Abstract:Chitosan oligosaccharide is natural in source and abundant in resources. It has the functions of lowering blood fat, anti-tumor and inhibiting pathogenic microorganisms. The further degraded Chi?tosan oligosaccharide is a green additive, and has biological functions such as anti-oxidation, enhance?ment of immunity, regulation of intestinal flora and the like. In the large environment of feed forbidden resistance, Chitosan oligosaccharide has the potential to partially replace antibiotics. Abstract:Unconventional animal feeds present distinct features and considerable variations. However, their efficacy in monogastric animals is hindered by high levels of anti-nutritional elements and subpar palatability. Feed fermentation could offer a solution to these issues. Moreover, fermented unconventional feeds deliver notable economic advantages and represent a viable alternative to antibiotic growth promoters, particularly in the context of antibiotic restrictions, promising considerable potential. This review provides an in-depth exploration of the types, characteristics, fermentation processes, application outcomes, associated challenges, and prospects of fermented unconventional feeds in monogastric animals. We anticipate that this comprehensive overview will serve as a valuable reference for developing and utilizing unconventional feed resources in the feed industry.

Probiotics compatibility of herbal preparations on effects of growth performance and immune organs in broilers

Abstract:In this paper,the probiotic preparation of Lactobacillus plantarum,Saccharomyces cerevisiae an d Bacillus subtilis were used in combination with digestion and anti-viral Chinese medicine feed additives.To study the effect on growth performance and immune organs of AA broilers.A total of 180 broilers were randomly divided into 4 groups with 3 replicates of 15 each.Control group(CK)feed basal diet,Ⅱ,Ⅲ and Ⅳ group feed the basal diet with 0.05% Chinese medicine preparation,0.05% probiotic preparation, 0.05% probiotics and 0.05% Chinese medicine preparation.Feeding period was 35 d.The results showed that the addition of probiotics and Chinese herbal medicine to the diet increased the daily gain of AA broilers at various stages,and the feed utilization rate was improved obviously.The daily gain of group Ⅳ was increased by 9.08%(P < 0.05),and the feed conversion ratio was decreased by 6.62% (P < 0.05)compared with CK group at 1 ~ 21 days.The daily gain of group Ⅳ was increased by 9.69% (P < 0.05),and the feed conversion ratio was decreased by 8.96% (P < 0.05)at 21 ~ 35 day.The daily gain of group Ⅳ was increased by 12.97% (P < 0.05)compared with CK group,and the feed conversion ratio was decreased by 9.17% (P < 0.05)at 21 ~ 35 days.In addition, continuous feeding probiotics and traditional Chinese medicine compatibility preparation 35 d could improve AA broiler thymus, spleen and french capsule index. The spleen index in group Ⅱ,Ⅲ,Ⅳwere increased by 13.81%(P > 0.05),14.90%(P < 0.05),30.21%(P <0.05).The thymus index in group Ⅱ,Ⅲ,Ⅳwere increased by 4.11%(P > 0.05),3.89%(P > 0.05),8.80% (P < 0.05).The french capsule index in group Ⅱ, Ⅲ, Ⅳwere inareased by 13.06%,13.86%,28.20%(P <0.05).The results showed that the combination of proboscis and traditional Chinese medicine could significantly improve the growth performance immune organs of AA broilers in 1 ~ 35 days.Both of them had synergistic effect,which could be used in the breeding of meat and poultry part of the effect of antibiotics.

Abstract:The perturbation of gut health is a common yet unresolved problem in broiler chicken production. Antibiotics used as growth promoters have remarkably improved the broiler production industry with high feed conversion efficiency and reduced intestinal problems. However, the misuse of antibiotics has also led to the increase in the development of antibiotic resistance and antibiotic residues in the meat. Many countries have enacted laws prohibiting the use of antibiotics in livestock production because of the increasing concerns from the consumers and the public. Consequently, one of the most significant discussions in the poultry industry is currently antibiotic-free livestock production. However, the biggest challenge in animal husbandry globally is the complete removal of antibiotics. The necessity to venture into antibiotic-free production has led researchers to look for alternatives to antibiotics in broiler chicken production. Many strategies can be used to replace the use of antibiotics in broiler farming. In recent years, many studies have been conducted to identify functional feed additives with similar beneficial effects as antibiotic growth promoters. Attention has been focused on prebiotics, probiotics, organic acids, emulsifiers, enzymes, essential oils, tributyrin, and medium-chain fatty acids. In this review, we focused on recent discoveries on gut health maintenance through the use of these functional feed additives as alternatives to antibiotics in the past 10 years to provide novel insights into the design of antibiotic-free feeds.

Abstract:SUMMARY Nutraceuticals, including amino acids, carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins, have gained more attention, owing to multiple nutritional and health benefits, including maintaining the normal physiological status and disease prevention, thereby improving production performance of poultry birds. In commercial poultry production systems, chicks do not have access to feed and water for about 24–48 h during transportation between hatchery and production farm. This delay time poses negative effects on early feed intake, organ development, natural exposure to microbiota and immune sensitisation of chicks. Early feeding via in ovo inoculation of nutrients and feed additives to the developing embryo during 12th or 17th to 18th days of incubation significantly mitigates the adverse effects of starvation and enhances post-hatch performance and health of poultry birds during pre-andpost-hatch periods. The direct administration of various supplements, nutrients, drugs, vaccines, immunostimulants and biological substances through an in ovo route has diverse advantages including boosted health status, immunity and production performance of post-hatch poultry birds. Early feeding of nutrients during embryonic life has numerous benefits, such as improvements in weight gain, feed efficiency, growth rate and digestive organ development; decrease in morbidity and mortality of embryo; reduction in skeletal disorder; and boosted immunity, muscular development and meat yield of poultry birds. Furthermore, early in ovo feeding of nutraceuticals has provided better protection against a number of infectious pathogens than post-hatch supplementation. The current review aimed to provide a promising insight for the promotion of in ovo technology in order to supply different nutraceuticals (amino acid, vitamins, minerals and carbohydrates) directly into the developing embryo to achieve an improvement in post-hatch growth, immune responses and antioxidant defence along with the development of gastrointestinal tract. Additionally, this review highlights the future of in ovo technology as a strategy to improve the productive performance of poultry birds.

Abstract:Probiotics has the advantage of non-pollution,non-toxicity and non-residue and is considered as the best effective substitute to the antibiotics.However,at present,the data concerning the effects of probiotics are often contradictory.It is urgent to seek the ways to improve its effects.The effects of probiotics may be improved by several methods: selection and cultivation of more efficient strains,combination of several probiotics,combination of probiotics and synergistically feed additives.However,the combination of probiotics and the synergistically feed additives seems to be the best way of potentiating the effects of probiotics and will be widely used in practice.

Abstract:Poultry is one of the most consumed sources of animal protein around the world. To meet the global demands for poultry meat and eggs, it is necessary to improve their nutrition to sustain the poultry industry. However, the poultry industry faces several challenges, including feedstuff availability, the banning of antibiotics as growth promoters, and several environmental stressors. Therefore, there is a critical need to include available nutraceuticals in the diet to sustain the poultry industry. Nutraceuticals are natural chemical substances that positively influence animal physiological and productive traits. Botanical products (such as fenugreek seeds, ginger roots, and olive leaves) are among the most commonly used nutraceuticals and are gradually gaining popularity in the poultry industry due to their immense benefits in nutrition and therapeutic properties. They can be added to the diet separately or in combination (as a natural antioxidant and immunostimulant) to improve poultry health and production. Botanical products are rich in essential oils and essential fatty acids, which have multiple benefits on the animal's digestive system, such as activating the digestive enzymes and restoring microbiota balance, enhancing poultry health, and production. These nutraceuticals have been shown to stimulate the expression of several genes related to growth, metabolism, and immunity. In addition, the essential oil supplementation in poultry diets up-regulated the expression of some crucial genes associated with nutrient transportation (such as glucose transporter-2 and sodium-glucose cotransporter-1). Previous studies have suggested that supplementation of botanical compounds increased broiler body weight and hen egg production by approximately 7% and 15%, respectively. Furthermore, the supplementation of botanical compounds enhanced the reproductive efficiency of hens and the semen quality of roosters by 13%. This review article discusses the significant effects of some botanical products in the poultry industry and how they can benefit poultry, especially in light of the ban on antibiotics as growth promoters.

Abstract:Application of herbs and natural medicines have shown to have no negative side effects, with high effectiveness to improve productivity. Usage of medicinal plants can increase gut function, improve hepatic function, inhibition of prooxidant enzymes, enhance antioxidant content, improve shelf life, enhance sensorial value, better nutritive value, improve both health and consumers preference, enhance calcium and other minerals, increase vitamin B and folate, and enhance immunity. The most important medicinal plants with antiparasitic activities are green tea, guar bean, pine bark, grape seed, barberry root bark, Rangoon creeper, olive tree, and wormwood. Some other important medicinal plants in poultry industry are black pepper, nettle, shrubby sophora, Aleppo oak, garlic, red cedar, ginger, mint, tobacco, turmeric, aloe vera, etc. The application of herbal medicines can be considered as an important alternative to treating parasitic infections. In organic broiler production with application of medicinal plants, decreasing hormones, growth promoters and antibiotics should be considered as well as paying more attention to selection of appropriate organic feed management with considering higher production. This article aims to survey on the importance of application of natural products and medicinal plants in poultry industry by considering secondary metabolites such as triterpenoids, coumarins, alkaloids, tannins, and flavonoids due to their anti-inflammatory, antiparasitic, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and astringent properties.

Abstract:Poultry, a vital economic animal, provide a high-quality protein source for human nutrition. Over the past decade, the poultry industry has witnessed substantial achievements in breeding, precision feeding, and welfare farming. However, there are still many challenges restricting the sustainable development of the poultry industry. First, overly focused breeding strategies on production performance have been shown to induce metabolic diseases in poultry. Second, a lack of robust methods for assessing the nutritional requirements poses a challenge to the practical implementation of precision feeding. Third, antibiotic alternatives and feed safety management remain pressing concerns within the poultry industry. Lastly, environmental pollution and inadequate welfare management in farming have a negative effect on poultry health. Despite numerous proposed strategies and innovative approaches, each faces its own set of strengths and limitations. In this review, we aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of the poultry industry over the past decade, by examining its achievements, challenges, and strategies, to guide its future direction.

Abstract:Oxidative stress and in-feed antibiotics restrictions have accelerated the development of natural, green, safe feed additives for swine and poultry diets. Lycopene has the greatest antioxidant potential among the carotenoids, due to its specific chemical structure. In the past decade, increasing attention has been paid to lycopene as a functional additive for swine and poultry feed. In this review, we systematically summarized the latest research progress on lycopene in swine and poultry nutrition during the past ten years (2013–2022). We primarily focused on the effects of lycopene on productivity, meat and egg quality, antioxidant function, immune function, lipid metabolism, and intestinal physiological functions. The output of this review highlights the crucial foundation of lycopene as a functional feed supplement for animal nutrition.

Abstract:SUMMARY Botanical medicine is an ancient medicine used by human beings for thousands of years. Recently, phytobiotics, which are phytochemical compounds derived from plants, are investigated and used widely in the veterinary field as an alternative feed additive to antibiotic growth promoters. Phytobiotic feed additives can be defined as plants-/herbs-derived products added to the feed in order to improve performance of animals. Phytobiotics include herbs (non-woody and non-persistent plants), spices (with a powerful scent or flavour) and essential oils. These phytobiotics conatin subsequent tens of active principles that are classified into six major bioactive chemicals: phenolic, organosulfur, nitrogen-containing compounds, phytosterols, alkaloids, and carotenoids. Each chemical class of phytobiotics has a mode of action; e.g. phenolic compounds or flavonoids as major active ingredients are identified as potential antimicrobial and antioxidant agents. Therefore, the growth promotion outcome induced by phytobiotic feed additives varies depending on the phytochemical mixture used and their active chemicals as well as their concentrations. This review highlights the mode of actions of various phytobiotics, and their beneficial effects on feed intake, gut health, immune system, blood picture and biochemical indices as well as visceral organs, and subsequently their final outcome as growth promoters in poultry nutrition.

Abstract:This paper summarizes the current knowledge regarding the possible modes of action and nutritional factors involved in the use of essential oils (EOs) for swine and poultry. EOs have recently attracted increased interest as feed additives to be fed to swine and poultry, possibly replacing the use of antibiotic growth promoters which have been prohibited in the European Union since 2006. In general, EOs enhance the production of digestive secretions and nutrient absorption, reduce pathogenic stress in the gut, exert antioxidant properties and reinforce the animal’s immune status, which help to explain the enhanced performance observed in swine and poultry. However, the mechanisms involved in causing this growth promotion are far from being elucidated, since data on the complex gut ecosystem, gut function, in vivo oxidative status and immune system are still lacking. In addition, limited information is available regarding the interaction between EOs and feed ingredients or other feed additives (especially pro- or prebiotics and organic acids). This knowledge may help feed formulators to better utilize EOs when they formulate diets for poultry and swine.

Abstract:To develop effective antibiotics alternatives is getting more and more important to poultry healthy production. The study investigated the effects of a microencapsulated essential oils and organic acids preparation (EOA) on growth performance, slaughter performance, nutrient digestibility and intestinal microenvironment of broilers. A total of 624 1-day-old male Arbor Acres broilers were randomly divided into 6 groups including the control group (T1) fed with basal diet, the antibiotic group (T2) supplemented with basal diet with 45 mg/kg bacitracin methylene disalicylate (BMD), and 4 inclusion levels of EOA-treated groups (T3, T4, T5, T6 groups) chickens given basal diet with 200, 400, 600, and 800 mg EOA/kg of diet, respectively. Results showed that compared with the control, the 200 mg/kg EOA group increased average daily gain (ADG) and average body weight (ABW) during the early stage (P < 0.05). EOA addition decreased crypt depth of the ileum (P < 0.05), but villus height to crypt depth ratio was increased by EOA addition at 200 and 400 mg/kg at d 21 (P < 0.05). Compared with the control, dietary addition EOA at 200, 400 and 600 mg/kg increased the lipase activity in the duodenum at d 21 (P < 0.05). Increased lactic acid bacteria population was found in cecal digesta of the 400 mg/kg EOA group at d 21 (P < 0.05), and higher concentration of butyric acid level was observed in cecal digesta at d 21 and d 42 in the 200 mg/kg EOA group compared with the control (P < 0.05). RT-PCR analysis found that dietary EOA addition decreased the gene expression of IL-1β, COX-2 and TGF-β4 in the ileum at d 21 (P < 0.05), while only the 200 mg/kg EOA increased the gene expression of IL-10, TGF-β4, Claudin-1, ZO-1, CATH-1, CATH-3, AvBD-1, AvBD-9 and AvBD-12 in the ileum at d 42 (P < 0.05) compared with the control. In summary, adding 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg of the EOA to the diet could improve the growth performance and intestinal microenvironment through improving intestinal morphology, increasing digestive enzymes activity and cecal lactic acid bacteria abundance and butyric acid content, improving intestinal barrier function as well as maintaining intestinal immune homeostasis. The improving effect induced by EOA addition in the early growth stage was better than that in the later growth stage. Overall, the EOA product might be an effective antibiotic alternative for broiler industry.

Abstract:The overuse of antibiotics in poultry farming causes the accumulation of drug residue in animals' bodies and the occurrence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which not only compromise animals' health but ultimately endanger human health. Thus, there is an urgent need for a novel poultry feed additive to substitute for excessive antibiotics. Glycyrrhiza polysaccharides (GPS) derived from Chinese licorice have shown promising immunomodulatory effects in previous studies. The present study investigated the pharmacological effects of GPS on poultry intestines to assess whether it can be used as a feed additive. The results show that GPS can increase production of sIgA, promote the secretion activity of goblet cells, alter the gut microbial composition and lead to changes in short-chain fatty acids. GPS also elevated both Th1 and Th2 immune responses by facilitating the expression of IL-2, IL-4, IL-1β, and IFN-γ while increasing the proportion of both CD4+ and CD8+ cells in the intestine. Moreover, the results of 16S rRNA gene sequencing showed that GPS could significantly change intestinal microbiota composition in the intestine, evidenced by the increased proportion of Bacteroides, Butyricicoccus and Eisenbergiella, as well as a decreased portion of Erysipelatoclostridium, leading to a healthier intestinal microbiota composition for the host. Taken together, it can be concluded that GPS is safe to use as a novel feed additive that can be used as an alternative to prophylactic antibiotics in poultry feeding.
