The effects of health education promotion on preventing birth defects in Jiangsu province

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the effect of interventions on preventing birth defects project with the KAP questionnaire.Methods Knowledge,attitude and practice (KAP) about preventing birth defects among 3600 families in Jiangsu province (13 cities) were investigated.A comparison with the baseline investigation was made between before and after intervention.Results The risk factors of age, sex,culture degree,occupation,the fwst age of marriage,income of family (<1500 and 15000) affect the intervention of birth defects significantly.After the intervention,the awareness of about birth defects in- creased 13.77,95% CI:(5.41～22.32).The significant of preventing birth defects knowledge was found between area of the south,the middle and the north of Jiangsu.The proportion of 19 right answers were in- creased,the proportion of 1 right answers was not changed,and the proportion of 3 right answers were re- duced after intervention.Conclusion This study is effective to improve knowledge,attitude and practice of preventing birth defects,and the knowledge of the persons included of worker,farmer,low culture degree and low family income was enhanced.
