Abstract:The precise and convenient control of quantum states is a major goal in atom and optics, and is expected to lead to new physics and new applications. Several recent methods to manipulate a Bose Einstein condensate (BEC) are given in this chapter. First, Majorana transition is used to generate a spinor condensate and a multicomponent spinor atom laser. Secondly, a cooperative scattering process as Superradiant Rayleigh scattering, is demonstrated to manipulate the different momentum state of condensate with some new parameters, such as the variable incident angle, the different frequency components and their initial relative phase, the effective linewidth of laser beams. Thirdly, based on a sequence of standing wave pulses, an efficient coherent control for the specific momentum states and nonadiabatically loading a condensate into the ground state of a one-dimensional optical lattice are demonstrated. Finally, the first-order spatial correlations of a Bose gas released from an optical lattice, and multi-band energy structures of single-particle excitations with zero pseudo-momentum transfer for a wide range of lattice depths are measured.

Abstract:Manipulation of the quantum state by the Majorana transition in spinor BECsystem has been realized by altering the rotation frequency of the magneticfield's direction. This kind of manipulation method has no limitation on thetransition speed in principle and the system is well closed, which provides anew and superior tool to manipulate quantum states. Using this methord onpulsed atom laser, multicomponent spinor atom laser is generated. Wedemonstrate that the experiment results are agreed with the theoreticalpredication.

Abstract:A new extended Dicke model, which includes atom-atom interactions and a driving classical laser field, is established for a Bose-Einstein condensate inside an ultrahigh-finesse optical cavity. A feasible experimental setup with a strong atom-field coupling is proposed, where most parameters are easily controllable and thus the predicted second-order superradiant-normal phase transition may be detected by measuring the ground-state atomic population. More intriguingly, a novel second-order phase transition from the superradiant phase to the \textquotedblleft Mott" phase is also revealed. In addition, a rich and exotic phase diagram is presented.

Abstract:A scheme is proposed to manipulate the quantum-statistical properties of a neutral atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in an ultracold alkali-atom-trap system with atoms in the ground hyperfine F = 1, M(F) = +/-1,0 states (labeled respectively as vertical-bar g+/-,0)). Initially, the atomic condensate is assumed to be prepared in a hyperfine sublevel vertical-bar g-). By effective two-photon excitations with two classical (sigma(-)) and quantum (sigma(+)) nonresonant copropagating traveling-wave light fields, we show that the atomic system can be settled into a coherent superposition of two atomic Bose-Einstein condensates corresponding to different ground hyperfine sublevels and different quantum statistics. Furthermore, with an appropriate choice of interaction time, atom-field coupling strengths, and quantum features of the quantized laser field, a nonclassical condensate can be prepared in the hyperfine sublevel vertical-bar g+).

Abstract:We report the experimental implementation of discrete-time topological quantum walks of a Bose-Einstein condensate in momentum space. Introducing stroboscopic driving sequences to the generation of a momentum lattice, we show that the dynamics of atoms along the lattice is effectively governed by a periodically driven Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, which is equivalent to a discrete-time topological quantum walk. We directly measure the underlying topological invariants through time-averaged mean chiral displacements, which are consistent with our experimental observation of topological phase transitions. We then observe interaction-induced localization in the quantum-walk dynamics, where atoms tend to populate a single momentum-lattice site under interactions that are nonlocal in momentum space. Our experiment opens up the avenue of investigating discrete-time topological quantum walks using cold atoms, where the many-body environment and tunable interactions offer exciting new possibilities.

Abstract:We analyze the effects of sequences of standing-wave pulses on a Bose-Einstein condensate. The experimental observations are in good agreement with a numerical simulation based on band structure theory in an optical lattice. We also demonstrate that a coherent control method based on such a sequence of pulses is very efficient for the experimental design of specific momentum states.

Abstract:We report the experimental observation of tunable, nonreciprocal quantum transport of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a momentum lattice. By implementing a dissipative Aharonov-Bohm (AB) ring in momentum space and sending atoms through it, we demonstrate a directional atom flow by measuring the momentum distribution of the condensate at different times. While the dissipative AB ring is characterized by the synthetic magnetic flux through the ring and the laser-induced loss on it, both the propagation direction and transport rate of the atom flow sensitively depend on these highly tunable parameters. We demonstrate that the nonreciprocity originates from the interplay of the synthetic magnetic flux and the laser-induced loss, which simultaneously breaks the inversion and the time-reversal symmetries. Our results open up the avenue for investigating nonreciprocal dynamics in cold atoms, and highlight the dissipative AB ring as a flexible building element for applications in quantum simulation and quantum information.
Manipulating Quantum States of Molecules Created via Photoassociation of Bose-Einstein Condensates

Abstract:We show the quantum state transfer technique in two-color photoassociation (PA) of a Bose-Einstein condensate, where a quantized field is used to couple the free-bound transition from atom state to excited molecular state. Under the weak excitation condition, we find that quantum states of the quantized field can be transferred to the created molecular condensate. The feasibility of this technique is confirmed by considering the atomic and molecular decays discovered in the current PA experiments. The present results allow us to manipulate quantum states of molecules in the photoassociation of a Bose-Einstein condensate.

Abstract:We discuss a proposal for the efficient generation of the maximally entangled atomic N-GHZ state in a spinor-1 condensate by driving internal state atomic Raman transitions using (classical) laser fields. We illustrate the dynamics in terms of a quantum Zeno subspace, and identify the resultant atomic elastic collision in facilitating the deterministic entanglement creation. Our proposal can be readily implemented in several laboratories where ferromagnetic spinor condensates (of ^87Rb atoms) are investigated.

Abstract:Entanglement-based technologies, such as quantum information processing, quantum simulations and quantum-enhanced metrology, have the potential to revolutionize our way of computing and measuring, and help clarify the puzzling concept of entanglement itself. Ultracold atoms on atom chips are attractive for their implementation, as they provide control over quantum systems in compact, robust and scalable set-ups. An important tool in this system is a potential depending on the internal atomic state. Coherent dynamics in such a potential combined with collisional interactions enables entanglement generation both for individual atoms and ensembles. Here, we demonstrate coherent manipulation of Bose-condensed atoms in a state-dependent potential, generated with microwave near-fields on an atom chip. We reversibly entangle atomic internal and motional states, realizing a trapped-atom interferometer with internal-state labelling. Our system provides control over collisions in mesoscopic condensates, paving the way to on-chip generation of many-particle entanglement and quantum-enhanced metrology with spin-squeezed states.

Abstract:We investigate the interaction between a single mode light field and an elongated cigar shaped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), subject to a temporal modulation of the trap frequency in the tight confinement direction. Under appropriate conditions, the longitudinal sound like waves (Faraday waves) in the direction of weak confinement acts as a dynamic diffraction grating for the incident light field analogous to the acousto-optic effect in classical optics. The change in the refractive index due to the periodic modulation of the BEC density is responsible for the acousto-optic effect. The dynamics is characterised by Bragg scattering of light fom the matter wave Faraday grating and simultaneous Bragg scattering of the condensate atoms from the optical grating formed due to the interference between the incident light and the diffracted light fields. Varying the intensity of the incident laser beam we observe the transition from the acousto-optic effect regime to the atomic Bragg scattering regime, where Rabi oscillations between two momentum levels of the atoms are observed. We show that the acousto-optic effect is reduced as the atomic interaction is increased.

Abstract:Optical control of atomic interactions in a quantum gas is a long-sought goal of cold atom research. Previous experiments have been hindered by short lifetimes and parasitic deformation of the trap potential. Here, we develop and implement a generic scheme for optical control of Feshbach resonance in quantum gases, which yields long condensate lifetimes sufficient to study equilibrium and non-equilibrium physics with negligible parasitic dipole force. We show that fast and local control of interactions leads to intriguing quantum dynamics in new regimes, highlighted by the formation of van der Waals molecules and partial collapse of a Bose condensate.

Abstract:We analyze the optomechanicslike properties of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped inside an optical resonator and driven by both a classical and a quantized light field. We find that this system exhibits the nature of role reversal between the matter-wave field and the quantized light field. As a result, the matter-wave field now plays the role of the quantized light field, and the quantized light field behaves like a movable mirror, in contrast to the familiar situation in BEC-based cavity optomechanics [Brennecke et al., Science 322, 235 (2008); Murch et al., Nature Phys. 4, 561 (2008)]. We demonstrate that this system can lead to the creation of a variety of nonclassical matter-wave fields, in particular, cat states, and discuss several possible protocols to measure their Wigner function.

Abstract:We propose a protocol to create maximally entangled pairs, triplets, quartiles, and other clusters of Bose-condensed atoms starting from a condensate in the Mott insulator state. The essential element is to drive single atom Raman transitions using laser pulses. Our scheme is simple, efficient, and can be readily applied to the recent experimental system as reported by M. Greiner 413, 44 (2002)].

Abstract:Protocols for quantum communication between massive particles, such as atoms, are usually based on making use of nonclassical light, and/or superhigh finesse optical cavities are normally needed to enhance interaction between atoms and photons. We demonstrate a remarkable result: by using only coherent light, entanglement can be generated between distant free space atomic ensembles, and an unknown quantum state can thus be teleported from one to another. Neither nonclassical light nor cavities are needed in the scheme, which greatly simplifies its experimental implementation.

Abstract:Atom optic techniques are proposed to control the excitation of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an atomic trap. We show that by employing the dipole potential induced by four highly detuned traveling-wave laser beams with appropriate phases and frequencies, one can coherently excite a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate composed of ultracold alkali-metal atoms into a state rotating around the trap center. Pure vortex states can be created with this scheme if the condensate is trapped in an anharmonic trap.

Abstract:It is proposed that quantum computation can be implemented on the basis of macroscopic quantum coherence of a many-particle system, especially the Bose-Einstein condensates, instead of a pure state. Moreover, since a macroscopic condensate “wavefunction” is described by a nonlinear Schrödinger equation, and the nonlinearity is tunable, one may be able to build a quantum computer composed of both linear and nonlinear gates in order to solve NP-complete and #P problems. Abstract:In experiments involving Bose condensed atoms trapped in magnetic bottles, plugging the hole in the bottle potential with a LASER beam produces a new potential with two minima, and thus a condensate order parameter (i.e. wave function) with two maxima. When the trapping potential is removed and the condensate explodes away from the trap, the two wave function maxima act as two coherent sources which exhibit amplitude interference. A simplified theoretical treatment of this experimental effect is provided by considering momentum distributions.
