Abstract:In this paper, we try to construct black hole thermodynamics based on the fact that, the formation and evaporation of a black hole can be described by quantum unitary evolutions. First, we show that the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy S_BH may not be a Boltzmann or thermal entropy. To confirm this statement, we show that the original black hole's "first law" may not simply be treated as the first law of thermodynamics formally, due to some missing metric perturbations caused by matter. Then, by including those (quantum) metric perturbations, we show that the black hole formation and evaporation can be described in a unitary manner effectively, through a quantum channel between the exterior and interior of the event horizon. In this way, the paradoxes of information loss and firewall can be resolved effectively. Finally, we show that black hole thermodynamics can be constructed in an ordinary way, by constructing statistical mechanics.
Microscopic states of Kerr black holes from boundary-bulk correspondence

Abstract:It was claimed by the author that black holes can be considered as topological insulators. They both have boundary modes and those boundary modes can be described by an effective BF theory. In this paper, we analyze the boundary modes on the horizon of black holes with the methods developed for topological insulator. Firstly the BTZ black hole is analysed, and the results are compatible with the previous works. Then we generalize those results to Kerr black holes. Some new results are obtained: dimensionless right- and left-temperature can be defined and have well behaviors both in Schwarzschild limit $a\rightarrow 0$ and extremal limit $a\rightarrow M$. Upon the Kerr/CFT correspondence, we can associate a central charge $c=12 M r_+$ with an arbitrary Kerr black hole if a dual CFT exists. We can identify the microstates of the Kerr black hole with the quantum states of this scalar field. From this identification we can count the number of microstates of the Kerr black hole and give the Bekenstein-Hawking area law for the entropy.

Abstract:Taking the nonextensive Tsallis and Rényi entropies into account, we explore thermodynamic properties and phase transitions of the Kerr-Newman black holes (KNBH) in the microcanonical and canonical ensembles. We also compare our results with those obtained by attributing the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy bound to the mentioned black holes. Our analysis indicates that, similarly to the standard Boltzmann picture, isolated KNBH in the microcanonical approach are stable against axisymmetric perturbations in both Tsallis and Rényi models. On the other hand, in considering the case when the black holes are enveloped by a bath of thermal radiation in the canonical treatment, the KNBH based on the Tsallis and Rényi entropies can be stable for some values of the entropy parameters, in contrast to the traditional Boltzmann framework. For the case of Rényi entropy, we find that a Hawking-Page transition and a first order small black hole/large black hole transition can occur in a similar fashion as in rotating black holes in an anti-de Sitter space. Finally, we employ the Ruppeneir geometrothermodynamic technique to provide a new perspective on studying the nature of interactions between black hole microstructures, revealing a non-trivial impact of nonextensive entropies.

Abstract:The tunneling approach beyond semiclassical approximation has been used to calculate the corrected Hawking temperature and entropy for various black holes and FRW universe model. We examine their derivations, and prove that the quantity $H$ in the corrected temperature is the explicit function of the only free parameter $\mathcal{A}$ (which is an auxiliary parameter defined by $\mathcal{A}=\hbar S_{BH}$). Our analysis improves previous calculations, and indicates that the leading order logarithmic correction to entropy is a natural result of the corrected temperature and the first law of thermodynamics. Additionally, we apply the tunneling approach beyond semiclassical approximation to neutral black rings. Based on the analysis, we show that the entropy of neutral black rings also has a logarithmic leading order correction.

Thermodynamics of the Kerr-AdS black hole from an ensemble-averaged theory

Abstract:Exploring the universal structure of the gravitational path integral beyond semi-classical saddles and uncovering a compelling statistical interpretation of black hole thermodynamics have long been significant challenges. We investigate the statistical interpretation of the Kerr-AdS black hole thermodynamics through an ensemble-averaged theory. By extending the phase space to include all possible states with conical singularities in their Euclidean counterparts, we derive the probability distribution of different states inherited from the Euclidean gravitational path integral. Moreover, we can define a density matrix of all the states in the phase space. By ensemble-averaging over all states, we show that the black hole phase transition naturally arises in the semi-classical limit, just as in the Schwarzschild-AdS and Reissner-Nordström-AdS cases. Away from the semi-classical regime, the ensemble-averaged theory exhibits a notable deviation from the conventional phase transition. Expanding around the classical saddles yields the subleading-order correction to the Gibbs free energy, which is half of the Hawking temperature. We demonstrate that the half Hawking temperature correction is a universal feature inherent to black holes in asymptotically AdS spacetime. With the subleading-order correction to Gibbs free energy, we also suggest that the whole black hole thermodynamic should be corrected accordingly.

Thermodynamics of Kerr Effective Black Hole Geometries

Abstract:We uncover the thermodynamical properties of a class of non-asymptotically flat geometries, referred here as the Kerr effective geometries, that realize the hidden symmetries of Kerr black hole spacetimes via Teukolsky's equation in the theory of linear gravitational perturbations. While the thermodynamic properties, such as entropy, remain the same as those of Kerr black holes, the asymptotic charges, as we will demonstrate, are different. In this new framework with the ambient flat asymptotic boundary removed, we derive the mass and angular momentum of the Kerr effective geometries using the regulated Komar integral and the Brown-York prescription. We also obtain explicit expressions for the corresponding gauge potentials and electric charges. By deriving the asymptotic charges, we demonstrate that both the first law of black hole mechanics and the Smarr law hold.

Abstract:The area law of Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the black hole suggests that the black hole should have a lower-dimensional holographic description. It has been found recently that a large class of rotating and charged black holes could be holographically described a two-dimensional (2D) conformal field theory (CFT). We show that the universal information of the dual CFT, including the central charges and the temperatures, is fully encoded in the thermodynamics laws of both outer and inner horizons. These laws, characterizing how the black hole responds under the perturbation, allows us to read different dual pictures with respect to different kinds of perturbations. The remarkable effectiveness of this thermodynamics method suggest that the inner horizon could play a key role in the study of holographic description of the black hole.
Microscopic Origin of the Entropy of Single-sided Black Holes

Abstract:In this paper, we provide a state-counting derivation of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy formula for single-sided black holes. We firstly articulate the concept of the black hole microstates. Then we construct explicit mircostates of single-sided black holes in (2+1)-dimensional spacetimes with a negative cosmological constant. These microstates are constructed by putting a Karch-Randall brane behind the black hole horizon. Their difference is described by different interior excitations which gravitationally backreact. We show that these microstates have nonperturbatively small overlaps with each other. As a result, we use this fact to give a state-counting derivation of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy formula for single-sided black holes. At the end, we notice that there are no negative norm states in the resulting Hilbert space of the black hole microstates which in turn ensures unitarity. All calculations in this paper are analytic and can be easily generalized to higher spacetime dimensions.

Abstract:We compute the asymptotic symmetry group of the four dimensional near-extremal Kerr-Sen black hole within an AdS2/CFT1 correspondence. We do this by performing a Robinson-Wilczek two dimensional reduction and construct a quantum theory of the remaining field content. The resulting energy momentum tensor generates an asymptotic Virasoro algebra, to s-wave, with a calculable central extension. This center in conjunction with the proper regularized lowest Virasoro eigen-mode yields the near-extremal Kerr-Sen entropy via the statistical Cardy formula. Finally we analyze quantum holomorphic fluxes of the dual CFT giving rise to a finite Hawking temperature weighted by the central charge of the near-extremal Kerr-Sen metric.

Thermodynamic instabilities of Kerr-Newman Ads black holes

Abstract:In~\cite{Johnson:2019mdp}, Clifford put forward that the specific heat at constant volume $C_{V}$ is always negetive for the super-entropy black hole. Later in~\cite{Cong:2019bud}, Robert et al. found $C_{V}>0$ in certain region for the generalized exotic BTZ black holes. Futhermore, they proposed a new conjecture that as the $C_{V}>0$, the specific heat at constant pressure $C_{P}$ always satisfies $C_{P}<0$ in super-entropy black hole. In this paper, we examine the both conjectures with regard to the thermodynamic instability of super-entropy black hole. By means of a super-entropy black hole, the Kerr-Newman-AdS black hole in a coordinate system that rotates at infinity, we detailedly analyze its character and notice there exists the region where $C_{V}>0$ and meanwhile $C_{P}>0$. Hence, we find a counterexample to the two conjectures.

Abstract:In 1994, Susskind and Uglum argued that it is possible to derive the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy $A/4G_N$ from string theory. In this article we explain the conceptual underpinnings of this argument, while elucidating its relationship to induced gravity and ER=EPR. Following an off-shell calculation by Tseytlin, we explicitly derive the classical closed string effective action from sphere diagrams at leading order in $\alpha^{\prime}$. We then show how to use this to obtain black hole entropy from the RG flow of the NLSM on conical manifolds. (We also briefly discuss the more problematic ``open string picture'' of Susskind and Uglum, in which strings end on the horizon.) We then compare these off-shell results with the rival ``orbifold replica trick'' using the on-shell $\mathbb{C}/Z_{N}$ background, which does not account for the leading order Bekenstein-Hawking entropy -- unless perhaps tachyons are allowed to condense on the orbifold. Possible connections to the ER=EPR conjecture are explored. Finally, we discuss prospects for various extensions, including prospects for deriving holographic entanglement entropy in the bulk of AdS.

Explicit black hole thermodynamics in natural variables

Abstract:We consider the general thermal asymptotically flat Kerr-Newman black holes in 4d Einstein-Maxwell theory. Even though their thermodynamics has been understood for decades, the Gibbs free energy and on-shell action are only known implicitly as functions of the standard chemical potentials. Using the so-called left and right moving (or holomorphic and anti-holomorphic) variables related to the chemical potentials on both the outer and the inner horizons, we are able to present explicit and very simple expressions for all quantities. We discuss various limits in the parameter space, remarkably finding a smooth BPS limit allowing direct access to the extremal surface. In the BPS limit the anti-holomorphic part of the on-shell action vanishes identically, leading automatically to the holomorphic expression expected microscopically. This gives us confidence that the newly defined thermal partition function in terms of these variables is the natural candidate for a full microscopic description.

Near-Horizon Geometry and the Entropy of a Minimally Coupled Scalar Field in the Kerr Black Hole

Abstract:In this article we will discuss a Lorentzian sector calculation of the entropy of a minimally coupled scalar field in the Kerr black hole background. We will use the brick wall model of G.'t Hooft. In the Kerr black hole, complications arise due to the absence of a global timelike Killing field and the presence of the ergosphere. Nevertheless, it is possible to calculate the entropy of a thin shell of matter field in the near-horizon region using the brick wall model. The corresponding leading order entropy of the nonsuperradiant modes is found to be proportional to the area of the horizon and is logarithmically divergent. Thus, to the leading order, the entropy of a three-dimensional system in the near-horizon region is proportional to the boundary surface. This aspect is also valid in the Schwarzschild black hole. The corresponding internal energy remains finite if the entropy is chosen to be of the order of the black hole entropy itself. For a fixed value of the brick wall cut-off, the leading order entropy in the Kerr black hole is found to be half of the corresponding term in the Schwarzschild black hole. This is due to rotation and is consistent with the preferential emission of particles in the Kerr black hole with azimuthal angular momentum in the same direction as that of the black hole itself. However, we can obtain the Schwarzschild case expression by including a subleading term and taking the appropriate slow rotation limit. In this version, we will discuss a sub-leading term for the scalar field entropy in Schwarzschild black hole. This term reduces to an expression similar to the corresponding flat spacetime entropy in the limit when radius of event horizon is vanishing.

Logarithmic Corrections to Kerr Thermodynamics

Abstract:Recent work has shown that loop corrections from massless particles generate $\frac{3}{2}\log T_{\text{Hawking}}$ corrections to black hole entropy which dominate the thermodynamics of cold near-extreme charged black holes. Here we adapt this analysis to near-extreme Kerr black holes. Like AdS$_2\times S^2$, the Near-Horizon Extreme Kerr (NHEK) metric has a family of normalizable zero modes corresponding to reparametrizations of boundary time. The path integral over these zero modes leads to an infrared divergence in the one-loop approximation to the Euclidean NHEK partition function. We regulate this divergence by retaining the leading finite temperature correction in the NHEK scaling limit. This "not-NHEK" geometry lifts the eigenvalues of the zero modes, rendering the path integral infrared finite. The quantum-corrected near-extremal entropy exhibits $\frac{3}{2}\log T_{\text{Hawking}}$ behavior characteristic of the Schwarzian model and predicts a lifting of the ground state degeneracy for the extremal Kerr black hole.

Abstract:The entropy of a Schwarzschild black hole, as computed via the semiclassical Euclidean path integral in a stationary phase approximation, is determined not by the on-shell value of the action (which vanishes), but by the Gibbons--Hawking--York boundary term evaluated on a suitable hypersurface, which can be chosen arbitrarily far away from the horizon. For this reason, the black hole singularity seemingly has no influence on the Bekenstein--Hawking area law. In this Essay we estimate how a regular black hole core, deep inside a Euclidean black hole of mass $M$ and generated via a UV regulator length scale $\ell > 0$, affects the black hole entropy. The contributions are suppressed by factors of $\ell/(2GM)$; demanding exact agreement with the area law as well as a self-consistent first law of black hole thermodynamics at all orders, however, demands that these contributions vanish identically via uniformly bounded curvature. This links the limiting curvature hypothesis to black hole thermodynamics.

Abstract:Some problems have been found as to the definition of entropy of black hole being applied to the extremal Kerr-Newman case, which has conflicts with the third law of thermodynamics. We have proposed a new modification for the near extremal one, which not only obeys the third law, but also does not conflict with other results in black hole thermodynamics. Then we proved that the inner horizon has temperature and proposed that the inner horizon contributes to the entropy of the near extremal one so that the entropy of it has a modified form and vanishes at absolute zero temperature.
