Abstract:Two doubly charged polyoxoanions, Mo6O192- and W6O192-, were observed in the gas phase using electrospray ionization. Their electronic structures were investigated using photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional calculations with relativistic effective core potentials. Each dianion was found to be highly stable despite the presence of strong intramolecular Coulomb repulsion, estimated to be about 2 eV for each system. The valence detachment features were all shown to originate from electronic excitations involving oxygen lone-pair type orbitals. Their observed energies were in excellent agreement with the theoretical vertical detachment energies calculated using time-dependent density functional theory. Despite being multiply charged, polyoxometalate oxide clusters can be studied in the gas phase, providing the opportunity for detailed benchmark theoretical studies on the electronic structures of these important transition-metal oxide systems.

Abstract:Using photodetachment photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) in the gas phase, we investigated the electronic structure and chemical bonding of six anionic [(MoO)-O-V](3+) complexes, [MoOX4](-) (where X = Cl (1), SPh (2), and SPh-p-Cl (3)), [MoO(edt)(2)](-) (4), [MoO(bdt)(2)](-) (5), and [MOO(bdtCl(2))(2)](-) (6) (where edt = ethane- 1,2-dithiolate, bdt = benzene-1,2-dithiolate, and bdtCl(2) = 3,6-dichlorobenzene-1,2-dithiolate). The gas-phase PES data revealed a wealth of new electronic structure information about the [(MoO)-O-V](3+) complexes. The energy separations between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and HOMO-1 were observed to be dependent on the O-Mo-S-C(alpha) dihedral angles and ligand types, being relatively large for the monodentate ligands, 1.32 eV for Cl and 0.78 eV for SPh and SPhCl, compared to those of the bidentate dithiolate complexes, 0.47 eV for edt and 0.44 eV for bdt and bdtCl(2). The threshold PES feature in all six species is shown to have the same origin and is due to detaching the single unpaired electron in the HOMO, mainly of Mo 4d character. This result is consistent with previous theoretical calculations and is verified by comparison with the PES spectra of two d(0) complexes, [VO(bdt)(2)](-) and [VO(bdtCl(2))(2)](-). The observed PES features are interpreted on the basis of theoretical calculations and previous spectroscopic studies in the condensed phase.

Abstract:The electronic structures, IR frequencies, HOMO-LUMO population of four hexaoxoanions (M6O19 n-, M = Mo and W, n = 2; M = Nb and Ta, n = 8) were studied by density functional theory method, B3LYP, at LanL2DZ level. According to the analysis of frontier orbitals and molecule electrostatic potential, these four anions can be classified into two types: Mo6O19 2- and W6O19 2- which are electron acceptors, and Nb6O 19 8- and Ta6O19 8- which are electron donors. LUMO orbitals of Mo6O19 2- and W6O19 2- consist of p orbitals of bridge oxygen atom and inner d orbitals of metal atom, whereas Nb6O 19 8- and Ta6O19 8- mainly consist of outer s and p orbitals of metal atom. Molecular electrostatic potential further exhibits the existing of electrophilic and nucleophilic sites in these anions. These results account for their different chemical properties such as the coordination ability and stability in aqueous solution.

Abstract:The electronic structures and bonding of isopoly oxometalates M 6 O 19 2− (M=Cr, Mo, W) have been investigated by using ab initio and relativistic density functional methods. We have discussed the role of the central oxygen atom and the (d-p) π conjugation interactions between the metal and bridging oxygen atoms. It is found that there exist 12 three-centered two-electron (d-p-d) π bonds for the three M 4 ( μ -O) 4 planar rings in M 6 O 19 2− ions and these hexametalates are considered to have quasi-aromaticity. The (d-p) π conjugation effects play essential role in stabilizing these cluster compounds, and the reduced (d-p) π conjugation effects account for the instability of the isopoly oxochromate ion, Cr 6 O 19 2− . The vibrational spectra and electronic spectra of M 6 O 19 2− ions are evaluated and assigned theoretically and the calculated spectra are in fairly good agreement with the measured experimental results.

Abstract:The absolute photoabsorption cross sections σa and photoionization quantum yields η of Cr(CO)6, Mo(CO)6, and W(CO)6 are measured in the wavelength range of ∼300–1600 Å. We have also estimated the photoionization cross sections σi and the neutral photodissociation cross sections σd from σa and η. Main absorption features are tentatively assigned with the help of the MO diagram and the photoelectron spectroscopic data of M(CO)6(M=Cr,Mo,W). Large optical oscillator strength distributions and neutral photodissociation cross sections are obtained at the photon energies far beyond the first ionization potential. Our studies revealed the valence excitation nature of the superexcited states in the extreme ultraviolet region. It is suggested that the neutral photodissociation in this region shares a similarity with that in the UV region below the first ionization potential because they both involve a repulsive ejection of the first CO ligand.

Abstract:Twelve ions have been observed in the dissociative photoionization studies of Mo(CO)(6) using a synchrotron radiation source in the photon energy range of 8-40 eV. The photoionization efficiency (PIE) curves of these ions from the dissociative ionization of Mo(CO)(6) have been measured for the first time. Appearance potentials (AP) of all the ions have been determined from their PIE curves and these AP values, in turn, bring about a series of bond dissociation energy (BDE) data for the intermediate ions produced by photoionization/fragmentation.

Adiabatic and vertical electron binding energies for both species were measured, providing detailed information about molecular orbital energy levels of the parent dianions as well as the ground and excited states of the product anions [(MO)-O-V(mnt)(2)](-). Density functional theory calculations were used to assist assignment of the detachment features. Differences in energy between these features provided the energies of ligand-to-metal charge-transfer transitions from S(pi) and S(sigma) molecular orbitals to the singly occupied metal-based orbital of the products [(MO)-O-V(mnt)(2)](-). These unique data for the M-V species were obtained at the C-2v geometry of the parent M-IV dianions. However, theoretical calculations and available condensed phase data suggested that a geometry featuring differentially folded dithiolene ligands (C-s point symmetry) was slightly lower in energy. The driving force for ligand folding is a favorable covalent interaction between the singly occupied metal-based molecular orbital (a(1) in C-2v point symmetry; highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)) and the least stable of the occupied sulfur-based molecular orbitals (b(1) in C-2v point symmetry, HOMO-1) that is only possible upon reduction to the lower symmetry. This ligand folding induces a large increase in the intensity predicted for the a' S(pi) --> a' d(x2-y2) charge-transfer transition originating from the HOMO-2 of [(MO)-O-V(mnt)(2)](-) under C-s point symmetry. Photodetachment of hydrated oxalate dianions in the gas phase , C 2 O 4 2 À „ H 2 O ... n „ n Ä 3 – 40 ... : From solvated clusters to nanodroplet

Abstract:Oxalate (C2O4 ) is a common dianion, but it is not electronically stable as an isolated species due to the strong intramolecular Coulomb repulsion and can only exist as solvated species. We observed hydrated oxalate clusters, C 2O4 (H2O)n for n53 – 40, using electrospray ionization of an oxalate salt solution and studied their energetics and stabilities using photodetachment photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. We found that the smallest observable solvated cluster, C2O4 (H2O)3 , has an adiabatic electron binding energy of ;0.0 eV, i.e., a minimum of three H 2O is required to stabilize C 2O4 22 in the gas phase. Theoretical calculations show that the first four waters bind tightly to C2O4 22 , each forming two H-bonds with C 2O4 22 peripherally without interwater H-bonding. The charges of the dianion were stabilized sufficiently that additional waters beyond n54 form only single H-bonds with C 2O4 22 and interwater H-bonding was observed starting atn55. The repulsive Coulomb barrier, characteristic of multiply-charged anions, was estimated from photon energy-dependent spectra for the smaller clusters and was found to decrease with increasingn. We observed that photoelectron intensities for features of the solute decreased as n increased, whereas detachment signals from the solvent became dominant for the large solvated clusters. This observation suggested that C 2O4 22 is situated in the center of the solvated clusters so that electrons detached from the solute were suppressed by the surrounding solvent layer. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1590641 #

Abstract:The natural bond orbitals and McWeeny bond orders for polyoxoanians (M6O19)(Z-) (M = Mo, W, Z = 2; M = V, Nb, Z = 8) have been calculated in terms of Weinhold's natural bond orbital theory using DV-SCC-X alpha method. it is shown that all polyoxoanions possess quasi-aromaticity. They are compared with other aromatic systems.

Abstract:The photoelectron images of Ag-(H2O)(x) (x = 1,2) and AgOH-(H2O)(y) (y = 0-4) are reported. The Ag-(H2O)(1,2) anionic complexes have similar characteristics to the other two coinage metal-water complexes that can be characterized as metal atomic anion solvated by water molecules with the electron mainly localized on the metal. The vibrationally well-resolved photoelectron spectrum allows the adiabatic detachment energy (ADE) and vertical detachment energy (VDE) of AgOH- to be determined as 1.18(2) and 1.24(2) eV, respectively. The AgOH- anion interacts more strongly with water molecules than the Ag- anion. The photoelectron spectra of Ag-(H2O)(x) and AgOH-(H2O)(y) show a gradual increase in ADE and VDE with increasing x and y due to the solvent stabilization.

Electron Affinities And Electronic Structures Of O-, M-, And P-Hydroxyphenoxyl Radicals: A Combined Low-Temperature Photoelectron Spectroscopic And Ab Initio Calculation Study

Abstract:Hydroxyl substituted phenoxides, o-, m-, p-HO(C6H4)O-, and the corresponding neutral radicals are important species; in particular, the p-isomer pair, i.e., p-HO(C6H4)O- and p-HO(C6H4)O center dot, is directly involved in the proton-coupled electron transfer in biological photosynthetic centers. Here we report the first spectroscopic study of these species in the gas phase by means of low-temperature photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) and ab initio calculations. Vibrationally resolved PES spectra were obtained at 70 K and at several photon energies for each anion, directly yielding electron affinity (EA) and electronic structure information for the corresponding hydroxyphenoxyl radical. The EAs are found to vary with OH positions, from 1.990 +/- 0.010 (p) to 2.315 +/- 0.010 (o) and 2.330 +/- 0.010 (m) eV. Theoretical calculations were carried out to identify the optimized molecular structures for both anions and neutral radicals. The electron binding energies and excited state energies were also calculated to compare with experimental data. Excellent agreement is found between calculations and experiments. Molecular orbital analyses indicate a strong OH antibonding interaction with the phenoxide moiety for the o- as well as the p-isomer, whereas such an interaction is largely missing for the m-anion. The variance of EAs among three isomers is interpreted primarily due to the interplay between two competing factors: the OH antibonding interaction and the H-bonding stabilization (existed only in the o-anion).

Differences in energy between these features provided the energies of ligand-to-metal charge-transfer transitions from S(π) and S(σ) molecular orbitals to the singly occupied metal-based orbital of the products [MVO(mnt)2]-. These unique data for the MV species were obtained at the C2v geometry of the parent MIV dianions. However, theoretical calculations and available condensed phase data suggested that a geometry featuring differentially folded dithiolene ligands (Cs point symmetry) was slightly lower in energy. The driving force for ligand folding is a favorable covalent interaction between the singly occupied metal-based molecular orbital (a1 in C2v point symmetry; highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)) and the least stable of the occupied sulfur-based molecular orbitals (b1 in C2v point symmetry, HOMO−1) that is only possible upon reduction to the lower symmetry. This ligand folding induces a large increase in the intensity predicted for the a‘ S(π) → a‘ dx2-y2 charge-transfer transition originating from the HOMO−2 of [MVO(mnt)2]- under Cs point symmetry. Electronic absorption spectra are available for the related species [MoVO(bdt)2]- (bdt = 1,2-benzenedithiolato) and for the oxidized form of dimethyl sulfoxide reductase. The intense absorptions at ∼1.7 eV have been assigned previously to S(σ) → Mo transitions, assuming C2v geometry. The present work indicates that the alternative a‘ S(π) → a‘ dx2-y2 of Cs geometry must be considered. Overall, this study confirms that the electronic structure of the M-dithiolene units are exquisitely sensitive to dithiolene ligand folding, reinforcing the proposal that these units are tunable conduits for electron transfer in enzyme systems.

Abstract:Photoionization of W(CO)6 in the photon energy range of 8–40 eV produced a variety of intermediate ions of the form (WCm(CO)n)x+. Photoionization efficiency (PIE) curves of these ions have been measured for the first time by using a time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOFMS) with vaccum ultraviolet (VUV) photons from a synchrotron radiation source. Appearance potentials (AP) of all the observed ions have been determined from their PIE curves. Based on these AP values, we obtained a series of bond dissociation energy (BDE) data for the intermediate ions produced by the dissociative photoionization.

Abstract:We have revisited the gas-phase photoelectron spectra of quadruple-bonded Mo and W paddlewheel complexes with modern DFT methods, obtaining valuable calibration of four well-known exchange-correlation functionals, namely BP86, OLYP, B3LYP*, and B3LYP. All four functionals were found to perform comparably, with discrepancies between theory and experiment ranging from < 0.1 to ~0.5 eV, with the lowest errors observed for the classic pure functional BP86. More encouragingly, all four functionals reproduce differences in IPs between analogous Mo and W complexes, as well as large, experimentally observed ligand field effects on the IPs, with near-quantitative accuracy. The calculations help us interpret a number of differences between analogous Mo and W complexes through the lens of relativistic effects. Thus, relativity results in not only significantly lower IPs for the W complexes, but also smaller HOMO-LUMO gaps and different triplet states, relative to their Mo counterparts.

Abstract:The possibility to perform low-pressure gas-phase photoemission experiments has allowed the exploration at molecular scale of the complex correlation between electronic and structural properties of the matter. A significant advantage in the removal of the interference of the surrounding at low-pressure is also the easier correlation of the experimental results with theoretical ab-initio simulations. In the context of core ionization, the development of accurate methods for calculating inner-shell binding energies (BEs) offers a dual benefit. Firstly, it aids significantly in interpreting experimental data, helping to assign the contributions of all non-equivalent atoms, even in unresolved features arising from a molecular structure. Secondly, it allows for the anticipation of experimental results by accurately predicting spectral lines. In this context, we have developed and extensively tested a computational protocol based on plane-wave/pseudopotential density functional theory (PW-DFT) to predict XPS BEs in molecules and molecular aggregates. This protocol is based on a ∆SCF approach and has been tested comparing the present theoretical results with experimental XPS spectra collected from several molecular systems in gas phase, ranging from benzene derivates to biomolecules. Our calculations have been performed using semilocal and global/range-separated hybrid density functionals, containing increasing fractions of Hartree-Fock exact exchange (EXX). Specifically, PBE, B3LYP(20 % EXX), HSE(range separated with 25 % EXX at short range ) and BH&HLYP (50 % EXX) have been used for the assessment of the computational protocol. EOM-CCSD has been employed as reference method for comparison. Our PW-DFT approach demonstrated to be generally accurate and robust even using semilocal DFT, and also suitable for application to very large molecular systems and to organic thin films deposited on inorganic surfaces.
