Abstract:Many algorithms for human face recognition have been proposed in recent years. We study how to combine these algorithms for better performance. A fusion framework combining the existing recognition algorithms based on a support vector machine is developed. The experimental results demonstrate its effectiveness.

Abstract:Recent research emphasizes more on analyzing multiple features to improve face recognition (FR) performance. One popular scheme is to extend the sparse representation based classification framework with various sparse constraints. Although these methods jointly study multiple features through the constraints, they just process each feature individually such that they overlook the possible high-level relationship among different features. It is reasonable to assume that the low-level features of facial images, such as edge information and smoothed/low-frequency image, can be fused into a more compact and more discriminative representation based on the latent high-level relationship. FR on the fused features is anticipated to produce better performance than that on the original features, since they provide more favorable properties. Focusing on this, we propose two different strategies which start from fusing multiple features and then exploit the dictionary learning (DL) framework for better FR performance. The first strategy is a simple and efficient two-step model, which learns a fusion matrix from training face images to fuse multiple features and then learns class-specific dictionaries based on the fused features. The second one is a more effective model requiring more computational time that learns the fusion matrix and the class-specific dictionaries simultaneously within an iterative optimization procedure. Besides, the second model considers to separate the shared common components from class-specified dictionaries to enhance the discrimination power of the dictionaries. The proposed strategies, which integrate multi-feature fusion process and dictionary learning framework for FR, realize the following goals: (1) exploiting multiple features of face images for better FR performances; (2) learning a fusion matrix to merge the features into a more compact and more discriminative representation; (3) learning class-specific dictionaries with consideration of the common patterns for better classification performance. We perform a series of experiments on public available databases to evaluate our methods, and the experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed models.

Abstract:Global features-based methods and local features -based methods have been very successful in face recognition system, yet they can be combined together and jointly optimized so as to minimize the error of a nearest-neighbor classifier. We consider both descriptor for face images with Local Multiple Pattern, and discriminant learning techniques with Exponential Discriminant Analysis. A combination framework based on Local Multiple Pattern and Exponential Discriminant Analysis has been proposed in this paper. Firstly, our approach encodes the multi-scale face feature by Local Multiple Pattern, and then they have been extended to strengthen the discriminative ability by Exponential Discriminant Analysis; Secondly, we suggest to use the above feature on different layers independently so that a multiple classifier system can be attained. Using these techniques, we obtain the state-of-the-art performance on two public available databases. © 2013 IFSA.

Abstract:Local binary pattern (LBP) operator offers an efficient way to recognize face under varying illumination, while it has the drawback of abandoning some important texture features. Local multiple patterns (LMP) has alleviated the problem by a hierarchical model. However, the LMP method can bring out the rapid expansion of feature dimension, so a special feature encoding method is adopted by this paper. Meanwhile, we find that the LMP features of different layers can be used to recognize face independently so that it would preserve more abundant recognition information. Most importantly, the contribution of the LMP features from different layers is blurry under varying illumination. We propose a fuzzy framework to fuse the recognition result of different layers and use adaptive weights to calculate contribution rates of different layers under varying illumination. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms other state-of-the-art methods on four databases such as Yale B, Extended Yale B, CMU PIE and Outdoor.

Abstract:Integration of various face recognition algorithms has proved to be a feasible approach to improve the performance of a face recognition system. Different face recognition algorithms are often based on different representations of the input patterns or on extracted features and hence may complement each other. Linear and nonlinear feature based algorithms can capture and handle different kinds of variations, such as pose, illumination and expression variations. To make full use of the different advantages of different classifiers, we propose combining four linear and nonlinear face recognition algorithms via a weighted combination scheme to improve the recognition performance of a face recognition system. The FERET, YaleB and CMU PIE database are used for evaluating the combination scheme and the results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed combination scheme.

Abstract:In order to improve the performances of bag-of-features (BoF) in face recognition, a face recognition algorithm based on the fusion of multiple features under the framework of bag-of-features was proposed in this paper. This method firstly extracted different kinds of local features in face images to learn a corresponding over complete visual dictionary in advance. Then it mapped each local feature into a high dimensional mid-level se-mantic space, and employed spatial pyramid matching (SPM) to pool local coding features. Different kinds of features were concatenated as the final representation of images and classified by trained linear SVM. Experi-mental results on several benchmark datasets show that our method is more robust to position variations, expres-sion changes and occlusion and can effectively solve the small training size problem.

Abstract:The 3D face recognition attracts more and more attention because of its insensitivity to the variance of illumination and pose.There are many crucial problems to be solved in this topic,such as 3D face representation and effective multi-feature fusion.In this paper,a novel 3D face recognition algorithm is proposed and its performance is demonstrated on BJUT-3D face database.This algorithm chooses face surface property and the principle component of relative relation matrix as the face representation features. The similarity metric measure for each feature is defined.A feature fusion strategy is proposed.It is a linear weighted strategy based on Fisher linear discriminant analysis.Finally,the presented algorithm is tested on the BJUT-3D face database.It is concluded that the performance of the algorithm and fusion strategy is satisfying.

Abstract:High accuracy face recognition is of great importance for a wide variety of real-world applications. Although significant progress has been made in the last decades, fully automatic face recognition systems have not yet approached the goal of surpassing the human vision system, even in controlled conditions. In this paper, we propose an approach for robust face recognition by fusing two complementary features: one is Gabor magnitude of multiple scales and orientations and the other is Fourier phase encoded by spatial pyramid based local phase quantization (SPLPQ). To reduce the high dimensionality of both features, block-wise fisher discriminant analysis (BFDA) is applied and further combined by score-level fusion. Moreover, inspired by the biological cognitive mechanism, multiple face models are exploited to further boost the robustness of the proposed approach. We evaluate the proposed approach on three challenging databases, i.e., FRGC ver2.0, LFW, and CFW-p, that address two face classification scenarios, i.e., verification and identification. Experimental results consistently exhibit the complementarity of the two features and the performance boost gained by the multiple face models. The proposed approach achieved approximately 96% verification rate when FAR was 0.1% on FRGC ver2.0 Exp.4, impressively surpassing all the best known results.

Abstract:In this paper, a recognition method for multiple classifiers is proposed, which combines an improved eigenface method with Support Vector Machine(SVM). The combining classifiers can make use of high recognition rate for SVM and high speed for distance classification. The distance classifier may classify the input images and give the final results when the rejecting rule is satisfied. Otherwise, these images are delivered to SVM for further classification. Experiment data show that the fusion of multiple classifiers for face recognition has higher efficiency, accuracy of recognition and lower rate of error recognition.

Abstract:Face recognition is an important field of artificial intelligence. Single face recognition is one of the indispensable and challenging directions. There have been many existing single face recognition algorithms, such as PCA, 2DPCA, LDA, SVD, HMM, maximum likelihood linear regression, neural network and so on. These algorithms mainly solve the problem of single face recognition from three perspectives: expanding samples, expanding feature space and creating a learning general framework. The general performance of the algorithm for learning the general framework and extending the feature space is better than that of the method for expanding samples. In this paper,a face recognition learning algorithm based on multi-source superpixel fusion is proposed, which combines extended feature space and learning general framework. This algorithm mainly combines the proposed multi-source fusion representation model with super-pixel face features, and uses the theory of multi-source fusion model to solve the shortcomings of super-pixel face features. In particular, LBP algorithm is introduced into super-pixel segmentation to reduce the impact of illumination, rotation and occlusion on superpixel segmentation. Finally, the feasibility and validity of the super-pixel face recognition learning algorithm based on multi-source fusion model are demonstrated by simulation experiments.

Abstract:A complete face recognition system based on feature fusion and neural network is proposed in this paper. The new face coding technology based on the fusion of SOM and Shape features is utilized. The dimensionality of the fused feature space is reduced using generalized K-L transform. The corresponding reduced feature is then processed by the Uncorrelated Discriminant Transform (UDT), which has better classification capability than that of the classical Foley-Sammon Discriminant Transform (FSDT), to obtain optimal discriminant feature. Finally, a Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), the output of which consists of class membership values, is utilized as the face recognizer. Experimental results on the face database NUST603 of 960 face images corresponding to 96 subjects show the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed approach.

Abstract:This paper proposed a novel 3D face recognition algorithm using multi-level multi-feature fusions. A new face representation method named average edge image is proposed in addition to traditional ones such as maximal principal curvature image and range image. In the matching process stage, a new weight calculation algorithm based on the sum rule is presented for feature fusion and match score fusion in order to improve the matching precision. Depending on the complementary characteristic of feature fusion and match score fusion, a combination of them named two-level fusion is proposed. Experiments are conducted using our own 3D database consisting of nearly 400 samples. Mesh simplification is utilized for data reduction. Recognition results show that the new weight calculation method improves the recognition accuracy and the two-level fusion algorithm performs better than feature fusion and match score fusion.

Abstract:Facial expression recognition has played a significant role in harmonious human-computer interaction, and feature extraction is the key step for the final recognition result. In the part of feature extraction, a fusion information generally has a number of advantages over a single feature information. The traditional serial features fusion technique is the most common fusion method, but there is a constant problem existing in the above fusion method: the curse of the dimension. For solving the problem, a new fusion method is proposed. Extensive experiments illustrate that the new image fusion method has higher recognition rate and better realtime.

Abstract:Recent studies show face recognition (FR) with additional features achieves better performance than that with single one. Different features can represent different characteristics of human faces, and utilizing different features effectively will have positive effect on FR. Meanwhile, the advances of sparse coding enable researchers to develop various recognition methods to cooperate with multiple features. However, even if these methods achieve very encouraging performances, there still exist some intrinsic problems. Firstly, these methods directly encode the multiple features over the original training set, by which way some redundant, noisy and trivial information are incorporated and the recognition performance can be compromised. Moreover, when the training data increase in number, the jointly-encoding process can be very time-consuming. Thirdly, these methods ignore some semantic relationships among the features, which can boost the FR performance. Thus, coarsely utilizing all the features not only adds extra computation burden, but also prevent further improvement. To address these issues, we propose to fuse the multiple features into a more preferable presentation, which is more compact and more discriminative for better FR performance. As well, we take advantage of the dictionary learning framework to derive an effective recognition scheme. We evaluate our model by comparing it with other state-of-the-art approaches, and the experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.

Abstract:The combining classifier approach has proved to be a proper way for improving recognition performance in the last two decades. This paper proposes to combine local and global facial features for face recognition. In particular, this paper addresses three issues in combining classifiers, namely, the normalization of the classifier output, selection of classifier(s) for recognition, and the weighting of each classifier. For the first issue, as the scales of each classifier's output are different, this paper proposes two methods, namely, linear-exponential normalization method and distribution-weighted Gaussian normalization method, in normalizing the outputs. Second, although combining different classifiers can improve the performance, we found that some classifiers are redundant and may even degrade the recognition performance. Along this direction, we develop a simple but effective algorithm for classifiers selection. Finally, the existing methods assume that each classifier is equally weighted. This paper suggests a weighted combination of classifiers based on Kittler's combining classifier framework. Four popular face recognition methods, namely, eigenface, spectroface, independent component analysis (ICA), and Gabor jet are selected for combination and three popular face databases, namely, Yale database, Olivetti Research Laboratory (ORL) database, and the FERET database, are selected for evaluation. The experimental results show that the proposed method has 5–7% accuracy improvement.
Iris Recognition Based on Multialgorithmic Fusion

Abstract:Fusion of multiple algorithms for biometric verification performance improvement has received considerable attention. This paper proposes an iris recognition method based on multialgorithmic fusion. The proposed method combines the phase information based algorithm and zero-crossing representation based algorithm at the matching score level. The fusion rule based on support vector machine (SVM) is applied to generate a fused score which is used to make the fial decision. The experimental results on CASIA and UBIRIS iris image databases show that the proposed multialgorithmic fusion method can bring obvious performance improvement compared with any single algorithm, and the results also demonstrate that the fusion rule based on SVM can achieve better performance than conventional 1 fusion rules.

Abstract:Current two-dimensional face recognition approaches can obtain a good performance only under constrained environments. However, in the real applications, face appearance changes significantly due to different illumination, pose, and expression. Face recognizers based on different representations of the input face images have different sensitivity to these variations. Therefore, a combination of different face classifiers which can integrate the complementary information should lead to improved classification accuracy. We use the sum rule and RBF-based integration strategies to combine three commonly used face classifiers based on PCA, ICA and LDA representations. Experiments conducted on a face database containing 206 subjects (2,060 face images) show that the proposed classifier combination approaches outperform individual classifiers.
Face Recognition Based on Fusing 2D and 3D Information

Abstract:Most recognition algorithms are for 2D data with strict restrictions,these algorithms are easily affected by pose,illumination and other factors.The reason is due to the shortage of information.To resolve this problem,we present a face recognition algorithm based on fusing 2D and 3D information.Being different from other algorithms,the input of our algorithm is one single 2D gray-scale image and 3D information is provided by reconstructed the 3D model.For the 2D image,we choose LBP feature as face representation feature.For the 3D model,we define 54 feature points,calculate geodesic distances between the nose tip and other feature points as 3D feature.A weighted sum of the 2D and 3D scores is used to deliver the fusion process and the weights are determined based on Fisher Linear Discriminant Analysis.Finally,the presented algorithm is tested on CAS-PEAL-R1 face database with illumination.

Abstract:A new face recognition method applying the information of the global and local features is presented.First the best representation of local features of left eye,right eye and mouth is extracted with face recognition algorithms DCT+LDA method and the global feature with algorithms Fisherface and simple spretroface method,and then the global and local features are combined applying the multiple classifiers fusion rule.Experimental results show the recognition rate is 98.45% in the ORL database and 90.79% in the FERET database applying weigthed sum rule,showing the method is availably and the thought is feasible using multiple classifiers fusion for face recognition.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm for facial recognition based on features fusion in support vector machine (SVM). First, some local features and global features from pre-processed face images are obtained. The global features are obtained by making use of singular value decomposition (SVD). At the same time, the local features are obtained by utilizing principal component analysis (PCA) to extract the principal Gabor features. Finally, the feature vectors which are fused with global and local features are used to train SVM to realize the face expression recognition, and the computer simulation illustrates the effectivity of this method on the JAFFE database.
