Abstract:Post transition metal chalcohalides are an emerging class of semiconductor materials for optoelectronic applications. Within this class, bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI) is of particular interest due to its high environmental stability, low toxicity, and defect tolerance considered typical of 'ns 2 ' materials. Here we fabricate BiOI thin films using a solution-processed method that affords pin-hole free highly pure films without any residual carbon or other contaminant species. Based on these films, solution processed all-inorganic solar cells with an architecture ITO/NiO x /BiOI/ZnO/Al are fabricated for the first time. Additional device improvements are realised by templating BiOI thin film growth to attain efficiencies that rival some of the best vacuum deposited devices. The BiOI thin films and devices outlined here are an excellent platform for the further development of solution processed bismuth chalcohalide optoelectronic devices.

Solvothermal synthesis of BiOI flower-like microspheres for efficient photocatalytic degradation of BPA under visible light irradiation

Abstract:In this study, BiOI was fabricated via a solvothermal synthesis method. Based on characterization using XRD, BET, SEM, TEM and XPS, layered-structure BiOI with a pure orthorhombic phase and flower-like microsphere morphology was successfully prepared. Compared with P25 TiO2, BiOI had higher photocatalytic activity towards 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane (BPA) degradation under visible light irradiation. The results of photocurrent generation also proved that BiOI had excellent photocurrent response to visible light. Hence, the good photocatalytic performance of BiOI was attributed to its enhanced light absorption and separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. ESR measurements further confirmed that hydroxyl radicals were generated and involved in the BPA photodegradation process.

Abstract:Flexible organic solar cells (OSCs) are very promising for use in portable power supply devices due to the advantages of low‐cost, light‐weight, and flexibility. However, the efficiencies of flexible OSCs are limited by the flexible transparent electrodes owing to their nonoptimal electrical, optical, and mechanical properties. To address these challenges, leaf‐like biomimetic electrodes are proposed to achieve an efficient light capture and glossy surface for a high‐efficiency flexible OSC. To mimic the internal anatomy of the leaf, the conformable electrode stack consists of a flexible polyimide substrate, light‐scattering polystyrene spheres, zinc oxide protecting layer, and electrically conductive silver nanowires to obtain a high transmittance, low sheet resistance, and low surface roughness. A record‐high power conversion efficiency of 16.1% is realized by a flexible OSC with the biomimetic electrode design, comparable to those rigid devices on glass. Moreover, the flexible OSC on this biomimetic electrode exhibits a robust bendability against flexural strain, retaining 85% of the initial efficiency after 5000 bending cycles at a radius of curvature as small as 1.0 mm.

Abstract:Multilayered photovoltaic absorbers have triggered widespread attention for their unique structure and properties. However, multilayered materials in the randomly oriented polycrystalline thin-film lead to ineffective carrier transport and collection, which hinders the process of achieving high-performance solar cells. Herein, this issue is tackled by producing the three-dimensional (3D) heterojunction BiI(3)nanosheets (NSs) solar cells, which embed vertically aligned monocrystalline BiI(3)NSs into spiro-OMeTAD. The preferred orientation of BiI(3)NSs and large p-n junction areas of 3D heterojunction structure enable a strong light absorption and effective carrier transport and collection, and thus a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 1.45% was achieved. Moreover, this PCE is the highest ever reported for BiI(3)based solar cells to our best knowledge. Moreover, the nonencapsulated device remained 96% of the initial PCE after 24 h continuous one sun illumination at similar to 70% humidity condition, and 82% of the initial PCE after 1-month storage at similar to 30% humidity condition.

Abstract:This research represents a highly enhanced visible light photocatalytic removal of 450ppb level of nitric oxide (NO) in air by utilizing flower-like hierarchical porous BiOI/BiOCl composites synthesized by a room temperature template free method for the first time. The facile synthesis method avoids high temperature treatment, use of organic precursors and production of undesirable organic byproducts during synthesis process. The result indicated that the as-prepared BiOI/BiOCl composites samples were solid solution and were self-assembled hierarchically with single-crystal nanoplates. The aggregation of the self-assembled nanoplates resulted in the formation of 3D hierarchical porous architecture containing tri-model mesopores. The coupling to BiOI with BiOCl led to down-lowered valence band (VB) and up-lifted conduction band (CB) in contrast to BiOI, making the composites suitable for visible light excitation. The BiOI/BiOCl composites samples exhibited highly enhanced visible light photocatalytic activity for removal of NO in air due to the large surface areas and pore volume, hierarchical structure and modified band structure, exceeding that of P25, BiOI, C-doped TiO2 and Bi2WO6. This research results could provide a cost-effective approach for the synthesis of porous hierarchical materials and enhancement of photocatalyst performance for environmental and energetic applications owing to its low cost and easy scaling up.

Abstract:A hydrangea-like BiOBr/Bi2WO6 Z-scheme heterojunction was synthesized via ionic liquid-hydrothermal method for the first time. The hydrangea-like BiOBr microspheres were firstly synthesized by ionic liquid method, which not only provided “Bi3+”, but also were as substrate for Bi2WO6 forming. Then the outer part of the BiOBr microsphere was designed to react with Na2WO4 and form Bi2WO6 nanosheet with the aid of acid. This 3D/2D BiOBr/Bi2WO6 “Core-shell”-like material had relatively high BET surface and large pore volume and exhibited a superior optoelectronic performance and photocatalytic activity on reduction of heavy metal ions and degradation of drug and organic dye. The physical and chemical property of BiOBr/Bi2WO6 composites with different amount of Bi2WO6 were studied by XRD, XPS, FE-SEM, TEM, UV–vis diffuse reflection spectra (DRS) and BET surface area analyzer et. al. The photodegradation mechanism was also proposed based on the experimental results.

Boosting Efficiency and Stability of Organic Solar Cells Using Ultralow-Cost BiOCl Nanoplates As Hole Transporting Layers.

Abstract:A novel nanomaterial, bismuth oxychloride nanoplates (BiOCl NPs), was first applied in organic solar cells (OSCs) as hole transporting layers (HTLs). It is worth noting that the BiOCl NPs can be facilely synthesized at ∼1/200 of the cost of the commercial PEDOT:PSS and well dissolved in green solvents. Different from the PEDOT:PSS interlayer, the deposition of BiOCl HTL is free of post-treatment at elevated temperature, which reduces device fabrication complexity. To demonstrate the universality of BiOCl in improving photovoltaic performance, OSCs containing various representative active layers were investigated. The power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of the P3HT:PC61BM, PTB7-Th:PC71BM, and PM6:Y6-based OSCs with the BiOCl HTL boosted from 3.62, 8.78, and 15.63 to 4.24, 9.92, and 16.11%, respectively, compared to the PEDOT:PSS-based ones. It was found that the superior performances of the BiOCl-based OSCs are mainly attributed to the sufficient oxygen vacancies and improved interfacial contact. Moreover, the BiOCl-based OSCs show a much better stability than the cells with the PEDOT:PSS interfacial layer.
Facile fabrication of BiOI/Bi 2 WO 6 Z-scheme heterojunction composites with a three-dimensional structure for efficient degradation of pollutants

Abstract:Three-dimensional BiOI/Bi 2 WO 6 Z-scheme photocatalysts were synthesized by one-step hydrothermal method. Detailed characterization via SEM and TEM revealed that these photocatalysts exhibit a unique three-dimensional flower-like structure, composed of two-dimensional sheets. The results of photocatalysis mechanism analysis demonstrated that the BiOI/Bi 2 WO 6 heterojunctions have formed a Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism. Specifically, electrons transfer from the Bi 2 WO 6 conduction band to the BiOI valence band, facilitating both enhanced separation of photogenerated charges and the preservation of the strong reducibility of BiOI conduction band electrons and the strong oxidation of Bi 2 WO 6 valence band holes. This dual effect leads to increased generation of free radicals and a consequent improvement in photocatalytic property. Remarkably, when the molar ratio of BiOI/Bi 2 WO 6 is set at 40%, the first-order reaction rate constant reaches 0.089 min −1 , which is nearly 5.9 times that of pure Bi 2 WO 6 .

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) flower-like BiOI hierarchical structures have been successfully synthesized by a solution route at room temperature. The obtained sample was systematically studied by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It is noteworthy that no surfactant or assisted reagent was needed during the formation of this uniform flower-like structure. It was proposed that primary nanoflakes of Bi-EtOH complexes were initially formed in the solution, and then anisotropic growth led to the development of 3D flowerlike structures. In addition, the photocatalytic property of the sample under visible-light was investigated with three types of dye: heteropolyaromatic (Methylene Blue (MB)), azoic (Methyl Orange (MO)) and phenol (rhodamine B (RhB)). High photocatalytic activity was observed for the phenol dye RhB. The electrochemical hydrogen storage properties were also investigated.
Ultrathin-Layer Structure of BiOI Microspheres Decorated on N-Doped Biochar With Efficient Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:Bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI) is among the most potential photocatalysts due to its photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation. However, the photoinduced carrier separation efficiency has limited the BiOI photocatalytic activity. Herein, we utilized the direct carbonation of sapless cattail grass to obtain N-doped hierarchical structure cattail-based carbon (NCC). The NCC not only served as an appropriate host but also as a self-sacrificing template for BiOI microspheres for the preparation of BiOI/NCC composite material. The acidic solutions (HCl or AcOH) were used as a solvent which helped to obtain a well-defined micro/nano hierarchical BiOI microspheres composed of ultrathin nanosheets. Thus, BiOI/NCC composites were successfully designed through the in-situ self-template rapid dissolution-recrystallization mechanism. Additionally, numerous well-contacted interfaces were formed between NCC and BiOI, which served as an electron-acceptor bridge function for ultrafast electron transfer process in order to hinder the electron-hole pairs recombination. On account of the multiple synergistic effects of micro/nano hierarchical microsphere structure, ultrathin nanosheets, and well-contacted interface, the as-prepared BiOI/NCC composites exhibit the superior degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) than pure BiOI under visible light irradiation.
Enhancing the intrinsic properties of flower-like BiOI by S-doping toward excellent photocatalytic performances

Abstract:A facile strategy was proposed to fabricate the S-doped flower-like BiOI microspheres (S-BiOI) for boosting the photocatalytic performance of BiOI via engineering the surface oxygen vacancy and exposed {001} crystal planes. The S-doping generated oxygen vacancies in BiOI lattice structure to create point defects and exposed {001} crystal planes, resulting in a decrease in bandgap and an enhancement in charges separation, which could significantly hasten the photocatalytic reaction. The concentration of CH4N2S was a key factor to promote the Cr(VI) reduction activities. The optimized S-BiOI1.25 presented a superior Cr(VI) removal efficiency of 100% for 60 min, which Cr(VI) reduction rate was 11.3 times higher than the pristine BiOI and still remained 97.5% Cr(VI) removal after 5 cycles. DFT calculation confirmed that the bandgap of the S-BiOI was narrowed compared to that of BiOI, but the S-BiOI still remained the intrinsic band structure of the pristine BiOI.

Study of the Structure, Electronic and Optical Properties of BiOI/Rutile-TiO2 Heterojunction by the First-Principle Calculation

Abstract:Using the first-principle calculation that is based on the density functional theory (DFT), our group gains some insights of the structural, electronic and optical properties of two brand new types of BiOI/TiO2 heterojunctions: 1I-terminated BiOI {001} surface/TiO2 (1I-BiOI/TiO2) and BiO-terminated BiOI {001} surface/TiO2 (BiO-BiOI/TiO2). The calculation illustrates that BiOI/TiO2 heterojunction has excellent mechanical stability, and it shows that there is a great possibility for the BiOI/TiO2 heterojunction to be used in visible-light range, hence the photocatalytic ability can be enhanced dramatically. Especially, from the calculation, we discovered that there are two specific properties: the band-gap of 1I-BiOI/TiO2 heterojunction reduces to 0.28 eV, and the BiO-BiOI/TiO2 semiconductor material changes to n-type. The calculated band offset (BOs) for 1I-BiOI/TiO2 heterojunction indicates that the interfacial structure contributes a lot to a suitable band alignment which can disperse the photo-generated carriers into the opposite sides of the interface, so this could effectively weaken the electron-hole recombination. Meanwhile, the built-in potential around the interface accelerates the movement of the photo-generated electron-hole pairs. We believe this is the reason that the BiOI/TiO2 material shows perfect photocatalytic performance. This paper can provide theoretical support for the related research, especially the further research of the BiOI-based material.

Facile Fabrication of BiOI Decorated NaNbO3 Cubes: A P–n Junction Photocatalyst with Improved Visible-Light Activity

Abstract:To enhance the separation efficiency of photo-generated carriers, a p-n junction photocatalyst BiOI/NaNbO3 has been fabricated by a facile method. The obtained samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, HRTEM, PL, N-2 sorption-desorption and DRS. DRS results showed that the light absorption edges of BiOI/NaNbO3 hybrids were red-shifted with the increase of BiOI content. The SEM and TEM images revealed that the BiOI was widely decorated over the surfaces of NaNbO3 cubes. The formation of p-n heterojunction at their interfaces was proved by the HRTEM image. The visible light-driven photocatalytic activity was evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solution. Compared with single NaNbO3 and BiOI, the BiOI/NaNbO3 hybrid photocatalysts have exhibited significantly enhanced activities. Meanwhile, the mass ratio of BiOI/NaNbO3 displayed important influence on the MB degradation. The hybrid photocatalyst with BiOI content of 40% performed the optimal activity. This activity enhancement should be attributed to the strong visible light absorption, the high migration and separation efficiency of photo-induced carriers. The photocurrent and PL measurements confirmed that the interfacial charge separation efficiency was greatly improved by coupling BiOI with NaNbO3. Controlled experiments proved that the degradation of pollutants was mainly attributed to the oxidizing ability of the generated holes (h(+)), center dot O-2(-), and center dot OH radicals. In-situ preparation of S-scheme BiOI/BiVO4 heterojunctions with enhanced photocatalytic performance

Abstract:Close interfacial contact between two photocatalysts can effectively separate photoexcited carriers, improving photocatalytic capacity of the photocatalysts. Herein, S-scheme BiOI/BiVO4 composites were successfully synthesized by a two-step synthetic strategy with the existence of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide ([EMIm]I), NH4VO3 and Bi(NO3)3⋅5H2O. [EMIm]I serves as a solvent to provide iodine source for the heterojunctions to produce small lamellar BiOI anchored on BiVO4. Electrochemical and surface photovoltage spectroscopy (SPS) measurements confirm that S-scheme heterojunctions greatly inhibits the recombination of photoinduced carriers. Photocatalytic removal rate constant of rhodamine B (RhB) and tetracycline (TC) by BiOI/BiVO4 composites is significantly enhanced with visible light, the 5% sample exhibits the highest photocatalytic performance, which is 14.7 and 4.1 times of that of the reference BiVO4 for removal of RhB and TC, separately. The 5% sample can effectively treat Chinese Baijiu industrial wastewater obtained from a local brewery, the removal of total organic carbon (TOC) of the wastewater can achieve about 76% after visible light irradiation for 4 h. Cyclic experiments show that the BiOI/BiVO4 heterojunctions exhibit outstanding stability. The fabricated BiOI/BiVO4 heterojunctions with high activity and persistence have potential applications in water purification. This work proffers a significant reference for in-situ fabrication of S-scheme heterojunctions using ionic liquid.

Abstract:The construction of S-scheme heterojunctions has proved to be an efficient strategy to overcome the drawbacks of individual photocatalytic materials. Nevertheless, fabricating an intimate interface with strong interfacial coupling in the S-scheme heterojunctions is a challenge. Given that Bi2O2(OH)(NO3) and BiOI share similar [Bi2O2]2+ unit slices in their crystal structures, we successfully prepare S-scheme BiOI@Bi2O2(OH)(NO3) heterojunction nanosheets with tight binding by linking [Bi2O2]2+ and I– by the in situ growth of BiOI layers onto the surface of Bi2O2(OH)(NO3) nanosheets. In comparison to a single Bi2O2(OH)(NO3) and BiOI nanosheet, the S-scheme heterojunction shows a much increased photocatalytic degradation efficiency for organic pollutants. The significant increase in photocatalytic performance is not only attributed to the formed S-scheme heterojunction, which is capable of establishing an ideal internal electric field (IEF), but also more critically, the carrier separation is greatly facilitated by the tight interfacial interaction between semiconductor nanosheets. This synthetic route provides a constructive idea to be extended to rationally design S-scheme heterojunctions with an intimately bonded interface.

Abstract:BiOCl/BiOI composites with a visible light response were prepared by a simple hydrothermal method. Even though both single BiOCl and BiOI show low photocatalytic activity, BiOCl/BiOI composites provide enhanced efficiency in decomposing organic compounds including Methyl Orange (MO) and Rhodamine B (RhB). Furthermore, the 20%BiOCl/BiOI composite shows the highest efficiency for decomposing MO, while the highest performance is observed for the degradation of RhB over 70%BiOCl/BiOI composite. A possible photocatalytic mechanism has been proposed based on the relative experiments and the band positions of BiOCl and BiOI.

Abstract:A novel hierarchical BiOI/Bi2MoO6 composites are prepared by a facile precipitation-deposition method. The prepared photocatalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS). The resulting BiOI/Bi2MoO6 composites exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity and stability towards the degradation of methylene blue (MB) and bisphenol A (BPA) in aqueous solution under visible light irradiation. The optimal composite with 25% BiOI content shows the highest photocatalytic activity for MB degradation. The enhanced photocatalytic activity is mainly attributed to the formation of BiOI/Bi2MoO6 heterojunction that can facilitate the separation and transfer of the photo-generated charge carriers. The roles of active species in the photocatalytic process are discussed by using different types of active species scavengers. Meanwhile, combined with the photoluminescence (PL) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), the degradation mechanism of the photocatalysts is proposed. It is hoped that the work could provide valuable information on the design of specific structure materials with more excellent properties and set the foundation for the further industrial application. Inorganic photovoltaic cells based on BiFeO3: spontaneous polarization, lattice matching, light polarization and their relationship to photovoltaic performance

Abstract:Inorganic ferroelectric perovskite oxides are more stable than hybrid perovskites. However, their solar energy harvest efficiency is not so good. Here, by constructing a series of BiFeO3 based devices (solar cells), we investigated three factors that influence the photovoltaic performance, including spontaneous polarization, terminated ions species in the interface between BiFeO3 and the electrode, and polarized light irradiation. This work was carried out in the framework of density functional theory combined with non-equilibrium Green's function theory under built in electric field or finite bias. The results showed that 1. the photocurrent is larger only under a suitable electronic band gap rather than larger spontaneous polarization; 2. the photocurrent reaches the largest in Bi ions terminated interface than in the case of Fe ion or O ion with SrTiO3 electrode; 3. the photocurrent could be largely enhanced if the polarized direction of the monochromatic light is perpendicular to the spontaneous polarization direction. The results would deepen the understanding of some experimental results of BiFeO3 based solar cells.
