Abstract:Blue phases (BPs) are mesophases usually exhibited by highly chiral materials and commonly occur in a narrow temperature range below the isotropic phase. They are optically active and non-birefringent, while exhibit Bragg diffraction of light in the visible wavelength. Recently, BPs have attracted growing attention in the field of optoelectronics and photonics. This paper reviews the recent research advances in BPs liquid crystals, also with a brief introduction of the history of the blue phase studies, and some special properties, especially the frustration in the double twist molecular alignment. Finally, the current challenges for applications of BPs materials are highlighted, and the focus of future research and development are proposed.
