Abstract:Though the Dunhuang Manuscripts of Shijiejing and Dongxuanlingbaotianzunshuoshijiejing collected in Daozang differ in characters, they share the same basic contents in general. Both Shijie and Shisichishenzhipin in Shijiejing had already appeared in a series of Ku-ling-Pao-Ching. However, they were separate but combined together at the beginning. To meet the Taoists' needs of study, recitation, publicity and instruction, Shijie and Shisichishenzhipin were combined together from around the late Northern and Southern dynasties to the early Tang Dynasty on the basis of taking in contents of Kulingpaojing like Taishangdongxuanlingbaozhihuidingzhitongweijing and Taishangdongxuanlingbaozhihuizuigenshangpindajiejing, which finally led to the formation of Shijiejing and its recognition as a discipline for the Taoist priests.In the Dunhuang Manuscripts, Shijiejing and Daodejing were often seen as being copied together during the time between 709 A.D. and 757 A.D. There were many reasons for the combination. Since West Han Dynasty, Laozi was constantly being deified and the status of Daodejing also got apparent promotion. The Taoist school of Lingpao, maintaining more of the tradition of Tianshidao from the Han Dynasty to the Wei Dynasty than others, continued to deify Laozi and revering Daodejing which met the needs of the mass and followers of Taoism. The increasing influence of the school of Lingpao (Shijiejing is part of the classics of the Lingpao school) was one of the main reasons which prompted the combination and circulation of Shijiejing and Daodejing. Beside the simple contents of Shijiejing and the rich color of Confucianism it displayed and Tang dynasty’s worship of Laozi and Daodejing out of political needs in reality, Tang Dynasty in itself and the chaotic social environment before it, etc., were the main reasons that impelled the combination and wide circulation of Shijiejing and Daodejing.The combination and circulation of Shijiejing and Daodejing not only observed Taoism’s tradition of worshipping Laozi and Daodejing, but also satisfied the Confucianist needs for politics in reality and was also influenced by Buddism. It therefore endowed the combination and circulation of Shijiejing and Daodejing with a trace of a mixture of Confucianism, Buddism, and Taoism.
