Abstract:A new chiral manganese complex (C1) bearing a tetradentate nitrogen ligand containing chiral bipyrrolidine and benzimidazole moieties was prepared. The structure of C1 was confirmed by ESI-MS and crystallography. This manganese complex is an active catalyst for the asymmetric epoxidation of various olefins with excellent conversion (up to 99%) and high enantiomeric excess (up to 96% ee) with hydrogen peroxide as the oxidant in the presence of 2-ethylhexanoic acid or acetic acid. Compared with previous structurally similar manganese complexes with different diamine backbones (C2, cyclohexanediamine; C3, diamine from L-proline), C1 showed improved asymmetric induction, especially for simple olefins such as styrene derivatives and substituted chromene. The possible reasons for the improvement of the ee values are discussed in the text on the basis of the crystal structures of the manganese complexes.

Abstract:(R,R)-N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)cyclohexane-1,2-diamine (R,R-mcp) and the corresponding R,R-mcp-MnIIOTf2 complex were synthesized. Chrial manganese complex was used for the asymmetric epoxidation of α,β-unsaturated ketones. The amount of catalyst and oxidant were examined and then the scope of substrates was tested in the conditions of substrates∶H2O2 ∶CH3COOH=1∶6∶5 and the ee values were obtained in the range of 56-70%.

Abstract:A series of Mn-complexes with tetradentate N4 ligands, introducing aromatic groups into 2-pyridylmethyl positions of N,N′-dimethyl-N,N′-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine (mep), N,N′-dimethyl-N,N′-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)cyclohexane-trans-diamine (mcp), have been synthesized and applied for epoxidation of olefins using H2O2 as the oxidant. The Mn-complexes still possessed an octahedral mononuclear structure in a cis-α topology. These complexes showed good regioselectivity, high yields and turnover frequency (even up to 228,000h−1) with low catalyst loading (0.1–0.01mol%) for epoxidation of a family of olefins (including internal aromatic olefins, internal and terminal aliphatic olefins and diolefins).

Abstract:Bioinspired manganese complexes of N-4 ligands and graphene oxide (GO) synergistically catalyze the highly enantioselective epoxidation of olefins (up to 99% ee), which is a rare example with GO as a co-catalyst in asymmetric catalysis. GO as a new and key additive not only successfully functions in catalytic amounts, but also has a positive effect for improving the enantioselectivity of the asymmetric epoxidation compared with the traditional stoichiometric organic carboxylic acid method [e.g., chalcone, 95% ee (3.5 mg GO) vs. 84% ee (5 equiv., 75 mg acetic acid), ethyl cinnamate, 84% ee (3.5 mg GO) vs. 19% ee (5 equiv., 75 mg acetic acid)]. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra of GO before and after the reaction indicate that the intensities of C-O become stronger after the reaction, which may have a certain relationship with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and gives a reasonable rationale for the large consumption of H2O2. Also, part of the hydrogen peroxide was used for the oxidation of GO.

Abstract:Chiral N-oxide salen ligands and their corresponding Al complexes were synthesized. Notably, the catalytic activity and asymmetric induction ability of the bifunctional N-oxide salen-Al for asymmetric cyanosilylation were compared with that of bi-component catalyst system including chiral pyrrolidine salen–Al complex and Ph3PO. Interestingly, introducing N-oxide group in salen unit could enhance the activity and enantioselectivity of bifunctional catalyst without further adding Ph3PO as co-catalyst and inverse configurations were generated from the two systems. In addition, excellent yields and high ee values could be obtained under milder conditions in bifunctional catalyst system compared with that of bi-component catalyst system.

Abstract:A Jacobsen-type catalyst was anchored onto an amine functionalised hexagonal mesoporous silica (HMS) through the diimine bridge fragment of the complex. The new heterogeneous catalyst, as well as the precedent materials, were characterised by elemental analyses, FTIR-DRIFT, UV-vis, porosimetry and XPS which showed that the complex was successfully anchored. This material was active in the epoxidation of styrene and alpha-methylstyrene in dichloromethane at 0 degrees C using, respectively, m-CPBA/NMO and NaOCI. With the former substrate no asymmetric induction was found in the epoxide, whereas with the latter substrate higher %ee was found than in homogeneous phase. Using the latter experimental conditions, catalyst reuse led to no significant loss of catalytic activity and enantioselectivity.

Abstract:Substrate-directed enantioselective olefin epoxidation was limited to a few types of directing groups and relatively low catalyst activities. Herein, an expeditious asymmetric epoxidation protocol is reported for allylic amides and sulfonamides using a hafnium-BINAM-salen catalyst with high enantioselectivity and turnover frequency. Aryl carboxamides of allylic amines with a trisubstituted olefin motif were suitable substrates. Sequential intramolecular ring-opening in a one-pot reactor furnished highly enantiopure oxazoline alcohols. Crystallographic studies suggested the catalyst possessed a mononuclear cis-alpha configuration. Computational studies of the transition state indicated that this conversion underwent a substrate-directed pathway.

Abstract:A series of reusable, recoverable, diamine-bridged dimeric manganesesalen complexes were prepared by the encapsulation of homogeneous dimeric Mn(salen) complexes into nanocages of a 3D periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) support followed by silylation of the support with organosilane. The composition, structure, morphology, and textural properties of the prepared PMO-entrapped dimeric Mn(salen) complexes were characterized, and their catalytic performances were tested in the epoxidation of alkenes (styrene, cyclohexene, and 1-phenylcyclohexene), with NaClO as an oxygen source and 4-phenylpyridine-N-oxide as an axial ligand. Furthermore, the influences of the textural and morphological properties of the entrapped dimeric Mn(salen) complexes and the key reaction parameters on the catalytic activity and selectivity are discussed. Finally, the reusability of the supported dimeric Mn(salen) complexes was evaluated over three catalytic runs.

Abstract:Two modified Jacobsen-type catalysts were anchored onto an amine functionalised hexagonal mesoporous silica (HMS) using two distinct anchoring procedures: (i) one was anchored directly through the carboxylic acid functionalised diimine bridge fragment of the complex (CAT1) and (ii) the other through the hydroxyl group on the aldehyde fragment of the complex (CAT2), mediated by cyanuric chloride. The new heterogeneous catalyst, as well as the precedent materials, were characterised by elemental analyses, DRIFT, UV-vis, porosimetry and XPS which showed that the complexes were successfully anchored onto the hexagonal mesoporous silica. These materials acted as active heterogeneous catalysts in the epoxidation of styrene, using m-CPBA as oxidant, and a-methylstyrene, using NaOCl as oxidant. Under the latter conditions they acted also as enantioselective heterogeneous catalysts. Furthermore, when compared to the reaction run in homogeneous phase under similar experimental conditions, an increase in asymmetric induction was observed for the heterogenised CAT1x, while the opposite effect was observed for the heterogenised CAT2, despite of CAT2 being more enantioselective than CAT1 in homogeneous phase. These results indicate that the covalent attachment of the Jacobsen catalyst through the diimine bridge leads to improved enantiomeric excess (%ee), whereas covalent attachment through one of the aldehyde fragments results in a negative effect in the %ee. Using alpha-methylstyrene and NaOCl as oxidant, heterogeneous catalyst reuse led to no significant loss of catalytic activity and enantioselectivity. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Catalytic enantioselective epoxidation of olefins plays an important role in the production of optically-active epoxy. Transition-metal complexes prove efficient for the catalytic epoxidation of un-functionalized olefins by employing privileged chiral ligands with rotational symmetry and bulky substituents, which usually require complicated multistep synthesis and are often very expensive. Here, this work proposes an efficient strategy to promote the enantioselectivity of Mn(III)-catalyzed indene epoxidation, which simply utilizes the nanosheets of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) to modify α-amino acid derivatives as chiral ligands, achieving an enantioselectivity of more than 91.0%, much higher than that (<35%) in the previous reports using chiral ligands without any rotational-symmetry. By virtue of "flexible" interlayer spaces of LDHs, intercalated L-tert-leucine, L-valine, L-leucine, and L-phenylalanine anions have further been derived in situ to L-tert-leucine, L-valine, L-leucine, and L-phenylalanine Schiff base anions. Over the Mn(III) coordinated with L-phenylalanine Schiff base anion intercalated LDHs, an indene conversion of 81.0±1.0%, a chem-selectivity of 89.0±1.0%, and an enantiomeric excesses (ee) value of 94.5±0.5% for (1S,2R)-1,2-epoxyindane have been afforded. The spatial effects of LDH nanosheets on the enantioselectivity have been investigated, focusing on the interlayer orientation and arrangement order of intercalated amino acid derivative anions. The strategy has been proved valid for the epoxidation of functionalized olefins, which is more challenging, including allylic alcohols, chalcone, and chromene derivatives.

Abstract:A couple of robust and reusable diamine-bridged dimeric Mn(salen) complexes were prepared by the encapsulation of homogeneous dimeric Mn(salen) complexes into nanocages of three-dimensionally (3D) periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) support followed by the silylation of the support with organosilane. The materials exhibited 3D periodic mesostructure with body-centered Im3m symmetry, and the confined Mn(salen) complexes maintained their original structure. As-prepared heterogeneous dimeric Mn(salen) complexes were successfully applied in the epoxidation of three alkenes (i.e. styrene, cyclohexene, and 1-phenylcyclohexene) by using NaClO as the oxygen donor and CH2Cl2 as a solvent, and the reusability of the materials was evaluated through three times' catalytic runs.
