Abstract:Employing multiple scales method combined with a quasidiscreteness approximation, we investigate the wave motive equation in a one-dimensional homogeneous lattice chain with second-nearest neighbors interaction, and get a new linear dispers ion relation. The result shows that, taking into consideration the second neares t-neighbor interaction and quartic anharmonic interaction simultaneously, the on e-dimensional homogeneous lattice exhibits not only envelope soliton, kink and a ntikink, but also another non-linear elementary excitation in solitary wave form -the breather.

Abstract:A general approach is given for the nonlinear excitations in the compressible Heisenberg ferromagnetic chain in coherent-state representation. It is shown that the relative ratio of epsilon to delta is very important for determining the nonlinear modified terms of the equations of motion. Epsilon = 1 square-root S (S is the spin length) and delta and a/lambda(0) (a is the lattice constant and lambda(0) is the characteristic wavelength of the excitations) are two small dimensionless parameters used in the semiclassical approximation and in the long wavelength approximation, respectively. In the case of delta = O(epsilon), the reduced equations of motion are solved exactly and spin soliton and elastic kink solutions are obtained. The other cases of the relation between delta and epsilon are also discussed and the solitary wave solutions are also given. The result obtained by Ferrer, as a special case, has been included in our approach.

Abstract:The intrinsic self-localized Frenkel excitons due to the strong exciton-exciton static dipolar attraction in one-dimensional molecular chains are theoretically shown to exist below the exciton frequency band. The numerical results for the eigenfrequeny and profile function of the intrinsic self-localized Frenkel exciton are obtained in the strong-localization limit.

Abstract:Solitary waves in a spin chain with biquadratic anisotropic exchange interaction are investigated by means of the Holstein-Primakoff bosonic representation of spin operators. It is argued that the modified terms of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation are restricted strongly by the relative ratio of two small parameters η and ε used in long wave approximation and semiclassical approximation respectively. When assuming that η and ε2 have the same order (η−ε2, the so-called “super-long wave approximation”), after retaining terms of the equivalent order O(ε8), we find that the motion of Bose operator in the anisotropic case satisfies Schrödinger equation with high-order nonlinear term α|α|4. Its solitary wave solution and relevant physical results are discussed.

Abstract:A granular chain of elastic spheres via Hertzian contact incorporates a classical nonlinear force model describing dynamical elastic solitary wave propagation. In this paper, the multiple solitary waves and their dynamic behaviors and stability in such a system are considered. An approximate KdV equation with the standard form is derived under the long-wavelength approximation and small deformation. The closed-form analytical single- and multiple-soliton solutions are obtained. The construction of the multiple-soliton solutions is analyzed by using the functional analysis. It is found that the multiple-soliton solution can be excited by the single-soliton solutions. This result is confirmed by the numerical analysis. Based on the soliton solutions of the KdV equation, the analytic solutions of multiple dark solitary waves are obtained from the original dynamic equation of the granular chain in the long-wavelength approximation. The stability of the single and multiple dark solitary wave solutions are numerically analyzed by using both split-step Fourier transform method and Runge-Kutta method. The results show that the single dark solitary wave solution is stable, and the multiple dark solitary waves are unstable.

Abstract:By using the method of multiple-scale and the continuum approximation, we study the nonlinear properties of a monoatomic chain with Kac–Baker-like long-range harmonic interaction. It is shown that the dispersion relation, the group velocity and the amplitude of solitons exhibit some new characters different from that of the nonlinear chain without Kac–Baker-like long-range harmonic interaction.

Abstract:We consider solitary wave excitations above the ground state of $F=1$ spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (SOBECs). The low energy properties of SOBECs in any of the three branches of the single particle dispersion relation can be described by suitable scalar nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations which we obtain using multiple-scale expansions. This enables us to examine a variety of different configurations, such as dark solitary waves associated with higher energy branches, as well as dark and bright structures in the lowest branch. The lowest branch can also exhibit a ``superstripe'' phase that supports solitary waves. In all cases, we provide explicit expressions for the NLS coefficients, and confirm their validity with full numerical simulations of the SOBEC system including a harmonic confining potential.

Abstract:We present a systematic analytical study of the dynamics of nonlinear magnetoinductive waves in a one-dimensional diatomic lattice of split ring resonators (SRRs) with Kerr nonlinear interaction between nearest neighbors. The linear spectrum of this model have two branches and exhibits a gap, which is proportional to the difference between two types of SRRs. We analyze the nonlinear excitations genuine of the discreteness and nonlinearity in such a diatomic chain based on an extended quasidiscreteness approach. Gap solitons (with vibrating frequency lying in the gap), resonant kinks (with the vibrating frequency lying in the frequency bands), and intrinsic localized modes (with the vibrating frequency being above all the frequency bands) are obtained explicitly. It is also shown that the existence of different localized structures depend strongly on the type of nonlinearity of the embedded medium (a self-focusing or defocusing one).

Abstract:An inhomogeneous Heisenberg spin Hamiltonian with single ion anisotropy is used to investigate the nonlinear excitations in ferromagnetic chain. By means of the Holstein-Primakoff transformation and Glauber's coherent–state representation, the equation of motion for anni-hilation operator a(j) is reduced to a nonlinear Schrödinger-like equation in the semiclassical approximation and the long wave approximation. For a homogeneous system, the exact and explicitly single soliton (localized magnon state) and two–magnon bound state solutions are Given by the inverse scattering transform.

Abstract:From the point of view of the quantum lattice liquid, an attempt is made to understand the nonlinear solitonlike excitations in the quantum anisotropic Heisenberg chain with the help of the coherent-state method. It is argued that the modified terms of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation are strongly restricted by the relation between the continuum approximation and the semiclassical approximation represented by two smallness parameters eta and epsilon, respectively. When assuming that eta and epsilon are of the same order (eta approximately epsilon), after retaining terms of order O(epsilon-6), the equation of motion of the Bose operators satisfies the cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation. Envelope-kink excitations and energy gaps are obtained. Some relevant physical results are also discussed.

Abstract:Soliton excitations in the alternating ferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chain are investigated with the use of the coherent-state method combined with the Holstein-Primakoff bosonic representation of spin operators. When the Hamiltonian and the equations of motion are recast in dimensionless forms, we obtain two partial differential equations with nonlinear coupling. Their nonlinear modified terms are strongly restricted by two dimensionless small parameters that are used in the semiclassical approximation and in the long-wavelength approximation. With use of the method of multiple scales, these equations are reduced to the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, which describes the slow spatial components of the coherent-state amplitudes. The results show that solitonlike magnon localization and the two-magnon bound state are possible in the system. The possibility of observing a gap soliton in the alternating ferromagnetic Heisenberg chain is also discussed.

Abstract:This study is concerned with solitary wave solutions and the dynamic behavior of the (2+1)-dimensional nonlinear fractional Schrödinger system. By exploring the dynamic properties of the equilibrium levels to the corresponding Hamiltonian, the expressions of exact solutions of the above system are obtained, including solitary wave solutions, periodic wave solutions, singular periodic wave solutions, singular wave solutions, kink wave solutions, and anti-kink wave solutions. Moreover, the linear stability, geometric characteristics, and limiting behavior of these solutions to the nonlinear fractional Schrödinger system were investigated.

Abstract:The (2+1)-dimensional two-component nonlocal solitons of coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equation with the partially nonlocal nonlinearity are analytically obtained. Two component optical fields exhibit different types of dynamical behaviors. The dark soliton and bright soliton for two field components describe two co-propagating fields at different frequencies and they are both quickly stabilized to propagate parallel to the z-axis after the initial oscillations. Superposed rogue waves in bright soliton and dark soliton are also constructed for two field components.

Solitary Waves Bifurcated from Bloch-band Edges in Two-Dimensional Periodic Media

Abstract:Solitary waves bifurcated from edges of Bloch bands in two-dimensional periodic media are determined both analytically and numerically in the context of a two-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a periodic potential. Using multiscale perturbation methods, the envelope equations of solitary waves near Bloch bands are analytically derived. These envelope equations reveal that solitary waves can bifurcate from edges of Bloch bands under either focusing or defocusing nonlinearity, depending on the signs of the second-order dispersion coefficients at the edge points. Interestingly, at edge points with two linearly independent Bloch modes, the envelope equations lead to a host of solitary wave structures, including reduced-symmetry solitons, dipole-array solitons, vortex-cell solitons, and so on-many of which have not been reported before to our knowledge. It is also shown analytically that the centers of envelope solutions can be positioned at only four possible locations at or between potential peaks. Numerically, families of these solitary waves are directly computed both near and far away from the band edges. Near the band edges, the numerical solutions spread over many lattice sites, and they fully agree with the analytical solutions obtained from the envelope equations. Far away from the band edges, solitary waves are strongly localized, with intensity and phase profiles characteristic of individual families.

Abstract:We study a nonintegrable discrete nonlinear Schrodinger (dNLS) equation with the term of nonlinear nearest-neighbor interaction occurred in nonlinear optical waveguide arrays. By using discrete Fourier transformation, we obtain numerical approximations of stationary and travelling solitary wave solutions of the nonintegrable dNLS equation. The analysis of stability of stationary solitary waves is performed. It is shown that the nonlinear nearest-neighbor interaction term has great influence on the form of solitary wave. The shape of solitary wave is important in the electric field propagating. If we neglect the nonlinear nearest-neighbor interaction term, much important information in the electric field propagating may be missed. Our numerical simulation also demonstrates the difference of chaos phenomenon between the nonintegrable dNLS equation with nonlinear nearest-neighbor interaction and another nonintegrable dNLS equation without the term.

Abstract:By virtue of the method of multiple scales, we have investigated the behavior of waves in a one-dimensional nonlinear monoatomic chain under damping and found that the amplitude of the lattice waves decreases and the group velocity becomes slow under the action of damping of an order of O(ε). At the same time, we have derived PDNLS equation and obtained its analytical solution. Our results show that: there exists propagating envelope soliton in the one-dimensional nonlinear monoatomic chain under the damping, provided the damping is of an order of O(ε). However, the chain supports the propagation of the soliton of bell shape or kink as the damping is of an order of O(ε2).
