Survey of Malmquist Index for the Innovation Efficiency of Cities in China and Difference Analysis

Abstract:This paper assesses the innovation efficiency of Chinese cities by the method of Malmquist.The research indicates that the total factor productivity has increased by 9.7% during the years from 2003 to 2006.From the perspective path of total factor productivity increase,it can be found that improvement of technological innovation accounts for the major percentage,and a big variation can be found between different cities.Further analysis also suggests that no significant difference was found in the increase of total factor productivity between eastern and western cities,both of which are in a generally increasing trend.However,as for the innovative efficiency,significant difference lies in comparing that of the east than that of the middle and the west.
