Abstract:We demonstrate here that single-crystal beta-Ni(OH)(2) nanosheets can be selectively synthesized in large quantities through a facile hydrothermal synthetic method using aqueous nickel nitrate as the nickel source and sodium hydroxide as alkaline reagent. This attempt is based on the treatment of aqueous nickel nitrate with high concentrations of sodium hydroxide solution under hydrothermal condition. Single-crystal NiO nanorolls can be obtained via a thermal decomposition method using single-crystal beta-Ni(OH)(2) nanosheets as the precursor. The influences of alkaline concentration and reaction temperature are carefully investigated in this paper. The morphologies and phase structures of the as-prepared products are investigated in detail by x-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and selected area electron diffraction (SAED). The probable formation mechanism of the NiO nanorolls is proposed on the basis of the experimental results.

Abstract:Large-scale gamma-MnOOH and beta-MnO2, nanorods have been synthesized via the hydrothermal process assisted with CTAB at 200 degrees C for 20 h using MnSO4 and NaOH as source and subsequent calcination of gamma-MnOOH nanorods at 300 degrees C for 3 h, respectively. The characterization of X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) indicate that the gamma-MnOOH and beta-MnO2 nanorods prepared are monoclinic and tetragonal single crystalline, respectively. Furthermore, the mechanism for the CTAB assisted hydrothermal synthesis of gamma-MnOOH nanorods has been preliminarily presented. (c) 2006 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:Layered δ-MnO2 (birnessites) are ubiquitous in nature and have also been reported to work as promising water oxidation catalysts or rechargeable alkali-ion battery cathodes when fabricated under appropriate conditions. Although tremendous effort has been spent on resolving the structure of natural/synthetic layered δ-MnO2 in the last few decades, no conclusive result has been reached. In this Article, we report an environmentally friendly route to synthesizing homogeneous Cu-rich layered δ-MnO2 nanoflowers in large scale. The local and average structure of synthetic Cu-rich layered δ-MnO2 has been successfully resolved from combined Mn/Cu K-edge extended X-ray fine structure spectroscopy and X-ray and neutron total scattering analysis. It is found that appreciable amounts (∼8%) of Mn vacancies are present in the MnO2 layer and Cu2+ occupies the interlayer sites above/below the vacant Mn sites. Effective hydrogen bonding among the interlayer water molecules and adjacent layer O ions has also been observed for the first time. These hydrogen bonds are found to play the key role in maintaining the intermediate and long-range stacking coherence of MnO2 layers. Quantitative analysis of the turbostratic stacking disorder in this compound was achieved using a supercell approach coupled with anisotropic particle-size-effect modeling. The present method is expected to be generally applicable to the structural study of other technologically important nanomaterials.
Rational Synthesis of Metal Nanotubes and Nanowires from Lamellar Structures

Abstract:A generic method has been developed for the synthesis of crystalline metal nanowires or nanotubes (such as bismuth nanotubes, tungsten nanowires) from lamellar structures. In a typical process, lamellar surfactant/inorganic composite precursors are first prepared by reacting cationic or anionic surfactants with inorganic species under appropriate conditions. After treating these precursors by hydrothermal pyrolysis, or other processes, crystalline metallic nanotubes or nanowires are obtained.

Abstract:Heterogeneous catalytic reactions involved in the vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) or solution-liquid-solid (SLS) growth of 1-D nanostructures have been intensively investigated in recent years. But how to control the homogeneous catalytic route and apply it to design new structures of materials has rarely been discussed. In this work, a homogeneous catalyst was successfully controlled via changing the catalyst feed way, and three novel alpha-MnO2 hierarchical structures, namely, urchin-like structures, sphere networks, and nanowire networks, were selectively synthesized at room temperature. beta-MnO2 nanorods were also prepared via this method at higher temperatures. The present work indicates that the homogeneous catalytic route not only can produce one certain structure of inorganic materials but also can be rationally controlled and therefore used to grow more new structures. On the other hand, this homogeneous catalytic method is a solution-based self-assembly route, providing a simple, mild, and template-free way to the fabrication of hierarchical structures.

Abstract:Manganese oxides are important materials in many applications. We describe, for the first time, the facile one-pot synthesis of highly crystallined lambda-MnO2 nanodisks assembled from nanoparticles through a novel wet chemical route. Morphology evolutions, magnetic properties, and phase transitions are also studied by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron rnicroscopy and thermal gravimetric analysis. A mechanism for the formation of the lambda-MnO2 nanodisks as well as their inner structure is proposed based on controlled experiments. The key to the successful preparation of this novel MnO2 nanostructure has been a synergic control of a surfactant, polyvinylpyrrolidone, and a solvent, dimethyl sulfoxide, capable of stabilizing the microreactors and promoting the assembly of manganese nanoparticles.

Abstract:Alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-MnO(2) single-crystal nanowires/nanorods with different aspect ratios have been successfully prepared by a common hydrothermal method based on the redox reactions of MnO(4)(-) and/or Mn(2+). The influences of oxidant, temperature, and inorganic cation (NH(4)(+) and K(+)) template concentrations on the morphology and crystallographic forms of the final products are discussed in this paper. It is interesting to find that all the MnO(2) one-dimensional nanostructures have a similar formation process: delta-MnO(2), which has a layer structure, serves as an important intermediate to other forms of MnO(2), and is believed to be responsible for the initial formation of MnO(2) one-dimensional nanostructures. A rolling mechanism has been proposed based on the results of the series of TEM images and XRD patterns of the intermediate.

Abstract:As a model system of 2-D oxide material, layered δ-MnO2 has important applications in Li ion battery systems. δ-MnO2 is also widely utilized as a precursor to synthesize other stable structure variants in the MnO2 family, such as α-, β-, R-, and γ-phases, which are 3-D interlinked structures with different tunnels. By utilizing the stochastic surface walking (SSW) pathway sampling method, we here for the first time resolve the atomistic mechanism and the kinetics of the layer-to-tunnel transition of MnO2, that is, from δ-MnO2 to the α-, β-, and R-phases. The SSW sampling determines the lowest-energy pathway from thousands of likely pathways that connects different phases. The reaction barriers of layer-to-tunnel phase transitions are found to be low, being 0.2-0.3 eV per formula unit, which suggests a complex competing reaction network toward different tunnel phases. All the transitions initiate via a common shearing and buckling movement of the MnO2 layer that leads to the breaking of the Mn-O framework and the formation of Mn(3+) at the transition state. Important hints are thus gleaned from these lowest-energy pathways: (i) the large pore size product is unfavorable for the entropic reason; (ii) cations are effective dopants to control the kinetics and selectivity in layer-to-tunnel transitions, which in general lowers the phase transition barrier and facilitates the creation of larger tunnel size; (iii) the phase transition not only changes the electronic structure but also induces the macroscopic morphology changes due to the interfacial strain.

Abstract:A series of MnO2 unique nanostructures were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method with microwave-assisted procedures. A novel nanostructure formation mechanism has been proposed, that MnO6 octahedral nuclei and molecular layers can be rearranged into different nanostructured morphologies by restacking and splitting, and then clasping, which is associated with tunnel structure phase transformation. Systematic macrostructure observations and magnetic property measurements have been conducted on these nanostructures, which demonstrate that engineering layered structures has the potential to create many unique nanostructures and unusual physicochemical behaviours.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:A lot of effort has been focused on the integration of nanorods/nanowire as building blocks into three-dimensional (3D) complex superstructures. But, the development of simple and effective methods for creating novel assemblies of self-supported patterns of hierarchical architectures to designed materials using a suitable chemical method is important to technology and remains an attractive, but elusive goal.RESULTS:The hierarchical structure of Mn3O4 with radiated spherulitic nanorods was prepared via a simple solution-based coordinated route in the presence of macrocycle polyamine, hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradeca-4,11-diene (CT) with the assistance of thiourea as an additive.CONCLUSION:This approach opens a new and facile route for the morphogenesis of Mn3O4 material and it might be extended as a novel synthetic method for the synthesis of other inorganic semiconducting nanomaterials such as metal chalcogenide semiconductors with novel morphology and complex form, since it has been shown that thiourea can be used as an effective additive and the number of such water-soluble macrocyclic polyamines also makes it possible to provide various kinds of ligands for different metals in homogeneous water system.

Abstract:Unit-cell-thin zeolitic nanosheets have emerged as fascinating materials for catalysis and separation. The controllability of nanosheet stacking is extremely challenging in the chemistry of two-dimensional zeolitic materials. To date, the organization of zeolitic nanosheets in hydrothermal synthesis has been limited by the lack of tunable control over the guest-host interactions between organic structure-directing agents (OSDAs) and zeolitic nanosheets. A direct synthetic methodology is reported that enables systematic manipulation of the aluminosilicate MWW-type nanosheet stacking. Variable control of guest-host interactions is rationally achieved by synergistically altering the charge density of OSDAs and synthetic silica-to-alumina composition. These finely controlled interactions allow successful preparation of a series of three-dimensional (3D) zeolites, with MWW-layer stacking in wide ranges from variably disorder to fully ordered, leading to tunable catalytic activity in the cracking reaction. These results highlight unprecedented opportunities to modulate zeolitic nanosheets arrangement in 3D zeolites whose structure can be tailored for catalysis and separation.

Abstract:New strategies for materials fabrication are of fundamental importance in the advancement of science and technology 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 . Organometallic 13 , 14 and other organic solution phase 15 , 16 , 17 synthetic routes have enabled the synthesis of functional inorganic quantum dots or nanocrystals. These nanomaterials form the building blocks for new bottom-up approaches to materials assembly for a range of uses; such materials also receive attention because of their intrinsic size-dependent properties and resulting applications 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 . Here we report a unified approach to the synthesis of a large variety of nanocrystals with different chemistries and properties and with low dispersity; these include noble metal, magnetic/dielectric, semiconducting, rare-earth fluorescent, biomedical, organic optoelectronic semiconducting and conducting polymer nanoparticles. This strategy is based on a general phase transfer and separation mechanism occurring at the interfaces of the liquid, solid and solution phases present during the synthesis. We believe our methodology provides a simple and convenient route to a variety of building blocks for assembling materials with novel structure and function in nanotechnology 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 .

Abstract:One-dimensional (1D) nanostructures have drawn continuous research attention because of their unique electrical, optical, and magnetic properties different from that of bulk and nanoparticles, as well as their potential applications in mesoscopic research and nanodevices. The main challenge in this area is how to precisely control the sizes, dimensionalities, compositions, and crystal structures in nanoscale, which may serve as a powerful tool for the tailoring of physical/chemical properties of materials in a controllable way. Here, we review the advances in the solution-based routes to prepare 1D nanostructures. Particularly, three systems of MnO2, rare-earth compounds, and silicates have been chosen to show the synthetic strategy under hydrothermal conditions. As the main theme, a rolling mechanism has been given special attention to present a relative general understanding of the growth of various transition-metal oxide (TMO) 1D nanostructures under solution conditions.

Abstract:Target synthesis of metal organic nanotubes (MONTs) through a classic "rolling-up" mechanism remains a big challenge for coordination chemists. In this work, we report three 2D lamellar compounds and one (4,0) zigzag MONT based on a common honeycomb coordination skeleton. Our synthetic strategy toward sheet/tube superstructure transformation is to asymmetrically modify the inter-layer interactions by gradually increasing the size of the amine templates. Eventually, to relieve the surface tension of individual layers and to enhance surface areas and optimize host guest interactions to accommodate bigger guests, spontaneous rolling up to form a tubular structure was achieved.

Abstract:Controlled synthesis of nanomaterials is one of the grand challenges facing materials scientists. In particular, how tunnel-based nanomaterials aggregate during synthesis while maintaining their well-aligned tunneled structure is not fully understood. Here, we describe the atomistic mechanism of oriented attachment (OA) during solution synthesis of tunneled alpha-MnO2 nanowires based on a combination of in situ liquid cell transmission electron microscopy (TEM), aberration-corrected scanning TEM with sub-angstrom spatial resolution and first principles calculations. It is found that primary tunnels (1×1 and 2×2) attach along their common {110} lateral surfaces to form interfaces corresponding to 2×3 tunnels that facilitate their short-range ordering. The OA growth of alpha-MnO2 nanowires is driven by the stability gained from elimination of {110} surfaces and saturation of Mn atoms at {110}-edges. During this process, extra [MnOx] radicals in solution link the two adjacent {110} surfaces and bond with the unsaturated Mn atoms from both surface edges to produce stable nanowire interfaces. Our results provide insights into the controlled synthesis and design of nanomaterials in which tunneled structures can be tailored for use in catalysis, ion exchange and energy storage applications.

Abstract:This article presents our recent work in the controlled synthesis of multiwalled (MWNT) and single-walled nanotubes (SWNT) with ordered architectures. The general synthesis approach involves chemical vapor deposition using rationally designed catalyst and substrates. The results include self-oriented MWNTs, individual SWNTs grown from controlled surface sites, and structures of suspended SWNTs along well-defined directions. The chemically derived nanotube architectures have opened up new possibilities in fundamental characterization and potential applications of nanotube materials. Systematic electron transport measurements are carried out to elucidate the electrical properties of various classes of SWNTs and to explore the physics in one-dimensional systems. High-performance electrical devices based on individual SWNTs are enabled by combining synthesis and microfabrication approaches.

Abstract:In organic synthesis, the composition and structure of products are predetermined by the reaction conditions; however, the synthesis of well-defined inorganic nanostructures often presents a significant challenge yielding nonstoichiometric or polymorphic products. In this study, confinement in the nanoscale cavities of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) provides a new approach for multistep inorganic synthesis where sequential chemical transformations take place within the same nanotube. In the first step, SWNTs donate electrons to reactant iodine molecules (I2), transforming them to iodide anions (I(-)). These then react with metal hexacarbonyls (M(CO)6, M = Mo or W) in the next step, yielding anionic nanoclusters [M6I14](2-), the size and composition of which are strictly dictated by the nanotube cavity, as demonstrated by aberration-corrected high resolution transmission electron microscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Atoms in the nanoclusters [M6I14](2-) are arranged in a perfect octahedral geometry and can engage in further chemical reactions within the nanotube, either reacting with each other leading to a new polymeric phase of molybdenum iodide [Mo6I12]n or with hydrogen sulfide gas giving rise to nanoribbons of molybdenum/tungsten disulfide [MS2]n in the third step of the synthesis. Electron microscopy measurements demonstrate that the products of the multistep inorganic transformations are precisely controlled by the SWNT nanoreactor with complementary Raman spectroscopy revealing the remarkable property of SWNTs to act as a reservoir of electrons during the chemical transformation. The electron transfer from the host nanotube to the reacting guest molecules is essential for stabilizing the anionic metal iodide nanoclusters and for their further transformation to metal disulfide nanoribbons synthesized in the nanotubes in high yield.

Abstract:Nanowires TiO2 were successfully synthesized from layered titanate Na2Ti3O7 particles by a simple soft chemical process. Compared with other synthetic routes where some templates or reactants were introduced into reaction system, only raw material and dilute HCl were used in this simple method. The diameters of nanowires are ca. 20–100 nm and the length up to several hundred micrometers. Formation of brookite TiO2 phase in the nanowires was confirmed by XRD and TEM measurement. Based on our experimental results, an exfoliating-splitting model was proposed for formation of nanowire structure.
