Abstract:This paper aims to illuminate the cultural significance and aesthetic realm of Wang Xizhi's calligraphic works by exploring the interaction between the spirit of time in the Wei and Jin Dynasties,and the calligraphically-conscious age.The author thinks that Wang Xizhi,influenced by the philosophy of Lao Zi and Zhuang Zi and Neo-Taoism,gradually changed his aesthetic taste from classic simplicity to natural grace.The integration of Confucianism,Taoism,Buddhism and Neo-Taoism in the Wei and Jin Dynasties formed such an atmosphere in which scholars liked to have discussions on philosophy.Under such circumstances,Wang Xizhi developed the beauty of the golden-mean to its extreme,and formed a new aesthetic concept of calligraphy which inherited the essence of ancient culture and created his unique style.His beautiful handwriting formed by keeping the right way when making innovations was in a way of the golden-mean and in a manner of being both strong and supple,gaining a reputation of "being like a dragon jumping over the heavenly gate and a tiger crouching in an imperial palace".The style of grace and elegance in his calligraphic model became the mainstream in the history of Chinese calligraphy which has lasted for 1,600 years.With the radiance and charm he displayed with a harmony between content and form,he reached a perfection of unity of expression and meaning.His beautiful handwriting has been the most brilliant scenery in Chinese calligraphic culture and has cultivated great calligraphers from generation to generation.
