Abstract:Based on three-dimensional elastic theory, three components of displacement are expanded by orthotropic series. A second-order ordinary differential equation set is then obtained that can be solved by Frobenius Method. Considering the effect of the fluid, we can get the frequency equation of nonaxisymmetric free vibration of orthotropic fluid-filled cylindrical shell with arbitrary constant thickness. Some examples are illustrated to compare results with those based on shell theory.

Abstract:Non-dimensionalized equations and boundary conditions are presented for the torsion problem of an anisotropic body. The error of the fundamental solution cited in some boundary element books Is pointed out after an examination of the fundamental solution. Furthermore,a necessary and sufficient boundary integral equation is given for the problem and compared with the conventional boundary integral equation. Numerical results show that great errors of the boundary shear stresses obtained by the conventional boundary integral equation appear with a small error of torsion stiffness. Meanwhile,the necessary and sufficient;boundary integral equation always gives accurate results.

Abstract:With the assumption of radial vibration, there exists only a trivial solution for a general orthotropic hollow sphere and the nonzero solution can be obtained only for a spherically isotropic hollow sphere (a special case of the orthotropic hollow sphere) and the corresponding proofs are presented. So, the numerical results given by Stavsky and Greenberg [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 113, 847–851 (2003)] for a general orthotropic hollow sphere are unreasonable.

Abstract:In this paper, the general nonaxisymmetric free vibration of a spherically isotropic elastic spherical shell filled with a compressible fluid medium is investigated. To this end, the three-dimensional elasticity solution method recently developed by the authors [H. J. Ding and W. Q. Chen, Int. J. Solids Struct. 33, 2575–2590 (1996)] is employed. The effect of fluid is considered by introducing a relation between the normal displacement and the normal stress of the shell at the inner spherical surface. It is shown that the coupled vibration can be divided into two independent classes as in the case of empty spherical shell. The exact three-dimensional frequency equations are then derived. As the exact elasticity solution can serve as a benchmark to check various approximate theories, frequency equations of three typical shell theories are also presented. Numerical examples are given and comparisons between four theories are made.
Fundamental Solutions for Transversely Isotropic Magneto-Electro-elastic Media and Boundary Integral Formulation

Abstract:To obtain the fundamental solutions for computation of magneto-electro-elastic media by the boundary element method, the general solutions in the case of distinct eigenvalues are derived and expressed in five harmonic functions from the governing equations and the strict differential operator theorem. On the basis of these general solutions, the fundamental solution of infinite magneto-electro-elastic solid are obtained with the method of trial-and-error. Finally, the boundary integral formulation is derived and the corresponding boundary element method program is implemented to perform two numerical calculations (a column under uni-axial tension, uniform electric displacement or uniform magnetic induction, an annular plate simply-supported on outer and inner surfaces under axial loads). The numerical results agree well with the analytical ones.

Abstract:In this paper, free vibrations of a spherically isotropic spherical shell embedded in an elastic medium of Pasternak type are studied by using a six-mode shell theory that includes effects of shear deformation, rotary inertia, and transverse normal strain. The separable homogeneous solution for displacements and stresses in a deep spherical shell is derived and two classes of vibrations are obtained by the introduction of five auxiliary variables. Numerical results are compared with those predicted by two Simpler shell theories mentioned in the paper and those by three-dimensional elastic theory.

Abstract:The general solution for the plane problem of magneto-electro-elastic media is derived in terms of four harmonic functions using strict differential operator theory for the case of distinct material eigenvalues. The two-dimensional fundamental solution for an infinite magneto-electro-elastic plane is further obtained by virtue of the trial-and-error method on the basis of the general solution. A boundary element method program is finally implemented to perform the numerical calculations. It is found that the BEM results agree well with those of the two exact solutions, which are also derived in this paper.

Abstract:The radial vibration of a multilayered piezoelectric/magnetostrictive composite hollow sphere is investigated. In terms of the Gaussian equations, two unknown time functions are first introduced to complete the solution of electric displacement and magnetic induction. The solution for mechanical field involving two unknown time functions is obtained by means of the superposition method, the state space method as well as the separation of variables method. By means of the electric and magnetic boundary conditions and continuity conditions, two Volterra integral equations of the second kind with respect to two time functions are derived. The interpolation method is employed to solve the Volterra integral equations. The present solution is suitable for analyzing the transient responses of composite hollow sphere composed of piezoelectric and magnetostrictive layers with arbitrary composite sequence. Numerical results are presented and discussed.

Abstract:The dynamic solution of a multilayered spherically isotropic piezoelectric hollow sphere subjected to radial dynamic loads is obtained. By the method of superposition, the solution is divided into two parts: one is quasi-static and the other is dynamic. The quasi-static part is derived by the state-space method, and the dynamic part is obtained by the method of separation of variables coupled with the initial parameter method as well as the orthogonal expansion technique. By using the quasi-static and dynamic parts, the electric boundary conditions as well as the electric continuity conditions, a Volterra integral equation of the second kind with respect to a function of time is derived, which can be solved successfully by means of the interpolation method. The displacements, stresses and electric potentials are finally obtained. The present method is suitable for a multilayered spherically isotropic piezoelectric hollow sphere consisting of arbitrary layers and subjected to arbitrary spherically symmetric dynamic loads. Finally, numerical results are presented and discussed.

Abstract:The non-axisymmetric free vibrations of a spherically isotropic spherical shell, which is submerged in a compressible fluid medium, are analyzed. A method based on three-dimensional elastic theory is developed. Two classes of frequency equations, which correspond to two classes of vibrations, respectively, are then obtained. It can be shown that for the first class of vibration there is no effect of the frequencies whether fluid exists outside or not. As numerical results show, the compressibility of the fluid has little effect on the real parts of the vibrational frequencies of the second class when compared with the incompressible case except for the breathing mode,n= 0. Various kinds of shell theory are also presented. It is found that the transverse normal strain has a great effect on the natural frequencies of a submerged spherical shell.

Abstract:A three-dimensional analysis is carried out for the free vibrations of a multi-layered spherically isotropic hollow sphere using a state-space method. By the introduction of three displacement functions and two stress functions, two independent state equations with varying coefficients are derived. Taylor's expansion theorem is then employed to obtain solutions to the two state equations and relationships between the state variables at the upper and lower surfaces of each lamina are established. A variable substitution technique is particularly used to make the derivation more natural and simpler. By virtue of the continuity conditions between two adjacent layers, two sets of linear algebraic equations about the boundary variables at the inner and outer surfaces of a multi-layered hollow sphere are obtained. Frequency equations for the free vibrations are then presented.

Abstract:Based on three-dimensional elastic theory, the nonaxisymmetric free vibrations of a spherically isotropic spherical shell embedded in an elastic medium are studied in the paper. Three displacement functions are introduced to simplify the governing equations of a spherically isotropic medium for free vibrational problem. The Pasternak's assumption is adopted for the elastic medium, for which the P-ζ relation in the spherical coordinates is derived by the principle of minimum potential energy. It is found that the vibration of an embedded spherical shell can be divided into two classes, as the case in vacuum. The first class is identical to the corresponding one in vacuum, and the second has changed due to the effect of the surrounding medium. Numerical results are carried out to clarify the effect of relative parameters.

Abstract:An exact, three-dimensional method is developed in the paper to analyze the free vibration of a spherically isotropic hollow sphere made of a functionally graded material and filled with a compressible fluid medium. The material is assumed to be inhomogeneous along the radial direction. By introducing three displacement functions and employing the function expansion method, the governing equations are simplified to an uncoupled second-order ordinary differential equation, and a coupled system of two such equations. Solutions to these equations are given when the elastic constants and the mass density are power functions of the radial direction. To investigate the effect of material gradient on the natural frequencies, numerical calculations are finally performed.

Abstract:Acoustic vibrations of nanoparticles made of materials with anisotropic elasticity and nanoparticles with non-spherical shapes are theoretically investigated using a homogeneous continuum model. Cubic, hexagonal and tetragonal symmetries of the elasticity are discussed, as are spheroidal, cuboctahedral and truncated cuboctahedral shapes. Tools are described to classify the different vibrations and for example help identify the modes having a significant low-frequency Raman scattering cross-section. Continuous evolutions of the modes starting from those of an isotropic sphere coupled with the determination of the irreducible representation of the branches permit some qualitative statements to be made about the nature of various modes. For spherical nanoparticles, a more accurate picture is obtained through projections onto the vibrations of an isotropic sphere.

Abstract:In this paper, three displacement functions are introduced to simplify the basic equations of a radially polarized, spherically isotropic, piezoelectric medium with radial inhomogeneity. For the general non-axisymmetric free vibration problem, it is shown that the controlling equations are finally reduced to an uncoupled second order ordinary differential equation and a coupled system of three second order ordinary differential equations. Solutions to these differential equations are given for the case that material constants are of power functions of the radial co-ordinate. For free vibrations of multilayered piezoelastic spherical shells, it is shown that there are two separated classes of vibrations. The first class is independent of the electric effect and is identically the same as that for pure elasticity, while the second is affected by the electric field. Numerical results are given for the non-axisymmetric free vibration of a single-layered, inhomogeneous piezoelastic spherical shell and effects of some involved parameters are discussed.

Abstract:The free vibration of a functionally graded material hollow sphere submerged in a compressible fluid medium is exactly analyzed. The sphere is assumed to be spherically isotropic with material constants being inhomogeneous along the radial direction. By employing a separation technique as well as the spherical harmonics expansion method, the governing equations are simplified to an uncoupled second-order ordinary differential equation, and a coupled system of two such equations. Solutions to these equations are given when the elastic constants and the mass density are power functions of the radial coordinate. Numerical examples are finally given to show the effect of the material gradient on the natural frequencies.
Vibrations and damping of the eigenmodes of viscoelastic nanospheres with thermal conductivity

Abstract:In this paper, we derive a series of exact analytical closed expressions to calculate the complex eigenfrequencies and the displacement for the corresponding eigenmodes of a viscoelastic (nano-)sphere in the presence of linear damping. Where possible, we provide closed expressions for damping rates, including the contributions from viscosity, as well as thermal conductivity and solutions of the heat equation. We assume an isolated system, such that no energy/heat transfer to the environment is allowed. We find monotonic behavior of the damping as a function of frequency for breathing and torsional modes, however, for spheroidal modes we find non-monotonicity. Furthermore, we analytically analyze the thermodynamic limit for all mode types. We also investigate the frequency shift and find expected behavior, i.e. a reduced eigenfrequency with damping than without damping for breathing and torsional modes. For spheroidal modes, however, we find non-monotonic shifts, corresponding to the damping. For some eigenfrequencies we find anomalous frequency shifts.

Abstract:The free vibration of a simply supported, transversely isotropic cylindrical shell filled with compressible fluid is exactly analyzed based on three-dimensional elasticity. The displacement separation technique as well as the orthogonal series expansion method are employed. Bessel functions with complex arguments are directly used in the solution for the case of complex eigenvalues. Frequency equation of the coupled vibration problem is obtained by taking account of the effect of the inner fluid. Numerical results are finally presented and compared with those based on three typical shell theories.

Abstract:An exact 3D analysis of free vibration of a piezoceramic hollow sphere submerged in a compressible fluid is presented in this paper. A separation method is adopted to simplify the basic equations for spherically isotropic piezoelasticity. It is shown that there are two independent classes of vibration. The first one is independent of the fluid medium as well as the electric field, while the second is associated with both the fluid parameter and the piezoelectric effect. Exact frequency equations are derived and numerical results are obtained.
