Abstract:We propose a two-colour scheme of atom guide and 1D optical lattice using evanescent light fields of TE00 and TE01 transverse modes in an optical waveguide. The optical waveguide carries red-detuned light and blue-detuned light, with both modes far from resonance. The atom guide and 1D optical lattice potentials can be transformed to each other by using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer to accurately control mode transformation. This might provide a new approach to realize flexible transition between the guiding and trapping states of atoms.

Abstract:We study the excitation conditions of the supported field modes, as well as the spontaneous decay property of a two-level quantum emitter coupled to photonic structures containing topological insulators (TIs) and left-handed materials. Within the proper field quantization scheme, the spontaneous decay rates of dipoles with different polarizations are expressed in forms of the Green's functions. We find that in the proposed structure, the variation in the topological magnetoelectric polarizability (TMP) has a deterministic effect on the excitation of different field modes. As the result, the spontaneous decay property of the quantum emitter can be engineered. For a dipole placed in different spatial regions, the spontaneous decay feature indicates a dominant contribution from the waveguide modes, the surface plasmon modes or the free vacuum modes. Moreover, a special kind of the surface plasmon modes displaying asymmetric density of states at the interfaces, becomes legal in the presence of nontrivial TIs. These phenomena manifest the feasibility in controlling dipole emissions via manipulations of the topological magnetoelectric (TME) effect. Our results have potential applications in quantum technologies relied on the accurate control over light-matter interactions.

Abstract:We introduce a two-mode quasiprobability distribution that has properties analogous to those of Wigner function, but is associated with the canonically conjugate operational phase and photon-number-difference observables. We derive two representations of the number-difference operational phase Wigner operator with use of the operational phase eigenstate ξ representation as well as the nd,r state representations, the latter being the commom eigenvector of number-difference and radius operators.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that by partial tracing the pure state in higher dimension one can deduce the mixed state of light field. In this paper the pure state in higher dimension is a three-mode squeezed state S23σS31τ000000S31−1τS23−1σ, while the mixed state's density operator is sech2σsech2τea2†a3†tanhσsech2σtanh2τa3†a30220ea2a3tanhσ , which involves both squeezing and chaotic properties of optical field. We further explain how such kind of light field can be generated by passing a two-mode squeezed light though a single-mode dissipative channel, its Wigner function is discussed by using the coherent state representation. Our work provides an important method, which can be used to theoretically find more optical fields in quantum communication and quantum optics.

Abstract:We report a study of the entanglement between the quantized photon field and an atom arising in the photo-ionization process. Our approach is based on an ab initio solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE) describing the quantum evolution of a bipartite system consisting of the atom and the quantized electromagnetic field. Using the solution of the TDSE, we calculate the reduced photon density matrix, which we subsequently use to compute entanglement entropy. We explain some properties of the entanglement entropy and propose an approximate formula for the entanglement entropy based on the analysis of the density matrix and its eigenvalues. We present the results of a comparative study of the entanglement in the photo-ionization process for various ionization regimes, including the tunneling and the multiphoton ionization regimes.

Abstract:Recently, different experimental methods to investigate the entangled two-photon absorption (ETPA) process in a variety of materials have been reported. The present work reports on a different approach on which the ETPA process is detected based on the changes induced on the Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interferogram of two photons produced by a spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) Type-II process. Using an organic solution of the laser dye Rhodamine B as a model, it is demonstrated that ETPA at 800nm can be monitored by the changes in the temporal-width and visibility of the HOM interferogram produced by the photons at a beam splitter after interacting with the sample. Additionally, we present a detail model in which the sample is modeled as a filtering function which fullfills the energy conservation conditions required by ETPA, allowing to explain the experimental observations with excellent agreement. We believe that this work represents a new perspective to study the ETPA process, by using an ultra-sensitive quantum interference technique and a detailed mathematical model of the process.
Towards robust detection of entangled two-photon absorption

Abstract:Over the last 50 years entangled photon pairs have received attention for use in lowering the flux in two-photon absorption imaging and spectroscopy. Despite this, evidence for entangled two-photon absorption (ETPA) effects remain highly debated, especially at low-fluxes. Here, we structure the transverse spatial correlations of entangled photon pairs to evidence signs of ETPA at room-temperature in organic and inorganic chromophores, in the low-flux regime. We demonstrate our scheme to be robust to common artifacts that have previously hampered detection of ETPA such as linear absorption and background fluorescence, and show that ETPA scales with transverse correlation area and chromophore two-photon cross-sections. Our results present a step towards verifying ETPA and experimentally exploring entangled light-matter interactions.

This phase space formalism is directly connected to phase-related operators. The generalized quasi-probability distribution function Q(xi) and measurable phase probability distribution function P(theta) are constructed and are useful to obtain information about phase properties of light fields.
Direct Measurement Methods of Density Matrix of an Entangled Quantum State

Abstract:In general, the state of a quantum system represented by density operator and its determination is a fundamental problem in quantum mechanics. A method of direct measurement of matrix element of density operator of a single two dimensional quantum system using weak measurement was theoretically proposed[Phys. Rev. Lett. 134, 070402(2012)] and experimentally demonstrated[Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 120401(2016)] by Lundeen et al. Furthermore, recently the Guo-Guang Can et al.[Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 150402(2019)] investigated the method of direct measurement of a nonlocal entangled quantum state. However, up to now the methods of directly measure the matrix element of density operator of an entangled quantum state have not been explicitly studied yet. As an extension of previous works, in this study we introduce two theoretical methods such as using postselected weak measurement and sequential measurements of triple products of complementary observables to direct measurement of matrix elements of density operator of two photon entangled quantum system, and discuss the similarity and the feasibility of those methods.

Abstract:Borrowing methodology from quantum mechanics, we propose and develop a density-matrix formalism for modal coupling and dispersion in mode-division multiplexing communications systems. The central concept in our formalism is the density matrix, from which all observable information of an optical field can be handily accessed. In the formalism, we derive fundamental evolution equations and concatenation rules for the key elements that characterize essential modal properties, and construct a statistical model ready for the numerical analysis of stochastic light propagation in randomly perturbed fibers. Unlike the Stokes-vector formalism that requires J2 - 1 auxiliary Gell-Mann matrices, the density-matrix formalism can be directly formulated for arbitrary modal-space dimension J. Based on the density-matrix formalism, the statistical modal properties of a 4-mode fiber under random perturbation are numerically investigated, which raises an interesting possibility of optimizing the modal dispersion by manipulation of the random perturbation.
Automated modal analysis of entanglement with bipartite self-configuring optics

Abstract:Entanglement is a unique feature of quantum mechanics. In coupled systems of light and matter, entanglement manifests itself in the linear superposition of multipartite quantum states (e.g., parametrized by the multiple spatial, spectral, or temporal degrees of freedom of a light field). In bipartite systems, the Schmidt decomposition provides a modal decomposition of the entanglement structure over independent, separable states. Although ubiquitous as a tool to describe and measure entanglement, there exists no general method to decompose a bipartite quantum state onto its Schmidt modes. Here, we propose a method that relies on bipartite self-configuring optics that automatically "learns" the Schmidt decomposition of an arbitrary pure quantum state. Our method is agnostic to the degrees of freedom over which quantum entanglement is distributed and can reconstruct the Schmidt modes and values by variational optimization of the network's output powers or coincidences. We illustrate our method with numerical examples of spectral entanglement analysis for biphotons generated via spontaneous parametric down conversion and provide experimental guidelines for its realization, including the influence of losses and impurities. Our method provides a versatile and scalable way of analyzing entanglement in bipartite integrated quantum photonic systems.

Abstract:Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen brought up a state with momenta of two particles anticorrelated, which introduced the concept of entanglement and excited many interesting studies. In contrast, we propose an experimental scheme to prepare and identify two-photon momentum positively correlated entanglement state (MPES) via Hong-Ou-Mandel interference and correlated imaging. Experimental data show that two photons are highly entangled with the transverse momenta of them positively correlated. Thus two-photon MPES has been achieved, and further investigations in properties and applications of two-photon momentum entanglement become possible.
A density matrix approach for the electroluminescence of molecules in a scanning tunneling microscope

Abstract:The electroluminescence of molecules confined inside a nanocavity in the scanning tunneling microscopy possesses many intriguing but unexplained features. We present here a general theoretical approach based on the density matrix formalism to describe the electroluminescence from molecules near a metal surface induced by both electron tunneling and local surface plasmon excitations simultaneously. It reveals the underlying physical mechanism for the external bias dependent electroluminescence. The important role played by the local surface plasmon on the electroluminescence is highlighted. Calculations for porphyrin derivatives have reproduced corresponding experimental spectra and nicely explained the observed unusual large variation of emission spectral profiles. This general theoretical approach can find many applications in the design of molecular electronic and photonic devices.

Abstract:Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and exciton–exciton annihilation (EEA) can be described by a common three level model, but the response to the external field is different. We present a theoretical study on EIT and EEA in dye molecular system under photoexcitation in the framework of reduced density matrix theory. It is found that EEA is more likely to occur under shorter pulse duration and stronger exciton coupling, while EIT is the opposite. The study of EIT in dye molecular system is of great significance for multi-signal processing in organic material based optical devices.

Non-Hermitian Hamiltonian Approach for Two-Dimensional Spectroscopy

Abstract:Two-dimensional spectroscopy (2DS) offers significant advantages in terms of high temporal and frequency resolutions and signal-to-noise ratio. Until now, the response-function (RF) formalism has been the prevalent theoretical description. In this study, we compare the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian (NHH) method with the RF formalism in a three-level system with a constant control field. We obtain the signals from both approaches and compare their population dynamics and 2DS. We propose the quasi-Green function for the NHH method, which allows all possible Liouville paths to be inferred. Although the NHH method overestimates relaxations, it also provides a more comprehensive description. Our results demonstrate that the NHH method is more suitable than the RF formalism for investigating the systems that are either dissipative or complex via the 2DS.

Characterization of two-photon polarization mixed states generated from entangled-classical hybrid photon source

Abstract:We experimentally prepare bi-photon mixed states in polarization employing an entangled-classical hybrid photon emitter which can properly model solid-state entangled photon sources with uncorrelated background photons. Polarization-uncorrelated photon pairs in totally mixed (TM) states are embodied with classical thermal radiation, while the polarization-entangled ones in a Bell state are generated by conventional parametric down conversion. The bi-photon states generated from the hybrid photon emitter are characterized in terms of a linear entropy-tangle plane, which reveals the formation of two-qubit Werner states. We also propose a direct way for evaluating the Werner states by means of minimal coincidence counts measurements. This simple method can be widely applicable in examining the bi-photon states from solid-state entangled photon sources, in which the polarization-entangled photon pairs have temporal correlation while the background photons in the TM states do not.

Abstract:We show in microwave measurements and computer simulations that the contribution of each eigenchannel of the transmission matrix to the density of states (DOS) is the derivative with angular frequency of a composite phase shift. The accuracy of the measurement of the DOS determined from transmission eigenchannels is confirmed by the agreement with the DOS found from the decomposition of the field into modes. The distribution of the DOS, which underlies the Thouless number, is substantially broadened in the Anderson localization transition. We find a crossover from constant to exponential scaling of fluctuations of the DOS normalized by its average value. These results illuminate the relationships between scattering, stored energy, and dynamics in complex media.

A multidimensional approach to quantum state tomography of photoelectron wavepackets

Abstract:There is a growing interest in reconstructing the density matrix of photoelectron wavepackets, in particular in complex systems where decoherence can be introduced either by a partial measurement of the system or through coupling with a stochastic environment. To this end, several methods to reconstruct the density matrix, quantum state tomography protocols, have been developed and tested on photoelectrons ejected from noble gases following absorption of extreme ultraviolet (XUV) photons from attosecond pulses. It remains a challenge to obtain model-free, single scan protocols that can reconstruct the density matrix with high fidelities. Current methods require extensive measurements or involve complex fitting of the signal. Efficient single-scan reconstructions would be of great help to increase the number of systems that can be studied. We propose a new and more efficient protocol that is able to reconstruct the continuous variable density matrix of a photoelectron in a single time delay scan. It is based on measuring the coherences of a photoelectron created by absorption of an XUV pulse using a broadband infrared (IR) probe that is scanned in time and a narrowband IR reference that is temporally fixed to the XUV pulse. We illustrate its performance for a Fano resonance in He as well as mixed states in Ar arising from spin-orbit splitting. We show that the protocol results in excellent fidelities and near-perfect estimation of the purity.
