Correlation Study on Self-identity,Personality and Mental Health of 188 Medical Freshmen

Abstract:Objective:To explore the relations between freshmen's self-identity status,personality characteristics and mental health status.Methods:188 new students were asked to complete the questionnaires of mental health scale and personality scale from the China college students mental health evaluation system,and eollnge students self- identity status scale.Results:①the most status of identity is achievement(43.1%),then the identity diffusion (30.9%);②male students in compare with female,were more likely in achievement status(60.7±13.8/53.9±11.4,P<0.001),more tough-minded,accommodating(45.2±6.2/43.1±6.0,23.1±5.6/20.2±5.7,27.4±3.4/26.2±3.3,P≤0.01),and have more compulsive symptoms(16.7±5.7/15.1±4.8,P=0.025).The sin- gletons were more likely in achievement status(59.2±12.1/54.5±14.0,P=0.017),more active(53.0±8.8/ 49.3±10.0,P=0.005),but had no difference with the non-singletons in symptoms(P>0.406);③the achieve- ment status had obvious negative correlation with depression,dependency(r=-0.17～-0.24),the diffusion status had obvious positive correlation with depression,social-withdrawal,and impulsion(r=0.15～0.34);④active,ac- commodating,tough-minded personality characteristics had obviously negative correlation with mental symptoms(r= -0.16～-0.56).Conclusions:encourage college students to form the achievement ego-identity status,to be ac- tive,accommodating and tough-minded,will be helpful for their psychological health.
