Abstract:Particle formation by an adjustable irradiation source has been studied. Air that containssulphur dioxide and water vapour has been irradiatied in a flow reactor. In the aerosol measurements both CNC (TSI 3025) and EMS (DMA, VIE-08) have been used. Significant particle formation has been detected to occur already on doses in the order of 0.1 mGy. Particle number concentration is dependent on absorbed dose, also particle size is proportional to the dose. An attempt to interprete the results quantitatively has been carried out.

Abstract:Nineteen experiments with irradiated m-xylene/NO/air mixtures were conducted in the presence of highly concentrated Ca(NO3)2 and CaSO4 seed aerosols in a temperature-controlled smog chamber. The highly concentrated aqueous Ca(NO3)2 seed aerosol and dry CaSO4 seed aerosol have no significant effect on secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation in m-xylene photooxdation system. Both aqueous Ca(NO3)2 aerosol and dry Ca5O4 aerosol showed no significant effect on SOA formation in m-xylene photooxidation system, even at highly concentrated condition. The results were consistent with previous conclusions that dry inorganic seed aerosols simply provide an inert surface and aqueous inorganic seed aerosols do not significantly alter the gas-particle equilibrium established in aromatic photooxidation system.

Abstract:Atmospheric new particle formation is generally thought to occur due to homogeneous or ion-induced nucleation of sulphuric acid. We compare ambient nucleation rates with laboratory data from nucleation experiments involving either sulphuric acid or oxidized SO2. Atmospheric nucleation occurs at H2SO4 concentrations 2–4 orders of magnitude lower than binary or ternary nucleation rates of H2SO4 produced from a liquid reservoir, and atmospheric H2SO4 concentrations are very well replicated in the SO2 oxidation experiments. We hypothesize these features to be due to the formation of free HSO5 radicals in pace with H2SO4 during the SO2 oxidation. We suggest that at temperatures above ~250 K these radicals produce nuclei of new aerosols much more efficiently than H2SO4. These nuclei are activated to further growth by H2SO4 and possibly other trace species. However, at lower temperatures the atmospheric relative acidity is high enough for the H2SO4–H2O nucleation to dominate.
Molecular Composition and Volatility of Isoprene Photochemical Oxidation Secondary Organic Aerosol under Low- and High-Nox Conditions

Abstract:We present measurements of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation from isoprene photochemical oxidation in an environmental simulation chamber at a variety of oxidant conditions and using dry neutral seed particles to suppress acid-catalyzed multiphase chemistry. A high-resolution time-of-flight chemical ionization mass spectrometer (HR-ToF-CIMS) utilizing iodide-adduct ionization coupled to the Filter Inlet for Gases and Aerosols (FIGAERO) allowed for simultaneous online sampling of the gas and particle composition. Under high-HO2 and low-NO conditions, highly oxygenated (O : C ≥ 1) C5 compounds were major components (∼ 50 %) of SOA. The SOA composition and effective volatility evolved both as a function of time and as a function of input NO concentrations. Organic nitrates increased in both the gas and particle phases as input NO increased, but the dominant non-nitrate particle-phase components monotonically decreased. We use comparisons of measured and predicted gas-particle partitioning of individual components to assess the validity of literature-based group-contribution methods for estimating saturation vapor concentrations. While there is evidence for equilibrium partitioning being achieved on the chamber residence timescale (5.2 h) for some individual components, significant errors in group-contribution methods are revealed. In addition, > 30 % of the SOA mass, detected as low-molecular-weight semivolatile compounds, cannot be reconciled with equilibrium partitioning. These compounds desorb from the FIGAERO at unexpectedly high temperatures given their molecular composition, which is indicative of thermal decomposition of effectively lower-volatility components such as larger molecular weight oligomers.

Abstract:To investigate the sensitivity of secondary aerosol formation and oxidation capacity to NO x in homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions, a series of irradiated toluene/NO x /air and α-pinene/NO x /air experiments were conducted in smog chambers in the absence or presence of Al2O3 seed particles. Various concentrations of NO x and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were designed to simulate secondary aerosol formation under different scenarios for NO x . Under “VOC-limited” conditions, the increasing NO x concentration suppressed secondary aerosol formation, while the increasing toluene concentration not only contributed to the increase in secondary aerosol formation, but also led to the elevated oxidation degree for the organic aerosol. Sulfate formation was suppressed with the increasing NO x due to a decreased oxidation capacity of the photooxidation system. Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation also decreased with the presence of high concentration of NO x , because organoperoxy radicals (RO2) react with NO x instead of with peroxy radicals (RO2 or HO2), resulting in the formation of volatile organic products. The increasing concentration of NO x enhanced the formation of sulfate, nitrate and SOA under “NO x -limited” conditions, in which the heterogeneous reactions played an important role. In the presence of Al2O3 seed particles, a synergetic promoting effect of mineral dust and NO x on secondary aerosol formation in heterogeneous reactions was observed in the photooxidation. This synergetic effect strengthened the positive relationship between NO x and secondary aerosol formation under “NO x -limited” conditions but weakened or even overturned the negative relationship between NO x and secondary aerosol formation under “VOC-limited” conditions. Sensitivity of secondary aerosol formation to NO x seemed different in homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions, and should be both taken into account in the sensitivity study. The sensitivity of secondary aerosol formation to NO x was further investigated under “winter-like” and NH3-rich conditions. No obvious difference for the sensitivity of secondary aerosol formation except nitrate to NO x was observed.

Abstract:Atmospheric new-particle formation (NPF) affects climate by contributing to a large fraction of the cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). Highly oxygenated organic molecules (HOMs) drive the early particle growth and therefore substantially influence the survival of newly formed particles to CCN. Nitrogen oxide (NOx) is known to suppress the NPF driven by HOMs, but the underlying mechanism remains largely unclear. Here, we examine the response of particle growth to the changes of HOM formation caused by NOx. We show that NOx suppresses particle growth in general, but the suppression is rather nonuniform and size dependent, which can be quantitatively explained by the shifted HOM volatility after adding NOx. By illustrating how NOx affects the early growth of new particles, a critical step of CCN formation, our results help provide a refined assessment of the potential climatic effects caused by the diverse changes of NOx level in forest regions around the globe.

Abstract:Aerosol formation from biogenic and anthropogenic precursor trace gases in continental background areas affects climate via altering the amount of available cloud condensation nuclei. Significant uncertainty still exists regarding the agents controlling the formation of aerosol nanoparticles. We have performed experiments in the Jülich plant–atmosphere simulation chamber with instrumentation for the detection of sulfuric acid and nanoparticles, and present the first simultaneous chamber observations of nanoparticles, sulfuric acid, and realistic levels and mixtures of biogenic volatile compounds (BVOCs). We present direct laboratory observations of nanoparticle formation from sulfuric acid and realistic BVOC precursor vapour mixtures performed at atmospherically relevant concentration levels. We directly measured particle formation rates separately from particle growth rates. From this, we established that in our experiments, the formation rate was proportional to the product of sulfuric acid and biogenic VOC emission strength. The formation rates were consistent with a mechanism in which nucleating BVOC oxidation products are rapidly formed and activate with sulfuric acid. The growth rate of nanoparticles immediately after birth was best correlated with estimated products resulting from BVOC ozonolysis.

Abstract:Mechanistic investigations of atmospheric H2SO4 particle formation have been performed in a laboratory study taking either H2SO4 from a liquid reservoir or using the gas-phase reaction of OH radicals with SO2. Applying both approaches for H2SO4 generation simultaneously it was found that H2SO4 evaporated from the liquid reservoir acts considerably less effective for the process of particle formation and growth than the products originating from the reaction of OH radicals with SO2. Furthermore, for NOx concentrations >5×1011 molecule cm−3 the formation of new particles from the reaction of OH radicals with SO2 is inhibited. This suggests that substances other than H2SO4 (potentially products from sulphur-containing peroxy radicals) trigger lower tropospheric new particle formation and growth. The currently accepted mechanism for SO2 gas-phase oxidation does not consider the formation of such substances. The analysis of new particle formation for different reaction conditions in our experiment suggests that a contribution of impurities to the nucleation process is unlikely.

Abstract:Field observations were conducted in various environments, from polluted urban to clean marine atmospheres, to understand the organic aerosol formation under the influence of inorganic sulfate and NOx. Molecular compositions of organic aerosols were analyzed using an ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometer. The S-containing and N-containing organics are important fractions for SOA accumulation during pollution episodes or under high humidity conditions. To further investigate their formation pathways, organosulfates (OSs) and nitro-aromatics (NACs) were quantified using HPLC-MS. Particulate OSs were formed via acid-catalyzed aqueous-phase reactions in the presence of sulfate aerosols. When sulfate dominated the accumulation of secondary inorganic aerosols, OS formation would be obviously promoted as the increasing of acidic sulfate aerosols, aerosol liquid water and acidity. The formation of biogenic OSs and their notable roles in organic aerosols calls for elaboration in regions with substantial biogenic-anthropogenic interactions and over marine areas with high biological activity and high SST. Anthropogenic NOx influences the SOA formation via nighttime NO3-initiated oxidation of monoterpene, as well as involving in the oxidation of toluene and benzene. As the increasing of NOx concentration levels, the formation of nitrooxy-OSs or NACs shift from NOx-limited to NOx-excess regimes. Transported anthropogenic NOx from continental outflows would obviously enhance the nitrooxy-OSs formation in organic aerosols over marginal seas.

Abstract:High concentrations (>15μm3cm−3) of CaSO4, Ca(NO3)2 and (NH4)2SO4 were selected as surrogates of dry neutral, aqueous neutral and dry acidic inorganic seed aerosols, respectively, to study the effects of inorganic seeds on secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation in irradiated m-xylene/NOx photooxidation systems. The results indicate that neither ozone formation nor SOA formation is significantly affected by the presence of neutral aerosols (both dry CaSO4 and aqueous Ca(NO3)2), even at elevated concentrations. The presence of high concentrations of (NH4)2SO4 aerosols (dry acidic) has no obvious effect on ozone formation, but it does enhance SOA generation and increase SOA yields. In addition, the effect of dry (NH4)2SO4 on SOA yield is found to be positively correlated with the (NH4)2SO4 surface concentration, and the effect is pronounced only when the surface concentration reaches a threshold value. Further, it is proposed that the SOA generation enhancement is achieved by particle-phase heterogeneous reactions induced and catalyzed by the acidity of dry (NH4)2SO4 seed aerosols.

Abstract:Abstract. NH3 is the most important alkaline gas in the atmosphere and one of the key species affecting the behaviors of atmospheric aerosols. However, the impact of NH3 on secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation remains poorly understood, especially the dynamic evolution of chemical compositions in the SOA formation process. In this study, a series of chamber experiments were performed to probe the individual and common effects of NH3 and NOx on toluene SOA formation through OH photooxidation. The chemical compositions of toluene SOA were characterized using the Aerodyne high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS). The SOA yield increased from 28.1 % in the absence of NH3 to 34.7 % in the presence of NH3 but decreased to 19.5 % in the presence of NOx. However, the highest SOA yield of 42.7 % and the lowest carbon oxidation state (OSC) occurred in the presence of both NH3 and NOx, indicating that the higher-volatility products that formed in the presence of NOx could partition into the particle phase when NH3 was added. This resulted in a synergetic effect on SOA formation when NH3 and NOx co-existed. The heterogeneous reaction was the main pathway by which NH3 participated in SOA formation in the photooxidation process. The synergetic effect of NH3 and NOx was also observed in SOA optical absorption. A peak at 280 nm, which is characteristic of organonitrogen imidazole compounds, was observed in the presence of NH3, and its intensity increased when NOx was added into the chamber. This work improves our understanding of how the synergistic interactions between NH3 and NOx influence SOA formation and offers new insights into mitigating haze pollution.

Abstract:Measurements of particle formation following the gas phase oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seedlings are reported. Particle formation and condensational growth both from ozone (O3) and hydroxyl radical (OH) initiated oxidation of pine emissions (about 20-120 ppb) were investigated in a smog chamber. During experiments, tetramethylethylene (TME) and 2-butanol were added to control the concentrations of O3 and OH. Particle formation and condensational growth rates were interpreted with a chemical kinetic model. Scots pine emissions mainly included α-pinene, β-pinene, Δ3-carene, limonene, myrcene and β-phellandrene, composing more than 95% of total emissions. Modeled OH concentrations in the O3- and OH-induced experiments were on the order of ~106 molecules cm−3. Our results demonstrate that OH-initiated oxidation of VOCs plays an important role in the nucleation process during the initial new particle formation stage. The highest average particle formation rate of 360 cm−3 s−1 was observed for the OH-dominated nucleation events and the lowest formation rate of less than 0.5 cm−3 s−1 was observed for the case with only O3 present as an oxidant. In contrast to the particle formation process, ozonolysis of monoterpenes appears to be much more efficient to the aerosol growth process following nucleation. Higher contributions of more oxygenated products to the SOA mass loadings from OH-dominated oxidation systems were found as compared to the ozonolysis systems. Comparison of mass and volume distributions from the aerosol mass spectrometer and differential mobility analyzer yields estimated SOA effective densities of 1.34±0.06 g cm−3 for the OH+O3 oxidation systems and 1.38±0.03 g cm−3 for the O3 dominated chemistry.

We mimicked atmospheric conditions in a well-controlled laboratory setup and found that these oxidized organics form initial clusters directly with single sulfuric acid molecules. The clusters then grow by the further addition of both sulfuric acid and organic molecules. Some of the organics are remarkably highly oxidized, a critical feature that enables them to participate in forming initial stable molecular clusters and to facilitate the first steps of atmospheric nanoparticle formation.

Abstract:ABSTRACTToluene is one of the most important precursor contributors to ozone and secondary organic aerosol (SOA), both of which greatly affect the air quality and human health. In this study, the effects of toluene on ozone and SOA formation were investigated in the presence of NOx in the CAPS-ZJU (Complex Air Pollution Study-Zhejiang University) smog chamber. Three comparison groups of experiments were conducted under the gas-phase environments of toluene/NOx, toluene/isoprene/NOx, and toluene/ethylene/NOx. The ozone concentration and physical properties of SOA such as mass concentration, aerosol yield, effective density, extinction and scattering were measured simultaneously. A toluene-dependent mechanism of ozone formation was found at ratios of toluene and NOx between 3.1 and 11.3 with the initial NOx concentration about 30 ppb. With further increase of the toluene concentration, the maximum value of ozone concentration remained almost stabilized. The maximum SOA yields decreased with increase of toluene, while the SOA effective density was concentrated at 1.3–1.4 g cm–3. The presence of isoprene or ethylene can promote the formation of ozone and SOA. The SOA nucleation was delayed under different initial toluene concentrations and the yield was reduced at the same mass concentration. A linear increase of extinction and scattering was observed with the increase of SOA mass concentration in both the toluene/isoprene/NOx and toluene/ethylene/NOx systems. A rapid increase of single scattering albedo reflects the process of SOA nucleation and growth. In addition, organic aerosol oxidation products tend to carboxylic acids in toluene/isoprene/NOx system according to Van Krevelen.

Abstract:Heterogeneous reactions between organic and inorganic gases with aerosols are important for the study of smog occurrence and development. In this study, heterogeneous reactions between toluene and NO2 with three atmospheric mineral particles in the presence or absence of UV light were investigated. The three mineral particles were SiO2, alpha-Fe2O3, and BS (butlerite and szmolnokite). In a dark environment, benzaldehyde was produced on alpha-Fe2O3. For BS, nitrotoluene and benzaldehyde were obtained. No aromatic products were produced in the absence of NO2 in the system. In the presence of UV irradiation, benzaldehyde was detected on the SiO2 surface. Identical products were produced in the presence and absence of UV light over alpha-Fe2O3 and BS. UV light promoted nitrite to nitrate on mineral particles surface. On the basisi of the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results, a portion of BS was reduced from Fe-3 to Fe-2 with the adsorption of toluene or the reaction with toluene and NO2. Sulfate may play a key role in the generation of nitrotoluene on BS particles. From this research, the heterogeneous reactions between organic and inorganic gases with aerosols that occur during smog events will be better understood.

Abstract:Lack of knowledge about the mechanisms underlying new particle formation and their subsequent growth is one of the main causes for the large uncertainty in estimating the radiative forcing of atmospheric aerosols in global models. We performed chamber experiments designed to study the contributions of sulfuric acid and organic vapors to the formation and early growth of nucleated particles. Distinct experiments in the presence of two different organic precursors (1,3,5-trimethylbenzene and α-pinene) showed the ability of these compounds to reproduce the formation rates observed in the low troposphere. These results were obtained measuring the sulfuric acid concentrations with two chemical ionization mass spectrometers confirming the results of a previous study which modeled the sulfuric acid concentrations in presence of 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene.New analysis methods were applied to the data collected with a condensation particle counter battery and a scanning mobility particle sizer, allowing the assessment of the size resolved growth rates of freshly nucleated particles. The effect of organic vapors on particle growth was investigated by means of the growth rate enhancement factor (Γ), defined as the ratio between the measured growth rate in the presence of α-pinene and the kinetically limited growth rate of the sulfuric acid and water system. The observed Γ values indicate that the growth is already dominated by organic compounds at particle diameters of 2 nm. Both the absolute growth rates and Γ showed a strong dependence on particle size, supporting the nano-Köhler theory. Moreover, the separation of the contributions from sulfuric acid and organic compounds to particle growth reveals that the organic contribution seems to be enhanced by the sulfuric acid concentration. Finally, the size resolved growth analysis indicates that both condensation of oxidized organic compounds and reactive uptake contribute to particle growth.
