The changes of serum uric acid levels in schizophrenic patients with tardive dyskinesia

Abstract:Objective To investigate the possible roles of uric acid in the pathophysiology of tardive dyskinesia(TD) by comparison of serum uric acid levels in schizophrenic patients with TD,without TD and normal volunteers.Methods In present study,30 schizophrenic patients with TD(TD group),32 without TD(non-TD group) and normal volunteers were recruited by using the Simpson Scale,the general information(e.g.Sex,age,illness duration,weight and so on) was collected.Psychopathological symptoms were assessed by using the positive and negative symptom scale(PANSS),the severities of TD were assessed by abnormal involuntary movement scale(AIMS).The levels of uric acid were measured by automatic bio-chemistry analyzer,which were compared in TD group,non-TD group and normal volunteers.The relationship of the serum uric acid levels and the AIMS total scores were analyzed in TD group.Results ① The concentraition of serum uric acid in the normal group(338.97士81.29umol/l),TD group(222.2±69.53umol/l) and non-TD group(270.46±89.89umol/l) had significant difference(P<0.05),② The total scores of AIMS in TD group were negatively correlated with levels of uric acid(r=-0.391,P<0.05).Conclusion Uric acid may be involved in the pathophysiological process of TD in schizophrenic patients.
