Abstract:In interference-limited wireless cellular systems, interference avoidance and interference averaging are widely adopted to combat co-channel interference. In different types of wireless networks, these two basic frequency planning methods are implemented under variable system deployment strategies. With respect to the IEEE 802.16 OFDMA network, interference avoidance is usually carried out by carefully designing the frequency reuse patterns, while interference averaging is implemented by distributed subcarrier permutation, which can be further divided into multiple operation modes. In this paper, based on the system level simulation of the average signal to interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) in the 802.16 system, the performance metrics of system throughput and outage probability are estimated. According to the predetermined evaluation criterions, the system performances under variable combination patterns of frequency reuse and subcarrier permutation are evaluated. Finally, the optimal frequency planning strategies, in terms of the frequency reuse pattern and the subcarrier permutation mode, is obtained, which can serve as a reference in practical network deployments.

Abstract:Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a promising technology for the next generation high-speed wireless communication. However, carrier frequency offset (CFO) induced by Doppler frequency drift and mismatch of the transceivers oscillators influences the time synchronization for OFDM systems. In this paper a robust time synchronization scheme compatible to IEEE 802.16a specification is proposed. It uses the symmetrical cross-correlation structure to eliminate the impact of frequency offset totally and to capture the accurate starting position of the FFT windows rapidly. Computer simulations demonstrate that the synchronization scheme is very efficient in combating large CFO.

A Study on Cell Search Algorithms for IEEE 802.16e OFDMA Systems.

Abstract:In this paper, the problem of cell search for IEEE 802.16e OFDMA systems is addressed, which includes two steps: frame detection and cell ID identification. We propose two novel frame detection algorithms: one is based on the pseudo-periodicity property of the preamble signal in time-domain (TD algorithm), and the other one is based on the Euclidean distance in frequency-domain (FD algorithm). In comparison with the FD algorithm, the TD algorithm is more robust to fading and interference, at the cost of a higher implementation complexity. Therefore, we should choose the suitable one based on different system reliability and complexity requirements. As for the cell ID identification procedure, an adaptive correlation length algorithm (ACL algorithm) is proposed, in which the necessary correlation length can be chosen without prior channel knowledge, and thereby greatly reduces the cell search time. The system simulation results show that the proposed frame detection and cell ID identification algorithms are robust and efficient for OFDMA cellular systems, especially for IEEE 802.16e OFDMA systems.

Abstract:OFDM modulation and multihop transmission are two important techniques for future wireless networks. This paper discusses the adaptive subcarrier and power allocation in OFDM based multihop networks. Both OFDM-TDMA and OFDM-FDMA access methods are considered. For OFDM-TDMA based multihop networks, a power allocation algorithm is proposed to maximize the end-to-end capacity for the constraint of the overall transmit power of all hops. For OFDM-FDMA based multihop networks, a joint subcarrier and power allocation algorithm is proposed. The performances of the proposed algorithms are evaluated, in both symmetric case (each hop has same average channel gain) and asymmetric case (the hops have different average channel gain). The results show that the OFDM-FDMA access method achieves a higher end-to-end capacity than the OFDM-TDMA access method, and the proposed adaptive resource allocation algorithms perform better than the fixed resource allocation strategy, in both cases

Abstract:A novel structure of single frequency cellular network (SFCN) was proposed to improve the performance of traditional GSM (global system for mobile communication) by applying the technique of OFDM-based single frequency network to GSM. In the downlink, adjacent three base stations worked as a macro-diversity to form a single frequency cell and broadcast downlink data to mobile stations. In the uplink, selective diversity was used to select the base station in the best receiving condition to receive uplink data. Simulation results showed that in the proposed system, handoff requests in the process of mobility were decreased, that both call blocking probability and call dropping probability were reduced, while system capacity was increased.

Abstract:The IEEE 802.16 standard meets the worldwide demand for a broadband wireless access system to enjoy high-speed and easy link to the Internet. Except for those fundamental functions and mechanisms described in the standard, there leave a lot of things for developers to design for high efficiencies, especially providing QoS (Quality of Service) in this BWA system. In this paper, we first introduce the general structure of the MAC layer in IEEE 802.16 standard. Then we propose a design of a software platform for the MAC layer and apply some simple optional mechanisms in this simulation platform. Moreover, we explore the possibility of testing more complex algorithms based on this platform to better serve the QoS of IEEE 802.16 system.

Abstract:System synchronization and channel estimation are two key problems of IEEE 802.16e Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex Access (OFDMA) downlink system. According to the standard, system synchronization is completed through the cell search procedure, which includes two steps: frame detection and cell-ID identification. First, based on the special time-domain (TD) and frequency-domain (FD) structures of the preamble, we propose two novel frame detection ms: the TD algorithm and the FD algorithm. Their robustness performance is nearly the same, and the complexity of the FD algorithm is only ${{1} \over{31}}$ of that of the TD algorithm. Then, an efficient cell-ID identification algorithm is proposed, in which the necessary correlation length can be dramatically shortened even without any a priori channel knowledge. Thereby, it greatly reduces the cell search time. As for the problem of channel estimation, a cluster-based channel estimation method is proposed. It is based on the special pilot distribution of IEEE 802.16e and utilizes the continuity of channel variations to mitigate the impact of time-variant channel. System simulation results show that the proposed algorithms are both robust and efficient. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Abstract:A novel cross-layer wireless resource allocation scheme is proposed for Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex Access (OFDMA) system based on IEEE 802.16e Wireless MAN. With the assumption of a finite queue model, a distinct scheduling priority is defined for each user integrates MAC QoS requirements, queue status and PHY Channel State Information (CSI). Using these scheduling priorities, a scheduling rule for mixed traffics is proposed. Simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm is efficient in terms of average system throughput, packet losing probability, and system fairness, while improving each user's QoS performance.

Abstract:OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) has been widely used in wire and wireless communications, because of its efficient use of the frequency spectrum and good multi-path tolerance. However, the OFDM system is very sensitive to frequency offset and phase noise. In order to overcome this disadvantage, asymmetric hexagonal QAM is presented in this paper as a new modulation method to solve this problem. Without weakening the resistance to noise, an asymmetric hexagonal QAM based OFDM system is easy to get the sub-carrier frequency and it is more convenient for its synchronization. In this paper, the asymmetric hexagonal QAM based OFDM system is designed and simulated by SystemView. Then the simulation results are presented and analyzed; the properties of asymmetric hexagonal QAM and rectangular QAM are compared.

Abstract:Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a multi-carrier modulation technique which is very much popular in new wireless networks of IEEE standard, digital television, audio broadcasting and 4G mobile communications. The main benefit of OFDM over single-carrier schemes is its ability to cope with severe channel conditions without complex equalization filters. It has improved the quality of long-distance communication by eliminating InterSymbol Interference (ISI) and improving Signal-to-Noise ratio (SNR). The main drawbacks of OFDM are its high peak to average power ratio and its sensitivity to phase noise and frequency offset. This paper gives an overview of OFDM, its applications in various systems such as IEEE 802.11a, Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) and Digital Broadcast Services to Handheld Devices (DVB-H) along with its advantages and disadvantages.

Abstract:Ever increasing demands for communication on airport surface areas have led to studies of new systems feasible for use in these environments. The IEEE 802.16e standard systems can be considered potential candidates for these areas because of their many attractive features, which include high data rate, mobility support, etc. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of an 802.16e system with the OFDMA air interface over non-stationary channel models developed for different airports. We first provide a brief introduction to the various non-stationary channel models. Next we provide a short overview of 802.16e and describe three potential channel estimation schemes. We then evaluate the performance of the 802.16e system over the proposed non-stationary channel models. We show that the proposed channel estimation methods allow good tradeoffs between channel estimation accuracy and computational complexity. Finally, we introduce a subcarrier based subcarrier based scheduling algorithm aimed to maximize the system throughput under proportional fairness, and evaluate its performance over the proposed non-stationary channel models.

Abstract:Abstract Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a special multi-carrier transmission technology. It utilizes digital signal processing (DSP) to perform inverse Fast Fourier transform (IFFT) and generates a set of orthogonal subcarriers for parallel transmission of low-rate digital signals, achieving the transmission of high-speed digital signals. It has the advantages of high spectral efficiency and anti-dispersion, and has broad applications in large-capacity and long-distance optical fiber communication systems and optical access networks. In this paper, the working principle, structure and application of OFDM in optical fiber communication systems are investigated. Then the problems which should be solved in the application of OFDM in optical communication systems are discussed. Finally, the development of OFDM system is prospected.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) is one of the key technologies for next-generation mobile communications.The influence on the performance of the base-band communication system based on OFDM technology in multipath Rayleigh fading channels is emphatically investigated.According to the basic theory of the OFDM technology,the paper creates an OFDM base-band simulation model of the wireless communication system,with bandwidth of 15MHz,modulation mode of 16-QAM,convolution code rate of 1/2,subcarrier number of 60,and cyclic prefix is inserted.The performance of the anti-multipath-interference of the OFDM system is analyzed,BERs of the system between different channels,and BERs between different Guard Intervals are compared.The result of the simulation shows that OFDM technology has superior performance of anti-multipath-interference.

Abstract:Multi-band Ultra-Wideband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (UWB-OFDM) system is an ideal access solution for high data rate, short range WPANs physical layer and it has broad application prospect. The bit error rate (BER) performance between two different modulation techniques was studied in AWGN and IEEE 802.15.3a UWB multi-path channel model, and the effect on multi-band UWB-OFDM system performance was analyzed by adding the guard interval. Simulation results show that QPSK modulation performs much better than 16QAM modulation.

Abstract:The Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing Passive Optical Network(OFDM-PON) technology is one of the current research focuses in optical access networks.This paper first briefly describes its study background,explains its principle,network architecture and key technologies.Then it studies and analyzes OFDM-PON-based services and bandwidth scheduling and predicts the prospects of its applications.Study results show that compared with the conventional PON systems,OFDM-PON system has its transmission bandwidth dramatically increased and realizes subcarrier-,modulation format-,and time slot-based services and bandwidth scheduling.

Abstract:The combination of MIMO and OFDM is the core technique of B3G and 4G wideband wireless communication,which can effectively increase spectral utilization.Traditionally,design of communication system is simulated with Matlab.This paper realizes the simulation of 4*4 MIMO OFDM wireless communication system using SystemC.Research result demonstrates that MIMO OFDM system provides higher data rate and better performance,and SystemC is a fast operated and easy realized development platform which can save more PC resources.
