Abstract:With specimens from Wuming Zhuang Dialect,this paper addresses a new approach of categorizing the tones in disyllabic words in terms of functional loans and phonetics.Due to different functional loans of tones in disyllabic words,those functionally minor ones are tonally redundant,that is,they actually lose the tonal functions and hence are unstable in tonal values.As a result,they may be subjected to major merging.This paper applies an affinity propagation clustering of acoustic distribution space of the tones of disyllabic words in Wuming Zhuang, generalizes the actual distribution patterns of disyllabic tones,and conducts a discussion on the approach itself.

Abstract:Wee et al.propose that tone 3 changes to tone 1 before tone 2 or tone 4 in Tianjin dialect.With regards to these two third tone sandhi rules,the present paper conducts two experiments: an acoustic experiment and a perception experiment.In the acoustic experiment we find that the tone contours for disyllabic sequences of tone 3 and tone 1 can't be displayed clearly by the five-scale tonal system,but from the specific tone pitch values the differences are obvious.The results drawn from the following perception experiment we conducted reveal that the fine distinction between these two tones in dysyllabic phrases can be discerned by the native Tianjin speakers,and thus clearly shows that tone 3 does not undergo a categorical change to tone 1 when it precedes tone 2 or tone 4.

Abstract:Unlike most Indo-European languages, tone languages rely heavily on lexical tones (thereafter, tones) to distinguish word identity (Hu, Gao, Ma, & Yao, 2012). For example, Mandarin, the most widely spoken tone language, uses four tones to define word identity. Therefore, ma1 with a high-level tone means mother; ma2 with a rising tone means hemp; ma3 with a dipping tone means horse; and ma4 with a falling tone means to curse. Despite the fact that approximately 70% of the world’s languages are tone languages, tone acquisition still remains understudied (Yip, 2002). The present study examines 3-year-old Mandarin speakers’ ability to use tones in word learning. Tone sensitivity emerges early in infancy (Cheng et al., 2013). A recent study revealed tone discrimination in Mandarinand Cantonese-reared infants as young as 4 months of age (Yeung, Chen, & Werker, 2013). Research also showed that 9-month-old Mandarin-reared infants could discriminate Thai tones, whereas their English-reared counterparts failed to show such discrimination, suggesting that tone perception is shaped by language exposure (Mattock & Burnham, 2006). How do Mandarin-learning children acquire tones? Research has shown that Mandarin-English bilingual infants use tones to distinguish Mandarin words at 11 months of age (Singh & Foong, 2012). Wong, Schwartz, and Jenkin (2005) examined tone perception in Mandarin-speaking 3-year-olds, who were presented with tone minimal pairs (e.g., tang1 [soup] vs. tang2 [candy]) on a picture-name matching task. Children’s accuracy rate was as low as 69% when T3 was tested though they reliably perceived other tones. Abstract:Psychology of Music, Ahead of Print. In tone languages where pitch is used to distinguish word meanings, questions arise about how tonal pitch is preserved in singing. While most studies focus on tone-melody matching by examining pitch changes between tones/notes, the pitch change of tones realized within individual notes is less investigated. This article explores how singers realized tones when singing in Chaozhou, a Southern Chinese language with a complex tonal system. It used a Chaozhou song containing 10 tonal patterns to collect data from 34 Chaozhou singers. Results show that tones are realized to varying degrees when sung, and pitch range, pitch level, and neighboring pitch of tones appear to be influential factors. Vocal training affected the realization of falling tones /53/ and /42/ by reducing the pitch fall and also affected rising tone /23/ with a larger pitch change being found for non-professional singers than for professionals. However, the singers' experience of singing in Chaozhou did not greatly affect the tone realization. An effect of the metrical structure was only found for tones /53/ and /42/. In addition, tone sandhi affects tones /53/ and /21/. The analysis also hints at the potential effect of melodic intervals on the pitch change of tones when sung.

Abstract:Zhuokeji Rgyalrong has long been identified as 'atonal' or 'marginally tonal'. This paper presents a wealth of evidence from lexical distinctions and from a wide range of morphological constructions, establishing that Zhuokeji is by no means atonal, nor are tonal modifications restricted to a small range of uses. Instead, in addition to being employed to contrast lexical meanings, tones also serve as an essential device in the formation of all sorts of grammatical categories. This paper demonstrates that Zhuokeji Rgyalrong is a tone language that exhibits a privative system in which /HL/ contrasts with /circle divide/. The basic domain of the tonal contrast is the word, and the surface phonological representation of every word is sensitive to the morphological contexts it is situated in. With respect to typology of tone systems, Zhuokeji tone bears both "Asian" and "African" tonal properties.

Abstract:Abstract This paper is intended to investigate how the Dai Dialect speakers in Dehong Autonomous Prefecture perceive Mandarin tones. Therefore, identification and discrimination experiments were conducted of the four Mandarin tone continua with Dai Language speakers. The results suggested that the Dai Language speaker’s perception mode of T1-T2 and T2-T4 continua are Categorical Perception, but for T1-T3, T2-T3, T3-T4 and T1-T4 continua are not. These findings indicated that Dai language tone system does have a significant influence on participants’ perception of Mandarin tones.

Abstract:The paper describes and analyzes disyllabic tone sandhi pattern of Xinqiao dialect in Zhangping county,Fujian province.The pattern is the first syllable takes on sandhi tone whereas the second the citation tone,with the main features as follows:1) the sandhi tone and the citation tone are consistent in the features of being smooth or checked;2) value of the sandhi tone is not beyond the citation tone system;3) tonal alternation of yindiao阴调is by its neighbors,whereas that of yangdiao阳调is by itself;4) the tone sandhi pitch of yindiao is opposite to that of the following monosyllabic tone;and 5) citation tone controls whether tone sandhi is neutralized.

Abstract:Investigating lexical features with statistical methods has always been a key object of quantitative linguistic research. However, though Zhuang is the mother tongue of the minority with the largest population in China, its lexical features have attracted little attention from the researchers employing quantitative means. Based on a corpus (CZL) of over 500,000 tokens of the Zhuang language, this study addresses the features of word frequency distribution of Zhuang. The results show that Zhuang shares the universal feature of other tested languages in that its word frequency distribution abides by the Zipf's Law and the "Least Effort Principle". The study also tests the word frequency distribution of Zhuang texts of different genres, which shows that for different genres, the values of some parameters, such as b, are different. Moreover, in order to test whether Zhuang language has any distinctive or typological features in word frequency distribution, the values of the h-point and a-index of the texts in CZL are computed as well. It is found that the two indexes are effective in distinguishing Zhuang from other languages, and the position of Zhuang on the analytism-synthetism continuum proposed by Popescu is close to those of the Polynesian language family, which may be helpful for intersubjective placement of Zhuang into a language group. This study would open a new perspective in the statistical lexical research of Zhuang language and present a "new" corroborated language with respect to the laws in quantitative linguistics.
Pitch and Phonation Type Perception in Wenzhou Dialect Tone

Abstract:Wenzhou dialect is characterized by alarge tonal inventory and tones which combine pitch contour and phonation type cues. In this paper, a perception experiment was conducted to investigate identification cues of the eight tones in Wenzhou. The results of the experiment show that: I) Not all native speakers can identify tones using pitch contour alone. II) It was difficult for participants to recognize tone 1. III) Some stimuli, especially tone 4, could carry a wide range of F0 contours and still be identified as belonging to the original tonal category; many other tones, however, were perceived as belonging to other categories after only slight modifications to F0. IV) Phonation type impacts the identification of some tone categories. Based on the results, the phonological organization of Wenzhou’s tone system is examined and the possibility of reconstructing the Middle Chinese tone system is discussed.

Abstract:Hedong dialect in Dunhuang, Gansu Province, is one of the representatives of Central Plains Mandarin. This paper mainly use experimental phonetic method to study the monosyllabic tones of Hedong dialect. In this paper, the old male and the young male are chosen as the pronunciators. Firstly, the rules of tone evolution of the old male and the young male is analyzed through experiments. Then, the tone height and length patterns of the old male and the young male are constructed. Finally, the differences between the old male and the young male in Hedong dialect are compared with the results of previous studies.

Abstract:The paper verifies that a Hakka dialect in Datang village, Longmu Town, Longchuan County which is located in eastern Guangdong Province, has seven tones, and the yangshang(阳上) tone category belongs to the colloquial strata of the quanzhuo shangsheng(全浊上声) and cizhuo shangsheng(次浊上声), or the medieval quanzhuo(全浊) (voiced stops and affricates) and cizhuo(次浊) (sonorant) initials in the shang(上) category. This dialect has retained an independent tone category yangshang with words with the quanzhuo shangsheng category, a distinctive feature of early Hakka dialects in which the shift of words in the yangshang tone category to other tone categories did not occur as predicted. This is rarely seen in all other Hakka dialects and very valuable in studies on phonological distinction and change of the Hakka dialects.

Abstract:The tone sandhi of two-word sequences in Yantai dialect is based on the contextual tone sandhi in Northern Mandarin, while that of the three-word sequences is based on the template tone sandhi of Wu dialects. Based on prosodic-syntactic interface and prosodic phonology theory, the analysis on the prosodic domain of tone sandhi in Yantai dialect shows that the minimal prosodic phrase (omega{min}) jointly formed by the principle of Matching Theory and prosodic marking constraints constitutes the prosodic domain of tone sandhi in Yantai dialect, which, according to the Matching Theory, demonstrates the character of recursivity. The categorization of the prosodic domain of tone sandhi in Yantai Dialect is mapped with the alignment pattern of prosodic marking restrictions ranking higher than matching principles. The proposal of principle of constraints simplifies the definition pattern of the prosody domain and is of universal significance to the analysis of Jiaodong dialect represented by Yantai dialect.

Abstract:In the social dialect of Beijing Mandarin, Tone 4 (T4), a falling tone, can turn into a rising tone when preceding another T4. Researchers have not been able to reach an agreement on the cause of the tone sandhi rule. This paper investigates the relationship between preceding-T4 sandhi and lexical stress based on the results of a speech case study and text analysis. First of all, two perceptual experiments and an acoustic measurement were conducted to verify stress patterns in disyllabic sample words where the preceding-T4 sandhi can occur. Results showed that in almost all of these samples, listeners confirmed they had final stress. Next, the chosen sample words were cross-checked with lists of neutral-tone words, which further proved they cannot have initial stress in spoken Beijing Mandarin. The causes of two patterns of T4 sandhi, namely, the preceding T4 changing to a rising tone and the following T4 changing to a low falling tone, and the effect of lexical stress on the sandhi patterns were analyzed. We argue that both T4 sandhi patterns are the results of assimilation between adjacent tones under the effects of Principle of Accentual Preservation, Principle of Accentual Attraction, and Principle of Up and Down, and that the effects of progressive and regressive assimilation in T4-sequences imply that two stress patterns initial and final-stress patterns exist in Beijing Mandarin.

Abstract:In Standard Chinese, Tone 3 (the dipping tone) becomes Tone 2 (rising tone) when followed by another Tone 3. Previous studies have noted that this sandhi process may be incomplete, in the sense that the assimilated Tone 3 is still distinct from a true Tone 2. While Mandarin Tone 3 sandhi is widely studied using carefully controlled laboratory speech (Xu, 1997) and more formal registers of Beijing Mandarin (Yuan and Chen, 2014), less is known about its realization in spontaneous speech, and about the effect of contextual factors on tonal realization. The present study investigates the pitch contours of two-character words with T2-T3 and T3-T3 tone patterns in spontaneous Taiwan Mandarin conversations. Our analysis makes use of the Generative Additive Mixed Model (GAMM, Wood, 2017) to examine fundamental frequency (f0) contours as a function of normalized time. We consider various factors known to influence pitch contours, including gender, speaking rate, speaker, neighboring tones, word position, bigram probability, and also novel predictors, word and word sense (Chuang et al., 2024). Our analyses revealed that in spontaneous Taiwan Mandarin, T3-T3 words become indistinguishable from T2-T3 words, indicating complete sandhi, once the strong effect of word (or word sense) is taken into account. For our data, the shape of f0 contours is not co-determined by word frequency. In contrast, the effect of word meaning on f0 contours is robust, as strong as the effect of adjacent tones, and is present for both T2-T3 and T3-T3 words.
