Sex Hormone Levels and Their Correlations with Aggressive Symptoms in Women of Childbearing Age with Manic Episodes of Bipolar Disorder

Abstract:Objective To explore the sex hormone levels and their correlations with aggressive symptoms in women of reproductive age with manic episodes of bipolar disorder.Methods A total of 126 female patients with bipolar disorder and manic episode at reproductive age were selected as the study group（62 cases in the the non-drug group and 64 cases in the the drug group）, and 125 healthy women at reproductive age were selected as the control group. General data of the study group and control group were collected by general data questionnaire. Young mania rating scale（YMRS） and modified overt aggression scale（MOAS） were used to assess mania symptoms and aggressive behavior, and serum sex hormone levels were measured in the two groups.Results The difference analysis of the three groups showed that the serum levels of follicle stimulating hormone（FSH）, prolactin（PROL）, estradiol（E 2 ） were significantly different（F=5.171, 31.634, 4.040, P=0.024, ＜0.001, 0.046）. Compared with the control group, the serum PROL level of the non-drug group and the drug group were increased（t=17.230, 20.320, P＜0.001）, the serum FSH level of the drug group was lower（t=1.347, P=0.003）, and the serum E 2 level was increased（t=29.127, P=0.045）. There were no significant differences in serum sex hormone levels between the non-drug group and the drug group（P＞0.05）. In the study group, the serum level of progesterone（PROG） was negatively correlated with the score of knowledge factor（r=-0.179, P=0.045）, and the serum level of testosterone（TESTO） was positively correlated with the score of language and thought form disorder factor, the score of sabotage and aggression factor and the total score of YMRS（r=0.213, 0.228, 0.213, P=0.017, 0.010, 0.017）. In the study group, PROG level was positively correlated with the score of self-aggression factor（r=0.223, P=0.012）, and TESTO level was positively correlated with the score of property aggression factor（r=0.193, P=0.030）.Conclusion The level of serum PROL in women of childbearing age with bipolar disorder manic episode is increased, and the use of drugs may cause abnormal levels of FSH and E 2 . The serum levels of PROG and TESTO are correlated with the level of aggression.
