Abstract:The present research examined the relationships between two social axiom dimensions, reward for application and fate control, with various achievement-related indexes across a wide range of cultures. Results showed that there was no relationship between reward for application and academic achievement or economic competitiveness, but reward for application was positively related to effort exertion and favorable attitudinal reactions to striving. In contrast, fate control was positively related to academic achievement and economic competitiveness, but not to effort exertion and attitudes toward striving. A number of speculations are provided to account for these intriguing findings.

Abstract:Taking "The Wealth of Nations" as the example, this paper discussed the interaction between the classics of social sciences and times. It introduced the changes of the evaluations and interpretations in different times after the publication of "The Wealth of Nations". It shows that the fate of classics always relates with the trend, combined with the historical context, and generated new meanings continuously by the mechanism of interactive evolution. In the era of discipline differentiation, the essence of the basic dilemma of reading and understanding the classics was similar with the basic dilemma of understanding times. In the era of discipline developed, people may be in a state of "knowledgeable ignorance", in order to be freed from the state, except for cultivating the common sense of the intellectual, another important method is reading classics.

Abstract:In recent years,a series of adaptation,remaking phenomena are becoming popular.Some old TV series,old songs and earlier literary masterpieces are adapted to cater to the aesthetic requirement of the young generation with the ultimate goal of maximizing market share.The adaptation seems to have renovated those classic works of art to a new life.However,most of the adaptation fails to inherit the spirit of the original and to reflect a truly modern spirit.The priority of adaptation is given to the reorientation of the classic works of art to the mentality of current audience while the inheritance and improvement of classic works of art take a back seat.Such interaction between adapters and audience only leads to declination of classic works of art.

Abstract:Wang Ning holds that as a product of postmodern consumer society, consumer culture distinguishes itself apparently with the elitist modern culture. While some of its elegant products may well become elite cultural products, more will be out of fashion along with the elapse of time. Wang Yichuan insists that consumer culture in contemporary China does not simply follow what Featherstone called the thoroughfare of "commodity world and its structuralization," instead, due to the intricate functioning of its multiple elements, it represents a displaced and time twisted dilemma: a consumer spoiled hot body and a critically reflective mind. To Bao Yarning, however, the logic of consumerism not only becomes the logic of our social space operation, but also the cultural logic dominating the daily life. Finally, Lu Yang tries to illustrate that while the cultural Americanization grows to be the core issue each nation faces, it will be a too naive resolution to dismiss it as a damned consumerism purely stimulated by multiple images, or sound and furry exactly.

Abstract:Individuals can negotiate with fate for control through exercising personal agency within the limits that fate has determined, a belief that is referred to as negotiable fate. The current study examined: (a) the social ecological factors that contribute to the prevalence of this belief in negotiable fate and; (b) the psychological functions it serves. The results from a cross-cultural study suggested that negotiable fate is more prevalent in contexts where individuals face many constraints in the pursuit of their goals (i.e., in Mainland China versus the United States), and it promotes active coping and positive self-views in those contexts. The importance of understanding how fate beliefs are linked to sociocultural contexts was discussed in reference to the psychological control literature and cultural psychology.

Abstract:According to Max Weber's generalization of characteristics of modern spirit,modernity refers to the disenchantment by reason.Disenchantment has been interpreted as a stance against the intervention of religions in public life over a long period of time.As a matter of fact,the biased understanding of modernity ignores the meaning of belief to human life,failing to fully grasp the interaction between modern public world and private world.Since the 1950s,the revival of religion has urged people to perceive another life pattern symbolized by reenchantment beyond disenchantment.Accordingly,people can recognize the high relevance both of religion to conscience order and of reason to social order,and thus,the value of religion receives recognition again.

Abstract:Literature classics have been treated coldly or even deserted in the era of popular culture.There are four reasons for this.First,the diverse values of contemporary people are proliferated and liter-ature classics are ruthlessly deconstructed.Second,"the feeler of market-oriented economy" reaches in-to the field of literature and "fast-food works" in the consumer era are a shock to literature classics.Third,literature carrier is being networked and literature classics are being visualized.Fourth,people are losing interest in Marxist outlook on literature.However,we still need literature classics in the era of consumption,because promoting literary classics is conducive to the healthy development of all literary activities,conducive to the promotion of individual and social progress,and conducive to the transmission and healthy development of the excellent Chinese culture.

Abstract:As for the research on the acceptor's activity in the hegemony structure of popular culture, Fiske is the most influential academician. According to Fiske, the circulation of popular culture in the financial system is manipulative and restraining and in the system of cultural economy is rebellious and resisting. As a kind of producer-style text, the popular culture is not only legible but also opening. The concept of “producer-style text” overthrows thoroughly the ideas on ideological control of Frankfort school. The Fiske's study also draws furious animadversion. Fiske overestimates the mass' activity in the process of creating the value of popular culture text.

Abstract:Over the past decade, urban residents have experienced a consumer revolution at multiple levels. In terms of material standard of living, sustained economic growth has dramatically increased spending on discretionary consumer purchases and urbanites have enthusiastically consumed globally branded foodstuffs, pop-music videos and fashion. At the same time, however, income distribution has become increasingly unequal. Some scholars therefore emphasize the negative exclusionary and exploitative parameters of the new consumer culture seeing nothing more than a ruse of capitalism or marker of all that is negative about post-socialist city life. Building on nearly a decade of fieldwork in Shanghai, this article disputes such a linear interpretation of subordination and exclusion in favour of a more polyvalent and stratified reading that emphasizes individual narratives unfolding against memories of an impoverished personal past, and a consumer culture that simultaneously incorporates contradictory experiences of emancipation and disempowerment.

Abstract:Today Geistesleben(spiritual life)has abandoned its transcendency and willingly attached itself to and become assimilated with a pale and vulgar form of reification,resulting in the reification of Geistesleben itself.Geistesleben has gained sensual diversity and,led by commodity fetishism and its cultural industry and popular culture,has fallen into the pitfall of irrational sensual pleasure and hedonism.Pathological conditions have appeared in people's Geistesleben.The globalization of capitalism has made the situation worse.The essential nature of reification remains alienation.It reflects the fact that the present age is a transitional and immature period in the development of world history,as seen in the failure of the individualization and socialization of the present time to create a pattern of Geistesleben that is consistent with modern civilization.Reification reveals in a profound manner the nihilism of our time.Nihilism is evident not only in the current crisis of Geistesleben in the West,but also in its spread as a universal cancer in this era of global capitalism.Cultural construction in contemporary China must address this problem of nihilism.

Abstract:As a category of culture,contemporary mass media is deeply influencing our daily life.It plays an important role in forming ideology,social mobility,promoting consummation and constructing identity.Three sub-fields,i.e.,mainline culture,mass culture and elite culture,in the field of media culture,have been formed to set a contemporary structure of China's media culture.The public sphere of media as a field of public discourse also penetrates into the private field,and brings about a series of complicated issues of media ethics,and the de-political trend of pleasure has further expressed the feature of consumer culture,from which comes out the political indifference of the media audiences.When people rely more and more on media to realize self-identity and ethnic identity,the contradiction between multiplicity and identity has been more prominent.

Abstract:Negotiable fate refers to the idea that one can negotiate with fate for control, and that people can exercise personal agency within the limits that fate has determined. Research on negotiable fate has found greater prevalence of related beliefs in Southeast Asia, East Asia, and Eastern Europe than in Western Europe and English-speaking countries. The present research extends previous findings by exploring the cognitive consequences of the belief in negotiable fate. It was hypothesized that this belief enables individuals to maintain faith in the potency of their personal actions and to remain optimistic in their goal pursuits despite the immutable constraints. The belief in negotiable fate was predicted to (a) facilitate sense-making of surprising outcomes; (b) increase persistence in goal pursuits despite early unfavorable outcomes; and (c) increase risky choices when individuals have confidence in their luck. Using multiple methods (e.g., crosscultural comparisons, culture priming, experimental induction of fate beliefs), we found supporting evidence for our hypotheses in three studies. Furthermore, as expected, the cognitive effects of negotiable fate are observed only in cultural contexts where the fate belief is relatively prevalent. Implications of these findings are discussed in relation to the intersubjective approach to understanding the influence of culture on cognitive processes (e.g., Chiu, Gelfand, Yamagishi, Shteynberg, & Wan, 2010), the sociocultural foundations that foster the development of a belief in negotiable fate, and an alternative perspective for understanding the nature of agency in contexts where constraints are severe. Future research avenues are also discussed.

Abstract:In view of Maxi’s morphological concept of time in sociology and the concept of time in the three major theories of social forms,we find the contemporary Chinese society simultanenous with its European counterparts in the Enlightment era in cultural mentality.It is well known that the Enlightenment happened in Europe of the 18 century,so the spirit of enlightenment is also the subject of the contemporary Chinese culture However,the spirit of enlightenment has kept on in the state of edge and even lack since the modern China.the Great Cultural Revolution is,in fact,a result of the lack of enlightenment. Therefore,the reconstruction of the spirit of enlightenment in the development of the contemporary Chinese culture does not mean to go along European old way again,we are going to seek such a spirit of enlightenment which has been reflected and revised.
