Expression of Hypoxia Inducible Factor-1α in Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma and Its Clinical Value

Abstract:Objective To investigate the expression level of hypoxia inducible factor-1α(HIF-1α) in primary tumor of nasopharyngeal carcinoma,and to assess the prognostic impact of HIF-1α in these patients.Methods The immunohistochemical expression of HIF-1α was evaluated in nasopharyngeal carcinoma biopsies from 59 patients.The follow-up outcomes of all patients were collected.Results The staining of HIF-1α protein was confined to the tumor cell nuclei without any consistent staining of the cytoplasm.There was 67.8%sections with HIF-1α-positive tumor.The positive HIF-1α expression was associated with higher distant metastasis,worse overall and disease-free survival,and the level of HIF-1α expression had no effect on locoregional control.Conclusion These results suggest that most of patients have positive expression HIF-1α,and its expression level may have prognostic significance in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma.
