Abstract:A technique of imaging with a spatial coherence function, referred to as coherence holography, is proposed. A hologram of a three-dimensional object is recorded with coherent light in the same manner as in conventional holography, but the hologram is illuminated with spatially incoherent light to reconstruct the object as the three-dimensional distribution of a spatial coherence function, rather than as the amplitude or the intensity distribution of the optical field. A simple optical geometry for direct visualization of the reconstructed coherence image is proposed, and the results of preliminary experiments of a computer-generated coherence hologram (CGCH) are presented, which demonstrate the potential of CGCH as a means for optical coherence tomography and profilometry.

Abstract:The complete characterization of spatial coherence is extremely difficult because the mutual coherence function (MCF) is a complex-valued function of four independent Cartesian coordinates. This difficulty limits the ability to control and to optimize the spatial coherence in a broad range of key applications. Here we propose an efficient and robust scheme for measuring the complete MCF of an arbitrary partially coherent beam using self-referencing holography, which does not require any prior knowledge or making any assumptions about the MCF. We further apply our method to lensless diffractive imaging, and experimentally demonstrate the reconstruction of a phase object under spatially partially coherent illumination. This application is particularly useful for imaging at short wavelengths, where the illumination sources lack spatial coherence and no high-quality imaging optics are available.
Incoherent Correlation Digital Holography: Principle, Development, and Applications

Abstract:According to D. Gabor's proposal, holography is a coherent imaging technique where the object's three-dimensional information is first recorded and then reconstructed from the hologram that obtained through the interference of object and reference beams. The coherence of light originating from any two points on the object is required for holographic techniques. However, this requirement on spatial coherence prevents holography from being used in incoherent light applications. Indeed, the development of incoherent holography is important because the incoherent light sources widely exist and are easy to obtain in nature compared with the laser source. Merz and Young first proposed Fresnel-zone-plate coded imaging technique with incoherent illumination and explained their methodology according to holographic theory. Lohmann further presented wavefront retrieval of incoherent objects based on the skills of beam split and self-interference of an object beam and a same originated reference beam, thereby forming the academic idea of incoherent holography. The spatial coherence is no longer necessary in incoherent holography since using specific beam splitting skills to form the hologram of incoherent illuminated or self-luminous objects by the interference of two beams that originated from the same point. In the past few decades, enormous efforts have been addressed to develop the basic principle and reconstruction algorithms and improve imaging performances and applications of incoherent holography. This review focuses on demonstrating the basic concept and applications of various incoherent coded aperture correlation digital holography techniques, with or without a two-beam interference, to provide a clear picture of recent progress in incoherent holography. We also discussed the main challenges and limitations of existing methods and potential directions in which efforts can be made to advance incoherent research holography.

Abstract:A new scheme for synthesizing three-dimensional longitudinal spatial coherence function is proposed. By manipulating the irradiance of an extended quasi-monochromatic spatially incoherent source with a spatial light modulator, we generated a special optical field that exhibits high coherence selectively for the specified location along the optical axis of propagation and for the specified inclination between the two mirrors in the interferometer. The feasibility of the proposed principle is demonstrated by measuring a step height made by standard gauge blocks. The proposed scheme permits one to perform phase shift without recourse to mechanical movement. The quantitative experimental proof of the principle is presented.

Abstract:The coherence of optical field is an important physical property that should be quantified to produce significant interference phenomenon. Although high spatial and temporal coherence lasers have become an essential tool in traditional interferometry and holography, in many emerging computational imaging fields (such as computational photography and computational microscopy imaging), reducing the coherence of the light source, i. e. , using a partially coherent light source, is uniquely advantageous for obtaining high signal-to-noise ratio and high-resolution imaging information. As a result, the importance of "characterization" and "reconstruction" of partially coherent optical fields has become increasing prominent. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce the optical field coherence theory and develop coherence measurement techniques to answer "what light should be" and "what light is" in computational imaging. This paper provides a systematic review in the aforementioned context. The basic principles and typical optical path structures of the interferometric coherence measurement and non-interferometric coherence retrieval methods are described using the classical correlation function and phase space optics theories. Several new computational imaging regimes derived from coherence measurements and their typical applications, such as light-field imaging, non-interferometric phase retrieval, incoherent holography, incoherent synthetic aperture, incoherent cone-beam tomography, are discussed. Further, the challenges faced the current coherence measurement technology are discussed and its future development trend is predicted.

Abstract:We have proposed an optical information processing technique by synthesis of the optical coherence function utilizing direct frequency modulation of a laser diode. In the former system, however, a silver halide holographic plate was used, so wet developing process was required. In this letter, real-time holography is adopted by using a liquid crystal spatial light modulator, which enables real-time processing. This system does not require any mechanically moving part nor electrical calculation in the processing procedure. Selective extraction of a 2-dimensional image from a 3-dimensional object is successfully demonstrated in real-time.

Abstract:Holography has always held special appeal, for it is able to record and display spatial information in three dimensions. Here, we show how to augment the capabilities of digital holography by using a large number of narrow laser lines at precisely-defined optical frequencies simultaneously. Using an interferometer based on two frequency combs of slightly different repetition frequencies and a lens-less camera sensor, we record time-varying spatial interference patterns that generate spectral hypercubes of complex holograms, revealing, for each comb line frequency, amplitudes and phases of scattered wave-fields. Unlike with previous multi-color holography and low-coherence holography (including with a frequency comb), the unique synergy of broad spectral bandwidth and high temporal coherence in dual-comb holography opens up novel optical diagnostics, such as precise dimensional metrology over large distances without interferometric phase ambiguity, or hyperspectral 3-dimensional imaging with high spectral resolving power, as we illustrate by molecule-selective imaging of an absorbing gas.

Abstract:We propose a short-coherence lensless Fourier-transform digital holography for imaging through scattering media. The technique utilizes a low-power cw diode laser with short temporal coherence and enables the selection of the early-arriving photons through a diffusive medium by interfering with a spherical reference beam from the same source. An averaging technique is introduced to extract the weak signal from strong background noise. The proposed technique is verified using both theoretical analysis and experimental demonstration by imaging an object through a 3-mm-thick chicken breast tissue.

Abstract:Optical coherence is a fundamental characteristic of light that plays a significant role in understanding interference, propagation, light-matter interaction, and other fundamental aspects of classical and quantum wave fields. The study of optical coherence has led to a wide range of applications, including optical coherence tomography, ghost imaging, and free-space optical communications. In recent years, the complex spatial structure of optical coherence embedded in partially coherent light beams has garnered increasing attention due to the novel physical effects it induces, such as self-shaping, self-focusing, and self-splitting of beams in free space. Partially coherent light beams with non-classical spatial coherence structures have found use in many innovative applications, including overcoming the classical Rayleigh diffraction limit in optical imaging, reducing the side effects of atmospheric turbulence in free-space optical communications, coherence-based optical encryption, and robust optical signal transmission. In this article, we present a systematic review of the manipulation and measurement of the spatial coherence structure of optical beams, their propagation and light-matter interaction, as well as the applications of partially coherent light beams with structured optical coherence. We begin with the representation of the cross-spectral density function for a partially coherent light beam using Gori's nonnegative definite condition and Wolf's coherent-mode decomposition theory. We then discuss in detail two different strategies for experimentally manipulating the spatial coherence structure, one based on the generalized van Cittert–Zernike theorem and the other on the coherent-mode decomposition theory. Next, we provide an overview of recent progress in measuring the complex spatial coherence structure of partially coherent light beams using methods based on self-referencing holography, generalized Hanbury Brown and Twiss experiment, and incoherent modal decomposition. We study the novel physical properties of partially coherent light beams with non-conventional spatial coherence structures during their propagation in free space and through a highly focused system, as well as their interaction with atmospheric turbulence. We also discuss the effect of structured optical coherence in reducing the negative effects of atmospheric turbulence. Finally, we present the applications of spatial coherence structure engineering in optical imaging, optical encryption, robust information transmission through complex media, particle trapping, refractive index measurement, beam shaping, and ultrahigh precision angular velocity measurement. Optical coherence structure not only provides a new degree of freedom for light manipulation but also offers an effective tool for novel light applications.

Holographic Color Imaging of Incoherent Three-Dimensional Objects by Off-Axis Fourier Triangular Digital Holography

Abstract:A novel method of holographic color imaging for 3D spatially incoherent objects is proposed in this paper. Off-axis incoherent Fourier holographic recording of quasi-monochromatic illuminated objects is implemented by modifying the optical configuration of radial shearing triangular interferometer. Three holograms are recorded sequentially when the object is illuminated by red, green and blue color extended light and then synthesized to generate a RGB fashion color image. Holograms of different view of the object are recorded and reconstructed sequentially to achieve a holographic color imaging. Some image fusion skills are employed during the holographic reconstruction to compensate the chromatism and aberrations of the wavelength sensitively system. The method holds great potential in some applications such as high speed 3D spectral imaging.
Optical tomography in coherent off-axis scanning holography

Abstract:Off-axis optical scanning holography (OSH) has been recently proposed to perform scanning holography without the use of heterodyning. In the present work, we combine the principle of off-axis scanning holography operating in the coherent mode with the idea of a layer-based method to achieve a new computational imaging technique for optical tomography. The point cloud data of a complex three-dimensional (3D) scene is layered along the depth direction as the 3D object is divided into a series of planar layers parallel to the hologram along the optical axis direction. The data of each layer generates a single-layer hologram under coherent off-axis scanning holography. Finally, the hologram of a complex three-dimensional object is obtained by superimposing all the single-layer holograms. We use a single-sideband filter to extract the hologram spectrum to obtain a positive first-order reconstruction and demonstrate numerical reconstruction with different diffraction distances. Also, optically reconstructed images are displayed by a spatial light modulator. The results indicate that the proposed method can realize the holographic recording and reconstruction of a complex three-dimensional object without the zeroth-order beam and the twin image, providing a new computational method for the generation of holograms of large-scale and long-depth 3D objects.

Abstract:It seems well known that the performance of optically spatial interference requires a coherent light source since the Young's double-slit interference experiment which for the first time demonstrated the wave nature of light. Here we report the experimental research which contradicts this common knowledge. Our experimental scheme is very similar to Gabor's original proposal of holography,except that an incoherent source replaces the coherent one. To realize the interference using incoherent light,the object wave and reference wave in our holographic schemes travel through different diffraction lengths or configurations. As a result,the hologram of the object is recorded in the average intensity distribution of the interference plane.

Abstract:We study the effect of a decrease in the magnitude of the coherence signal in high-frequency spatial spectrum for a defocused object image in transmission digital holographic microscopy with quasimonochromatic partially spatially coherent illumination. A theoretical description and results of the numerical simulation of the effect for a point scattering object are presented. The effect is experimentally studied by illuminating layered quasi-point scatterers with partially spatially coherent laser light obtained using a moving scatterer. The comparison of the experimental and theorybased numerical results shows them to be in good agreement.

Abstract:As an alternative to the conventional optical frequency comb technique, a spatial frequency comb technique is proposed for dispersion-free optical coherence depth sensing. Instead of generating an optical frequency comb over a wide range of time spectrum, we generate a spatial frequency comb by modulating the incident angle of a monochromatic plane wave with a spatial light modulator (SLM). The use of monochromatic light combined with the SLM enables dispersion-free depth sensing that is free from mechanical moving components.

Abstract:Abstract Coherence, like amplitude, polarization and phase, is a fundamental characteristic of the light fields and is dominated by the statistical optical property. Generally, accurate coherence manipulation is challenging since coherence as a statistical quantity requires the combination of various bulky optical components and fast tuning of optical media. Spatial coherence as another pivotal optical dimension still has not been significantly manipulated on the photonic platform. Here, we theoretically and experimentally realize accurate manipulation of the spatial coherence of light fields by loading a temporal random phase distribution onto the wave-front on the statistical photonic platform. By quantitatively manipulating the statistical photonic properties, we can successfully achieve the partially coherent light with the pre-defined degree of coherence and continuously modulate it from fully coherent to incoherent. This design strategy can also be easily extended to manipulate the spatial coherence of other special beams such as partially coherent vortex beam generations. Our approach provides straightforward rules to manipulate the coherence of the light fields and paves the way for applications of partially coherent beams in information encryption, ghost imaging, and information transmission in turbulent media.
Characterization of Defocused Coherent Imaging Systems with Periodic Objects

Abstract:Recent advancements in quantum and quantum-inspired imaging techniques have enabled high-resolution 3D imaging through photon correlations. These techniques exhibit reduced degradation of image resolution for out-of-focus samples compared to conventional methods (i.e., intensity-based incoherent imaging). A key advantage of these correlation-based approaches is their independence from the system numerical aperture (NA). Interestingly, both improved resolution of defocused images and NA-independent scaling are linked to the spatial coherence of light. This suggests that while correlation measurements exploit spatial coherence, they are not essential for achieving this imaging advantage. This discovery has led to the development of optical systems that achieve similar performance by using spatially coherent illumination and relying on intensity measurements: direct 3D imaging with NA-independent resolution was recently demonstrated in a correlation-free setup using LED light. Here, we explore the physics behind the enhanced performance of defocused coherent imaging, showing that it arises from the modification of the sample's spatial harmonic content due to diffraction, unlike the blurring seen in conventional imaging. The results we present are crucial for understanding the implications of the physical differences between coherent and incoherent imaging, and are expected to pave the way for the practical application of the discovered phenomena.

Synthesis of Coherence Function and Its Application to Photonic Sensing

Abstract:We have proposed and studied a unique technique of synthesis of the optical coherence function. It has been demonstrated that the optical coherence function can be synthesized into desired shapes by appropriately modulating the optical frequency of the laser source and the phase difference in an interferometer. This technique has been used for photonic sensing and optical information processing applications. In this presentation, the principle of the technique is explained, the performance deterioration factors and the countermeasures are discussed, and then several application systems, including optical information processing, reflectometry, and distributed fiber-optic sensing, are introduced.
