network model for solving unconstrained optimization problem is established, and its stability and convergence are investigated, then based on the preceding results and the method of successive approximation, differential inclusions-based dynamic feedback neural network models for solving in real time nonsmooth optimization problem on a closed convex subset are successively constructed, and its dynamical behavior and optimization capabilities are analyzed rigorously.
Optimal control for coupled sweeping processes under minimal assumptions

Abstract:In this paper, the study of nonsmooth optimal control problems (P) involving a controlled sweeping process with three main characteristics is launched. First, the sweeping sets C(t) are nonsmooth, unbounded, time-dependent, uniformly prox-regular, and satisfy minimal assumptions. Second, the sweeping process is coupled with a controlled differential equation. Third, joint-state endpoints constraint set S, including periodic conditions, is present. The existence and uniqueness of a Lipschitz solution for our dynamic is established, the existence of an optimal solution for our general form of optimal control is obtained, and the full form of the nonsmooth Pontryagin maximum principle for strong local minimizers in (P) is derived under minimal hypotheses. One of the novelties of this paper is the idea to work with a well-constructed problem corresponding to truncated sweeping sets and joint endpoint constraints that shares the same strong local minimizer as (P) and for which the exponential-penalty approximation technique can be developed using only the assumptions on (P).

Abstract:The current paper initially studies the optimal control of linear $\psi$-Hilfer fractional derivatives with state-dependent control constraints and optimal control for a particular type of cost functional. Then, we investigate the approximate controllability of the abstract fractional semilinear differential inclusion involving $\psi$-Hilfer fractional derivative in reflexive Banach spaces. It is known that the existence, uniqueness, optimal control, and approximate controllability of fractional differential equations or inclusions have been demonstrated for a similar type of fractional differential equations or inclusions with different fractional order derivative operators. Hence it has to research fractional differential equations with more general fractional operators which incorporate all the specific fractional derivative operators. This motivates us to consider the $\psi$-Hilfer fractional differential inclusion. We assume the compactness of the corresponding semigroup and the approximate controllability of the associated linear control system and define the control with the help of duality mapping. We observe that convexity is essential in determining the controllability property of semilinear differential inclusion. In the case of Hilbert spaces, there is no issue of convexity as the duality map becomes simply the identity map. In contrast to Hilbert spaces, if we consider reflexive Banach spaces, there is an issue of convexity due to the nonlinear nature of duality mapping. The novelty of this paper is that we overcome this convexity issue and establish our main result. Finally, we test our outcomes through an example.

Abstract:The paper deals with systems of ordinary differential equations containing in the right-hand side controls which are discontinuous in phase variables. These controls cause the occurrence of sliding modes. If one uses one of the well-known definitions of the solution of discontinuous systems, then the motion of an object while being on some surface can be described in terms of differential inclusions. With the help of the previously developed apparatus for solving differential inclusions, a method is constructed for finding the trajectories of a system moving in a such a mode. Since some of frequently used discontinuous controls contain nonsmooth functions of phase variables, the paper pays special attention to study the differential properties of such systems. At the end of the paper controls of a slightly different, in contrast to the classical, type are considered which have useful differential properties, and a method is constructed for solving systems with such controls considered both before hitting the required surface and moving in its vicinity.
