Abstract: Shape memory alloys (SMAs) have found increasing applications as candidate smart materials and components of adaptive structures [1]. One potential application of shape memory alloys is their use as fibrous sensors or actuators within a composite material system. Schetky and Wu[2], Schetky[3], and White et al[4] had discussed some technical details of such applications. The use of shape memory alloys as sensors may be related to the dependence of their properties on the martensite fraction. Conversely, the use of SMA fibers as distributed micro-actuators is also very attractive because of the relatively high strains that can be generated.
